WHITCHURCH, BETTIA

After months of disquiet, the city council of Whitchurch has decided to change the town's name. Speaking exclusively to the BBC (the Bettian Broadcasting Corporation - what other 'BBC' is there?), the city's mayor Bob Jackson said "What's the point of naming this city after a church when there haven't been any churches here for almost 100 years. It's time to stop reminiscing about the past and look to the future - that's why we've decided to change our name."

"Quite what that name is, we haven't been able to decide. We want something to reflect our city's role as the centre of Bettia's IT industry, which as we all know is the only industry in Bettia which isn't crap."

"We want something forward looking, futuristic, but not too tacky. For instance, one of our councillours suggested 'Techno City', but we rejected that because it would make our fair city sound like a giant nightclub."

"If any folks out there could think of a suitable name, that'd be great."

The Nedalian government, in order to aid our friends to the east, have released the story to the people and have promised a gift for any name that is chosen by the Bettian officials, if any at all. So far, they have come up with these suggestions:

Electra, Fortuna, Kahraba (which translates into electricity), Dellion, Porallis, and Taqadum (which translates into 'moving forward.)
Nedalia

Mayor Jackson surveyed the throngs of assembled journalists in front of him - the BBC, Sonastra, The Enlightener, The Gabalfa Observer... all of Bettia's major media players (and a few minor ones to boot) were all present and correct in this conference room within what used to be Whitchurch City Hall.

"Bore Da Ladies and Gentlemen, and thank you all for coming at such short notice. As you know, we asked our friends and neighbours from around AO, and indeed the world, for suggestions for our new name for the city, and I'm glad to say our close allies in Nedalia and Lamoni came up with some stellar examples. After much deliberation, the city council narrowed it down to two but were unable to decide - therefore, we have decided to adopt both. As from now, the city formerly known as Whitchurch shall henceforth be known as..."

With this, he pulled a cord revealing a backdrop bearing the city's new name...

Fortuna Bettialis

The room was instantly filled with the sound of clicking cameras, the scratching of pen on paper, and a number of journos calling their offices with the news. The mayor continued.

"We have decided on this name for four reasons. Firstly, the two parts of this name came from each of the two nations, and we felt it was in Bettia's best interests not to favour one over the other. Secondly, we chose 'Fortuna' because it emphasises the forward-looking approach we were looking. Thirdly, 'Bettialis' was chosen because we feel it gives our city a certain prestige within the Blessed Realm. And fourthly, combining the two names makes our city sound like a football team, which is ideal for a sports-mad city such as ourselves. And whilst I'm on the subject of sports, Whitchurch FC shall now be known as Fortuna Bettialis FC, Whitchurch South End haven't quite decided what they'll be calling themselves yet, and the ice hockey team formerly called the Whitchurch Wizards shall now be known as the Bettialis Bulldogs."

"We would like to thank the people of Lamoni and Nedalia for their gift to us, and I'm sure that our great city of Fortuna Bettialis shall flourish and prosper in the years to come!"

City of Cerignola and Environs - Mayor's Office

Dear Mayor Jackson --

Firstly let me congratulate you on your new name. Not only does it represent what Bettians truly believe in - always looking and putting your best foot forward, and being the best one can be - it, as you said, gives your city and its populace a certain prestige that would certainly presume (rightfully) to go unrivalled among other Bettian settlements.

If you would be interested, perhaps you and I could meet to draw up a Sister Cities Agreement. It would be the first of its kind for Cerignola, and a step towards cementing our two cities' places as premier destinations within our respective states. Not only that, such an agreement would also, I feel, form the foundation for a stronger relationship between the Pacitalian and Bettian governments.

I have assembled an information package on Cerignola I have no doubt you will find intriguing and enlightening. I look very much forward to hearing your response, sir, and once again, my congratulations on the new name.

May God bless the people of Fortuna Bettialis, for now and ever.

Sincera in domina bene,

Amerigo Samanoveri
Mayor of Cerignola

[ OOC: Cerignola is a city of approximately 353,000 people, in the province of Sambuca. It's about 260km north-northwest of Sambuca (the city), and is served by the A1 superhighway and three B-class highways. Cerignola hosts a football club in the Divizione Secunda called FC Maritimo. It was established as a Catholic mission in 1569 and then as a town in 1789, before becoming a city in 1806. The city will be celebrating its bicentennial this year, thusly, and if the agreement was signed, Mayor Jackson would be welcome to attend. If you'd like to see where Cerignola (loosely means "old red oak" in Pacitalian, and pronounced chair-in-yola) is on the map, here's the link ]

Dear Mayor Samanoveri

Many thanks for your kind message. I apologise for not answering sooner, but as you might expect, there is a shedload of things to do around here - roadsigns to reletter, stationery to reprint, sports teams to rename, and so on.

Bettia's premier cartographers have also been busy reprinting the official map of Bettia - in case you're wondering, Fortuna Bettialis is situated in Maes Canolog (Central Province), just south-west of our capital city Gabalfa. We benefit from excellent international road and rail links, along with easy access to Bettia's main airport.

As you may have seen from earlier press releases, our city is the centre of Bettia's blossoming IT industry, with companies such as Impeccable Computers and Zenit Tecnasi having a major prescence here. Our city's main football team are currently in the 2nd Division of the Apex League, and we also boast top flight ice hockey and gridball teams.

On behalf of the people of Fortuna Bettialis, I would like to extend our congratulations on your city's bicetennial. We would very much like to have Cerignola as our Twin City - indeed, town-twinning is a very good idea, and from what I hear other towns and cities in Bettia are also interested in making similar arrangements with throughout this region, and maybe even the world, in the interests of furthering relations. We look forward to visiting Cerignola, and to receiving yourself and your delegation.

May Allah bless both our cities.

Bob Jackson
Mayor of Whitchur... Fortuna Bettialis.
