Government

Official Name: The Despotate of Borsola
  • In Romanian: Despotatul Borsola

Government Type: Benevolent oligarchic dictatorship

Capital City: Estase
  • Largest City: Traian

Administrative divisions:
  • First tier: Peripheries, or Periferiile (sing. Periferie). 27 total.
  • Second tier: Counties, or Judeţe (sing. Judeţe). 223 total, averaging 8.259 per province.
  • Third tier: Municipalities, or Municipalităţi (sing. Municipalitate). 1735 total, averaging 7.78 per county and 64.255 per periphery.

Independence day: September 13, 1945 (liberation from Nazi rule; existed as a monarchy from January 8, 1865 to September 3, 1937.)

Legal system: Wholly civil law.

Suffrage: There is no voting. But we'll substitute that with the fact that you can become a Party member at age 20, having served your two years in the armed forces.

Heads of state and government: Governors-General Anton X and Ioana Melinte

Legislative branch: National Congress of the Despotate
  • In Romanian: Congres Naţional de Despotatul
  • Unlike legislatures in many dictatorships, the body is not a rubber-stamp legislature; instead, the body actually makes decisions concerning internal affairs, while leaving foreign affairs, economics, and defense to the Governors-General and their Cabinet of Ministers.
  • There are 223 members, one for every county. They are appointed by the Presidents of each county for three-year terms.

Judicial branch: Supreme Tribunal of the Despotate
  • In Romanian: Tribunalul Suprem din Despotatul
  • The job of the Tribunal is to impeach officials deemed worthy of such a fate by the Governors-General, to resolve matters regarding the Constitution, and to try criminal proceedings involving treason of some sort.
  • The Tribunal is not a puppet of the government; they are independent of the executive and legislative branches and is known to oppose the side of the government every so often.
  • There are 27 members, one for every periphery. Each one is appointed by Anton X for life terms.

Political parties: The National Party, the only party that will ever hold the majority under the current system. Every cycle, one-third of the counties are directed to appoint members of a collective Official Opposition (plenty of factions opposed to the National Party) to get their ideas on issues.

The pimped-out History section:

History of Borsola

Kingdom of Borsola (Regatul Borsola)

Founded on January 8, 1865 after gaining independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kingdom of Borsola wasn't really too big of a deal at the time. It wasn't markedly different from its neighboring monarchies, aside from the fact that it had a burgeoning pony population and outlived most of its neighbors. The House Amanar came and went with its various monarchs.

Speaking of ponies, the government sanctioned either "forced relocation" out-of-borders or outride genocide of the little animals from 1922 to 1934 under the rule of Damian II, a sniveling little rat-faced git with a penchant for animal cruelty and the torture of humans. Named the Elephantine Wars (because of Damian's strong, ahem... fondness of elephants and the fact the ponies often fought back with militias), it killed off a good amount of the population.

After Damian's (possibly accidental) death, Nicholas Amanor took over as King. He stopped the Wars, made peace with the ponies, and all was right with the world. However, he was an incredible p*ssy on the global scale (pardon my French), and on September 3, 1937, he had Borsola become a client state of Adolf Hitler's growing Third German Reich. Of course, Hitler and his Nazis started up the taunting (naturally followed by genocide) again, and wiped out nearly 90% of the already endangered pony species. After the war, they never came back.

Founding the Despotate

On September 13, 1945 (with the help of the Soviet Union and a few years after the people, with the support of the Nazis, executed Nicholas and the rest of the royal family by breaking wheel in a bizarre twist), German soldiers officially left the country; they had aided for "reconstruction". Said reconstruction included attempting to install a dictatorship with the help of the Soviets; however, local Borsolans named Stanislav Floca and Nicholas Sabau took note.

They founded the National Party, which overthrew the puppet government of the Soviets in a quick and mostly bloodless coup d'état. Then, with the help of many people of opposing ideologies, founded the Despotate as "an oligarchic dictatorship with plentiful civil rights and a system of checks and balances." The Party and the opposition have helped keep the system this way for the past 66 years.

However, sometime in 1997, magical powers (or so we're guessing) lifted the nation and its inhabitants from Earth and into the world of Nationstates. They found themselves in the South Pacific, where they remained for 14 years until finding Atlantian Oceania and moving there. [/yourheadasplodefromstupidity]

History of Governors-General

Governor-General of the Western Peripheries
  • 1946-1978: Stanislav Floca. The more dominating personality of the two Founders, it was him that proposed the idea of a meritocracy, and also he wrote the anti-fascist and anti-communist manifesto the National Party, despite pressure from Russia.
  • 1978-1997: Henric Biaram. Equally as well-liked as his predecessor, he was known for his refusal to give in to the Soviet bloc in the 80's.
  • 1997-present: Anton X (real name Anton Vladimirescu.) Known for his ideas on the handling of the whole planet-shifting affair and his willingness to compensate the pony population for the genocides committed by the old Kingdom, which before had been a taboo subject.

Governor-General of the Eastern Peripheries
  • 1946-1960: Nicholas Sabau. Largely responsible for shaping the Despotate as it is, the "meritocracy with respect for human rights". He also introduced the idea of allowing opposition to the Party, and a system of checks and balances; he personally reprimanded corrupt government officials until his death.
  • 1960-1982: Liviu Noica. Known for being not very charismatic and generally a hard person to get along with, and also nearly tore the government apart due to divergent opinions of his poor handling of the 1965 attempted coup d'état by Russian-backed communists.
  • 1982-present: Ioana Melinte. The second-longest serving Governor-General, she shows no signs of stopping soon. Is known for generally taking the side of the opposition on several issues, whereas all other Governors-General were generally even. First woman appointed as Governor-General.
