The United Kingdom of Carpathia and Ruthenia

A Brief History

Before the Act of the Union in 1703, the Kingdoms of Carpathia and Ruthenia were separate nations but with a long history of friendship. The Kingdom of Carpathia was located along the coastal region and traces it's origin to Roman/Italian settlers circa 40 AD. The Kingdom of Ruthenia was located in the mountainous northern regions and recent DNA studies show there origins came genetically from central Europe where modern day Hungary would be found.

Following the Act of the Union the two already close countries merged together quite well, with little nationalist animosity to any loss of national identity. With the royal families of the two countries now one the new country rallied around them as the new Carpa-Ruthenian royal family formed the first parliament moving the new country into a Constitutional monarchy which is in place to this day.

Carpathia and Ruthenia is probably most famous for it's cuisine. Ingredients and dishes vary by region. There are many significant regional dishes that have become both national and regional. Many dishes that were once regional, however, have proliferated in different variations across the country in the present day. Cheese and wine are also a major part of the cuisine, playing different roles both regionally and nationally with their many variations.

The Government is led by the Prime Minister, who selects all the remaining Ministers. The Prime Minister and the other most senior Ministers belong to the supreme decision-making committee, known as the Cabinet.

Under the Carpathian-Ruthenian constitution, executive authority lies with the monarch; however, in current practice, this authority is exercised only by, or on the advice of, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The Cabinet members advise the monarch as members of the Privy Council. They also exercise power directly as leaders of the Government Departments.

The Government Ministers are usually all members of Parliament, and are accountable to it. The Government is dependent on Parliament to make primary legislation, which means that in practice a government must seek re-election at least every five years. The monarch selects the Prime Minister as the leader of the party most likely to command a majority in Parliament.

The current Prime Minister is Lanzo Adamoli, leader of the Conservative Party, who was appointed by Queen Olivia II on 5th May 2038.

The national languages are Carpathian and Ruthenian, in practice both are spoken by the majority of the population which regional variations (There are a higher number of only Ruthenian speakers in the northern regions). English is rapidly growning in usage but mostly in the major cities.

With the majority of the population speaking both Carpathian and Ruthenian many linguists have noticed a trend that the majority of new words and slang to be derived from both languages, leading some to theorize that a new language with emerge over the course of the next hundred or so years that will be a merger of the two.
