Centuries ago, the archipelago -- now known as The Saints' Isles -- was discovered by a small fleet of sailors led astray by miscalculation. The "Saints' fleet", as they were known, sailed from the region of Normandy in Northern France with 4 ships: The Saint Marie, The Saint Francis, The Saint Germaine, and The Saint Goneri. Dissatisfied with French rule, and discrimination of their Breton decent, The Saints' Fleet began to settle the Isles under the Church, rather than the French flag. Gradually, ships of dissatisfied Normans and Bretons began to pour into the port of Mariana in order to claim sovereignty upon the uninhabited isles. For 200 years, each Isle exercised complete sovereignty, until uniting under King Tyrus of Mariana upon discovery of gold on the main Isle of Saint Jean-Baptiste. Though the Isles remain under the Crown of Mariana, each Isle remains autonomous.
The Saints' Isles rely heavily on trade with each other, considering that each isle has developed and discovered systems of agriculture and mining unique to their own. The port of Mariana, which serves as the Crown Seat of the Kingdom, thrives with open trade throughout the region, free of tariffs.
The Saints' Isles retain no standing ground Infantry of sorts, though each young male is conscripted into the expansive Royal Navy upon turning 17. And, due to topography, each Royal subject begins to learn to sail as soon as possible. Defense of the Isles relies heavily upon naval power, with very little defensive infrastructure.
