[OOC: This is the RP where I officially reclaim my land back from Star. For those of you new here, I was Leglaese a while before this, then let it cease, only to come back to it. Also, I know the Latin phrase I'm using might be grammatically incorrect, but so be it]

IC:

What is the southern-most Starbladyi city, might you ask? Depending on who you ask, Snowcroft was a common answer, having been built on the bank of the Valinci River some twenty years prior. Others would beg to differ, however, claiming the city of Curia, on the border with the Legal Republic, part of The Lowland Clans, as technically the furthest south. Those who answered Curia were right in terms of directionals, as Curia is extremely far to the south of Snowcroft and the Protectorate; a great number of people and cities stood between the two cities mentioned, in fact. Nay, the question as to which was the most southern Starblaydi city depended on whether one could really consider the lands south of Snowcroft, which were technically occupied by Starblaydia, to be truly Starblaydi...

Darkness had fallen over the land hours ago, though there was still time before the first light. During this time, the men working moved swiftly, posting the signs to any surface that could hold them, not to mention inserting them as advertisements in the local papers of the former cities and towns of Legalese. Fortunately for them, the normal silence of the late night was not disturbed by their actions. The noise would come in the morning, when the public would see what they had posted:

Lex Proscribitur Populus

When in the course of governing a people, one must remember that ultimately, their power comes solely from those people, for it is the people who govern, and consent to government.  Regardless of the just and fair decisions of a ruler, his government shall not be one of legitimacy in the eyes of the people, unless he is governing with the consent of the people.  It is the principle of democracy that is the root of good government; from it grows liberty and justice.  A leader who governs without consent, yet is nonetheless just, is still offering fruit from the poisonous tree, regardless of the fruit’s good taste.

At this time, it should also be noted that we do not come here to completely criticize the work of Tiberius.  The Lord-Protector has been benevolent in the Starblaydi occupation of the Legalese lands, and for that, we our thankful.  However, he leaves us in a position where that benevolence can be revoked at only his will, and not the will of the people.  That is where we lay our grievance.

And so on this day, the 15th of the Twelth month in the Tenth year of occupation, do we humbly request our total return of free will.  The Legalite people deserve more than just a mangled identify as part of a Starblaydia that occupies, but does not recognize us.  We want our chance to build a republic, and to make of it what we’d like.

So sayeth the Iudicari, Lex Proscribitur Populus.

"You're going to do it, aren't you?" Lady Viannor scowled at the Lord-Protector, who merely nodded back at her. "I bloody knew it!"

A stack of paper flew across the room in a mini-storm of A4 sheets. Viannor whirled and placed her hands on the edge of his desk.

"How could you let them do this? The post a letter and all-of-a-sudden you give them half a nation back? What the hell happened to you while I was away?"

"Vi," Tiberius was calm as a summer breeze, "we've got what we wanted from this situation, and now we can get something else. All those Legalite lawyers came to us, remember? Our crime rate was sky-high, and look what they did to it: they made our laws air-tight and our legal system so stremlined I could execute a democracist tomorrow and not hear but a whimper from Sarzo or Stone. Christ, even the U.N. recognises that you can leave your car unlocked with the stereo in open view in even the worst parts of the country and it'll still not be stolen.

"They've done the job we wanted them to do. We've bled those provinces dry of resources, both natural and human. And now they want it back? Fine! Let them have it, I've never even been there. And, what's more, by giving it back to them, we shoot up in the eyes of the Region and the World. 'Big, Evil Starblaydia gives back Land to Peoples who feel they're being Opressed'. Just think of the benefits if people are dumb enough to think that was true."

"But," Viannor was still incensed, "what about that place of my own?"

"Oh for crying out loud," Tiberius looked to the ceiling, "take an island off Aquiliana, there's bloody three of them to chose from. Pick one, whichever you want, it's yours."

"Really?"

"Of course! Our police are all over that country by now, it's ours. And one of those islands is yours."

On region-wide television, with near-constant newspaper, telly and radio coverage in Starblaydia itself, as well as leafleting to every home, the following announcement was made.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Lord-Protector Tiberius Starblayde of Starblaydia, and I have an announcement to make. It has been almost exactly ten years since Starblaydia placed its protective arms around the northern half of Legalese. Since then, our two peoples became as one, but always we knew that the day would come when the Legalites were ready to take the reigns of their own power once more. Now, we feel, is that time.

"May I be the first to officially re-recognise the Legal Federation of Legalese. Welcome back, gentlemen. Starblaydia Triumphant."

OOC: Heh... glad to see you actually said something, Star... I'd forgotten to post like it'd already happened tongue.gif

IC:

The announcement was taken with both shock and amazement in the former, and now once-again, Legalese, for nobody expected the issue to come to a head so quietly. There was nothing left to do but celebrate...

And so the celebration continued, lasting through the entire week, as crowds from Francopolis to Port Dien took to the streets in victory. The cities practically shut down, doing enough to keep orderly, but in a state of pure joy.

The various city leaders all celebrated as well, some taking to the streets with their denziens. Of no exception to this was James Wilson, the ever-popular mayor of Francopolis. After taking the reins, his popularity levels had surged to points beyond those of one of his predecessors, the great Edwin Francis, who practically ran a whole country during the Great Storm. Hence, it is clear to see why on New Year's Eve, it was Wilson, rumored by some to play a pivotal role in the new Legalese government, to make the keynote speech.

As Wilson walked up to the podium in front of the Francopolitan City Hall, the crowd grew silent, a first in seven days. James leaned in, and made his first official statement since the Lord-Protector recognized the new country:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, my fellow Francopolans, and now, I'm proud to say, my fellow Legalites!"

He paused briefly to let the cheers subside, and then continued:

"We have much to celebrate, and much celebrating has already come. We begin a new era tomorrow, as the Legalese Flag returns permanently to the rooftops, and from Bekk Lake to the Nemyan Strait, the Legalites are united once more. You can be very sure that when the new Senate reconvenes, one of their first orders of business will be to declare this week to forever be a week of holiday and celebration in Legalese, as we usher in a new era!"

"Now, as I touched upon, the Senate will be meeting. Now, what do I mean by that? Well, as most of you surely remember, our old Senate was made up of a mix of representatives of the regional councils, as well as directly elected officials. After talking with other city and county council leaders, it has been determined that as we'd be the Senate of old, we will convene in the first week of the new year to facilitate the formation of a full Legalese government. I will continue to update all of you on progress as we have made it."

Suddenly, James' semi-serious face grew a huge grin.

"But now, my fellow Legalites, it is not the time to talk politics. Let us continue the celebration! Long live the Legalites, and LONG LIVE LEGALESE!"

The roar of the crowd washed over Mayor Wilson, as he rushed off the stage. His advisers applauded, though one pulled him aside for a moment. "Um, sir?" he said to Wilson. "What was this about the Senate? They probably just think the status quo is going to happen."

Wilson nodded. "Well, it's too early to tell them too much; let them celebrate, they deserve it." He then added, as an afterthought: "Besides, I didn't lie, the Senate is reconvening. What I didn't say is what might happen there."
