NationStates Rule Changes

With the addition of the new telegram system and upcoming rule change that will allow recruitment telegrams in user-created nations including ours, I'm wondering if anyone else is concerned of a possible slippery slope situation?

As I said here, any recruitment telegrams I get between the time of the change and the time I'm able to opt-out of receiving such telegrams I'll simply delete, add senders to my ignore list if necessary, and will think less of whatever player/region sent me the TG.

More importantly, I see a larger issue: although the discussion thread on the NS Technical Forum has devolved to a name-calling-fest, recruiters have spoken out that they've had their own tools for years. As the game incorporates an "official" system, it's being implemented on a paid basis. Although they're not exactly saying user-created telegram-sending programs will continue to work, they're not saying they won't either.

Now, let's say that a month from now there's an announcement that they're building an official "NS World Sport Tournament" or other sports tournament simulation software into the game, declare that although the NS Sport forum isn't going away that the only "official" tournaments shall be run using that software (versus the community-driven/built host system using nsfs, xkoranate, etc.), to enter there will be a per-event entrance fee, and any sports tournament must be run through said software?

Despite all of this, even I know how much money I've paid to Max Barry or NationStates in general over the years: $0. I understand that this is a business decision and with business decisions it's not a question of "is this popular?" it's a question of "will we still have a loyal user base after implementing a (necessary)/unpopular change?"

Essentially, this has given me time to pause and think "under what circumstances might I leave NS for a reason other than RL (if necessary)?"

I don't see what all the fuss is about. People have been complaining about the TG system for *YEARS*

In order to expand the TG System, they need more storage space.

Storage space costs money.

So they (as announced or rumored often in the past year) are implementing a one-time pay for TG box increase feature. If you want more TG's saved, give them a few bux to pay for it, and you've got it.

It just seems like, during the development, the coder had a lot of neat 'ideas' to test out and the project grew some legs.

They aren't developing a whole bunch of other random crap and this is directly related to user complaints since day 1 of the game. If it took them 10+ years to implement a feature people have been begging for (sans the extras), I highly doubt we will see them start messing with completely unrelated things that have no complaints.

I really could care less about the TG changes as I don't have to pay anything to take advantage of the new features and can simply opt out to block the pay-for messages. And I'm not worried one iota about other pay-for systems trickling in either.

Opt-in makes absolutely no sense from the games standpoint and anyone arguing for opt-in is just looking at a self-centric point of view really. Everyone will get over the potential handful of new tg's they get in the few days before they log in and opt-out, and the new tg system features will be around far longer than the 2-3 unwarranted TG's they get on the first day will be.

I'm also not too worried about this, in part because I figure that the changes will mostly be a non-issue, save a potential increase in the number of ignores that I need to apply.

As for your other concern, I don't think we have to worry about that. Max has stated before, as part of the TG rollout, even, that he doesn't want the game to nickel-and-dime his users with all kinds of features, and I'd say that while there's potential that it could be an issue, I don't think that payments that allow for the end of ads and increasing TG functions reach that level, where an in-game sports simulator would. And I say that as someone who has supported the game indirectly - noting that the game was initially a marketing tool by Max to promote Jennifer Government.

I'm not worried about this change, as I believe that it was said that you would be able to opt-out of these recruitment telegrams before they went online, anyway.

I bought two copies of Jennifer Government for me and a friend, a site supporter account, and I also own Machine Man. Consumerism, ho!

In reply to pretty much every point 95X made in the OP:

I was reading through the first five or so pages of the new TG system discussion thread and that comic was in my head the entire time. I was so glad when I finally saw someone post it.

I really can't see this happening, how many posters in NSSports would be happy about this and not complain? How many would actually play?

And if they do do it then whats to stop us from doing it our way anyway?
