President Bren Passes Away

Presidential Manor, Kafra - 15h24

The coughing could be heard from down the hall, followed a wheezing sound. Doctor Mohammed Gharizi sat on the chair, motionless, eyes swelling with tears. He had tried to get as far away from the room as he could, but he could not escape. Every 10 seconds, it seemed, came the reminder of what he was helpless to stop.

He kept trying to remind himself of his faith, that it was his time. He had done enough for Nedalia, or indeed, the region as a whole, and it was his time to finally rest in peace. He wasn't successful, however. He found himself questioning why such a great man, perhaps never more needed in all his years as leader of Nedalia, was taken at such a turbulent time. Almost the entire country had its trust in the man; surrounding him was an undeniable aura.

He made away of making his people feel like everything was OK, made them feel a comfort inside. Nedalia had advanced so much in the past 10 years due to the man that was seeing the end of his life, and the best doctor in Nedalia, by reputation, was helpless to stop it.

He got up off the chair and walked slowly down the hall towards the room of the dying man. Every step he took seemed followed by a screeching cough; every step he took dropped a new tear from his eyes. He stood infront of the door, motionless, attempting to find the courage to spend the last of his leader's dying minutes by his bedside.

Calmly, with his hands shaking, he push the handle downwards, and walked in slowly. The man on the bed, in between all his coughs and aches of pain, looked up and smiled at the doctor, who was now crying to his full extent. The man reached out his hand, and it was immediately taken by both of the doctor's hands.

He shut his eyes, and slowly, his hand began to loosen its grip...

Nedalia Government Building I, Kafra - 19h33

This was, by far, the toughest assignment Government Spokesperson Henry Bouten would have in his entire life. He was about to obliterate the morale of an entire country in 2 minutes of talking, devastate the hopes of billions who adored the man. He had to announce the untimely, and completely unexpected, death of Nedalia's favorite son.

He stepped up to the podium and looked directly into the flashing cameras. None of the reporters had a clue. With the current tension boiling in the region, they probably expected it to be an announcement about Paladin Technologies, or an official statement on Lady Viannor taking over Starblaydia. Perhaps it was expected to be about SDL and its growth. He looked down at his piece of paper and began to open his mouth...

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, its good to see you all out here today. What I am about to tell you is, and will continue to be for the rest of my life, the hardest thing I will ever say."

He looked up, trying to gulp down the huge knot in his throat. The silence in the room was deafening.

"Around 3:30 in the afternoon today, our dear President passed away due to age. He had contracted an illness, and it quickly consumed what remained of his weak immune system. President Andrew Bren of Nedalia was officially announced dead at..."

He looked away from the microphone, unable to control his tears anymore. He sobbed, sniffed, and let out a loud whimper, loosing his self-control. With his eyes watered up, he looked back up to the press. A complete look of shock was evident. Cameramen had put their cameras down and just stared at Henry. Microphones that were raised to get his voice had found their way to the ground. Tears were materializing fast on the faces of every reporter in the room. He mustered up the courage and continued:

"Excuse me. President Andrew Bren of Nedalia was officially announced dead at 3:32 PM this afternoon. A funeral will be held this coming Friday, where there his coffin will walk through the formerly named Freden Road, now called Andrew Bren Road, on the way to the Kafra Cemetery. To all diplomats, dignitaries, and leaders of the region, they are invited to attend his private burial. Thank you."

Henry turned away and walked of the stage. For the first time since he had began working this job, there was no questions. Just silence.

Outside the Prime Ministers residence a press conference was being held.

"I wish to express our nations condolences to the Nedalians as at 3:32pm Nedalian time, nearly four and a half hours ago Nedalian President Andrew Bren died at home due to sickness. The President was a man beloved by his countrymen and a strong leader both in his own country and on the regional scene.

He had a crucial role in the setting up of weapons research company Paladin Technologies and was instrumental in the foundation of the Strategic Defense League. This is made all the worse by Nedalia's proximity to us both politcally and geographically. I will have the solemn duty of representing Bazalonia at the funeral of the late-President. May our thoughts and best wishes be with the family and friends of the late-president and also with the nation of Nedalia as it tries to deal with the loss of it's foremost statesman.

Thank You."

"...we interrupt 101 World Cup Goals to bring you this newsflash.

"President Andrew Bren, of our southern neighbours Nedalia, had died after a short illness. Bren was one of the founding fathers of the Strategic Defence League, and with the changing political situation in the region bringing the Verdenan nation closer to our own, President Domasca has already stated her intention to attend Bren's funeral personally.

"More on this in the main news bulletin at seven."

Yet another man rushed into Great Leader Gonnenberg's very busy office.

"Sir," he panted, "President Bren of Nedalia has died. "

"Your kidding, right?"

"No sir, look at this."

"Oh my god! That's horrible and at a time like this. Well get me a flight to Nedalia ASAP, I want to console them and give support to our very helpful neighbors. Well what are you waiting for, go!"

The man ran out of the room still tired.

Earlier today, in the Assemblée Nationale...

Joe Conford(Parti Capitalizte), MAN for Ennemy City East: I'm suggesting that a bill about a reform of the educational system. Some people will say that...

Richard Levasseur, Speaker(Président) of the Assemblée Nationale: I'm sorry to tell you people, that today's deliberations have to be stopped for a while. I just received, from the International Press, a notice about one of our future allies... President Andrew Bren, of Nedalia, just died from an illness. His death was pronounced at 3:32PM AOTC. I just called the President and the Senate to come in here. During that time, the parliament is suspended.

Half an hour later...

Richard Levasseur, Speaker(Président) of the Assemblée Nationale: Please welcome the honourable senators of Oliverry

*Integral applause of the assemblée*

Richard Levasseur, Speaker(Président) of the Assemblée Nationale: And now, please welcome your president, Jioulit Twaxlit.

*Integral applause of the assemblée*

Jioulit Twaxlit, President of Oliverry: Welcome everyone to that meeting. My message will be quite short. I knew Mr. Bren in the last times of his life and I can tell he was fine. The last reaction I got from him was that letter about our entry to the SDL, where he agreed that we entered the alliance. Anyway, as a future ally, I'm feeling sorry for the people of Nedalia and send my sympathies to Nedalia and to Bren's family. May he rest in peace. Now, let's take a minute of silence...

A minute later...

Jioulit Twaxlit, President of Oliverry: Thank you everyone. I'll let you return to your own business now. My speech is finished.

The official announcement had set off a firestorm in the Lamonian government. Everyone knew that this had to happen sooner or later, but most were hoping that their friend and ally would be able to shake off his disease. President Bren was dead.

Already, the press conference was being held; President Stone being the bearer of bad news to the Lamonian public.

"Today at 3:30 PM Nedalian time, our dear friend and ally President Bren died of a combination of age and disease. We express our condolences to the Nedalian nation, and also the friends and family of President Bren. Our nation, and indeed; the whole region will mourn the passing of a great man who was insturmental in helping us create the SDL, and Paladin Technologies. We wish his successor well, as he or she will have the shoes of a political giant to fill. I have had the pleasure of meeting President Bren many times; and I can tell you that he was always full of life, and basking in the love of his nation. Thank you."

Official Dispatch from the Office of the Patriarch:

"Myself and the entire Dominion of Khazaron mourn the passing of this great man and loyal friend. He reached out to the Dominion in some of its darkest hours and didn't hesistate to grant to us whatever was needed to help our citizens get back on their feet. Through his kind gestures and warm demeanor, the people of both Khazaron and Nedalia have become much closer. I wont hesitate to say that not only will the late President Bren be missed greatly by his own citizens, but also greatly here in Khazaron as well. That is why I am designating today a day of mourning throughout the whole of Khazaron and asking for a moment of silence on behalf of our fallen comrade. I, along with several other members of my cabinet, plan on paying our last respects to him at the upcomming funeral and nothing but our warmest regards and hearfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. If you need anything from us at all, don't hesitate to ask."

Queen Sonya Sabre was preparing for dinner with Lord Dorian who had just returned from the latest of his many adventures. It was the first time that the couple would dine together in nearly a month. The sound of a soft knock on the door told the Queen that things would not be going according to plan.

“M’Lady. I have very hard news to bring you.” Adam Mikaris was the Minister of Media Relations for the Queen. “Very hard news. It has just been announced that President Bren of Nedalia has passed on to the Next Realm.”

Queen Sonya was speechless. This had been very unexpected news. She was silent for a moment. “Make plans for mine and the King’s departure to Nedalia. And tell Lord Dorian that airplane food will have to do for this meal.”

This would not be the normal visit abroad she had become accustomed to. This would be a very difficult week.

It had been a couple of days now, but Foreign Minister Dewars Strand was still having trouble keeping the tears in. The country was in official mourning; business had come to a standstill. Nedalia's first and only president, Andrew Bren, had perished. Strand sobbed, grabbed the telephone and called his aide.

"Hello Junior...How are you?...Yes, yes everything is fine, lad. I wanted you to check up on who had made their intentions of attending the funeral so that we may have the neccessary security and preparations...I see...Alright, please come to my office, I want to personally thank all those who have sent their condolences at this time...No, I'll take care of that myself. Thank you."

CODE

To My Dear Friends and Allies,

I personally thank you for your wishes and condolences at this testing time. Nedalia had never known a greater man since its end of isolation, and I do believe we won't be seeing another like him for quite some time. He was loved by all, and truly had the good of not only Nedalia, but the entire region at heart.

I would also like to express thanks for all those who will take time out of their busy schedule to fly into Nedalia to attend the burial. It would have meant so much to President Bren, I know that much. I hope to see all of you there. May he rest in enternal peace.

Dewars Strand

"This is a difficult situation, Tommy." Harry Livingston, Liverpool England's Foreign Minister and outgoing-de facto Chacoran Foreign Minister, spoke lougly through his phone. Reception was bad; he was on a private train in a tunnel, while Prime Minister of Chacor and Liverpool England Thomas Douglas was in an enclosed room on PAX Island in The Heartland, fighting a case before the Supreme Court of the Heartland.

"Yes, I know. I'm definitely unable to attend President Bren's funeral, I'm still stuck here. Vice-Premier Martin (James Martin-Gibson) is scheduled to welcome the Bazalonian guy, I heard. Which means you or Yuri Noble will have to do the job."

"Fair enough, Tommy, I'll see to it that Yuri gets on a plane immediately."

Yuri Noble was the incomin Chacoran Foreign Affairs Minister; he had served for six years under Livingston as Chacor Secretary to the Advisor for External Affairs (Livingston was the "Liverpool England Senior Advisor for Chacoran External Affairs"), until a recent movement by Douglas to decrease Liverpool England power in Chacor.

"Yuri! Pack up, you're going to Nedalia as our representative!"

King Falcon donned his black hat and polished the silver handle of his stick, as he paced up to his plane. He had made his excuses and left the ethics debate. Andrew Bren took priority. He would be in Nedalia within two hours. He had packed the black funeral parachute especially.

The Autocracy joins with it’s follow nations in Atlantian Oceania in mourning the passing of a great leader.  I myself feel a deep sense of loss as my very first international exchange was with President Bren and since then, although separated by different political ideologies and alliances, relations between Nedalia and Hypocria have never been less than cordial.

The Autocracy will observe a minutes silence in his honour.

Viannor laughed. She laughed with the demented cackle of one who cared, but yet not.

"Pussies." She shouted at the TV, grown men and women sobbing after the death of some old man. A politician, no less. "Pussies!"

"My Lady," her aide spoke softly, "we need an official response to Bren's passing, Lord Tiberius was once on good terms with the Nedalians, we should not turn our backs on that fact."

"Do as you wish," Viannor said, "I care not for Bren, and never did."

Sirs,

May I extend, on behalf of my entire nation, the thoughts of every Starblaydi being with the nation of Nedalia. As is well known, we in Starblaydia lost our own beloved leader a short time ago, and it is from the experience that we know our Nedalian brothers' pain.

Yours in grief,
