President Aiming For Second Term
President Mikheil Saakashvili is the first candidate to speak out since the start of the election campaign. In a speech outside the Parliament building in Ts’khinvali, he spoke of his aim to be the first President of South Osettia ever to win a second term in office.
“During my time in office, we have done some amazing things. We have made big steps along the road to full independence from Georgia, we have turned the economy around, and we are producing more wood chippings than any government ever before us. However, there is a lot more to be done. There is still plenty to fight for, and if you want someone to lead you in that fight, to be the first into the breach and the last out of it, to right the wrongs and to punish the wrong-doers, then you know what you have to do. You have to give us the opportunity to do these things, and do them well. You have to choose us to represent you. You have to vote for the National Movement.”
Current polls suggest that the National Movement are favourites to win the election, currently standing at 40%. The NDP are second on 32% of the vote, whilst the Labor Party head the rest of the pack with 21%. The surprise at the moment seems to be the Burjanadze-Democrats, who currently poll at 5%. The leader of the party, Nino Burjanadze, had this to say:
“We aren’t the favourites; we aren’t the second favourites. What we are is a party intent on making a difference, and if that means only getting one seat in Parliament, then so be it, for we will have as loud a voice as a party with 72 seats, and a party with 172 seats.”
The people of South Osettia have never been politically apathetic, but with the government recently lowering the voting age to 14, turnout is expected to be at an all-time high, with 87% of people asked saying they would vote in the next election. |
