The Republic of Stafnea is small social-democratic republic. Its economy is a mix of nationalized industry, worker-run companies, and private enterprise. The current government is a center-left coalition of the Socialist Workers Party and the Unity Socialist Party. Its current Prime Minister is Dilan Kol.

Geography
Mountains span the north of the country, across northern Guadanel, Ezella, and Bisqutel, and parts of the southeast, making the eastern interior a low basin with many rivers. Many of the major inland cities lie in this central basin. The rockier west is penetrated by the smaller Sarzon River valley.

Stafnea is divided into six semi-autonomous regions: Ezella, Guadanel, Sodella, Bisqutel, Tamvel, and Karbada.

History
Bellario Stafne united the bickering fiefdoms of Guadanel, Sodella, and Ezella in 1710, and later incorporated Tamvel and the city-states of what is now Bisqutel within two decades. Absolute monarchy lasted until the Liberal Revolution in 1860, which removed much of the power of the king and instituted a parliamentary system. The Liberal Era lasted until 1899, when the region erupted in war. A military coup deposed the king, won the territory of Karbada and the Chetl Islands, and returned all power to Parliament in 1901 after the war had ended.

This ushered in the Republican Era. Industry, labor unionism, and social liberalism flourished until 1931, when a social conservative backlash, economic depression, and a weak prime minister led to a conservative takeover by MP Margo Silio. Parliament was suspended, a puppet monarch was installed, and Silio ran the country.

Democratic and labor opposition to the Silio regime led to Civil War in 1935. The civil war was won by the left, led by the Communists, who went about creating a "workers' republic" under the leadership of Helini Parmo. In 1941, Vras Devon became Chairman of the Communist Party, purged opposition on the right and the left, and became dictator for three decades. Devon was finally overthrown by the Democratic Revolution in 1973, and multiparty elections were held in the next year.

The year 1980 brought the first democratic transition of power between parties in over half a century, ushering in the modern era.

Homeland defense is provided mainly by Regional Militias, although there is a small volunteer National Army. Most ships in its modest Navy are relics from the Communist era, as are its few fighter jets.
