Ever since the proud nation of Dartace had fallen soon after the arrival of the Free Republic in AO, Lamoni had been keeping an eye on the former nation, even to the point of sending military scouts in to prevent illegal migration into Lamoni itself.
The latest batch of military scout teams were tasked with taking a look at the main cities of the former nation. It turned out that most of the buildings had either collapsed, or become unliveable through disuse. The people on what had once been proud streets had now reverted back to 'primitive lifestyles.' Conditions had gotten so bad that even all of the military bases had been looted, with all the weapons therein either missing or useless.
The scout teams were themselves were armed with Vektor CR-21 assault rifles, the latest attempt by the Free Republic's military to standardize their assault rifle inventory.
The senior field commander of the scout teams was a Captain Kurt Van Daagen. He called over to his communications private, and told him to open a direct radio line to HQ.
"Whale six to Whale HQ; conditions in former Dartace are worse than ever. These poor souls would probably benefit from having us take over. Over."
A sigh was the first thing to come over the radio. "We know, Whale six" came the voice from Whale HQ (Gen. Peter Rice); "however, the politicians have yet to give us the go ahead. Anything else to report, over."
The Lamonian military had had a plan for expanding the Free Republic into Dartace since a few months after Dartace fell, but for some reason or other, the politicians had never signed off on it; even with the increasing number of criminals using former Dartace as a hideout. What the military didn't know was that the order to expand into Dartace was coming in from President Stone himself; who had issued it during a drunken spell at an SDL meeting.
"Whale six, it appears that Operation Enfold is a go. Return to base... repeat, return to base."
"Whale Six is returning to base, Whale HQ."
Back in Lamoni, military police units were gearing up to walk into Dartace behind a vast campaign designed to win the hearts and minds of any Dartacians that may have chosen to stay in their crippled homeland. This campaign included leaflet airdrops, shortwave and FM radio messages... even TV spots. No one knew how many Dartacians would get the message, but it was hoped that opposition would be light if it happened at all. Such was the mindset of the first MP units as they entered Dartace. |

The Lamonian MP units had been in Dartace for one hour before they found the first smuggler's hideout. A small gunbattle ensued, but the MP's had the superior firepower. The firefight was quickly ended, and the hideout was searched. Inside, they found many guns, much ammunition, and Abbatorian frog extract for smoking. The fact that there were no live frogs in the compound, nor any 'fresh' extract, suggested that the 'batch' had been here for a while. |
