With intelligence reports of a threat by Bedistan on the two islands immediately west of Sarzonia's landmass, the Incorporated Sarzonian Military has announced that it will begin the construction of bases on both islands.
"We can not allow a massive country such as Bedistan to encroach on Sarzonian territory unchecked," Vice President for Defence John Newman said in a prepared statement released by the Department of Defence from its headquarters in Saugerties. "In addition, with the situation in Xile becoming increasingly unstable, our defence needs to be ready for anything."
The Navy has also announced that several squadrons will begin "routine" patrols of the area surrounding the islands. Vice President for Naval Operations Kathy Bunhall said the squadrons will remain in Sarzonian or international waters and will not encroach on soverign waters without permission.
"It's really a show-the-flag measure," Bunhall said. "It's letting our region mates know that we're keeping an eye on things." |

"We've been bumped to third-largest Naval power in the Region," Lord Orfosi said, "you do realise this, my lord?"
Lord-Protector Tiberius Starblayde leaned back in his chair, waiting for his volatile Defence Minister to calm down. Starblayde weighed over the situation in his mind. Two globally-recognised Naval Powers now plying the waters of Atlantian Oceania, leaving the Starblaydi Navy fighting to be 'best of the rest' in the region.
"Do you think we should send the Tiberius and its Battlegroup on a tour of the region, Carlito? To make sure that purple is the dominant colour of our seas?"
Tiberius both loved and hated the fact that Starblaydia's prime weapon to project power in the region was named specifically after him.
"Certainly, my Lord."
"Take the appropriate measures, then." Tiberius waved him away. "Oh, Carlito, don't forget to stay outside Vilita's No-Battleship zone."
Lord Carlito Orfosi laughed and left the room. |

After being briefed by his new Intelligence Minister (hired to replace the incompetent Glenn North) about Sarzonia's sudden protection of its western islands, Bedistani president Dean Willis got on the phone to Defense Minister Roger Burns, still in Lamoni.
"Roger, have you heard about the news in Sarzonia?"
"No, I've been sitting at this table in Lamoni for months now. What are the Sarzos up to?"
"They're constructing military bases on their two western islands."
"And this concerns me how?"
"They say they're doing it because intelligence reported a Bedistani threat on those islands. Any idea what that's about?"
"Not a clue. Fabricated story?"
"Either that or they grossly misinterpreted our land claims from a couple years back. Yeah, we had our eyes on two islands, but they're closer to Cockbill Street and Crystilakere than they are to Sarzonia. Must've had an intelligence chief like North."
"Heh, yeah. So what should be done, Mr. President?"
"Well, we certainly shouldn't sit on our asses. In this region we've actually got to be prepared defensively. Start boosting defenses on the east coast. And the west coast too, while you're at it - Xile's over there and we cannot be leaving that unguarded."
"You got it." |

Sattelite reports were laid out before interim-president Karl Tiresen.
"It appears as if Bedistan is preparing for war. Perhaps an attempt to flaunt the power of our rival alliance?"
He stood there for a moment.
"I want you to begin the build up of troops on the east coast. Prepare a few coastal batteries in case we get problems in the water."
Tiresen looked warily at the photographs again as an aide scrambled off to follow orders. |

"Yes, General Pironi?" Warzycha clocked the General's expression. He knew this week had been too good.
"Looks like the Xileans are heading up some forces on their coast, sir."
"Oh yippee. We take their leader, and now they're annoyed. Never saw this coming." Warzycha suppressed a giggle.
"That's just it sir. Their mobilising toward the north. It looks like they're leaving us alone and responding to the Bedistani garrisons."
"Hmm...now that is a pickle. Go to Amber, keep an eye on the situation, and let me know of any developments. Don't deploy any troops to the coastal garrisons yet though." |

In a conference room in Lamoni...
As the delegate from Latao spoke at the FLMS meeting, Roger Burns' cellphone went off again. What is it now? he muttered under his breath. "Excuse me." Burns took his leave from the table and answered it. "Mr. President, I'm kinda busy..."
"What the hell have you done, Roger?"
"Excuse me?"
"The Xileans. They seem to think we're about to go to war. You know, because of your little defensive buildup on the west coast?"
"You told me to do that, sir."
"But you should've had the brain power to figure out that anything drastic was gonna get them going. They've already got an itchy trigger finger after the Kryties took their leader."
"We had a skeleton force there! If I'd left it as it was, the Xileans might not have given any warning at all and just marched right in. Besides, with them over there, the nuke-happy Abattoirians to the north, and a bunch of land-hungry terrorists to the south, wouldn't it be kinda stupid NOT to have that area guarded in some way?"
"Well, you'd better think of something fast before the whole damn region goes to war." And with that, the President hung up. |
