Nojika Makes History
First Round Win In First Ever AO Bowl

WOODSTOCK, Sar. -- For the first time in Atlantian Oceania's history, the top 12 Gridball teams in the region have come together to compete in the first ever A.O. Bowl. The 12 teams have been organized into 3 divisions, the Northern, Central and Southern Divisions. The Northern Division consists of Space Union, Lamoni, Oliverry, and Sarzonia. The Central Division is made up of Bedistan, Pacitalia, Milchama, and Bettia. And the Southern Division contains teams from ASMV, Legalese, Nedalia, and Nojika.

Our very own Panther's from the Imperial City went up against a defence-minded team out of Andossa Se Mitrin Vega today. "We've got a solid, all around good team, but we went up against one of the toughest defences we plan to face and were shut down each time we made an attempt in our opponents red zone," said Panther's Wide Reciever Mathew Zehnder.

Quarterback Micky Cadmus was unable to throw for a single touchdown throughout the game, regaurdless of his record breaking career in Nojika, and Running Back Eric Rotolo (not to be confused with the Wide Reciever whose name is Erik Rotolo) was unable to get past the opponents D-Line for a touchdown.

As far as Smashmouth was concerened, it would be to not allow themselves to get tired. With such a weak offence, the team often went three and out quickly which time after time forced their defence to return to the field. The final whistle eventually blew and the teams remained even with 0 points for both sides. A dreaded overtime would settle the score with an eventual 36 yard field goal by Nojika's Allan Yung.

Stingrays fall to 'Frenchies'

PORTLAND (ASP) -- Sarzonia's return to international gridball after their loss in NS Bowl V didn't exactly turn out as legendary coach Joe Gibbs hoped. The veteran coach nearly sent kicker Nick Novak in to play quarterback after Mark Bryan turned in a 12 for 29 performance, throwing for only 154 yards in Sarzonia's 27-16 loss to Oliverry in their first game in the inaugural AO Bowl.

Besides Bryan's ineffective outing (he also threw three interceptions), running back Ervin Jones rushed for only 61 yards on 22 carries. H-back Chris Cooley caught four passes for 71 yards, including a 36 yard scoring strike for Sarzonia's only touchdown of the game.

"We were just completely out of sync the whole ballgame," said Gibbs, whose team mustered only 234 total yards against a team not known for having one of the tough defences in the AO Bowl. "We were just lucky we didn't face those guys from ASMV. Wow, those guys are tough."

Sarzonia's only other bright spot was kicker Nick Novak, who kicked three field goals, the longest from 48 yards into a light wind. Novak was signed when kicker John Hall tweaked his quadriceps just two days before the first game of the tournament, but Gibbs said, "[Novak] was kicking the ball real well in warmups and practice and he brought that to the game. It'll be tough to take him out of there now."

Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams took responsibility for the team's defensive failings, in which they allowed Oliverry to run for 195 rushing yards and all Oliverry three touchdowns.

"Lay that one on me," Williams said. "I didn't adjust to what they were doing to us."

The Stingrays (0-1) face Lamoni next game and Gibbs is already looking ahead to that game.

"We really need to win this next game against the Hawks," Gibbs said. "If we don't, we're out of the running."

Smashmouth Defense Does Job- But Not Enough

The first ever AO Bowl saw our own Smashmouth square off against the Panthers of Nojika in the first game. And as was expected, the Defense was in full force.

"The only thing that really ticks me off is that we let Rotolo break the century mark. You can bet we will work not to let that happen again anytime soon" said an angry DE Aaron Kowolkowski as he slammed a chair repeatedly into the wall of the locker room.

The Smashmouth new from the outset that their defense would be the key. The offense sucks that much. And they came shining through. The balanced team from Nojika no doubt figured to score more than 3 points and that in OT.

"We did what we came out to do. I guarantee a lot of their players will be hunting the trainers tomorrow in search of ice" said LB Cyril Betts. "They were worried about us getting tired and that just didnt happen. We can play the full 60 if needed, and with our offense that is indeed possible"

ASMV had a few chances. Kronstedt had a 65 yard TD called back due to a holding penalty on RG Octavio Rindell. TE Herschell Mervin dropped a TD at the end of the first half. And Kicker Sabrina Kaitlynn Missed a 51 yard FG attempt in OT before Young nailed his for the Panthers.

"We just need to take advantage of our chances. The defense will be there" said QB Wurtzel. "I think every team here knows thet our D is for real now"

The stats we care about:

DE A Kowolkowski - 3 sacks + 3 hurries
DT E Pleasant - 1 sack + 12 tackles
OLB C Betts - 10 tackles + 2 forced fumbles
CB E Wonjowski 2 INT + 6 tackles
SS D Holdt 1 INT + 4 hurries + 1 forced fumble

Defense does job, stops Bettia from scoring more points

The defense played well enough today for the Milchama Attackers football team. The Attackers shot out to a 24-7 lead. The lead soon eroded for the Attackers as the offense sputtered on incomplete passes by Mallard. The Bettians had managed to tie the game 28-28 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was the most defensive in Milchamian football history as the total number of points scored in that scored in that quarter were 14, one touchdown for each team. Brooking getting the touchdown for the Attackers.

The second half was nearly a carbon copy of the first half except the Bettians did the jumping out to the leading as at the end of the third quarter they were up 56-49. They extended their lead in the 4th quarter as <insert name here> (OOC: to lazy to check the rosters) ran past the defense and scored to extend the Arora lead to 63-49. Then Mallard operated. He got the first touchdown on two plays the final 53 yard pass going to Kenny Tennion. Then after a successful onside kick, the Attackers got the ball back. After a 38 yard run by Brooking and a timeout Mallard hit Kenny Tennion again with the game tying touchdown at 70-70. The game clock had run out soon after that so that meant over time (how is overtime done, NFL style, College style, does a coin toss decide how it is done or XFL style?) The Aroras won the coin toss but on the first play in overtime Kevin Nunnall intercepted the Bettian QB's pass and got the ball to the 5 yard line. From there Thomas Brooking ran the ball in to score to win the game for the Attackers 76-70.

Space Union 27, Lamoni 26

In a match that stayed close right up until the end, the Hawks lost to Space Union by a single point, which came out of a last minute touchdown. The Space Union kicker missed the extra point, but that didn't matter. The Hawks are currently in third place in their division, and face fourth place Sarzonia in their next match. Both teams will be playing to remain in the running for the playoffs, and it should be an exciting match. Both countries are SDL allies, but don't expect that to have an effect on the power of the expected tackles in the match.

Pacitalian gridball team falls to Bedistan in thriller

Pacitalia's first AO Bowl matchup ended in a loss but the game was certainly a thriller from start to finish, as the home side jumped to a 10-0 lead early under the leadership of starting quarterback Sorino Zunga, but let Bedistan back into the game and lost on a late major by the opposing side. The final score was 34-27.

Star running back Maloni MalĂłn carried the ball 19 times for 188 yards on the ground, including a delectable 34 yard run in which he evaded 11 tackles before being turfed by the Bedistani linebacker. Zunga threw 22-39 for 303 yards and 2 TD but it wasn't enough as the Bedistani offence came through in the clutch, delivering three smooth blows to the Pacitalian defence and scoring two unanswered touchdowns to tie the game and then, take the lead through to the end of the game.

"We played a very solid game," Zunga said post-match. "We just need to better control the game when we are winning - if we do that, we will end up with two points instead of zero. That was the reason we lost today. We controlled the flow of the game early but lost because we were too comfortable with a ten-point lead."

Pacitalia: 10 | 7 | 7 | 3 || 27
Bedistan: 0 | 9 | 11 | 14 || 34

Firestrikers Beat Division Leader Oliverry In Another Narrow Win!

Woodstock, Sarzonia - In another win for the Space Union Firestrikers, the team faced off against Northern Division leader, Oliverry and successfully beat them in a narrow game with the final score being 24-22, a marginal victory similar to the previous game against Lamoni, but enough to propel the Firestrikers as the Division leader for the Northern Division.

In a spectacular game cheered on by millions of Space Union fans, the Firestrikers performed better than expected against the Division leader. Although the Firestrikers lagged behind in the first quarter 7-14, they made up in the later 3 quarters with 2 touchdowns, scoring 21-17, and making a 1 field goal in the last quarter before time ran out for a final score of 24-22. In the game, Firestriker's Quarterback, Yashdeep Grey, performed exceptionally by passing clean passes the entire game with only one fumble by Wide Receiver Satsir Mann, which he recovered shortly afterwards to score a touchdown. But the highligh pass was when Yashdeep made a pass from the 80 yard line and Running Back Bobby Grey made a perfect catch and ran it straight to the endzone to score Space Union another touchdown.

Meanwhile, the Defense played perfectly in line with two sacks by Defensive Tackle Raja Brar and Defensive End Salman Jisper. Meanwhile, the defense also blocked 2 passes by the Oliverry quarterback, though no interceptions were made by the Defense for the entire game. But in the end, they did there job, which was to prevent the other team from scoring points.

As Space Union advances to Division leader, its next game will be against hometurf team of Sarzonia (ranking 4th in the Northern Division), which is expected to be an interesting game nonetheless with Sarzonian team's coach being the legendary Joe Gibbs. We will provide up-to-date coverage on this as Firestrikers are posed to enter the Playoffs of the AO Gridball Cup.

Defense Holds Again; Offense Still Sucks

Nedalia 12, ASMV 6 (OT)

The Smashmouth entered the game knowing the offense would do very little. And they were right. The good point was the defense was brilliant again. Big play after big play held Nedalia to six points im regulation play. And surprisingly the offens matched those points. Sabrina Kaitlynn became the first woman to score in this tourney (she might be the only one playing) by nailing fieldgoals from 42 and 49 yards.

And once again the game went to OT. And once again ASMV fell short. Nedalia took the ball down th field in OT and ended the game without the Smashmouth having the opportunity to score themselves.

The highlight of the game was a sack from CB Wonjowski that sent the Nedalian QB's hlmet through the back of the end zone.

Perhaps we can pull something out of our hat. One thing is for sure - our D will keep all the games close

Stingrays fall short again, 20-19

PORTLAND (ASP) -- With 1:36 remaining and the Sarzonian national gridball team out of time outs and Lamoni running the ball for 147 yards against the Stingrays' defence, the situation looked hopeless. But defensive tackle Andre Reynolds forced and recovered a Mark Holiday fumble and quarterback Mark Bryan hit H-back Chris Cooley for a 24 yard scoring pass that looked like it would tie the game and force it into overtime.

Then the special teams let down the Stingrays. Kicker Nick Novak's extra point was blocked when "the line just gave way," and Lamoni held on for a 20-19 victory in a game Coach Joe Gibbs called a "brutal loss."

"That was very tough. Our guys fought their guts out and gave it everything they had but we just fell short. We did everything we could, but we just didn't get it done out there."

Bryan had a much better game than his 12 for 29 effort against Oliverry. He completed 21 of 29 passes for 318 yards and two touchdowns, but the team's running game sputtered in the red zone. Ervin Jones rushed for 87 yards on 21 carries, but failed on four consecutive carries inside the one yard line with 4:27 to go in regulation. A touchdown would have given the Stingrays a 21-13 lead.

"It's on me, man," Jones said. "I didn't do a good enough job when we got in there. The line did a good job stopping their penetration, but I just didn't get the job done."

"We had our other guys injured," Gibbs said when he was asked why the team didn't go to its Jumbo sets with three tight ends or Heavy Jumbo with four tight ends. "I figured we could get the ball in there with our regular sets."

The Stingrays (0-2) most likely will be playing for pride in their last game against group leading Space Union, but Gibbs said the team would approach it like a do or die game.

"We're playing in front of our home fans. We're going to have to be ready to play as hard as we can. Perhaps we can play spoiler," Gibbs said.

from the Bedistan Sports Digest:

Gridball win brings high excitement

One thing is certain: nobody could complain that Bedistan's second AO Bowl game against Milchama was boring. To be honest, though, this probably wasn't so much due to the Porcupines' play as it was due to Milchama's. Milchama jumped out to an early 14-0 lead less than six minutes into the game, which served as a big wake-up call for the Porcupines. A pair of touchdowns by Hilton Wells tied the score, but Milchama's relentless offense refused to let the game stay that way, and the first quarter ended with Milchama holding a seven-point lead. A quick field goal and another touchdown to start the second quarter extended Milchama's lead to 31-14, but about midway through the second quarter the momentum began to turn. Bedistan's other two wide receivers, Khréstos and Yu-Ju, got on the scoreboard with a touchdown each, separated by Peter Salter's successful 29-yard field goal. This cracker of a game went into halftime in a 31-31 deadlock.

The third quarter was very much give and take - first came a Bedistani touchdown to give the Porcupines their first lead of the game, then Milchama scored another one to tie it and then went ahead 41-38 on a field goal of their own. But then came three Porcupines touchdowns in a row, including Jake Thrasher's superb 74-yard TD run. The Attackers rebounded slightly at the end of the quarter, but still went into the last fifteen minutes trailing 59-48. It only took a minute and a half for the Porcupines to extend the lead to 66-48, apparently making them think they had the game wrapped up. Big mistake. Two quick opposing touchdowns turned it into a four-point game and left fans very nervous. Fortunately, the Bedistani defense held strong, and the 66-62 scoreline endured to the final buzzer.

With this win, Bedistan find themselves 2-0 so far in the tournament and leading the Central Division. "It's good to see that there's finally an AO regional tournament that we're good at," said one fan, obviously referring to the nations' AOCAF failures.

Lamoni 20, Sarzonia 19

Lamoni now has a 3rd place 1-1 record in the AO Griball bowl Northern division after a 20-19 victory against Sarzonia. Sarzonia had a chance to tie things up on an extra point after Sarzonian QB Mark Bryan hit HB Chris Cooley for a 24 yard touchdown strike; but when the Sarzonian line broke down, Lamoni was able to block the kick. Sarzonia was also able to block a Lamonian extra point, but it wasn't needed to win this match. After dashing any Sarzonian hopes for a playoff match, Lamoni will face Oliverry in a do or die game to see who goes to the playoffs. We haven't heard much out of the team from Oliverry, but the Hawks will get what there is.

Pacitalia rebounds to win 54-50, next game do-or-die

In a game that wasn't exactly a good example of a solid defence, Pacitalia's Sorino Zunga threw 44-55 for 389 yards and 4 TD as Pacitalia hung on to defeat Bettia 54-50 in game two of the inaugural AO Bowl for Gridball.

Maloni Malon was solid on the ground, punching in 2 TDs for the winning cause. However, stumbles in Pacitalia's defence in the third quarter allowed the Bettians to get back in the game, and it wasn't until Zunga's final touchdown pass of the game to WR Tommaso Benficalzo that the game seemed finally sealed up at 54-47.

Then, Pacitalia's defence stepped in and prevented a touchdown to tie, forcing the Bettians into a last-second field-goal which sealed the win for the Pacitalians (1-1). The loss was the second for Bettia, which may still be in the tournament depending on how the other teams in the division play out.

Which is why Pacitalia's final game of the round-robin, against Milchama, is doubly important. A loss will eliminate the Pacitalians and send Bedistan and Milchama through to the playoffs, while a win will force Milchama to third and bump Pacitalia into second and a possible shot at a playoff berth.

"Simply put, a second-place finish is much better for our chances," coach Demitoro Santo Magano said. "If we are third, we are probably not going to make it through to the next round. We are trying our best, but the results are just not coming through the way we had hoped. Destiny does still seem to be in our hands, so we will be looking forward to this next game and practicing hard."

ASMV Winless - Another Team Briused

The Smashmouth once again held a team to 0 points in regulation. They also failed to score again themselves. Legalese won the game 3-0 in OT.

After giving up only 6 points 12 quarters of play (not counting OT). No one wants to see ASMV pop up on their schedule next time around. Good luck to those of you who have advanced.

Firestrikers Strike Sarzonian Team Down!

Woodstock, Sarzonia - In a powerful game, the Space Union Firestriker gridball team beat #4-ranked Sarzonian gridball team. In a stunning victory, that was played while by both sides, Space Union won 30-26.

On Sunday, both Sarzonia and Space Union teams faced off. Space Union's Firestrikers entered the game in an attempt to further solidify their score while the Sarzonian team led by Joe Gibbs, entered the game in an attempt to stop the Space Union Firestrikers and dislodge them from Division leader, though, they wouldn't be going to the semi-finals in anyway, but being a spoiler seemed to be Joe Gibbs strategy for the entire game.

Early in the 1st quarter, the Firestrikers took the lead by the first touchdown with a brilliant play by Quarterback Yashdeep Grey, which had him fake a successful hand-off to Runningback Bobby Grey before throwing a 20 yard pass from the 50 yard line to the 70 yard line to Wide Receiver Satsir Mann who ran the ball to the endzone. After that, the Firestriker's kicker, Sajade Khan, made an unsuccessful field goal, though, leaving the score at 6-0.

After that, the Sarzonian team was able to score a field goal on the 4th down on the 80th yard line, putting the score at 6-3. After that the first quarter ended with the Firestrikers in the lead. The second quarter played slow with the Sarzonian's temporarly taking advantage of a breech in the Firestriker's defense and scored a touchdown and successful field goal putting them in the lead at 6-10. But the Firestrikers struck back by scoring another touchdown from the 70 yard line with Yashdeep throwing a long pass, which was caught by Akalbeer Grewal, putting the score at 13-10, giving the Firestrikers the lead that they would keep for the rest of the game.

In the third quarter, the Firestrikers' coach, Bikhramjit Singh, ordered the offensive as the Firestrikers made its first play, with Runningback Bobbey Grey driving the ball to the 47th yard line. There Yashdeep passed once more to an open Satsir Mann, who made the run and got to the end zone, putting the score at 20-10. But the Sarzonians weren't deterred as they made another successful touchdown, after an interception by them, which they turned into a successful touchdown, putting the score at 20-17. But the Firestrikers sought back by taking it to the next level by scoring a successful touchdown and field goal, resulting in a score of 27-17. Sarzonians tried once more, though, and were able to make a touchdown through a slip in the offense, when Akalbeer Grewal fumbled the ball and the Sarzonians recovered it for a touchdown, putting the score at 27-23, because of a missed field goal.

In the fourth quarter, neither team scored any successful touchdowns, though, but each side managed to make a field goal, ending the game at 30-26 as the final score. The Firestrikers cheered on at the win as they headed to the semi-finals as the number one team so far in the cup. The team is now headed to the semi-finals now.
