Coach Bryan Marshall looked things over grimly. His team looked every bit like it was a ragtag bunch of players who in some cases started playing together for the first time.

"We're the first team to represent Sarzonia and we're playing like a bunch of youth leaguers!" Marshall told a media gathering at the first team practice just hours after Vice President for Health and Athletics Jimmy Marshall, the older brother of the coach, announced the team would compete in the Atlantian Oceania region tournament.

By the time the team finished its last round of training before boarding a plane to travel to the tournament three weeks later, the disparate players gelled into a team and the team started to feel comfortable with its system as it began to practice against college sides and an all star team from the Sarzonian Football Confederation.

"We're looking to play an attractive, attacking brand of football, midfielder and team captain Bobby Convey, of the Woodstock Wild said. "Possession will be our main priority, but we'll also look to take a lot of shots."

The team's roster consisted of mostly players from the three year old SFC, and the first two champions made up the bulk of the 18 man roster being sent to the tournament.

ROSTER (starters in bold)
GOALKEEPERS
30 Troy Perkins (Portland): The surprise pick for first-choice goalkeeper, Perkins backstopped Portland to a Cup title last year as the Timbers beat Rochester in golden goal overtime.
1 Kerry Tanner (Portsmouth): Disgruntled over being chosen as the backup to Perkins, Tanner briefly left the team before his coach confronted him. He led the league in goals against average in each of the three seasons.

DEFENDERS
2 Mike Coyle (Woodstock): Left back in the Wild's 4-4-2 alignment. Speedy defender who can make up for occasional lapses in positioning with sheer athleticism.
5 Bryson Juergens (Portland): Plays left fullback for the Timbers but will play sweeper for the national side. Slow, but experienced.
14 William Jackson (Townshend): Despite playing on a team without a home, this steady right fullback showed quick adjustment to playing right halfback for the national team.
18 Taylor Williams (Rochester): Plays right halfback for the Rage and will be first off the bench if Sarzonia needs to make a substitution. Not much pure speed, but tremendous quickness and great smarts.
32 Emacio (Burlington Braves - minor league): Known as a tremendous offensive defender in the new minor league, helped the Braves advance to the most recent Open Cup finals against Woodstock, where the team lost in penalty kicks to the first SFC champions.
34 Antonio Bresco (Emasculata City): Can play defender or midfielder. Led the league in minutes played by bench player. Could start even for most SFC teams, but tires out easily after 65 minutes.

MIDFIELDERS
6 Jeff Conley (Woodstock): Also plays defensive midfield for the Wild. Renowned throughtout the league for shutting down the league's best attacking midfielders and withdrawn forwards. Aggressive streak sometimes results in cautions and sendoffs.
9 Darwin Russell: (Nicksia): Tremendous left-side player with a deadly accurate free kick from that side. Can be roughed up and taken out of his game.
10 Bobby Convey: (Woodstock): Team captain. Easily the best playmaker in all of Sarzonia. Very experienced. Able to relate to all his teammates well.
16 Barry Owens: (Portland): Right-sided player with near-deadly accuracy. Injuries and age are beginning to catch up to him, but he tries to make up for it with savvy. The teams's alternate captain.
21 Martin Overton (Richmond): Plays defensive midfield for Richmond, but can also join the attack in a pinch. Has played withdrawn forward at times when the club team was hit by injuries or suspensions.
17 George Mitcham (Ontario, Emasculata): Sarzonia's first foreign-based player, plays attacking midfield for the brand-new league in Emasculata. The level of play there is inferior to Sarzonia's league, so he is a potential bench player.

FORWARDS
12 Wilson Jordan (Portland): Set a league record this season with 21 goals in 28 games. Terrific first touch, but needs a playmaking midfielder to serve the ball to him. Not known for his work ethic when he's not on the attacking end of the pitch.
13 Anton Gregor (Daurmont, Isselmere-Nieland): Withdrawn forward who doesn't see much playing time on the capital city's best side. However, helped Portland win the SFC Cup last season with 13 goals, including four playoff tallies and the match winner last season.
22 Brian Wilson (Joe Gibbs University): Not often that a college player would be on the roster of a national side, but has terrific skills for his age and great football awareness. His father is the national team's top assistant coach, so he often thinks like a coach on the pitch.
31 Barry Alphonso (Emasculata City): Can play either withdrawn forward or striker for his club team. Led the league with 19 goals last season. Set records for most goals in Joe Gibbs University's history as a four year starter.

Talented goalie, also Rangers' penalty specialist.

Father-figure lacks pace, but there is no better reader of the game.

"Super-Sub" is pacey, but tires easy.

FORWARDS

Former golden boy of the Celestials, lost place after disappointing Baptism Of Fire campaign.

Lot of Trevors on your side.

Maybe to confuse you, I could just have my team yell "TREVOR!" at certain inopportune times. tongue.gif laugh.gif
