To: Sarzonia President, Mike Sarzo
From: Xile President, Adonis Lauir

It is with great concern that I learn about the strained tensions relations of our two nations, and how these relationships were tested during my absence from affairs.  It is with greater concern that I note that my temporary replacement may have had some part in escalating these tensions.  Therefore, I would first like to apologize for any inconvenience or trouble that may have been caused during my prolonged hiatus.  I know that some things said or done may have been too abominable to ever be reconciled, but I hope we can now move past all of this.

The Sacrosanct Realm of Xile wishes to attempt to establish a better working relationship with your highly esteemed nation, and hope to be able to send a delegate to meet with yourself, or any member of your foreign relations staff and discuss any differences we may have.  We would also like to discuss further mutually beneficial agreements and concessions if you would like to hear of them.

I eagerly await your reply,

Adonis Lauir
President, The Sacrosanct Realm of Xile

Lauir ordered the message to be sent, and sat back in his chair broodingly. Karl had caused some problems, but he had managed to keep the nation in working order while Adonis was incarcerated. He hoped the request wouldn't be totally disregarded... even speaking to a lowly official initially was a sign of progress.

Official Statement, Office of External Affairs

The Incorporated States of Sarzonia is willing to discuss matters pertaining to the relations between her and Xile. To lay the groundwork for such talks, I'd like to ask you to go to the northern city of Portsmouth, where you will meet with Deputy Senior Vice President for External Affairs Grant Haffner. Should the talks progress in a positive fashion, we could then have further talks in either our capital, Woodstock or in Portland, our financial capital.

We commend Xile for taking this step toward smoothing over the longstanding strain in relations between our two countries. We hope this step becomes the first toward greater peace and prosperity within the region.

Mark Lorber
Senior Vice President for External Affairs
Incorporated States of Sarzonia

Adonis slapped his forehead as he re-read his official transmission to President Sarzo. "Strained tensions relations? What was I thinking..."

He pressed the intercom on his desk and called in to the reception room, where his guest had been waiting. The doors opened, and Marc Landon strolled casually into the office.

"Marc, it is good to see you. I'm going to be sending you to Sarzonia soon, and I trust you have looked over all the documents?"

Marc patted his briefcase and nodded. "It's all here, sir, and I've read each document at least ten times."

Adonis thought about laughing. Marc was always meticulous when it came to learning his newest diplomatic role. The man was probably serious, so the president continued.

"Alright. I want you to get into contact with Sarzonia and tell them when they can expect you. Serve your country honorably, son."

Marc walked out of the room.

serve your country honorably, son? i've never been good with closings... oh well...

Adonis leaned back into his chair and stared out the window.

Marc continued his walk to the communications den of the palace sent his message.

Haffner awoke from his slumber on the high-speed train from Woodstock up to Portsmouth.

"Damn it, I wanted to see the new Naval Academy," he said out loud. Wish I hadn't slept through it, he thought with slight annoyance.

"Last stop, Penn Station in Portsmouth. Please check to make sure you have secured all items. Thank you for riding SarzTram. Have a great day," the announcement said. Haffner checked and made sure he had his briefcase and his laptop with him as his aide grabbed their suitcases.

After the two men picked up their rental car and drove to the Portsmouth Hilton, they checked into their room and the aide immediately turned around to go.

"I'm going to go pick up a Marc Landon at the airport."

"Already?"

"The meeting's supposed to be in an hour. His flight lands in ten minutes."

"Wish someone had told me these things."

"I sent you an e-mail, left you a voice mail, and handed you the agenda. It's all in there."

"-explicitive removed-. Sorry. Uh, good luck."

"Thanks. I'll need it with that traffic on the Parkway."

The aide walked briskly toward the car to pick Landon up and start a meeting no one in the office of External Affairs thought would ever come to pass. Not with the FLMS again making overtures to Sarzonia to join. Not with Xile and Sarzonia repeatedly on the cusp of verbal warfare. Not with a football rivalry that replaced simple sporting competition with icy stares.

Haffner sat on his bed and turned on the tele. He flipped through the channels looking for SNN, but they were discussing the World Cup final Sarzonia's national team was getting ready to play against Oaker.

Damn it, where's the news when you need it, Haffner thought as he lifted the remote, turned off the tele, then drifted back onto his bed and into a brief, but very deep sleep.
