WOODSTOCK (ASP) -- A city weary of war threw up cheers of jubilation late in the night last night as the Sarzonian national team put the finishing touches on a dominating performance in the 16th Baptism of Fire Cup, beating Jonestan 3-0 in the Cup Final.

"This is just what we needed," Vice President for Health and Athletics Jimmy Marshall said as the television screens showed the Stars celebrating their first international championship. "This is the kind of thing that will lift spirits nationwide."

"Absolutely incredible," said Sarzonian Football Confederation commissioner Buddy Landry. "Four years ago, we were just trying to get a league started. Two years ago, we didn't even have a national team. They did us proud."

Landry said he didn't know if the Cup title would result in a spike in ticket sales for next year because he didn't have budget projections in front of him, but "just from circumstantial evidence, we're getting a lot more calls than we used to get."

Reports from team offices throughout the league indicated that season ticket sales were up 85 percent from last year, "and that was with a spike in interest after the AOCAF tournament," deputy commissioner Don Granick said. "We projected to break even in our sixth or seventh season, but we look like we're about to get in the black in the next two weeks if sales keep up this pace. And we might even be able to pay off all our creditors in two months if people keep buying national team merchandise."

President Mike Sarzo was unable to release an official statement because he had to attend a briefing shortly after the Cup Final, but he said after the match, "this is a phenomenal achievement for Sarzonia. It gives us something to be proud of." His voice was hoarse as he croaked those words. It was probably the biggest statement of the match as the First Fan seemed to be one of the most enthusiastic.

"I'm going to bring one of those foam fingers in with me to a Cabinet meeting," Senior Vice President for Internal Affairs Nicole Lewis said. "We played dumptruck on them!"
