V is for Victory! Myrtannia Sweeps Past Second Place Amarenthe!
Palestrato di Santo Bernando in Monterio, Margheria, Pacitalia - If there was any remaining doubt that Myrtannia is for real, it was swept aside in the action of Day 4. In what would've been a stunning upset just two days ago, and was still a convincing yet surprising victory today, Myrtannia kept the heat on the competition to take its third straight curling victory. Doubters back home have begun to have faith in the team, even the most outspoken critic of sending a curling team in the first place, columnist Ezequiel Morda.
"I thought it was ridiculous at first, but look what they're doing now. Dominating the competition, making the country proud, racking up lots of W's. Plus, our fans help make it more exciting to watch," Morda pronounced.
Back on the ice, the match was supposed to be a close one, but never really got that way. Amarenthe came into the match as something of an enigma; while they had won their first two matches in convincing fashion, then-winless Legalese had their number and knocked Amarenthe off by one point. Still, Amarenthe hadn't lost any matches in shorter than 12 ends, and seemed to be hungry to get back on track against first place Myrtannia.
It didn't go down that way. Amarenthe took a 1-0 lead after the first end, but would trail for the rest of the match. Powered and emboldened by the hardest practice yet, and the ever present throng of Myrtannian fans and flags, Myrtannia dealt with their opponents in convincing fashion. Whereas Myrtannia had trailed 4-1 after four ends in both its previous matches, the team scored early and often against Amarenthe. After four ends, the score stood Myrtannia 5, Amarenthe 1.
"Yeah we bolted out of the gates tonight. We felt we had something to prove against Amarenthe, so we wanted to show off our talent to the region. Of course, it's not over 'til the fat moose belches," commented Myrtannia curler Emilee Gliwski.
And it wasn't quite over after four, either. Amarenthe kept on coming at Myrtannia, scoring two points in the next two ends to make it 3-5. That's as close as they would get, however, as Myrtannia scored again in the seventh. Another Amarenthe score took it to 4-6, but they were shut down by Myrtannia in the final two. The rest of the points were just icing on the cake for Myrtannia, as they scored 3 more in the final two ends to push the score to 9-4, and set off a massive celebration in the stands.
"We came, we saw, we curled!", proclaimed Warner Mozley, "We had something to prove, and I think we've solidly proven it tonight. Amarenthe didn't give up, they kept fighting - I'll give them points for tenacity. But tonight was our night, and were on top of the world right now!"
Or at least on top of Group A; the victory and Iskonic falling means that Myrtannia not only sits in sole possession of first, they have secured the top seed in Group A with one game remaining. Since all the other squads in Group A hold at least 2 losses, and by virtue of Myrtannia's 3-0 record, the worst Myrtannia can now finish is 3-1. Still first place, and still guaranteed a playoff spot.
However, Myrtannia don't plan to let their guard down despite this turn of events that seemed unlikely when the AOCOC began. On the contrary, the win has only made them push harder, striving to keep up the success they have so far enjoyed. All that remains between Myrtannia and a perfect round robin record is Iksonic, the other team with 15:1 odds at the start of the tournament. However, Iksonic has not enjoyed the success Myrtannia has - they have fallen twice in three matches.
"That just makes them more dangerous, really - they've got to win to secure a playoff spot, but they've also got a golden opportunity to play spoiler here. We're riding high on the hog at the moment, but if we slip up now they could put us in a funk we might never get out of. So we're working just as hard as we did in preparation for Amarenthe, and taking Iksonic very, very seriously," Luangxay explained to the press, "And once again, I need to get back to practice. Go Myrtannia!"
The final note in the the symphony of success against Amarenthe was one that people in Pacitalia know all too well - the Myrtannian fans. Filling the stadium with a sea of orange and blue, Sun Bursts waving proudly everywhere the eye could see, and chanting, cheering, and jeering through the match, they certainly helped Myrtannia remain unbeaten. Chants of "Myr-tan-nia! Myr-tan-nia!" filled the stands, as well as roaring cheers when the team scored.
"We owe them a lot of credit. They make this all that much more fun," Rikki Falconeri said of the fans, "Plus, my boyfriend's up there, which makes this all the more encouraging."
Next up, as stated, is Iksonic, who are amongst no less than three teams battling for playoff position in Group A. Tune in for Day 5: Myrtannia v. Iksonic tomorrow on AIR 4 (check local listings). |

3-0 and Looking Great!
Well here we are again. Curling. And with the public support this tourney has garnered, curling might just be our new national passtime. It's fun and a whole lot safer than dueling
And someone has said that we talk too much. Phooey! Who can ever be accused of too much talk on such a wonderful sport? NOBODY! Man that was so funny! :D
Now on to MD4 and the match against Krytenia.
Skip Omer Allegre had the boys ready to play once again. And, just like the Spruitland game, they jumped all over the competition early and often. Scoring 2 rocks in an end is a great accomplishment. Doing it in 5 consecutive ends borders on the amazing. But that is just what the team did. Everything that could go wrong for Krytenia did so as they fell behind 10-0.
Then the concentration and focus of the boys from D&S fell apart. Krytenia scored 5 rocks in ends 6-8. But it would not be enough as the match ended there. Score - D&S 10 - 5 Krytenia.
Allegre was furious after the letdown in the last ends. Sure, we still won, but it wasnt nearly as pretty as it could have been. "Shouting could be heard all the way to the parking lot. "What the hell do you mean letting up like that?! You had better stay focused next time!"
That "next time" is Milchama. They have struggled a bit, but need a win over us in the worst way. A mental breakdown against them could mean big trouble for what has been an amazing run for D&S thus far.
In other action:
Amarenthe lost again, this time to Myrtannia. We said Myrtannia was starting to look like the best in Group A. Now they are proving it.
Chacor needed 12 ends to beat Iksonic in a 5-4 scoring fest. The defensive play from both sides was astounding.
Bettia showed more of their promise by handing Spruitland an 8-6 defeat. Look for Bettia to be the team to push us as things move on. |

NEWS FROM LAGOA BAY, capital of IKSONIC
Curling championship is coming to the final matches of the group stage, so it will be very interesting to proceed the final push for the quaters. Iksonic,after a perfec start with victory, lost the next two games ,so the last is must win.
Our opponent is very solid,and popular these days,because of it's good results here. It's Myrtannia.
About 5000 people from Iksonic arrived in the town to cheer for their country to reach the quaters as 3rd or 4th placed. It will be achievment to be in the quaters, so every result after that will be good and respected. LIVE broadcats will be shown tommorow on IKS sport TV , with all rewievs for all games so far.

Too Close For Comfort! Myrtannia Edges Iksonic in Close Match!
Palestrato di Santo Bernando in Monterio, Margheria, Pacitalia - Sitting high atop Group A, Myrtannia went into the final match day of the round robin stage gauranteed of first place. Whether their high positioning got to them or not is up for debate, but they went on to play the closest game yet in the AOCOC for the once 15:1 longshot Myrtannians. The day's opponent: Iksonic, who had struggled so far.
After expecting a close match with Amarenthe, Myrtannia got that close match late - against Iksonic, of all teams. Myrtannia didn't underestimate their opponent, but their opponent nearly pulled off the upset, anyway. It was, perhaps, the best match the Iksonic squad has played thus far, despite losing.
"They really played well tonight, and for that I give them all the credit in the world. Iksonic gave us a good, tight match," admitted Warner Mozley.
On the ice, it started off as so many matches do for the Myrtannian curlers - outscored early, but rallied late. In the opening five ends, it was all Iksonic, much to the delight of that team's fans, flown in for the match. After five, the undefeated Myrtannians faced a 2-4 defecit.
"What can I say, they played extremely well out there the whole match. We just finally getting good throws in the last five," commented Rikki Falconeri.
The Myrtannian fans were as loud as ever, though they were silenced early by Iksonic's outsanding play. However, as Myrtannia recovered, so did its fans - by the tenth, they were on their feet, waving flags, and generally making a ruckus. In the final five, Myrtannia got smart and took control as best it could in the face of this new challenge. Outscoring Iksonic 6-4 in those ends was just enough to push Myrtannia over the edge to victory.
Going into the tenth, the score was Myrtannia 8, Iksonic 5, and the fans in orange and blue were raising the roof, easily louder than the fans of their opponent. However, Iksonic managed to score two before Myrtannia's defensive maneuvering finally stopped them. With what could be desribed as a sigh of relief, the Myrtannian fans cheered even louder when the final score was announced: Myrtannia 8, Iksonic 7.
At 4-0, Myrtannia finished the round robin stage with a perfect record, and heads into the elimination round as Group A's number one seed. However, they will face the only team who got close to beating them - the familiar face of Iksonic - in the first round. This seems to have driven the Myrtannians to practice harder than ever before.
"This last match was too close for comfort; we need to take it up a notch defensively this time to really give us some breathing room. We can't let ourselves go through a scare like that again. They played amazingly, but we're determined to keep going," skip Filiberto Luangxay told the media during a break in the intense practice, "We'll be ready for them in the first round. We respect their ability, and that's what's driving us to practice harder than ever. Myrtannia wants this next game, and we'll work our hardest to deliver it. Now, if you'll excuse me - "
He trailed off, but the Myrtannian media nodded and completed the answer, "I've got to get back to practice."
On a side note, Myrtannian fans have begun camping outside the box office to make sure they have the majority of seats for the team's first round elimination match.

D&S On Criuse Control
Dorian and Sonya tool the ice against Milchama in the last of the qualifying matches. Two blowout wins in a row had D&S setting pretty for a letdown, and that is just what Milchama tried to get today. They started very quickly and scored two rocks in the 1st end. But the great start would not hold up, and that is what they finished with.
Dorian and Sonya, on the other hand, seemed to struggle in a very well played match. Not once did the squad manage to score more than one rock. But they did have 6 one rock ends. The 6 points was the lowest of the tourney so far, but we will take an ugly win anyday.
Now for the crap some people call hype. D&S enters the knockout stages as the number one seed. They also sport the best odds given to win at 4:1. When asked about those stats, Skip Omer Allegre had this to say:
"I don't want to talk about that. 4-0 means absolutely nothing now. Win and move on - lose and go home. That's what matters. You can quote all the numbers you want to, but it would be a waste of good paper and ink - and more importantly - time. We will continue to take this thing one match at a time, stay focused, and stay calm. We have shown excellent teamwork and that will not change now.
Krytenia is what we are focusing on. We beat them in 8 ends last time, but they scored 5 rocks in ends 6-8. We had better be ready to handle what they will bring. You know they have us pegged for an upset. By The Way, isnt Myrtannia also 4-0? Go bug the hell out of them." |

Taking Care of Business - Myrtannia Crushes Iksonic; Advances to Semis!
Arena di ABNAmro in Notropalazzo, Atiganina, Pacitalia - It was the opening round of elimination matches tonight in the Atlantian Oceania Championship of Curling, featuring the top eight teams from the round robin stage. Only four teams would be left standing after these matches. Two of the teams went in undefeated: Dorian and Sonya in Group B, and Myrtannia from Group A.
Myrtannia entered the quarterfinals after nearly suffering an upset at the hands of the team that would be their first round opponent - Iksonic. Despite a late surge by Iksonic in the tenth end then, Myrtannia's defensive maneuvers kept it a Myrtannia lead and victory. After such a narrow match to close out the round robin stage unbeaten, Myrtannia was determined to not let Iksonic stay so close the second time around.
"This time, we wanted to show these guys we meant business. These are the matches that really count - win or go home, and in the opening round, the loser has no shot at that third place consolation prize. No chance for a trip to the podium for this round's losers. We want to be up there when all is said and done," Emilee Gliwski comented.
This time, Myrtannia's fans had a lot more to cheer about, which proved to be loud considering how many of them made their way to the stadium. With Sun Bursts defiantly waving in the stands, the sea of blue and orange would be sure to roar if their squad did well. If one thought they'd been loud before, they'd seen nothing yet. Even before the match, their chants of "Myr-tan-nia! Myr-tan-nia!" drowned out the PA announcer's preliminary announcements. As before, they all joined in as curler Rikki Falconeri sang the national anthem before the match over the public address system.
"It was nice of the officials to let me do that; it really got me jazzed for what followed," Falconeri told the multitude of reporters there to greet the victors after the match.
What followed that singing was nothing short of extraordinary by AOCOC standards. Not wanting to leave anything to chance, Myrtannia surged out of the gates and never looked back. In the opening end, they set a new AOCOC record for most rocks in a single end with four. With the fans already on their feet, the Myrtannian team struck hard again in the second with three, and yet another in the third. By the end of three, Myrtannia led 8-0.
"We were determined to make sure they wouldn't get into this match, and that's just what happened," Warner Mozley said.
Iksonic finally broke through with a rock scored in the fourth, and another in the fifth, but they were too far gone to be helped by these. Myrtannia completed the victory with a rock in each of the next three ends, which resulted in the match being called after eight ends. The shortest match in Myrtannia's AOCOC experience, and the biggest point differential/margin of victory as well.
Myrtannia's fans were on their feet from the start, and were louder than ever before in the round robin stage. This win really meant something, they felt, and showed it when the final tally of 11-2 was announced. Their team was moving on, and Iksonic thoroughly humbled and sent home with a 1-4 overall record. Some of the orange and blue clad fans started singing "Sha-na-na-na, sha-na-na-na, hey hey hey, goodbye!" as the Iksonic squad left the ice. Only a small margin, anyway. In addition, many signs bearing the Myrtannian teams unofficial motto of "Keep On Truckin'" appeared in the stands as well.
"We were ready for them this time, and we showed them why we're the top seed from Group A. From now on, nothing is left to chance. We all realize that one mistake could send us home, so we've beefed up practice to a new level, and we're resolved not to let that happen," skip Filiberto Luangxay stated firmly, "We're not out of the woods yet - two more matches before we can start partying. Right now, we're taking it one match at a time, one team at a time. Iksonic went down tonight, and we get Amarenthe next. For now, the only thing that will be on our minds is Amarenthe; they can stop our run short with a win, so we can't make mistakes on the ice. Now, we have to return to our regularly scheduled practice."
With that, the skip returned to the ice with his team, and they indeed resumed practiced, as focused as is humanly possible. Their next opponent will be Amarenthe, who swept past Legalese 9-6 in the quarterfinals. In the last meeting between the two, Myrtannia (5-0) defeated Amarenthe (3-2) by a final tally of 9-4. For the Group A championship, expect Amarenthe to put up a fierce fight. The winner will be guaranteed at least a silver medal, a prospect that has Myrtannian fans drooling. Then again, those fans are busy waiting outside the ticket office to buy seats for the match, so they'd be drooling outside if at all.
In other action, Bettia advanced past Spruitland 9-5, to reach the semifinals. Their opponent will be the top seed overall, the dominant squad from Dorian & Sonya, who advanced by soundly beating Milchama 8-3.

D&S Blast Into Semis!!!
Dorian and Sonya have seemed to be a step above the competition for much of this tourney. Today was no different. A misprint in the program had D&S listed to play Milchama in the quarters, but it was actually Krytennia who were present for the game. At least the seeding table and odds chart shows Krytenia.
Skip Omer Allegre and his crew seemed to be holding more of a practice than an actual match. Several ends saw them come away with no points as they tried new angles and tactics they might need next round. Two rocks scored in four different ends. The last two in the eighth signaled the end for Krytenia who had only score three rocks to that point and felt they could not overcome the difference.
"We tried some things out there that we never would have in a close match" said Allegre. "That's the advantage of knowing what you can do and when you can do it. Don't expect us to try that tomorrow. Bettia is just too tough."
The Semifinals bring a rematch of the opening match of the tourney. Dorian & Sonya vs Bettia. That match was very close as D&S won only on a mistake of a final shot by Bettia in the 10th end. We know better than to think we can cruise in this one. We have to stay sharp, know what will work, and stick to it. As a team we can win this one - but it takes all of us synced up. If we falter in anything, expect Bettia to be ready to pounce.
Other action
Bettia downed a disappointing Spruitland squad 9-5 and will push hard to take the match against D&S.
Amarenthe returned to early form as they moved past Legalese 9-6. They will give Myrtannia a good run for the win as well.
And now to Myrtannia. Undefeated and looking tough they easily handled Iksonic 11-2 in 8 ends. The first to ends of that match saw Myrtannia collect points from 7 -not a misprint - rocks.
The Finals should be a match of unbeatens between Myrtannia and Dorian and Sonya. Should be. Bettia and Amarenthe will both be looking to avenge losses earlier in the tourney and ruin the runs for both top seeds. This is a playoff and 1 bad game is all it takes to pack up and head for home empty-handed. |

Upset! Myrtannia Falls Apart Against Amarenthe
In a shocking upset, the previously unbeaten Myrtannia curling team fell to a resurgent Amarenthe squad on Sunday. Despite being favored to win the match and earn a shot at the gold medal, Myrtannia ran out of gas in the final half of the match, allowing Amarente to recover from a 3-6 defecit to win 8-7, outscoring the blue and orange 5-1 in the final ends. The raucous fans were silenced by an outstanding match by Amarenthe, but by the end had their cheers replaced by boos.
"We didn't want it to end this way," groaned Rikki Falconeri, "We had this match in our hands, and we let it slip away. Sweet Lord Bhudda we were so close..."
Those sentiments seemed to mirror those of the majority of the fans and the team. After a strong showing early on, Myrtannia couldn't do anything, and fell apart. A surprising run of victories ended with a stunning upset win that ensures Myrtannia will only finish third at best.
"I could say we're happy to make it this far, but we're not in the habit of lying to make up for mistakes. We're not satisfied at all. All that hard work, for what? A bronze medal? Bah!" obviously angry skip Filiberto Luangxay cursed, "We're going to take the night off, too. I don't think we can practice after this horrendous turn of events.."
In other action, Dorian and Sonya continued its own run, knocking off Bettia. One can be sure that Myrtannian fans will be cheering for D&S as they go up against Amarenthe, wanting revenge for the semifinals match. Myrtannia should have won the match, considering how decisively they beat Amarenthe last time. Maybe they were just too tired. Whatever the case, Myrtannia's curlers were not themselves, and at this rate, might not be again going into the consolation match against Bettia.
"I appalled that we lost... absolutely appalled," Warner Mozley, "The consolation of a bronze medal doesn't mean much now. We should've won, we had the match in our hands, and we let it slip away. The heck with thid!"

D&S Moves On To Finals!
The first ever AO Championship of Curling has been a very good tournament. And we are not saying that just because we are in the finals. Great matches, huge wins, and even larger upsets have happened. Great offensive explosions and sound defensive strategies have both been seen. it has been a great showcase for one of the world's lesser known sports.
From the very beginning four teams seem to stand out. Bettia, Amarenthe, Myrtannia, and Dorian and Sonya. And those four sides all reached the semifinals with and without challenges of our own. Amarenthe struggled through the later rounds of qualifying while Bettia overcame struggles in their first two matches to get here. Myrtannia and D&S both entered the semis fighting off the pressure that comes with being unbeaten - and handling it well. The shot at the finals seemed to be wide open.
Dorian and Sonya faced Bettia today in the second semi. On Matchday 1 the two sides had battled hard in a match that was not to be decided until the final rock of the 10th end. Both sides had that in mind as they prepared to play. Both sides were ready to fight for the right to be in the finals.
The match proved to be a defensive battle as neither team was willing to give up the big score. D&S slowly managed to pull out to a very hard-earned 5 rock lead in six ends. That sounds much more massive than it actually was. One solid end would bring Bettia right back into the match. But even as Bettia's defense worked well to keep D&S from scoring in the final four ends, their offense only produce one point in end number 9. The 10th end saw neither side score and D&S advanced to the finals with a grueling 5-1 victory.
"The match was much closer than the score would indicate" said Allegre following the match. "They did what they needed to for the most part and every point we got was the result of dedicated teamwork and more than a little luck. Several of the ends could have very well been Bettia's to take points from, but we put them in tough positions and they failed to capitalize on their chances. This is by far the hardest time we have had in scoring so far. Amarenthe will try to do the same thing."
Amarenthe advanced to the finals by what some saw as a huge upset over Myrtannia as they came back from 3 rocks down to pull out an 8-7 win.
Allegre commented on both sides: "Myrtannia looked tough. Undefeated at the semis is a huge accomplishment and we know just how much pressure goes with that. What people tend to forget is that Amarenthe was the team ranked #1 very early in the tourney. They struggled a bit, but seem to have regained their form. We will have a hard time if we want to beat them. They know how to hold a lead when they get it, and they also know how to come from behind. That makes them dangerous. So far we have not had to play from behind. It will be interesting to see how we respond if we are put in that position."
Teamwork is again the key. Every match thus far has been played by D&S one rock at a time with everyone on the same page. Win or Lose, that is the way we will finish this thing - as a team. |

Gold For D&S!!!!
Dorian and Sonya entered the finals of the first ever AO Championships of Curling as heavy favorites by most accounts. But Skip Omer Allegre knew that Amarenthe would prove tough to beat, and they proved just that early in the match.
D&S fans waited seemingly all day on the edge of their seats to see who would be crowned champions.

Allegre and the boys moved out to a 3 rock lead in the first three end of the match, only to see Amarenthe work their way back to even the match at 4 rocks each by the end of the 7th end. The 8th end saw no score, but D&S pulled back up by a single rock in the 9th.
The 10th end was where all the action took place. Niether side was willing to give in. Amarenthe played like champions but misplayed their final rock, allowing D&S to score 2 and emerge as the Gold Medal Winners.
"It was tough today." said Allegre. "A long day of decisions that had to be second and third guessed. Amarenthe gave us and the fans the match that everyone here wanted to see. We are fortunate enough to have won the Gold."
The Bronze Medal Match was a great one as well. Myrtannia failed to recover from their first loss of the tourney in the semis, and Bettia made them pay for that with a hard-earned 7-5 win. Both sides deserved the win, but it was Bettia that got it. Congrats to everyone who participated and we look forward to playing yet another tourney to decide curling's best. |

OOC - Thanks for hosting! It was nice to have a new sport show up besides AOCAF and AO Bowl. Adds a spice of variety to our lives in the inter regional sporting world.
I have noticed something, though - how is it that even with an RP bonus, I lost to two teams that never posted anything beyond team rosters? I'm not upset about it - I know it's a lot of luck involved in getting a win through scorination. Just curious. Sorry if it sounds self-serving, selfish, or self-righteous.
