Recent History

Prior to 2006, Gweridijongya was one of 13 territories of One Red Dot. The majority of the population were of indigenous background, as compared to the rest which were mainly inhabited by English, Chinese and Japanese migrants.

On 28 November 2006, One Red Dot collapsed as a result of the assassination of Chief Minister Borich Natodrid and 23 other members of his cabinet. Political turmoil resulted and the nation was reverted to being a British Overseas Territory.

After more than a year of talks, on 24 December 2007 it was decided that One Red Dot was to be split into its former three entities: Dorona, Shusan Islands and Gweridijongya.
In the split, political boundaries were redrawn in Gweridijongya's favour - 1/3 of Dorona was given to Gweridijongya - effectively splitting the mainland side of the former nation into two equal portions.
