The Democratic Republic of KURA-PELLAND

This post is based on the equivalent by Delesa but is not entirely the same

Background
Tech level: modern/near-future. Of major developments since RL 2007: maglev technology is mainstream and electric cars soon will be; wind power can now be stored for future use, but fusion power is still a pipedream.
Potted history: Kura and Pelland were small states divided by a river who were in a perpetual state of unrest; eventually a minor civil war broke out, but with neither military able to sustain a long war peace action was swift and effective, resulting in the creation of a unified Kura-Pelland with the old border city of Trilan as its completely rebuilt capital. The country's borders now spread further north and east, and the landmass-cum-archipelago is now split entirely between it and Vephrall. For now, the majority of the population are still on the western peninsula, but with the population set to expand rapidly in the near future this seems certain to change.
Culture: More strongly based on the arts than many other nations; the country is noted for its support for classical music and in particular opera, though more contemporary music of all kinds is popular as well. English is the lingua franca but foreign languages are fairly widely understood, certainly in the cities. Few converse in non-English languages frequently, but it does help tourism.
National Motto: 'A new beginning, a new progression'
National Anthem: 'All Together' [OOC - and when I actually write it a link will be here]
National Animal: Kangaroo
Ethnicity: White 51%, mixed-race 22%, Asian 12%, black 10%, others 5%
Nationality: first-generation immigrants form about 1.5% of the population, most from Vephrall and Nedalia
Nationality: Kura-Pellandi
Median Age: 33.1 [M 32.8, F 32.3]
Life expectancy at birth: 72.9 [M 71.8, F 74.0]
Adult literacy: 98.6% [M 98.4%, F 98.7%]

Government
Presidential and parliamentary with separate elections (as per France). Presidents do not stand along party lines, and while some parties do ally themselves with specific candidates they are not allowed to provide financial support.
The current President is Kenneth Wallace, who is generally seen as right-wing by the slightly left-leaning populace but is personally popular and praised for his liberal stance on social issues. The largest party in Parliament are the National Democrats; until recently they governed in an awkward coalition with the Capitalizt and Morality parties, who both led the party towards the authoritarian right against the wishes of many. Since then, key figures on the right of the Liberal Party have defected to form the new libertarian Freedom Party, with the remaining Liberal Party leaning centre-left on economics. An election has been called and campaigning is now under way. [OOC - result when I create a spreadsheet for this purpose]

Armed Forces
Weaponry used in the civil war has been seized by a unified national army, which exists primarily as a peacekeeping force. The constitution forbids unilateral action but the country may be open to providing assistance in multinational wars, although usually in a peacekeeping role. The army is well-equipped with guns and light armour and has high quality surveillance equipment but is very much deficient in air power.

Sport
Kura-Pelland competes on an international level in baseball and [as of World Cup 36] association football. (While most countries give the name 'football' to the code that is most played in that country, Kura-Pelland do not - hence association football is still called 'soccer', rugby football is referred to as 'rugby 13s' (for the League code) or 'rugby 15s' (for the Union code) and American football is referred to as 'gridiron'. All of these sports have a strong following in the country but soccer is the national sport as in so many countries. Other popular sports include curling, basketball, ice hockey, gymnastics, track and field athletics, dodgeball and speed skating. Besides soccer, most sports have traditionally held largely regional followings, though the unification of the nation (and by implication of television) is changing that and creating what is generally referred to as a sports boom.

Kura-Pelland's national outdoor stadium is the White Hope Stadium in Trilan, capacity 62,000 with extension possible.
