Hoop Dragons Down Nedalia In Shootout
The AORBC kicked off today with four very close games, showing signs of being a great event. Vegans everywhere were excited as the most popular sport in the nation finally got to see some action on the regional scale
Al-Harim Memorial Colessium, Damascos Myrtannia.
With the blue and yellow of ASMV and the green and yellow of Nedalia filling the arena, the two teams tipped off with everything to prove. And the game proved to be a great one as niether team managed more than a seven point lead on the way to a 103-101 final score with the Hoop Dragons picking up their first win of the tourney.
The first quarter saw Nedalia take an early 25-22 lead as both teams showed a great shooting touch that would continue for the entir game. Halftime saw the score knotted at 51. A brilliant shot at the end of the third quarter saw Nedalia again take a three point lead at 77-74. But ASMV roared back in the fourth quarter to take the win 103-101 in the highest scoring game of Day 1.
The Hoop Dragons showed great depth as they put six players in double figures and nine players managed to break into the scoring collumn. SF Kendi Ayudan led the ASMV attack with 22 points and SG Nolan Garrigus added 18, including 5/6 from behind the arc. PF Robby Malla was a machine on the boards as he gathered in 19 rebounds and C Alvaro Nouri had a massive 5 blocked shots. PG Fidel Casano played the role of floor general, handing out 12 assists.

Myrtannians Shock Hawks At Buzzer
SKALATUR, Fergot - On the first day of action in the inagural Atlantian Oceania Regional Basketball Championship, roundball fans were treated to four exciting contests that show a promise of a strong tournament field. The main event, as far as most Myrtannian fans were concerned, however, took place at the Air Myrtannia Center in Skalatur. ASM's Nationals faced off against regional neighbor Lamoni in a contest fought hard on both sides.
Lamoni's red and blue were visible in the crowd at the Air Myrtannia Center, but the orange and navy of Myrtannia was also present in large numbers. As the game went on, the home crowd grew louder by the quarter. In the first, it was all Lamoni, as the Hawks jumped out to a 29-18 lead by the end of the quarter. Myrtannia stormed back to tie it at 36 in the second, only to see Lamoni retake the lead at 44-40 at the half.
The second half started badly for the Nationals as well - Lamoni started the quarter off with an 8-0 run that shot the score to 52-40 before Myrtannia got its act together. Lead by shooting guard Rahir Abdul, the Nationals rose from the ashes to tie it again by the end of the quarter at 70, and it was close from that point on. After a seesaw matchup in the fourth, a beautiful shot by the Hawks put Lamoni up 91-90 with 4.5 seconds remaining in the game.
After taking a full timeout to strategize, the Nationals inbounded the ball from half-court to the go-to guy Abdul. Releasing his shot just before the horn sounded to end the game, the whole arena watched tensely as the ball hurtled toward the basket. When the three went in, the Air Myrtannia Center erupted - the loudest this reporter has heard the arena at any time.
In addition to Abdul's 34 point, 6 assist performance, the Nationals had their moments on defense, including center Sebastian Walton (10 points, 10 rebs, 7 blocks), who stood a full foot taller than Lamoni's starting middle man Hugh Humber (6'2"). Strangely, Humber did manage to outscore Walton. It was an exciting start in the tournament for Myrtannia, who had to do a lot of scrapping to keep up with a strong Hawks team. "They're a great team," Myrtannia coach Salim Al-Hakim commented on Lamoni's squad, "This' just a minor setback for them; we got lucky tonight."
Next up for the Nationals (1-0) is a matchup with late entry Pacitalia (0-1) who should be another tough opponent for Myrtannia despite losing their opening game.

Hawks lose hard-fought game
The Hawks seemed to have the first AORBC game against Myrtannia in hand with 4.5 seconds left until the Nationals managed to score a three pointer that handed them the game with a 93-91 score.
In another display of his talent, Lamonian Hugh Humber managed to outscore his Myrtannian opponent, even though the Myrtannian was a foot taller. Hugh is well known to Lamonian basketball fans, managing to reach the Lamonian All Star Game in his rookie year (this being his second year in the LBA). Hugh will be a formidable player for the other nations to stop, and is already emerging as a leader, despite his inexperience.
In a related matter, a Lamonian referee will be in attendance at the Nationals next match. The referee, Clyde Huston; was invited to the match by the Myrtannian government, and will be sitting in a skybox along with some Myrtannian governmental officials. There have been numerous rumors about Clyde being more than a basketball referee, but none of them have been proven to this point.
At the end of the game, the Myrtannian coach had positive comments about the Lamonian team. "They're a great team, and this is just a minor setback for them; we (Myrtannia) got lucky tonight."

Hoop Dragons Slam Sarzonia
As Sarzonia won their AOCAF XXII title, no one in that country noticed that ASMV neatly sent them to the showers as 10 point losers today. But you can bet that every Vegan in the world noticed. Following the game, hundreds of fans stormed onto the floor in celebration. One excited fan had this to say : "They might be numbe one in the world in that grassy sport, but in here, They ain't s***!"
ASMV officials have sent an informal apology for that remark (and others more indecent) to Sarzonia. Word is that Presidente Commandante Viastormin Vega chuckled silently to himself while penning the apology, but those reports remain unconfirmed at this time.
Now for the game report.
The first half of the game was tightly contested although ASMV hit a 3 pointer to start things off and never trailed in the game. A 23-20 first quarter made way for a 47-45 halftime ASMV lead. In the third quarter, ASMV blew things open by outscoring Sarzonia 23-13. Sarzonia picked up their play in the 4th, but never really got close enough to be a threat. Final score - ASMV 94 Sarzonia 84.
Ayudan and Garrigus led the ASMV scoring again with 23 points apiece. 5 players again managed double figure scoring. Casano followed up a 12 assist outing against Nedalia with 13 more against Sarzonia. Rebound machine, Malla, collected 16 in the game, giving him a 35 rebound total for the two games thus far. And the big man inside, Nouri, recorded a triple double with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Nouri's 4 blocks bring his two-game total to nine, perhaps making him and Malla the most impressive frontcourt to this point.
Things are looking great thus far, but Ayudan put things in perspective. "We have looked really good. Noi one can deny that one. But we have played Nedalia and Sarzonia. Everyone knows football rules all else in those nations. We will have to see what happens when we run up against another hoops crazy nation."

Sharks First Two Games a Learning Experience
Khazaron shocked many people when it decided to send a team to the first ever Atlantian Oceania basketball championship. For awhile speculation ran as to how good the team would actually be, as Khazaronians were well known for being the odd-man-out when it came to the sporting activities of the region. Suprisingly enough, the Silver Sharks managed a close win over Sarzonia in the first round, going on to loose to the Nedalia Lions in the second one. When questioned, head coach Tristan Ulvec said; "Spirits where high after our win over Sarzonia, so when we went up against the Lions, we didn't bring as much vigor to the court as before. It was a poor mistake on our part and we paid for it. It shows just how much that extra effort can matter when it comes down to the score."
It appears as though all the pressure will be on the Sharks star-player, Shay Farley as they enter their third game.In the first game Farley managed to land two of 3-pointers in the last few minutes, helping to grab a win for the Sharks. Many fans are hoping Farley will bring some more of that magic he showed in the game again by landing a few more well placed 3-point shots when they face off against the Hoop Dragons tomorrow.
Critics are saying however that it isn't Farley, or any player for that matter, that the Sharks should be relying on, but that defense is the key to a victory. "There's no question about it." replied Coach Ulvec. "The Hoop Dragons are undefeated so far, and have shown a phenomanal offensive ability on the court. We'll be relying as much on our guards as we will on Farley. I think the key to victory over the Dragons lays in not relying to much on a pure offensive or defensive strategem, but in being able to adapt and flow in the new directions, to adapt like a river would to a stone."
Farley so far has managed a total of three 3-point shots, two against Sarzonia and one against the Lions. His point totals in each game where 25 and 20 respectively, with 12 and 8 rebounds as well. A close second to his prominent position in the team is Teddy Adelmar, who managed an impressive 18 points and 10 rebounds in the second game, when Farley had to be taken out in the third quarter due to a sprained ankle. Not to worry though Shark fans, doctors have cleared him to play by tomorrow's game. |

Hawks defeat northern neighbors
With a three pointer, a steal, and another three pointer, Lamoni managed to run the show for the last twenty seconds of it's second AORBC match; defeating Nojika 86-80. While Hugh Humber put up impressive numbers in the match, it was up to the Lamonian defense to set the tempo for this match; and what a job they did. Lamoni dominated the first two quarters, going to the locker room at the half up 40-30. Nojika came back in the third quarter with a massive second wind, but Lamoni held out until the last twenty seconds of the game. Whether the Nojikans were tired or not paying attention, we shall never know, but the steal that Hugh Humber made was one of the easiest that this commentator has ever seen.
Next up for Lamoni is Pacitalia. Lamoni has yet to meet this nation in any sporting event, so this next match should be fun. |

Nationals Fall Short Against Pacitalia
After an exciting start to the AORBC, the Myrtannia Nationals went into Monday's game against then 0-1 Pacitalia expecting to pull off another win. Overconfidence may have been a key factor as the Nationals surrendered a game-high 12 turnovers to the Pacitalian team. None of the scrappiness that helped upset Lamoni on day one was enough to overcome the resurgent opponent.
Myrtannia got off to a good start, taking a 16-8 lead in the first before falling flat on defense against Pacitalia. Once again, center Sebastian Walton had difficulty guarding his opponent, and was inconsistent at best this time around. While the Nationals kept up with their opponent with mostly solid play, they fell behind by eight in the fourth and never quite made it back. Despite the hussle of Rahir Abdul (26 points VS Pacitalia), the Nationals couldn't make it over the last hump and lost 102-98 to Pacitalia on day two.
On a side note, LBA referee Clyde Huston was seen seated near unidentified Myrtannian government officials during the match. It is believed that it was part of the efforts of the Myrtannian Basketball League (MBL) to secure a friendly exhibition between the MBL and LBA champions that has been a longstanding rumor in the Myrtannian press. Another possibility is that Mr. Huston has been approached by the Sporting Ministry to instruct the new class of Myrtannian referees, since the retirement of the Officiating Vocational School head within the past week.
Next up for the Nationals is a matchup with Nojika, who are coming off a close 86-80 loss to Lamoni on day two. |

The Nedalia Black Lions
A 103-101 loss to ASMV to start off the tournament brought little hope about the fate of the quickly assembled, semi-professional team that was sent to Myrtannia to compete in the first ever AORBC. Not unknown to the Nedalian public are the fights, debates, and squabbles between the Nedalian Basketball Federation and investors over the fate of the new basketball league which was supposed to started up a while back, and because of that, the fans have lost patience with the NBF over its handling. In fact, the nation's most talented players (save for Howard Treeton) quit the team after its not so bad showing in the NS Basketball World Cup (an event which Nedalia actually hosted, along with Sarzonia, a few years back) due to mismanagement. So the Black Lions were forced to assemble a team that has, after suffering that first loss, showed suprising spirit and heart.
Their last game was against co-hosting buddy and longtime friends Sarzonia, whom the Black Lions suprisingly defeated 96-89, to bring their record to 2-1. Although the victory was perhaps more about Sarzonia's failures (they have gone an unbelievable 0-3 in the tournament) than it was about the Black Lions' talents, credit has to be given where credit is due. Nedalia's most storied basketball player, shooting guard Howard Treeton, chipped in 22 points to go along with 3 boards and 3 assists, but Nedalia's player of the night had to be power forward Hoslus Bustos. The 6-10 savages scored 31 points to go along with his game high 16 rebounds, and managed to block a game high 4 shots to go along with his 12-14 FGs.
"Hussy (Hoslus Bustos) was tremendous tonight, the main factor in our victory really," commented coach Gerald Gemmis. "He was having an incosistent tournament, averaging only 12.5 points to go with 7.5 boards, but he really stepped it up tonight. We're looking for more performances like this from him; we need it."
Nedalia faces allies and tremendous friends Khazaron next; the Silver Sharks have done suprisingly well in their very first competitive sports tournament, and Nedalia would like to think they played a part in the participation of their friends. It is rumored that President Bren had a chat with the First Archon, telling him how exciting sport tournaments where, thus convincing the Khazaronian leader to join up a team. Currently, Nedalia, Khazaron, and ASMV are all tied for that first spot in Group A. President Bren might regret saying anything after its all said and done against the Silver Sharks. |

Hoop Dragons Lose 2OT Thriller
ASMV entered the game against Khazaron soaring on a 2 game win streak, and seemed to start as if they expected to be handed another win. Khazaron, on the other hand, came ready to play a nd jumped out to an early lead. By halftime it looked as if the Sharks would easily take home the victory.
But in the second half, The Hoop Dragons woke up. Garrigus and Nouri turned up the heat and ASMV made a massive run to get back into the game by the end of the 3rd quarter, only down by 6.
The fourth quarter looked as if ASMV would succeed in overtaking the now tired looking Sharks. Ayudan's 3 pointer with 21 seconds left tied the game. Nouri then blocked another shot and the Hoop Dragons raced down the court to slide out with a win. Garrigus' lay-up had different ideas and rolled off the front of the rim. A dejected ASMV team headed for OT.
Luckily, Khazaron wanted no part of the OT either. And sloppy play led to the game still being knotted as one of the Sharks missed a 3 pointer as the first OT expired.
Both teams managed to find a bit of energy for the 2nd OT. A couple of quick scores from on both ends gave way to tenacious defense. Khazaron went up by 2 points with 7 seconds left on the clock. A quick pass downcourt to reserve center Pechier looked to send the game to a third OT. But Pechier was fouled hard and missed the easy 4 footer as time expired.
Nothing can beat the pressure of standing on the line, time expired, and two foul shots that you need to hit to go to another OT. Pechier looked as if he was completely scared to death. And no one in the stands could really blame him. Here is the play by play
"Pechier steps up to the line. Here's the shot.... Nothing but net. This young man has to be relieved to see that one"
"Yeah, Bob. Ice water in his veins right now"
"Here's the second shot, this one to force a third OT... It's up... It rattles around the rim...still rolling around.....and out! No Good!!! Khazaron has one in a thriller!"

Hawks win again, tied for first
Lamoni staged a come from behind win in the fourth quarter of today's game, which left everyone watching it speechless. Lamoni went into the fourth quarter down 70-88. When the final buzzer sounded, the Hawks had won the match 94-88. No one is sure what caused the Lamonian 24-0 run, but we hope that it happens more often. Also unexplained is what happened to the Pacitalian offense in the fourth quarter. "It was like they weren't even there..." Hugh Humber was quoted as saying.
Next up for Lamoni is a rematch against host nation Myrtannia. Not only does Lamoni have a chance to make up for their earlier loss against Myrtannia, but a win would place Lamoni in sole possesion of first place in their division; which is an important consideration this far in. With the group stages of the AORBC halfway over, and the knockouts looming ever closer; the Hawks are right where they want to be. |

OT Unkind To Hoop Dragons Yet Again
Sarzonia entered the game with thoughts of revenge after the earlier defeat at the hands of ASMV. It took OT, but the Stars got that revenge 103-101. Garrigus and Ayudan again led the ASMV attack, combining for 69 of the teams 101 points. Nouri added 15 of his own. Casano again reached doudle digit assists with 11, and Malla continued his assault on the boards with massive 23 in this one.
Averaging nearly 103 points per game, the Hoop Dragons are the most exiting team to watch in the competition. Add to that the fact that they are allowing 100 points per game as well, and you have the makings for very exciting games. Now if we can just avoid OT..............
Next up - The Silver Sharks of Khazaron who handed the Hoop Dragons a 111-110 2OT defeat in the first game. Should be another great one to watch.

Sharks Getting Ready for Round Two
The scene at the Air Myrtannia Center was tense as half of the players for Khazaron's Silver Sharks ran suicides up and down the court. Nearby, the other half busied themselves by running through passing drills until several of the players began to complain of muscle cramps and exhaustion. This did not sway Coach Tristan Ulvec, who oversaw the whole operation from the bench area, a determined look on his face.
Having just come off a narrow defeat to the Black Lions of Nedalia, and having a game scheduled tomorrow against the Hoop Dragons, whom they barely beat in OT, made the whole atmosphere for the team rather tense. "We need to really focus and get to know this court as intimately as possible." said Assitant Coach Kenny Laris. "When we face off against the Hoop Dragons again tomorrow, we'll need every advantage we can think of." On a more cheerful note however, there was a tremendous show of sportsmanship between the Nedalian and Khazaronian teams as they shoke hands and congratulated each other on a well fought game, once it was all over.
Perhaps the greatest concern to the Sharks currently though is the detoriating health of their star player's right knee. During the fourth quarter against the Lions, Shay Farley managed to re-aggrivate his pulled muscle while attempting a 3-point shot to even the score. With only one minute left in the game, Farley had to be taken out when it was realized the injury was to serious for him to keep playing. All hope now appear to be on his backup, Teddy Adelmar, who will be starting in the game against the Hoop Dragons. "We've had him checked out by our doctors and they seem to think they he'd be ok for a short while on the court, but any long-term strain on the court could put him in serious danger." said Coach Laris. "Right now the plan is to keep him off that foot unless we really need him."
It's been obvious to many fans that given the heated contest of skill in their last match against the Dragons, that tomorrow's game may very well be another close one, even with the preparation Coach Ulvec is trying to instill in his team. Many have been wondering what, or more precisely whom, is considered to be the greatest threat to the Sharks defense. "That would have to be the twin terrors Garrigus and Ayudan, Garrigus especially. Those guys are like greased demons on the court, once they get in the zone, there seems to be no stoping them. We're also on the lookout against Nouri, who managed an impressive number of points against us in our first encounter."
As for the statistics of the Sharks themselves, once again Farley managed to achieve the highest total with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Right behind him was Amando Gurit with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Finally, Avery Bran managed 15 points and 8 rebounds. It is speculated amongst fans that had Adelmar been in the game for more than just the last minute of it, he would have become a close second to Farley in points.
Will the Sharks manage to slay the Dragons a second time? Make sure to show up early to get good seats so you can see for yourself. |

Victory is sweet
Lamoni now stands alone in the first place rank of group 2 in the AORBC with a 96-86 victory over hosts Myrtannia. This game went a lot more smoothly for the Hawks than did the first match against the National's. Hugh Humber managed to have a very productive game by himself, with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists. Lamoni is highly favored to win it's next two matches against Pacitalia and Nojika; which will put the Hawks in an excellent position for the knockouts. This is also a very high point for Lamonian athletics after the third place finish in the AOCAF many years ago.
The last time that the Hawks faced Pacitalia, Lamoni won 94-88. We expect that this next match will be closer, but Lamoni should still win. Time will tell, however. |

Nationals lose to Hawks; Myrtannia On the Ropes
For the second time in the AORBC, defensive lapses doomed the Myrtannia Nationals as they played a rematch of Day One's upset victory against Lamoni. This time the Hawks came out meaning business, and the Nationals never quite kept up. After allowing the Hawks to go up by 12 early on, Rahir Abdul lead a brief rally that saw the lead shrink to 4, but Lamoni continued to coast along undeterred.
Center Sebastian Walton went down with an as-yet undetermined ankle injury, after allowing Lamonian Hugh Humber to dominate on both sides of the ball. The Hawks' center's talent continued to shine despite a strong effort by Ghraham Ryall on defense. "He is one amazing player - zips right past you before you realize he was there in the first place," Ryall said after the game. Coach Al-Hakim offered a more direct observation, "That kid is downright scary. He might be the most dangerous guy in this tournament."
The total damage after all was said an done: Lamoni 96, Myrtannia 86. At 2-2, the Nationals are now vying for one of the two 'wild card' spots in the semi-finals. Two wins would secure a spot, but nothing is gauranteed at this juncture. "Who knows? Sarzonia beat ASMV, so anything can happen," said Myrtannian women's player Otylia Stone.
Speaking of the women's team, the AORBC panel announced today that the previously cancelled women's division will be changed to a one-game playoff to determine regional champion between the two nations who sent squads. The title game in women's roundball - the Myrtannia Dryads VS ASMV Lady Dragons - will take place at the Air Myrtannia Center in Skalatur on the same day as the third place game. |
