Mutual Defense Pact?

President Stone's plane had just landed at the main airport in Skyhaven, Demot. Seeing that Demot was going to be placed on Lamoni's eastern border (OOC: whenever CH does the map), he felt that it was going to be important to secure this border as well. A friendship with the government and people of Demot would ensure that all but the Lamonian border with SAAS member Nojika would be secure. To the south were Myrtannia and Yishreal (OOC: I forgot how to spell it, sorry), to the west was open water, and to the east would be Demot. All in all, not bad, as far as international relations went.

Reaching the bottom of the traditional air stairs, he was met by the traditional Demotian welcoming committee, led by their Prime Minister. The Lamonian Foreign Ministry had not been able to get him the Prime Minister's name before he left, but he would find the name out soon enough. Stone wasn't worried, he was about to offer The Sporting Fortress of Demot a major diplomatic present to put under the tree. He was thinking of a broad package of diplomatic overtures such as a Mutual Defense Pact, and civilian air flights in and out of Nephi International Airport would be something that they couldn't refuse.

The position of Prime Minister really didn't carry much wieght around in Demot, espicially with Elizabeth as Matriarch. She had a sever distrust of anyone besides herself and Alexander, and thus handled all foriegn affairs and policies herself. So when Minister Warfen and his family greeted President Stone, they were merely there as to act as curtousy greeters than anything else. After exchanging greetings, the family lead the President to a waiting limo, which would take the President to the Matriarch's mansion, where Elizabeth awaited him and had a feast prepared, the likes of which were suited for a king.

After the ride in the limo, President Stone came to the Matriarch's Mansion. It was as impressive as he remembered it, and the Matriarch herself was awaiting him... if only he could remember her name.

Stone had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, but he didn't want anyone else to know until he saw fit to release the information. He'd been the President for so long, and he wanted to go out with a diplomatic bang. A Mutual Defense Pact with Demot would be just what he needed. It would also secure all but the northern border with Nojika. With the upcoming SDL/SAAS war that everyone with a brain saw coming, THAT would be vital to Lamonian security.

As the doors to the mansion were held open for him by Demotian diplomats, he could see the Matriarch waiting for him.

"Greetings, Matriarch. It is always good to see the face of a friend in these trying times for the entire region. Baaden, the black dragon that you sent to me is doing quite well for himself. I took the advice to be the first thing that the baby dragon saw, and I can tell that he is all that you said that he could be, and more."

Elizabeth produced a smile at the mention of such care for the noble creature she had sent the President. She had the upmost respect for those who cared and respected nature. It was then that she decided she could be open with the President, and not force the perfect image of a content leader that she so often did when her underlings were around.

"Indeed, they are such wonderous creatures, particularly the males. They are the ones who guard the nest when the female lays the eggs. They also have mates for life. In their own way, I believe them superior to humans in most aspects. But I shall not bother you with my idealogies tonight. I've had my chefs prepare a feast, so enjoy this meal, and do tell why it is that a nation's president would make an unannounced journey to a relatively quiet and isolationist nation. For there must be some reason behind this visit other than casual chat about the current state of the region and pets."

As Stone sat himself down at the table, he continued the conversation.

"Certainly, Matriarch. I have come to Demot in order to offer... what you might say are diplomatic breakthroughs. How would Demot at large react to a Mutual Defense Pact and rights for Demotian civilian aircraft at Lamonian airports?"

Stone watched the Matriarch closely for any reaction.

Elizabeth picked up a grape from her plate and popped it in, trying to hide the slight concern she had about this proposal. It was true Demot needed an ally or two, but picking sides could inevitably lead to future attacks by the enemies of their allies or those they turned down. However the case with Lamoni was diffferent, for they where the immiedate neighbors to her country.

"This offer intruiges me President. On the one hand we would welcome this agreement with open arms, but in the other there is potential political fallout with other nations. As you might of noticed, the Demotian military is quite small, made up mostly of reserves and the Royal Guard. When compared to the other nation's military strenth of the region, it would be hard pressed for us to prevent an invasion. So my question President Stone is simply that if we were to commit to this alliance if you would truely support us in our darkest hour if that occasion came?"

"The Free Republic would use everything in it's power to defend Demotian territory if Demot is attacked, Matriarch. Now, and forever. As you already know, the Free Republic is also part of the Strategic Defense League. I am not going to make an SDL sales pitch, or suggest that Demot join the SDL against it's wishes, but I am making the point that we are not without resources. We can field a massive army when needed, for example. This pact does not in any way imply that either the SDL or SAAS will attack Demot, either. The SDL is fighting for the rights of it's member nations, and the SAAS would largely ignore Demot. Yes, the Free Republic would support Demot in any way that is required." Stone then bit into an apple.

Elizabeth was now satisified. How could she not accept this proposal, for it was clearly in the best interest of Demot and its' people. She rose a glass of juice to the President.

"Well then Mr Stone, I do believe we have a deal. Demot humbly accepts this pact, and the associated agreements within it's jurdistiction. May generations from now look in their history books and read about how this single night forged a long term friendship between our nations."

With that, she downed the juice and finished off her plate, quite content about the achievements made over a single meal.

Now finishing his apple, Stone smiled when he heard the Matriarch's decision. "Excellent, I believe that I can easily win ratification from the Lamonian Senate. After dinner, perhaps we can discuss starting civilian air travel between the Free Republic and Demot. Perhaps a round trip daily flight between Nephi International airport, and an airport in Demot that you can name?"

"I believe that the New Mirria International Airport would bve adequte for this agreement. Located in the beautiful southeastern corner of the the nation, it is really a jewel in our country. Once finished with this meal, I shall sign the document, and then this matter shall be done with." Elizabeth gives a soft grin as she finishes up her salad quietly.

Stone smiled easily. "This is remarkable food, Matriarch. The company is good as well." All the while, he was thinking of how vital these agreements would be to Lamoni's future.
