United Meridian Goes International

At ISUM Headquarters in Meridian City, all the Vice President's appointed by the CEO had gathered for a conference called by VP of Commerce Drake Richards, who was in charge of the government during the CEO's absence at the International Trade Conference. The topic of the day: unknown. However, rumors had been circulating that the CEO and Richards had been planning something the past few weeks, and many hoped this meeting would be the grand unveiling of their plan. As it so happened, the unveiling that took place was one that the entire population of United Meridian had waited for a long time.

"Ladies and gentleman," Richards began, "The ISUM is too big for it's own shoes."

Everyone had a chuckle at this. It was an old joke in the government. The ISUM's ever growing economic expansion had recently been withheld because there simply wasn't enough land on the tiny Meridian Islands to accomodate the kind of growth that the country was moving towards.

"As you know, International Trade has always been vital to the ISUM simply because our landlocked country cannot support the sort of economic power we have achieved."

All the VP's nodded in unison. The opinion was, after all, a common one.

"So, by order of the CEO and the spirit and voice of the people of United Meridian, the ISUM is globalizing in Atlantian Oceania."

A cheer rose from the table. Everyone knew what this meant.

The day had finally come.

The ISUM was going global.

"Telegrams will be sent to every nation in Atlantian Oceania. The time has come for the ISUM to do what it was born to do: business and trade."

Another cheer flamed up from the table.

And with a mischevious wink to the VP of Foreign Policy, Richards turned to the table and said:

"Time to make friends."

QUOTE

To All Esteemed Nations of the Region of Atlantian Oceania,

My name is Drake Richards, and I am Vice President of Commerce here in United Meridian. For some time now my nation has stood here, in the corner of Atlantian Oceania, relatively isolated from it's neighbours. With the recent International Trade Conference, that fact has begun to change, but now we are taking matters into our own hands.

United Meridian is an interesting nation. You see, industrialism and economics rule here. The economy is often the only thing that most Meridi care for, save loved ones and family members. Our lives revolve around our business: how we do business is how we live. Therefore, our rates of economic expansion are rather frightening and the wealth of the ISUM grows exponentially almost every day. However, as it so often does, the physical world is once again getting in the way of our economic growth, and is stopping us from our usual pattern of growth. You see, we have, quite simply... run out of room.

The Meridian Islands are small. Too small for our tastes. We can no longer rely on more factories and more banks to fuel our economy. We must find new economic horizons or else my people will face a shattering wall of economic standstill. The economic horizon we have found is all of you.

On behalf of CEO Brendan Steven and the nation of United Meridian, I will be visiting any nations who will accept me to negotiate for international trade between their country and United Meridian. We are prepared to offer special benefits packages for opened trade routes, lower tariffs, and the establishment of ISUM International corporations in foreign countries. All who accept this offer will find themselves in a banquet of resources and wealth at their disposal. The ISUM honors it's friends and only wishes to globalize it's halted economy.

Specific topics that we would like to address at these various conferences are as follows:
-Trade routes opened between the ISUM and foreign countries (these trade routes would encompass the allowing of ISUM merchant vessels, aircraft, etc to do trade within foreign nations, as well as allowing aircraft of United Meridian Airlines to land in foreign airports)
-The establishment of ISUM International corporations within foreign nations (many UM companies have expressed keen interest in setting up foreign offices, and these corporations vary from casinos, entertainment, and resorts to factories, banks, and estates. This part of the deal would also encompass foreign corporations setting up offices within the ISUM as well)
-The establishment of foreign embassies in the ISUM and Meridi Embassies in foreign countries
-The allowing of Meridi nationals to enter a foreign country for vacations, business, etc
-Access to the fearsome industrial power of the ISUM

Allow me to further explain the last one. As you may or may not know, almost 50% of United Meridian is covered in industrial or urban sectors. This means that we have an almost unmatched production capacity within the Meridian Islands. For us, this has been the source of our economic strength: our industries give Meridi citizens all the incredible luxuries they enjoy day to day. For foreigners interested in access to the ISUM's industrial power, this means that for a price the ISUM is capable of manufacturing anything you want. This could range from the production of textiles, plastic etc all the way up to aircraft, vehicles, combat vehicles and weapons. In regards to the last one, the ISUM will always reserve the right to refuse a production order when we feel our product will not be used in a responsible manner that upholds international law.

We only wish to make friends within Atlantian Oceania and establish ourselves on the International Market. I urge you to please respond to this telegram so that we may begin an era of friendly relations between United Meridian and all foreign nations. The economic advantages to all countries involved would be astounding. I await your reply.

Regards,
Drake Richards

Benjamin Clark sat down in his chair to begin another night of work, reading some of the many messages that the CEO received from foreign nations to determine their importance. This one, it seemed, was from the Vice President of Commerce of United Meridian. That must be some bureaucracy they have, Clark thought, to have to have both a president and a vice-president in charge of what seemed to be only a single part of their government. He began reading the message. Hmm…“special benefits”…wait, did he just use the T word?…“unmatched production capacity,” indeed! Might as well handle this one myself…

We already have a banquet of resources and wealth at our disposal. And your people could conduct trade with us right now, if you weren’t stopping them with your “tariffs” and other tools of evil. Do some slani research.

My apologies if you took this offer insultingly. As a fellow corporate nation, we were hoping to open up trade relations specifically with you. Also Mr. Clark, like yourselves, the ISUM does not use tariffs. The mentioning of them in the telegram was to bring down tariffs found in foreign countries, not in United Meridian. If it is still possible at this point, we would hope to visit you on this tour. We meant no offense when we mentioned a banquet of resources, we simply meant that these talks would benefit all parties involved. I await your answer.

I apologize for the unfortunate misunderstanding—with all the thousands of socialist nations that send us proposals like this from time to time, it can be far too easy to jump to conclusions.

You are welcome to visit the Unified Capitalizt States on your tour.

We accept, and in honor of what we hope will be a long and prosperous relationship between 2 corporate nations of the same principles and values, we will have you first on the list of nations to visit once the final schedule is made up.

From the desk of Ug-Mt, Robber Captain of Az-cz

Mr. Drake Richards,

We are interested in establishing relations with your country. As a base none of your proposed goals are in objection. We would welcome ISUM corporations within our country, allow use to our airports, the establishment of Embassies and already your people are free to come if they so choose. However, if you did want to come you would have to follow Az-czid regulations. We notice that you neither care for your citizen's nor your environment's well being. While we are disappointed that you have chosen to do so, if your citizens have accepted such a way of living there is nothing we can do about the issue, however we will not allow such things in Az-cz. We are interested in having you come, but it must be to mutual benefit.

My thanks Mr. Ug-Mt for your kind invitation. We will place you on the schedule immediately. As for the criticism's of our country not caring for the well being of our citizens and it's environment, I must object that Meridi citizens are of the utmost important to us. We have absolutely no taxes within United Meridian and as such many hard working Meridi citizens are extremely wealthy. I must admit, there is some level of poverty, but these are only for those who refuse to work or those who are simply to incompetent to be any good at their jobs. I do not object to your criticism of our environment. The environment is a low priority for the ISUM since it is simply in the way of our expansion as well as our economic growth. I assure you though, all Meridi will follow the laws and regulations of your country during their stay there, and if it is specified, environmental protection can be made a priority for our companies in Az-Cz.
