Congress Recalls SDL Alliance Decision

HALOSEN, Myrtannia - Only weeks after the signing of the treaty of the Strategic Defense League by President Holton, the Myrtannian Congress has recalled the decision. This seems to have sparked from the growing shifts in alliances in Atlantian Oceania. Reports of several nations joining or switching to the SDL have been flowing in from all over the region.

"The original decision to ally with the SDL was made in the interest of preserving Myrtannia's national security from foreign threats. However, we now fear the massive swing in power may provoke unwanted tensions in the region," congressman Ernie Standiford (F - Damascos) stated at a press conference.

Under Myrtannian law, the executive branch has the ability to make foreign policy decisions, such as alliances, initially. At any time, the congress may recall such a decision for an official vote of either the congress itself or as a national referrendum. In the later case, an election date would be set, and the people themselves would vote on the issue.

Despite tensions already running high due to observed nuclear testing in Atheistic Right, the Myrtannian Congress seems to be taking a step back from the President's official decision on the SDL issue. When it was announced, it was recieved with a mix of welcome and jeering amongst the Myrtannian people. Polls show that Myrtannians were then split 50-50 on the issue. The presence of Starblaydi naval forces approaching the area have made the issue even more pertinent than usual.

"We refuse to be carried into participation into a conflict that is not ours in any way by the SDL," announced congresswoman Alita Norment (W-Blackheart), "If ever there were a large war, the people and the Worker's Party would vehemently refuse to be forced into any kind of compliance with the conflict. We must maintain complete independence from such foreign pressure."

Even members of the President's own National party are having second thoughts on the issue.

"Right now, we need to forget alliances and focus on the issue of disarming Atheistic Right. That means cooperation between the Lamoni-led SDL and the Starblaydi-led SAAS," explained congresswoman Vashti Loree (N - Bunkal), "Then we need to take a step back and discuss in the open whether the SDL is really the best way to go for Myrtannia."

A vote may be forced as early as next week.

A message was sent to the Mrytannian ambassador...

QUOTE

We are sorry to see the Mrytannian people and the Mrytannian government question there participation in the SDL. The Bazalonian government believes that any matter that is of truely regional importance, such as the situation involving Atheistic Right should be handled by AORDO. As such Bazalonia will have no issue with sending it's miilitary troops against Atheistic Right even though Starblaydia, the chief nation in the SAAS will be leading the charge.

On the note about SDL, if we feel that a proposal that is put before the SDL is nothing but Warmongering or shameless power-gaming then we will have no hesitation to let the  SDL know and to threaten to leave the SDL over it and if it happens then we will immeadiately announce our resignation for the SDL.

Whatever happens whether you remain inside the SDL or leave we believe that strong relations between our nations can not only be maintained but enhanced.

Thank you

Yours Sincerly, Richard Menszae
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade

To: President Holton, Myrtannian Congress; Myrtannia
From: President Stone; Lamoni

As one of the so called 'big three' nations that started the SDL, we are doubly saddened to see that the Myrtannian Congress is questioning it's signing of the SDL charter.

Despite the propaganda that casts us as warmongering, expansion happy crazed maniacs, the SDL is the democratic force that holds the SAAS in check in Atlantian Oceania.  As previously noted, a nation that has signed the SDL charter does not have to send military forces into a conflict if they do not wish to do so.  Supplying medical or financial aid would fit the bill as well.  President Holton was told this when he signed the SDL charter, and it remains true today.  Even the so called third alliance does not offer it's members such consideration.  This is not 'foreign pressure,' it is common sense.

As for the Atheistic Right nuclear crisis, the Free Republic would like to join Myrtannia in any defensive military moves that it might wish to make in this matter.  All Atlantian Oceania nations should band together to stop the threat of another Latao.  The Great Lion must stop his nuclear ambitions, or they will be stopped for him.

OOC: Exactly right -- I have three or four similar grievances against Lamoni in this one RP alone (the Winds of Change one) for ICly claiming to know stuff he shouldn't.

"An overly-powerful SDL is a bad thing for the region of Atlantian Oceania" said Starblaydi foreign minister Lord Isaac Chisoko recently. I've never been one to accuse him of stating the obvious but, please, this is the plainest thing he's said all year.

The so-called Defense [sic] League are, quite blatantly, nothing of the sort. Witness their attempt to produce a airborne trooper equipment that Starblaydia have had for years. A military historian I'm not, but who ever heard of deploying Paratroopers from the air to defend a part of your territory?

Myrtannia's President Holton seems to be the first national leader to recognise this fact too. One of the chief aims, though you wouldn't hear it confirmed from the SDL, of the Lavingrad Pact is to 'unceasingly seek an organistation of collective security in Atlantian Oceania'. Nothing of the pitiful sort of "Members are not allowed to attack another member unless they are doing so in self-defense" that a certain other organistation pathetically states as its highest aim.

A gargantuan SDL should not be tolerated, not by the neutral states, not by AORDO, not by the rumoured 'Third Alliance' and certainly not by the Strategic Alliance.

Congress Compromises; Public Support of Holton Down

HALOSEN, Myrtannia - After weeks of debate, the National Congress make a compromise decision on Monday afternoon to settle the situation with the Strategic Defense League alliance decision. Heavy criticism of the unannounced intentions of joining the pact brought debate about by political opponents of President Holton's National party. Leading the charge were both the Federal and Worker's parties, but the National party line held.

The debate took place largely behind locked doors, but it was announced at 5:30 pm Myrtannian time that a compromising bill had been passed. In the new agreement, the Congress first ammended the constitution to remove treaty-making powers from the executive branch. The National Congress will now vote on any such decisions.

In return for support for the ammendment, the National party were able to push through approval for the SDL alliance by five votes. For now, Halosen is linked militarily with Kafra. However, polls show that public support for the President and his party are down to their lowest point ever - hovering around 49% now. This bodes ill for the man who was elected with a 72% majority, and who will be facing re-election sooner rather than later.
