AO Regional Hockey Championships

There Will be Two Groups of 5 Teams. All Matches will 'take place' in Vilita, so there is no Home/Away advantage (except I guess for Vilita, in character). Each Team will play each other once (4 matches). (Teams will be awarded 2 Pts. For a Win, and 1 Point for a draw. Matches that are tied after 60 minutes will continue with a 5 minute Sudden-Death overtime session. If one team were to score, they would attain a win and an additional point, while the opponents would receive an Overtime Loss.) At the end of 5 Matchdays, the top team in the table will advance straight to the Semi Finals, while the 2nd & 3rd placed teams will square off in a Quarter Final Playoff. The matches will be one off Knockouts, with the team with the highest record facing the team with the lowest record, then the two middle teams. If matches are even after the three 20-minute periods, additional periods will be played in similar 20 minute intervals of Sudden-Death overtime. Quarter Final winners advance to the Semis, Semi Final Winners to the Final, and Semi Final Losers to the Third Placed Playoff.

Matches will start on SATURDAY JANUARY 22, and proceed every other day for 5 Matchdays (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday). Scores will be posted in THIS POST, down below where the group Schedules are. This will be done to save RP space in the thread. On the morning of Matchday, the two Group Schedules will be updated, with the "v." being replaced by "[#]-[#]", The Number on the Left being the goals scored by the team on the left, the number on the right being the goals scored by the team on the right. Obviously, the team with the most goals wins, and gets 2 points. The team with the least goals gets 0 points, with the exception of an Overtime Loss (1pt). If both have the same, then its a tie, both get 1 point. I will also edit the topic description to say "Matchday 1 Posted" or whatever Matchday is Posted, when it is Posted. Currently it says "Pre-Tournament RP's".

Important:: RP Bonus

As always, there will be an RP Bonus to reward those who participate in the competition by giving them a slightly improved overall chance of winning. However, unlike any previous event, you will no longer be guaranteed short-term improvement with your RP's. The RP Bonus will be regulated from match to match, making it so that on any given matchday, any team will be able to have an RP Bonus greater than or equal to that of their opponents. There is no longer a guarantee that your calculated RP Bonus in a single match will be greater than your opponents simply because you have RP Credit.* Please take this into consideration when planning your RP's for this tournament, and do not get stuck in the mindset that you will be at a disadvantage if your opponent posts more RP than you. Again, RPing will still improve your overall chance of winning, but RP Credit can no longer be associated with your actual calculated RP Bonus for a match-by-match comparison between two teams.

*RP Credit = The Traditional 'RP Bonus', It is a number that rates the quality of your RP Contibution to the cup
*RP Bonus = The Fraction of your RP Credit that is inserted into the formula to improve your chance of winning. This number can be any number between 0, and the number of your RP Credit

----------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------

Teams that have participated in the Don Cherry cup of hockey will have a higher base scorination rank than teams that have not. Please post your rosters in this thread as well. All Group 1 matches will be played in Yeaddin, Vilita. All Group 2 matches will take place in Alikki-Corra, Vilita

Blizzards hope to make regional noise

The still new Sarzonian ice hockey team scanned the videotapes of each opponent in the Atlantian Oceania regional hockey championships that fielded a team prior to this new tournament. The team knew it had experience with Vilita's Ice Cats and was familiar with the exploits of the Starblaydi team that won Cherry Cup glory, but other teams were less than familiar.

"It's going to be a pretty new situation for us," Coach Harold Clark said. "We've been the new team before but now it's time for us to be sort of veterans and hope our experience holds up."

The Blizzards have a record of 6-6-6 overall, including one hockey game played in the failed attempt to have a Winter Games in northern neighbor Chacor. The team earned a reputation for playing hard and usually playing tight defense in its first appearance in the Cherry Cup but fell short of qualifying even though four out of six teams from each group advanced to the knockout rounds.

Right winger Mike Ridley is the team's top goal scorer in international play, while Brian Snow has been the starter in goal for 14 of the team's 18 games. Tim Collins has become a capable backup despite limited experience.

"We have a chance to do something in this tournament, but a lot remains to be seen," Clark said. "Our future begins now."

Hawks hope to make waves in regional hockey championships

For the first time, Lamoni has entered the world of international hockey. Will the Hawks be able to win against such hockey titans as Starblaydia? We don't know, but it should be entertaining to watch. This new Lamoni team will have a lot to prove, carrying the hopes of a warring nation on their backs, especially with all of the losses that the WC team is experiencing. Tim Wayne, a former collegiate hockey coach for the Nephi Tigers will be coaching the team, and hopefully have a good time of it.

SO Shock Turori In Ice-Breaker

In SO's first ever ice hockey tournament, little, if anything, was expected of the ice fledglings. However, after a magically cold evening, the former Georgian Republic stole the 2 points from veterans Turori (who got 1 point), winning 5-4 in overtime.

Turori took the early advantage, making the lack of experience on the SO team's part show, scoring twice early on. A minor reprieve saw SO get one back before Turori extended their lead to 4-1. At this point, the SO team got their skates on (a crude pun, I know) and scored twice in quick succession, catching the Turori players napping in defence. Another shot snuck in in the dying seconds of normal time to take the match into overtime, the score being 4-4. As time dragged on, the SO was seemingly stuck in defence mode, the puck not leaving their half for a period of five minutes. Just then, a stray shot was collected by an SO player, who carried it up the rink and, in a way good enough for slow-motion filming, shot between the keeper's legs to end the game 5-4 to the SO.

This shock win will surely be followed by a heavy defeat, as they meet Turori's big brother, Vilita on Day Two. The Vilitans won 5-0 in their first match against Fmjphoenix, and a similar spanking is expected tomorow.

Ice Cats outclass rookies from the South
Now Face South, the team from the North.

The Vilitan Ice Cats made a strong showing in their opening match of the first Atlantian Oceania Ice Hockey Championships. The hosts entertained Fmjphoenix, a nation with little previous experience in the sport, and easily disposed of their regional counterparts by a 5-2 scoreline. Mike Kater of the Yeaddin Squirrels started in goal for the Vilitan's, and Fmjphoenix would not figure out how to beat the young brother of Soccer-Star Jimmy Kater at full strength. Vilita scored twice in the opening period, before Fmjphoenix got one back on a power play to open the second period. Vilita netted once more to take a 3-1 lead to the 3rd period, and finished off the game with 2 quick goals. Fmjphoenix got a 2nd with 3 minutes to play on a 5 on 3 powerplay, and should be proud of their performance. Vilita now entertain South Osettia, from Northern Atlantian Oceania, and will expect a similar result to keep their spot atop the table.

Loss leaves Clark, Blizzards fuming

With a loss to the Crystils football team in World Cup 19 still fresh on their minds, Sarzonian supporters who made the trip to Alikki-Corra to watch their team take on southern neighbors Crystilakere were hoping the Blizzards could bring a small sense of revenge to the table.

Unfortunately, goalie Brian Snow was not sharp, allowing all four Crystils goals on 17 shots before getting pulled in favor of goalie Tim Collins en route to a 4-2 loss. Coach Howard Clark refused to speak to media until well after the locker room had been cleared of players.

"We should have done much better," Clark said, his voice rising with rage as he spoke. "We just wiped the floor with Squornshelous in the Cherry Cup for God's sake! We should be 2-0 right now."

As it is, the Blizzards are 1-1 with a game against undefeated northern neighbors Chacor coming up. Clark said the team would work on "all phases" of the game after their defense failed them in the Crystilakere loss.

"We need to get it all going, power play, penalty kills, faceoffs, you name it, we need to get better at it," Clark said. "It's sickening that we're in this position right now."

The Sarzonia Blizzards

Coach: Harold Clark

ROSTER (starters in bold):
1 Brian Snow (Portsmouth Pride): At 6'2, 185, not the most agile goalkeeper around. Uses size and positioning to cut down most goalscoring chances. Decent puck handler. 22 years old.
30 Tim Collins (Saugerties Storm): This 27 year old just took up hockey three years ago, so Snow is the more experienced keeper. Is poor at puckhandling. At 5'9, 165, uses the butterfly style and his agility to stop shots.

DEFENSEMEN:
2 Bill Langham (Woodstock Seawolves): Team captain. This 29 year old has the most hockey experience of any Blizzards player. Has the best plus-minus in the history of Woodstock City College (plus-32). Known more for savvy than speed, but he's a very hard hitter.
4 Kevin Dewey (Nicksia Hawks): Known as a great offensive defenseman. Led his amateur league in goals by a defenseman with 12 in 30 games. 25 years old.
10 Brandon Yancey (Portland Pirates): The fastest defender in Sarzonia, he sometimes takes his ability to chase the play from behind for granted and doesn't position well enough for Coach Clark. 23 years old.
12 Ben Johansson (New Isselmere University, New Daurmont): Rugged defenseman known for taking his share of penalties. Has the skill to handle the puck and jump into the attack if needed, but usually is a stay-at-home defenseman. 24 years old.
14 Connor Burleson (Wilmington Whiteheads): The hardest hitting defenseman on the team, most of this 26 year old's checks are clean. Able to deal a bone jarring hip check. Not the best at puckhandling so he's a stay-at-home defenseman.
15 Dave Miller (Portsmouth Pride: Aggressive, attacking defender often skates with the fourth line. Led the team in penalty minutes during the team's exhibition tour through Sarzonia. At 30 years old, he's the oldest player on the team.

FORWARDS:
11 Jeff Cantnell (Woodstock): This left winger has one of the deadliest shots among a left-shooting wing in Sarzonia. He led the Seawolves in goals with 29, six more than his age this year.
16 Marc Coulier (Carthage Crush): Led the team in faceoff win percentage last year (61 percent). Does especially well in clutch faceoffs, so he'll be the first line center. 28 years old.
17 Mike Ridley (Lexington Lasers): The top goal scorer in his amateur league with 28 in 30 games, this 27 year old right winger is the best all-around player Sarzonia has.
19 John Davis (Lexington): Rugged right winger usually defends against the opposing team's top offensive forwards. Is excellent at getting under the skin of some of the greatest players on opposing teams. 22 years old.
20 Kevin Spencer (Galveston College): Can play both center and left wing. Usually decent on face offs, but he's best known for being a tough defensive forward. 29 years old.
22 Albert Cronin (Carthage): Utility forward, can play all three forward positions, but is best at left wing. Improving on defense, but is often sitting on the player's bench in the third period. 25 years old.
23 Steve Becker (Woodstock): For a fourth line center who is among the leaders in penalty minutes, has a deft touch around the goal. If he keeps his hands to himself instead of beating on his opponents, he could be a leading scorer. 24 years old.
24 Kelly Miller (Portland): Arguably the hardest working player in Sarzonia, this 28 year old right winger goes full-tilt on every shift like his family's honor depended on it. His scrappy play has endeared him to his teammates everywhere he's gone. Will dig in the corners and deliver brutal checks on opposing forwards when he has to. The alternate captain.
27 Billy May (Nicksia): Despite his size (5'8, 145 pounds), the toughest fighter on the Sarzonian team. He'll engage anyone anywhere, anytime. Next to no skill with the puck, so when he's on the ice, he's out there to pick a fight. "Plays" left wing. He just turned 26.
32 Casey Matthews (Newcastle University): At 6'3, 205 pounds, he's easily the biggest player on the ice for the Blizzards. Despite his physical presence, this 25 year old has a surprisingly good touch when he plays center, but he's well-known for being ambidextrous. Not very good with faceoffs, however.
36 Harvey Benedict (University of Montgomery): If your enforcer has been given a game misconduct, he'll pick up the slack as a right wing. If you have to use him for anything else, he'll do well with his defensive assignments and distract the opposing defense when he has the puck. Other than that, there's not much else this 29 year old is good for.
44 Casey Russell (Henley State College): The younger brother of Sarzonian football star Darwin Russell, he has the hockey equivalent of his brother's skills, but at 20 years old, it'll be a while before he plays center with the starting unit.

Chacor lead standings

In what has come as a surprise to many Chacor lead the Group 2 standings in AOH1. Very few gave the national team any credit, but they seem to have proven their critics wrong with two solid performances.

Right Wing Youssef Moduri has been instrumental, with three assists in the match against ex-Cherry Cup champions Starblaydia. Moduri also grabbed a goal on Matchday 1 in a 2-1 win over Crystilakere.

SO Still In With A Shout

In what is their first ever ice hockey experience, South Osettia are surprise leaders of Group A after three games, having beaten seasoned veterans Turori and fellow newcomers Fmjphoenix. The two victories sandwich a 3-1 defeat to Vilita, but already the country's prospective hockey future is looking good. A win against Cockbill Street in the team's final match will guarantee their progression, but with Vilita playing Turori, it is yet uncertain where in the group they will finish. Fmjphoenix are already eliminated, having lost all three games so far. The other four teams are separated by just one point, but all teams have a game in hand on SO, which may work against them if they don't beat Cockbill Street.

With SO doing so well, talk has obviously turned to how far the team can go in this competition. We however are staying neutral, an are not going to guess where they will finish. We wish the players the best of luck in Vilita, and hope they can continue to make this hockey debut an ice show.

Hawks defeat Starblaydia, stun region

In an amazingly close hockey game, the Lamoni Hawks defeated regional favorites Starblaydia 3-2 in overtime. Who is on this mystery team? Well, we frankly don't yet know, as there has been no roster posted as yet. Whoever they are, they are showing that Lamoni can take on the regional best and win.

As for a prediction of how the Hawks will do in this first regional tournament, we shall remain neutral, as we really don't know how they are going to fare. The team is made up of collegiate hockey teams (and probably will be made up of them) until the government approves the creation of a professional hockey league. With the war on, that is not likely to happen for a while.

Delays, delays, delays...

The world of ice hockey is on the edge of its seat, and has been for almost three days now, as the AO Ice Hockey Championshps have been put on ice. Ironically, bad weather in the form of snow, has meant that the outdoor rinks have been completely unusable for several days now. A spokesperson from Vilita gave the following statement early yesterday:

"Due to freak weather conditions, the AOCAF Hockey Championships have been halted. We are experiencing some difficulties in shifting the snow, and apologise for any inconvenience caused by the delays. We should be able to continue the tournament tomorrow, pending no further inproprieties."

South Osettia need a win over Cockbill Street to guarantee their progress to the next round, otherwise they need other results to go their way.

Hawks defeat Crystilakere, jump to second place in group

Lamoni added another win to it's collection in the regional hockey tournament with one over Crystilakere. The next match for the Hawks will be against group champions Chacor, in what will be a good match to watch.

With their second place ranking, the Hawks will be in the knockouts, if they can stay there, or move up to first place by defeating Chacor.

This group of mystery men has given Lamonian collegiate hockey a good name, and an actuall roster may be forthcoming sooner than you might think. We shall all be waiting in anticipation (not) for it.

Fmjphoenix Ice get stomped flat 3 games in a row, hope to salvage win against Turori

Fmjphoenix's national hockey team was rolled out and flatened on the ice three straight games to the scores of 5-2, 4-1, 3-1. They are 0-3 and have yet to win a match. THey hope to win big over Turori and at least finish in 4th place instead of last. More to come later when the newspaper gets more info from the team.

SO Shock As Ice Fledglings Progress to SFs

Everyone involved expected this to be a short trip to Vilita followed by a few thrashings before a disappointed team returned home. It has, however, turned into a tale of magnanimous proportions, as a team that had never played together before its first game in this tournament top a group containing ice veterans Vilita and Turori.

Having played all their games, South Osettia sat top of their group with Vilita level on points. They were expected to beat Cockbill Street and thus knock SO down to second, forcing them into the QFs. Naturally, all eyes were on the Vilita match this evening, and in an abnormal game, Vilita came out the worse of the two teams, losing 2-1 and thus being denied 1st place in the group. All this meant that, by default, the rookies from the North took the top spot, and reserved their place in the final four, something which most South Osettians would never have thought possible at the beginning of the tournament.

The coach put it down to their first game - the 5-4 victory over Turori.

"Nobody expected us to win, but we did, and we showed that we were capable of doing well. That made teams a little more wary of us, and although we lost to Vilita in the next game, we came back strongly against our final two opponents. We had to rely on a little luck to retain first place, but luck is an integral part of all top sides. We are now guaranteed two more games in this tournament, and we will continue to play our game, and play it to the best of our ability."

South Osettia will face either Vilita or Crystilakere in their semi-final match sometime in the week.
