All six of Krytenia's space shutles had been primed for weeks for this. Each carried a quintet of geostationary satellites - the Co-ordinated Orbital Positioning System, or COPS for short. Over the next two weeks, these would be placed in position above the region, providing accurate positioning information to all who wished to use it.
"T-minus seventy seconds. Switching to Español for final countdown."
The countdown continued in the nation's unofficial second language. The final seconds ticked away.
"Diez...Nueve...Ocho...Siete...Seis...Cinco...Cuatro...Ignition...Dos...Uno...We have lift off!"
At precicely the same point, the Santa Maria, the Golden Hind, the Trinidad, the Sao Gabriel, the Endeavour, and the newest craft, the
Helios, took off from their respective launchpads. The logistical nightmare had been pulled off; the KCEA had pulled of a six-craft simultaneous launch.
Mission Commander Bob Costa picked up the phone.
"This is Gold Commander. The blindfold is being removed." |
