I have a proposal for you all. It is time we put our petty differences, and conflicts, and come together. What I propose, is an agreement for free trade of goods, raw materials, etc. between all nations in an agreement, which I have named the Atlantian Oceanic Free Trade Agreement (AOFTA).

There will be an open forum on this in Tyfield, Krytenia, on August 1. All interested parties should send a representative to the Notegia Conference Centre on that day for further discussion.

The Trade Minister is interested in attending the AOFTA summit in Tyfield, Krytenia.  Hopefully, the fact that we just defeated your AOCAF team will leave no bad blood between our two great nations.

Aide: So how's the trade agreement coming, sir?

DB: Not good. Only the Lamoni government have shown any interest. Seem to be good-humoured about it.

Aide: How do you mean, sir?

DB: "Hopefully, the fact that we just defeated your AOCAF team will leave no bad blood between our two great nations." Does he not know in this country it's traditional to blame the referee?

Aide: Apparently not.

"Send them Kryties a message that says we already engage in free trade with nations who have no trade barriers to us, while we merely mirror any trade practices and tariffs of less fair-minded nations," the Starblaydi Minister of Finance Lord Juan Bruntos said to his lackey, "but we don't need a universal agreement to make free trade happen."

A diplomatic statement to that effect was released later that morning.

Vice President for Business and Commerce Janis Hedge looked at the paper handed to her regarding the AOFTA and grimaced.

"Free trade? What the devil are they on about," she said with a dramatic harumph that resonated through the large office in the government building where Cabinet Vice Presidents conducted their business. She gave a knowing glance to both Vice President for Finance Carol Weinberg and Senior Vice President and External Affairs Officer Mark Lorber as the three discussed the proposal.

"Does that mean we'll be forced to trade with those bastards from Xile? Or those bloody wankers from Starblaydia," Weinberg said with a laugh. "Like that's ever going to happen in my lifetime."

"I thought we were supposed to have talks with Xile about mending fences," Hedge said as she looked at Lorber. When he didn't respond, she looked at him insisently.

"Well? Earth to Mark, Earth to Mark! Come in space cadet!"

"I thought you knew the talks broke down long ago. They never actually sent their delegate to meet Grant."

"So you mean to say that we're going to be a signatory nation to an agreement that would force us to have no trade barriers with countries in this region we can't stand? Like Xile or," Hedge said with contempt dripping from her voice, "Chacor?"

"I doubt this is even going to get past the Foreign Relations Committee, let alone the full House," Lorber said. "I doubt you'll have to worry."

"I don't know, those Liberals are bound to do some crazy things over there."

"The Conservatives wouldn't hear of it. The Indies wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole and the Liberal Imperialists will shoot it down. Give Connie some credit."

"Yeah that Jacobi's got a big mouth. Besides, wouldn't Sarzo have to ratify it?"

Lorber gave a look to Hedge.

"Think about it. Would Mike seriously consider signing this piece of rubbish?"

"You're right. All right, when's Desperate Housewives on?"

Dear Minister for Agriculture, Food and Industry of Krytenia.

As representative of His Most August Majesty, John II's government, it is my pleasure to inform you that there is considerable interest in limited free trade with other nations. Although we believe trade should be free, there are some exceptions to this general principle:

- The cinematographic arts industry. although we are willing to import works of cinematographic art into UKRAR and to export our own, we feel that, in order to protect a vital part of the culture of a minor nation from large economies of scale, we retain the right to subsidise our cinematographic arts industry to whatever level necessary for the continued thriving of this industry.

- Other industries. Wherever the government of UKRAR feels that there is cause for concern at the development of the market, such as large economies of scale in the favour of larger nations, or where we feel that the current political situation is insufficiently stable to outsource vital industries, we will take whatever steps we feel necessary to ensure our national safety.

Furthermore, there are some goods that we will not trade in. These are: land or sea mines, weapons of mass destruction, narcotics or mind-altering substances, non-industrial toxic substances, human persons or cost-free labour (slaves.)

All tradeable goods and services not mentioned here are for the time being freely tradeable at international market prices.

- On behalf of the Privy Council and Government of His Most August Majesty, John II, King of the United Kingdom of Rhiam, Aldam and Rhoss, Prince of Rhiam and Lord of the Sun, and Master of the Rhiamic and Rhosic Seas and the Bay of Kharazon,

Theiran, lord Cheyren, Earl of Cheyren, First Minister of Financial and Trade Affairs for His Majesty's government.
