Repeal "The 40 Hour Workweek"

A proposal to repeal a previously passed resolution

Category: Repeal

Resolution: #59

Proposed by: Vanilla Cake

Description: UN Resolution #59: The 40 Hour Workweek (Category: Social Justice; Strength: Significant) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The United Nations,

CONTENDING that UN Resolution 59, the 40 Hour Work Week, makes it harder to work for a better quality of life, regardless of personal desires, and makes an employer inclined to hire more workers rather than allowing one to work at a self imposed capacity,

SADDENED that, were it just as convenient for employers, fewer employees could, by their own desire for a better life, leave more employees to open new, innovative fields, and advance society,

RECALLING Resolution 8, Citizen Rule Required, and how it urges, "all nations to grant self-rule to all citizen[s]," so they may, "have … control over the way they are governed." It logically follows that each citizen, as opposed to all citizens together, should decide what he or she wishes to do with his or her time,

REALIZING that Resolution 38, The Rights of Labor Unions, guarantees labor unions fundamental rights to operate, requiring that, "appropriate steps [be taken by governments to ensure] the ability of unions to engage in industrial actions," and therefore, repealing Resolution 59 shall not compromise the capacity of the workers of the world to protect themselves against unfair treatment from any employer,

UNDERSTANDING that Resolution 53, Universal Freedom of Choice, calls upon all UN nations to recognize that, "freedom of choice is a defining element of our very humanity and the inalienable right of all humanity," and to further recognize, "a populace granted the freedom to make choices in life is a happier, more content and more productive society," which naturally includes freedom to choice how long one wishes to work,

STATING that the United Nations should commit ourselves to economic self-determination so more nations would join the UN and work together for humanity,

CLARIFYING that this resolution and does not propose to threaten resolutions protecting children from manipulation and exploitation,

CONSERNED that Sections 2 and 7 of Resolution 59 do not fully take into account the necessity for national economies to function above normal capacity in times of war including sectors not imperative to the administration of the country or its running "efficiently",

SHOCKED that, in times which a national government does not declare a national emergency (a status usually reserved of nationwide problems), Section 4 of Resolution 59 does not provide for a situation, the kind which occurs across all nations on a minute by minute basis, in which emergency response personnel may be needed on call to save lives,

AND FRIGHTENED that, even in a national emergency, Section 4 does not provide for circumstances in which doctors or other medical personnel may be needed on call to save lives of patients,

STRIKES Resolution 59 from law.

Approvals: 18 (Vanilla Cake, Xanthal, Northern Sushi, Omigodtheykilledkenny, Sinsvyka, Quetzcotl, Jamesburgh, The Machine Spirit, Suuropolis, Blue Buddhas, The City by the Live S, Ghost_Goth, Christensendom, White Kanatia, Listeneisse, WZ Forums, Gaiah, Garlic Chips)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 112 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Wed Sep 21 2005

Ambivolence on this matter will lead to Starblaydia not voting either way. the 40 hour Workweek would screw over a country's economy, but as Starblaydia is not bound by this - not being in the N, of course - we don't care if UN nations screw their countries over.

The Unified Capitalizt States support the endorsement of this repeal, as it will allow citizens of UN member states the freedom to fairly compete for jobs in a free marketplace.
