Icicles Crush Ice Dragons
After losing 3-2 to Pacitalia in the first game, The Icicles were looking to make a statement to the rest of the division. A 4-0 win did just that- even if it came against the lowly Ice Dragons.
The Icicles started quickly with two first period goals from Elijah Apolo. It was apparent that the Icicles owned the Ice and would have little to fear from ASMV. Goalie Librada Lawhorne had a much better game collecting 22 saves. But Apolo was they big story. A goal late in the third period gave D&S their first hat trick of the season. Also making news was 15 year old Courtney Okazaki who scored in the 2nd period thus becoming the youngest D&S player to score in an international game.
So let’s recap. 4-0 win. Apolo hat trick. 15 year old scores. 22 saves. Pretty good day at the office.
Next up is a game with Hockey Canada. Hmmm. Only one prediction - we will not beat them 4-0. |

Ice Foxes open with victory over D&S; crush Hockey Canada in game 2
The Pacitalian hockey squad got off to an excellent start at the AOHC, downing Dorian and Sonya with a 3-2 victory. The Ice Foxes allowed the Icicles back into the game late but the opposition were unable to overcome the deficit. Antonio Finghulero, Valentino Sandruvali and Pado Castello scored for the Pacitalians in the first game.
Meanwhile, the Ice Foxes moved on confident and ready to go against the favoured Hockey Canadians. But they didn't let their underdog status faze them; in fact, it was a clear advantage for the Pacitalians as Chimano Tussoli, Mario Bellimangelo and Vincenti Labradorio scored while Roberto Fedomino earned a shutout in the Ice Foxes' 3-0 victory.

Krytenia Edges Flames; Liebskind and Co. Still Toughest Girls on Ice
After a ho-hum 0-0 tie vs. Lamoni, the Myrtannia Flames took the ice, sporting their white 'home' uniforms for the night's match with Krytenia. No one expected the Flames to have much of a chance in AOHC, with no official coach of the team even announced. Yet, the first period of the Krytenia match gave the Flames' faithful reason to believe that maybe... just maybe... the Flames could pull something out sometime down the road.
With gritty defensive play, the Flames held the as yet no-name Krytenian squad scoreless through the first period of play. An impressive feat against a team that won 7-5 in its first match. The potent Krytenian offense was stagnant for most of the match against Myrtannia, who played surprisingly well, and even got a few shots on the goal. The biggest highlights of the first period were hard checks by the Flames that drew loud cheers from the Myrtannian fans, and jeers from the rest of the crowd.
The second period was equally fruitless for Krytenia, as Myrtannia's defense held them scoreless once again. This time, though, the hard checks were accompanied by a strange occurance - a Flames goal. After one of Krytenia's defensemen was sent to the box for high-sticking, Myrtannia made use of the power play to press their advantage.
"We saw a rare opening, and decided to take it," said Marita Hamara, "Why not? Not like we'd gotten many chances before that."
The Krytenian goalie didn't know what hit him. Two flames forwards knocked down Krytenian defensemen, and Karissa Winarski took the puck right at the goal. It wasn't clear whether or not she was aiming for the goal, but she shot the puck at the general area of the goal. With such velocity, the puck struck not the goal, but the goalie himself, right in the head. On the rebound from striking the goalie's head, the puck went into the net, registering a goal for the Flames.
"I was just as surprised as anyone else... it was like, 'I scored? Okay then...'," Winarski explained with a shrug.
The rest of the period saw three penalties for fighting after a large brawl occurred between the Krytenians and Flames players. A standing ovation was given to Bonny Liebskind, Lyndsey Vellekamp, and Joycelen Burnstein, all of whom recieved penalty minutes for their parts in the battle.
In the third period, the game was decided not by a defensive lapse by the Flames, but by a lack of defenders altogether. During the period, every defensewoman in a Flames uniform recieved penalties for fighting, resulting in the ejections of Starla Lezak, Ami Riskin, Marilee Ginzel and Edie Smull. Alanna Gangell and Hortense Linders also recieved ejection for the same violation. The cause of most of the ejections was a huge on-ice brawl against the Krytenians after one of them foolishly threw a punch at Riskin. Several Flames players got off the bench to back up Riskin, and then more Krytenians jumped in, and hence the brawl. Myrtannia's fans ate it up, cheering as one by one, the Flames dropped the interfering Krytenians with roundhouse punches, low blows, and even a headbutt by Hortense Linders.
Without any defenders, and with Napoleon Beisser given time on ice as Corinna Schappach went onto the bench to sign autographs, the Flames couldn't hold the Krytenians back. In the last minute, the Krytenians scored twice to scavange a win. To a chorus of boos from the Myrtannian fans, the Krytenians left the ice with the victory. The Flames left the ice holding their heads high - they can defend well, and without the penalties, they probably would've held the Krytenians scoreless.
"Other people are going to say we're not taking this tournament seriously. Well, we're just having fun... if someone wants to pick a fight with us, we'll just have to show them why we're the toughest girls on ice," Edie Smull, former figure skater, said with a grin.
Next up for the Flames will be a match against Milchama, strangely called the Israelis for some reason. Milchama has scored 8 goals in its first two matches, both losses. Myrtannian defense held the Krytenians to 2 goals, and should be able to hold the Israelis to less than 3. Now that the Flames have a coach - Lamoni born Coral Burlson, backed up by assistants Lavon Yosko and retired Myrtannian women's heavyweight boxing champion Ok Westcote - which was just announced after the Krytenia debacle, the Flames might just have a little more discipline on the ice. A win over Milchama and a tie with Bettia might be enough to keep the Flames in the running for the second round.

Hawks get spanked 3-9
This would have to be the second worse lost in Lamonian sporting history (with the worst one being the loss to Starblaydia in the AOCAF XIV finals). Bettia outclassed, outmanned, and outperformed Lamoni. During the first period, it looked like Lamoni was in control of the game, scoring all three of it's goals. During the second and third periods however, Bettia came roaring back like a lion, scoring nine goals before the buzzer sounded, and besting both the starting and reserve goalies.
We realize that Bettia is one of the best hockey teams in the world, and we can at least take some solace in that fact. However, we do not see it as likely that Lamoni will make it to the next round in AOHC III. It would take a mathematical miracle to get us to the second round now, and then we have the feeling that we would be eliminated right off, anyway.

Which Way Did They Go, George?
Hockey Canada was treated to a very close call from the Icicles today. A scare nearly worthy of a heart-attack. With just one minute left to play in the third period, HC was on the verge of a 5-0 shellacking of D&S. That is when things went very wrong for the team from HC. All of them seemed to fall asleep at once, because the Icicles managed to score just 5 seconds before the final buzzer.
What else can we say? We actually scored on HC and denied them a shut out. Go Icicles! |

Mercy.
It's an interesting concept, mercy, wouldn't you agree? It's one of many that is taught to Bettia's children at an early age, along with other such essentials like tawhid, peace, goodness, love, charity...
Yes, mercy is a good thing - that is unless you're a budding Bettian ice hockey player looking to make a name for himself. On the evidence of their performances so far, Bettia's under-21s are taking a leaf out of their senior counterpart's book, ripping their hapless opponents to shreds - not literally of course, although thats mostly due to their arora mascot being kept on a very short leash. Yes, Trixie, son of the infamous Tiddles, is proving to be a fabulously intimidating good luck charm - perhaps it was the fact he had been given a girl's name that made him so nasty.
And that nastiness seems to be rubbing off on the players. Undoubted star of the show so far is centre Tegryn Devanallt, who has weighed in with eleven of Bettia's twenty-three goals so far. Yasin Caentwn is also proving to be a real handful, blitzing the left wing at every opportunity with Wyn Nantlais providing a constant goalscoring threat from the right. And at the back, Stuart Bapty is an immense prescence, so immense in fact that team boss Alun Ursell has often taken the netminder off and leave on his lonesome to mop up any loose pucks that come his way.
There has been a definate pattern to the team's play so far, one that could only be described as cruel. First up were Milchama, a team that made Bettia work hard. Much to the disappointment of the Bettian staff and fans alike, the Israelis had done a good job of keeping the Aroras at bay, going into the last period with a healthy three-goal lead. Cue a team-talk which could only be described as 'loud'. Whatever was said (most of which can't be broadcasted) certainly did the trick as the Aroras came a-roaring back with goals from Devanallt, Odey and Maskell, before Devanallt grabbed the winner with barely ten seconds left on the clock.
Next up were Lamoni, a nation with whom Bettia is on very good terms with, both politically and on the football field - unfortunately, that goodwill didn't seem to extend onto the rinks of Oliverry, as the Aroras callously put nine goals past them after allowing the Lamonians to race into the three-goal lead. Devanallt again led the way with a four-goal haul, with Caentwn weighing in with a brace, and Prosser, Morgan and Hayward chipping in with a goal apiece.
Bettian spirits were up and confidence was high, but no-one could have predicted the pitliess, almost arrogant way in which their next opponents Krytenia were dispatched. Once again, Bettia started slowly and Krytenia bossed the opening exchanges, going in front after seven minutes and soon adding a second. That was the tonking up the tushie that the Young Aroras On Ice needed, changing very noticably from first to sixth gear in a matter of seconds. 0-2 quickly became 2-2 going into the middle period, thanks to a lightning brace from Tegryn Devanallt, and after that Bettia's treatment of their hapless opponents became rather mean to say the least. Three more from Devanallt were soon followed by two from Morgan.
The third period saw Devanallt rested, allowing some of the other centres to take centre stage. Dougie Hayward made the most of his opportunity, scoring a superb solo effort after robbing Krytenia's centre from an icing restart. Main defenceman Bapty was getting noticably bored, and so he decided to surprise everyone by popping up in the middle to slam home a Maskell cross from the left. The last word was left to Jeff King, Maindy's young 16-year old starlet skillfully slotting home underneath the desparing Krytenia goaltender to send the Aroras into double-figures, not to mention the next round.
So where do Bettia's youngsters go from here? Next up are Myrtannia, who may be second from bottom and yet to register a win, but who certainly won't be underestimated as just like their football team, they started slowly but are improving as the tournament goes on.
What can we expect? A close hard-fought victory? A brutal massacre? Or a complacent defeat? One thing's for sure - just like their senior counterparts, the Young Aroras On Ice never fail to dish up drama by the bucketful!

It's obvious... somewhere along the line, their parents had done something spectacularly wrong. Why else would Bettia's Under-21s take such delight in crushing their opponents so ruthlessly? How else could they, who were once a bunch of starry-eyed little angels, turn out to be a bunch of complete bastards? Yep, definately the parents... it's either that or the adrenalin-rush that is international ice hockey has gone straight to their heads.
Not that we're complaining, nor are the throngs of Bettian supporters who have filled Oliverry's arenas to watch their young heroes in action, just as they did for their match against Myrtannia's Flames - unfortunately for the guys in blue and orange, it was they who got burnt. Well, actually that got bitten. Somehow (and don't ask me how), Trixie (Bettia's lovable but fierce arora mascot) somehow found his way into the Myrtannian men's dressing room where he proceeded to give most of their male playing staff a rather nasty bite on the derriere which seemed to impede their play, probably due to the fact that none of them could sit down on the bench all through the match.
Unlike their previous games, the Young Aroras On Ice wasted no time getting stuck into their opponents - not literally though. As far as this writer is aware, eating your opponents would probably constitute a major foul, although we can't find anything in the rulebook about this - luckily the Young Aroras had just eaten a hearty meal at the local fried chicken takeaway, and being good muslims they have no appetite for human flesh.
Bettia opened the scoring after just 47 seconds, as Tegryn Devanallt powered his way past two defenders to slot the puck past the netminder, giving him his twelth goal of the tournament. A steady succession of goals saw Bettia skate into the first break with a four-goal lead, Devanallt adding another to his tally along with Heath and Dakin.
The second period carried on where the first left off, with Devanallt bagging his hat-trick and Stuart Bapty scoring a quick brace. However, Bettia's cause wasn't helped when Bapty received a five-minute major for checking Jocelyn Bernstein from behind. No further goals were scored until the very last minute of this period as Bapty slotted in his third and Bettia's eighth just after returning to the ice.
The third period saw Bettia ease up a bit, with team boss Alun Ursell giving his fringe players the opportunity to impress. One who did so was 15-year old defenceman Eri Ansari, who capped a solid display as the Arora's lone defender with a well-taken goal of his goal, unleashing a belter from just inside the final third that Flames' tender Beisser was powerless to stop. Tegryn Devanallt capped a fine showing with a last minute goal to give the Aroras another double-figure display.
And so Bettia go into the second round with a collection of fearsome displays behind them - 4 games, 4 wins, and 33 goals scored. However, their next test is bound to be the hardest as they face the winners of Group One and hosts Oliverry. An equally tough test awaits them on matchday two in the shape of Hockey Canada, before they square off again with Krytenia and Lamoni, then finishing off against Bettia's perennial bogey team Pacitalia.
Can the Young Aroras On Ice succeed where their senior counterparts and football teams have failed, and beat the Foxes?
