The following is my official entrance RP into AO. It is a history of Maklohi Vai, with most recent developments, including this entrance, in the final two paragraphs. Also joining AO will be my puppet Lalo Limahina, mentioned in the last paragraph. I have already talked with Vilita about adding me to the map, and that is mentioned in the final two sections as well. I am immensely happy to be moving to AO, as I now can officially call myself a proud member of AO. Thanks so much for accepting a new member.
Maklohi Vai was first settled by Polynesian seafarers around 670 AD. It developed as a traditional hereditary state after the 830 AD unification of the three tribes, called the Motion by the Vaian people. The chant of the lead unifiers became modern Maklohi Vai's motto: From the sea, together.
The Komeikai dynasty was the first leading group of the country, leading from the Motion to 1462 AD. They instituted many important reforms, including a national currency (the Vala), a staggered government system with steps of local officials, and a island wide road system. Na'atu Komeikai (1032-1094) founded the now capital city of Kolo Lahi as his personal residence and location of his palace. While the Komeikai were just and fair rulers, they could not sustain their dynasty due to their practice of only marrying rulers from neighboring islands. This proved to be too small a gene pool, and the only son of the last Komeikai king was born heavily premature due to pre zygotic defects, and died almost immediately after birth. As the king had no siblings, after his death the power went to his youthful second cousin, Ufakarai.
Ufakarai is perhaps the most memorable leader in Maklohi Vai's history. Ruling from 1462 to his death at 94 in 1526, he oversaw great advancement. This period is now referred to as Maklohi Vai's Voto'oa (Renaissance). Recognizing the power of the people at around the same time Machiavelli did in Italy, Ufakarai instituted laws that increased the ability of citizens within their community, and in 1496 started the annual Maklohi Vai Games, a series of both athletic and artistic competitions held in Kolo Lahi every August. For more information on the games, see the 'culture' post of the same name. Ufakarai also created the first Polynesian constitutional monarchy when in 1507, he, at the urging of the populace, signed the first Vaian constitution, the Lao. At the time of the Tutoi uprising in neighbor Siroy, Ufakarai created the first ever Vaian citizen army to lead into battle alongside the rebellion. The foremost Vaian scholars are in agreement that without Maklohi Vai's support, the rebellion would not have succeeded. At his death, Ufakarai passed control to his son Ufaranui, who upheld his father's reforms. And so began the Ufa dynasty. Maklohi Vai experienced prosperity during the dynasty, and also the first contact outside of the Polynesian world.
Sir Francis Drake visited Maklohi Vai in 1579, during his Pacific expedition. For the islanders, it was a rather unremarkable event, as they had heard from travelers among themselves about the far off civilizations. One such traveler was Yomotai, who had ventured along with a group from Siroy to the Mexican coast. He became a link in the chain of limited translation, as Drake had a Spanish crewman aboard. From English to Spanish to Vaian, few words could be communicated, but there was limited trade accomplished, and after two weeks, Drake's crew left.
The Ufa dynasty continued for centuries due the adaptability of its rulers. At the end of its rule in 1874, Maklohi Vai had developed into a community nearly as modern as the Europe of its era. 1874 is an important date in Vaian history. At this date, an attempted Samoan takeover eliminated the Ufa dynasty, and tested the resolve of the country. Through perseverance, the people fought back, united for their freedom. They installed the modern republic in 1877, which stands through today. The first president was Kamanakai Oa'a Pani, an indirect descendant of the 3rd Komeikai king. Ufakarai's 1507 constitution was amended for the modern day, and a true Republic was underway. For structure, see the government post.
Maklohi Vai progressed as the world progressed through 19th and 20th centuries, and has been a stable country ever since the beginning of the republic. It came into the Nation States community in early 2012, and after approval by the National Athletics Council, its first international sporting events were the 23rd World Baseball Classic and the 2nd World Badminton Championships. After some bureaucracy was negotiated, there was also an agreement to start an international baseball tournament in Maklohi Vai. Its first edition began RL August 31.
Recently, Maklohi Vai has become an active NS Sports nation, famed in football for its relentless defensive game that has humbled many a giant. It was by this measure that Maklohi Vai received an invitation to join the most exalted of sporting regions, Atlantian Oceania. Vaian leadership was concerned with keeping culture intact, but after contact with a senior AO member, decided to officially have the sporting teams of Maklohi Vai join AO. As per the agreement, Maklohi Vai will reside in the subregion of Redwood, its traditional home. This subregion will have the culture and customs of Redwood, but remains in AO for physical and sporting purposes. Vaians were concerned with preserving their culture, but decided to vote for the measure after deliberating that they were solely in control of their own culture. This new move will provide Maklohi Vai with significant opportunities to increase its international prestige, both in sports and otherwise.
Also joining Maklohi Vai in the move is its Commonwealth of Lalo Limahina. The “Com,” as it is known, was founded by Vaian leadership in 1982 as a production center. It is practically an extension of Maklohi Vai, but due to autonomous leadership, is a separate nation [Read: Puppet]. This leadership had little culture whatsoever to concern themselves with, and so immediately jumped at the chance to move. |
