IC: "And welcome to Chacoria, where the Opening Ceremony for the inaugural Winter AOlympics have just ended. The participants are enjoying themselves, and there's the AOlympic flame. The crowd is giving a standing ovation, and what a great performance by the artistes in the Ceremony tonight. Let's go over the Day 1 Schedule. We've got Ice Hockey on Day 1, the preliminary stages - with seven teams involved, it is expected that two teams will have to face each other in a preliminary match to decide which team goes to the group phase and which team goes home. The draw was made earlier today at CAO Headquarters, and Lamoni will face Triangunation in the preliminaries. Let's also take a look at the group draw.

Ice Hockey Chacoria '06
Group A
Chacor
Starblaydia
Lamoni/Triangunation

Group B
Sarzonia
NEWI Cefn Druids
Psytroxia

Also on Day 1, the Men's Curling event will take place, and the Half-pipe Snowboarding contest will happen in the evening. Until then, this has been Chacorian AOlympic Review. Good night, and see you tomorow!"

Lamoni Locker Room: before the match

"Okay men, we've are going to face off against Triangunation to see if we can compete. I expect one hundred percent performance out of all of you clowns. You're the best hockey team that Lamoni has fielded, but don't forget that the eyes of the entire nation are upon us. Though, we won't have to worry about being bombed, eh?" The coach asked.

There was nervous laughter as the team waited for their first match.

"We don't know what Triangunation has planned, so we'll be going for a physical match, making our presence felt. Do try not to make stupid penalties, though. This is a must win game. Certain people would not be amused if we lost."

After that, the team settled into the things that all hockey teams do when waiting for a hockey game.

Blizzards hope to Snow competition

Coach Howard Clark was worried. His team had been playing together for only a matter of weeks after the team held a brutal training camp. The team had played a few exhibition matches against Sarzonian professional hockey teams, but with the league getting set to begin its first season, it was hard for the national team to get an idea of how it would do facing international competition.

"We still have to get used to the idea of playing as a team," Clark said. "You can tell we still have to get used to each other out there."

Goaltender Brian Snow (2.15 goals against average during the tour) solidified his position as the starting goalie for the Blizzards by making several great stops. The team's play between the pipes is "the least of our worries," Clark said.

"Snowie's played well," Clark said. "If he plays like he did during the exhibition tour, we should be fine in there. But the rest of the team has to step up or he'll have to stand on his head for us to even get a tie."

"We haven't had a chance to scout anyone," Snow said. "That works against us, but it may also work against the other teams out there. They don't know us either."

The team said it would play a neutral zone trap and emphasize short, crip passes to keep possession of the puck. They also said they spent a lot of time on the power play and shorthanded situations. One area Clark said he was most concerned about was face offs.

"We lost 58 percent of our face offs during the tour," Clark said. "We're going to have to do a lot better than that against real competition."

Blizzards streak to win in first game, 5-2

The Sarzonian national hockey team wasn't sure if it would be ready for its first-ever international competition in the sport. Its previous attempt to start a hockey team and enter a hockey competition died out when events in Inurface kept the team from even playing a match. After their 5-2 win over Psytroxia, the Blizzards looked like a team that was more than ready for Olympic competition.

"We did well to win this match," Coach Howard Clark said. "[Goaltender Brian Snow] played very well and we got a great game out of Mike Ridley. When you do that, you're going to win a lot of hockey games."

Ridley, the right winger for the Lexington Lazers, scored two goals and assisted on two others fro the Blizzards (1-0) who put the game out of reach before the teams entered the intermission between the second and third periods. From there, it was all about Snow.

Snow made 27 saves, including 13 in the third period when Psytroxia began to double shift its offensive-minded players in an effort to get back into the game. They scored both goals in the final 10 minutes of the game.

"We're disappointed that we let them score late in the game, but we're pleased we were able to get a 4-0 lead on them," defenseman Bill Langham said. "We just need to make sure to put the noose on them when we have a chance."

Fellow defenseman Kevin Dewey (one goal, two assists) earned the number three star while Ridley and Snow earned the number one and number two stars for the game respectively. The Blizzards earned some confidence entering their next match against the NEWI Cefn Druids.

"Our chance to move on in this tournament is in our hands," Clark said. "We've got to make sure we play well against our Druidish opponents."

Curlers Take Gold!
Curling? What the hell is that?

Starblaydia sit in a lovely second-place in the Medals Table of the Winter AOlympics, having won their first medal, a gold, in the Curling.

Much like bowling on ice, Starblaydia kicked Triagunatation's ass, however Curlers quantify that.

The Starblaydi Olympic Rayzors won their first Ice Hockey match by defeating hosts Chacor by Three goals to Two.

Thorin Nibin also missed out on a worthy Bronze Medal in the Snowbaord Halfpipe, but until the advent of Dwarves in Football or Ice Hockey, he's currently the greatest ever Starblaydi Sportsdwarf.

Rayzors all the way, baby!

The Daily Druid

DRUIDS SHOCK OLYMPICS
Two golds out of three aint bad!

The not-particularly-wintery nation that is NEWI Cefn Druids has surprised Atlantian Oceania, indeed probably their own people, by winnin two gold medals in the first three days of the AO Winter Olympics in Chacor.

Firstly, snowboarder Freddie Sweeney beat all comers in the half-pipe discipline, then Trevor McAdam flew down the run in the quickest time to notch up a second Druidish gold medal. Indeed, another gold could well be on the cards, as one of the two big Druidish speedskating medal hopes, Wilfred Trevor, has set a world record in the semi-finals of the 1000m short track event, finishing almost a second ahead of his nearest rivals and 1.3 seconds in front of fellow Druidish medal hope Barry Wood.

However, while the Druidish team has been the most successful so far, this is probably down to the fact that the skiing events haven't started yet. There are very few Druidish skiiers, and only a few have flown to Chacor to take part. But we can only hope for the best from them.

Which is more than can be said for some of the more... how shall we say, Druid-esque performers on the Druidish team. Jerry Trowell was the biggest failure of all, failing to even complete all of his runs in the luge. Horatio Alexander had a reputation to keep up in the half-pipe, but was overshadowed by his winning team-mate as he crashed out. And the Druidish curling team were not much to write home about, getting thrashed on both occasions on which they played. But on the whole, it has been a surprisingly successful campaign so far, and the Druidish team will be looking for that to continue througout the games.
