Lemke, Woodstock run Wild

WOODSTOCK (ASP) -- Looks like Hendrix Stadium will remain open a little while longer.

The Woodstock Wild extended the life of their old home grounds with an impressive 4-0 win over Hypocrium City in the first leg of the second round of the AO Champions League in front of 79,215 supporters at the stadium, which is being torn down after the Wild's run in favour of brand new Bryan Marshall Stadium.

"We didn't want the old gal to die just yet," Coach David Bostwick said. "She's got a few more games left in her."

So do the Wild, who dominated the match from the opening kickoff. Forward Mike Lemke, usually the forgotten man alongside strike partner and former Sarzonian national team captain Brian Wilson, scored three goals and assisted on Wilson's late marker and Horace Sandt made five saves in his first match back after the Sarzonian national team won the third place match over Bedistan.

"We've got one more match against these guys," Lemke said. "We're not going to get ahead of ourselves. They're a good team or they wouldn't be here."

The Wild could have been excused for thinking they were playing a return leg against a Weegian side, since the Wild won their first leg against a representative of that footballing country 6-0. But Bostwick said the team is looking for a much tougher fight in the return leg.

"Home wins are vital in tournaments like these," he said. "The road leg is going to be tough."

Owls Look for Wild Dismissal

Kenter Surf's Yeaddin Owls fought off a determined Nehpi Bears side to advance to the Quarter Finals of the AO Champions League. The other Vilitan side in the tournament, Inland Peaks FC, did not encounter the same fortune, crashing out at the hands of the Montepool Waves in the second round.

The Owls will be looking for revenge over the Wild, who were crowned champions of the first AO Champions League. Yeaddin, however, are not looking up at their opposition, who have yet to reach a Nationstates Champions League final, something the Owls have done in three consecutive tournaments. Surf has vowed that the Owls will come out all guns blazing and will look to closing the door on the two legged tie at the first hurdle by opening up a large advantage over their Sarzonian counterparts.

Karakan says "bring 'em on!"

With the Nephi Bears being eliminated from the tournament, it is up to the Karakan Wolves to carry the Lamonian torch in the second AO Champs League. Karakan will be facing Starblaydia's famed Iskara Daii in the quarter finals, and will be looking to advance.

Coach Max Stilwell claims "While we would like to advance in this tournament, we are not going to underestimate the Daii. Nephi did fairly well against them in the group stages, but all bets are off in the knockouts. We are just going to have to keep applying pressure against the Daii, and take what we can get out of them."

While this will be a tough match, it is still one that the better side can win.

Wild ready for Owls attack

Defending AO Champions League cup holders Woodstock Wild prepare to face one of the few familiar opponents in the club football world when they battle the Vilitan league's Yeaddin Owls in the quarterfinals of the second AO Champions League.

"We're familiar with them and we know what they've said about us," Coach David Bostwick said. "They underestimate us at their own peril."

Indeed, Sarzonia's most accomplished club side captured the first-ever AO Champions League match by defeating Strike F.C. of Vilita's league in the finals. The Wild have been practicing against minor league opponents who play a similar style to the Owls and have "done our homework" on the Owls.

Bostwick said the team is hoping to "bury" Yeaddin Owls in the home leg in front of an announced sellout at Hendrix Stadium, saying he wanted to put the pressure on Yeaddin when the Wild have to play away.

"We've been watching as much tape on them as we can," forward Brian Wilson said. "Anything we can do to get an edge on those guys."

The Wild advanced to the quarterfinals against Yeaddin by drawing 3-3 away to Hypocrium City after a 4-0 rout in Hendrix Stadium. The Wild won the aggregate 7-3.

Quarters Shape Up
3/8 Teams are actually any good

Will Atlantian Oceania's premier club tournament produce the same Final as in the mirroring competition for the entire planet, the Nationstates Champions League? It's a true testament to the strength of AO's sporting talent that the last three NSCL Finals have been won by a team from this region, with the most-recent Final contested by two teams in the Quarter-Finals of this tournament.

Iskara Daii, Yeaddin Owls - and even to some extent Woodstock Wild - represent the remaining recognisable quality in the AOCL. They are the teams with genuine international class in the ranks, ones who have proved themselves time and again on the international stage - and they all have a Champions' League Trophy to their name. Yeaddin have their two consecutive NSCL titles, denied a third straight trophy by Iskara Daii in the Final, giving the Starblaydi club their second international trophy. Sarzonia's Wild also have a trophy, won in the first edition of this very tournament.

So, what should happen in the following matches?

World Champions Iskara Daii should see off the Lamonian team with no problems, probably facing Liga Starblaydia rivals Montepool Waves in the Semis. Former World-Champions Yeaddin Owls would expect to beat defending Regional Champions Woodstock Wild, with the winner of that match cruising to the Final.

Should we expect another Daii/Owls Final? I wouldn't bet against it.

Daii Lose Opener to Nobodies
Lue: "Team arsed could be not"

The current best club team in the world (with the trophy to prove it) are reeling from criticism today after the multi-national squad began the Quarter-Finals by losing to 'a bunch of Lamonians' in Lamoni.

"The team just arsed could not be," said Rejistanian Manager Tuade Lue, "They know that in this moment, the world champions they are. Why need they to prove again against people like that?"

Lue'he's clam attitude seems to be somewhat of a Titanic deck chair re-arranger, as he has yet to find decent replacements for some of his aging squad. Rumours that Captain Ratuva's boots will be filled by an Audioslavian continue to circulate, but as to who will replace 34 year-old Bedistani defender Quentin Phillips or Vilitan striker Carmine Mbizdo or even Britannican 'keeper Nick Cavaletti - the answer as yet is still 'no answer'.

Hopefully the aging three will take a short break from their Liga Starblaydia actions to be able to pull of a devastating home-win against the Wolves, but being knocked out by one Lamonian side after seeing off the other is not something the Daii would like to see in their record books.

Karakan beats Daii 2-0 in 1st leg

In a match where it seemed that the other side couldn't be arsed to score, Karakan won the first leg 2-0 in Lamoni.

Karakan's coach, Timothy Sarasmus; was pleased with the victory. "We would have liked to have score a few more goals, but if we manage to get past the Daii, I would be happy."

Indeed this would mark the first time that a Lamonian team would have won an entire match against a Starblaydi team, and the fact that it was against Starblaydia's world famous Iskara Daii makes it extra sweet. If Karakan can put the Daii away again, they will advance to the finals to likely face the Montepool Waves. Karakan currently has a win and a draw against Montepool so the Wolves might just have a chance at the league cup if they can make it past the Daii.

Both of the Karakan goals came from Cody Barco fairly early into the match; which seemed to wake the Daii up a little, but not enough to make a difference in the match. It is thought that the Daii 'knew' that they could get past the Wolves easily, and so didn't think that their arrogance could be used against them. We are sure that the Daii will be a little more alert in their next match, which should make things interesting for both squads.

Karakan - 2 Cody Barco (20, 23)
Iskara Daii - 0

Semi-Final Preview Special

THE Sabres are there! A two-all draw with Sunnyslope meant an aggregate victory for Stanton Town, and a place in the last four. Let's have a look at the games in the semi-finals.

Stanton Town (KRY) v Montepool Waves (NBR)

The Sabres will be hard-pressed to beat this Britannican side. Though Nova Britannicus does not have its own professional league, the Waves qualified through the Liga Starblaydia, one of Atlantian Oceania's "Big Three". The first leg will be in Montepool, and Max Sciandri's side will be hard pressed to get through in this tie.

Yeaddin Owls (VIL) v Karakan Wolves (LAM)

On paper, this looks like an easy ride for the Owls. But in truth, any side that can beat current NSFA Champions League holders Iskara Daii over two legs should be a challenge. Lamonian football is on the up - the national side reached the AOCAF IX semi-finals - and this could be a closer tie than first imagined. After all, they've got this far, haven't they?

Waves Laugh At Daii
Krytenians Await in Semis

Not even a hat-trick from the much-vaunted Carmine Mbidzo could help Iskara Daii as they fell on the away-goals rule to... some team from Lamoni. Ha. ha. ha.

The mighty, mighty Montepool, on the other hand, thrashed Rappor FC of... some foreign place... 5-0 over the the two legs, catapulting them into a Semi-Final against the Stanton Town 'Sabres'. Young Turorian Jutar Ranaso is having an excellent time up front, as quality crosses supplied by the Britannican pair of Rupert Hawksworth and Wilburforce Jones, as well as Waves' Starblaydi Captain Nelson de Montford are giving young Ranaso all the goals he could want.

Watch out, Stanton, the Waves are starting to rule.

Karakan makes it to semis, face Yeaddin Owls

After making it to the Champs league semis on the away-goals rule (OOC: How does the away-goals rule work?), the Wolves will have their work cut out for them as they face Vilita's Yeaddin Owls. On paper, this looks like an easy win for the Owls, but Lamonian teams have always managed to find a way to beat the odds, resulting in some major upsets. Could this result in another major upset? Either way, Karakan has made it farther in this league than any Lamonian team that came before it. With the semi-final finish of the Lamonian national squad in the AOCAF, the Lamonian football star is on the ascendent.

Darren Wilhoite scored the lone Karakan goal in the second led of that round.

Karakan - 1 Darren Wilhoite (86)
Iskara Daii - 3 Carmine Mbidzo (15, 40, 65)
