Repeal "Fight the Axis of Evil"

A proposal to repeal a previously passed resolution

Category: Repeal
Resolution: #1
Proposed by: New Western America

Description: UN Resolution #1: Fight the Axis of Evil (Category: International Security; Strength: Strong) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: While there is much fear surrounding the issue of global terrorism, the answer is most definitely not for UN members to build massive numbers of weapons.

Four reasons:

Member nations should not be forced to have a large military budget, especially when so many are struggling to pay for domestic costs like healthcare and education.

The "Axis of Evil" could be use to label any country as an excuse for other countries to invade.

Terrorist organizations are just that, organizations, not armies, and therefore large forces are not necessary to eliminate them.

Finally, massive mobilization of troops and building of weapons only serves to bring about fear in the minds of the people.

The best way to combat global terrorism is through intelligence; perhaps a new resolution regarding this should be brought to the floor.

I don't believe that the UN has any authority to tell member nations how much that they must spend on defense.

However, if I remember correctly, the original resolution FORCED all member nations to massively increase their military budget. A peace-loving nation like ourselves shouldn't have to spend huge amounts of money on a division of government that will never be put into use.

Therefore, we will be voting FOR the repeal.

Never be put to use until fundamentalist religious-minded terrorists decide to wipe you from the face of the earth.

Starblaydia is against repealing this resolution.

Abattoir will be voting against this resolution. Even if a country is expected to spend a certain amount on their military, it will be for a better good.

The fact remains that the UN shouldn't have the right to force governments to spend money on select districts. We know the risks of having a low military budget; we believe our risk of terrorist attack to be very low.

This resolution does not affect any part of your government, except that it increases your freedom to make budgetary decisions of your own free will, and not have to submit to some worldwide regulation that may not even apply to your country.

It's fine with us if the other, more 'aggressive' nations want to spend 25% of their budget on their military, but we'd rather have the freedom not to waste money defending ourselves from a threat that is simply not of the same magnitude.

The whaling resolutions, health resolutions, basic welfare resolutions... all of these force you to spend money where you may not want to. Resolutions that require you to use a 'safer' ship when you transport oil. This is taking money away from certain areas and forcing you to put it in other places. It is no different than this.

Xile's hit in on the nose. What the UN tells you to do is spend money in certain areas to make sure things do or don't happen. Spending money on Epidemic Control Centres, money on shutting down whale hunters, money on promoting equal rights, money on halting terrorism... wait. Hold on a sec! All these resolutions make me spend money!

Fighting the Axis of Evil is no different.
