Return Of The Peril

Brian Cahill reporting from Mari City, Myrtannia.

There was a reason that everyone associated with the Hypocrian national side were absolutely delighted to have secured top spot in Group B before the Starblaydia game. Namely that, despite their awful form, the Men in Mauve are the top ranked side in the region and can beat any opposition that dares to stand against them. As they proved on a balmy evening at Mari City Park, coming from behind to triumph in a seven goal thriller.

It was a match that highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of both nations. Starblaydia, the best in the region, AOCAF doyens, ripped into the Hyppos but at times showed a huge amount of nerves. While Hypocria showed both the fluid attacking play that they do so well and the fragile defensive qualities that has cost them so often in the past.

In the early stages of the game the purple clad players looked a bundle of nerves, perhaps considering the reaction back in Jhanna should they lose yet again. With such thoughts weighing on the mind is it any wonder the decision making sometimes suffers? Such as when young fallback Fain Ugrubolgdam played a blind back pass intended for his keeper. Unfortunately for him Alex Sousa, a thorn in Starblaydi sides four years ago, was lurking and intercepted the pass before driving into the box and drilling a low shot past the horrendously exposed Balin Grimzabar.

A mistake may have gifted the Hyppos’ their opener but there was little the Men in Mauve could do about the second. Sousa again made a nuisance of himself down the left hand side. Ugrubolgdam slide in hard but the ball ran to Razin who swung in a cross. Costello got his head to the ball but it fell to Vardanyan, coming in from the right. He controlled it on his chest before hitting a dipping volley into the top left hand corner of Grimzaber’s goal. It was an excellent strike, one that brought everyone on the bench to their feet and prompt loud choruses of “Are you 95X in disguise?” from the blue and white army. It doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue but if got the message across.

Unfortunately it seemed to spark the opposition into life and, with time ticking away before the interval, the Starblaydi number 8 Yuri Janizak robbed Bassano in the centre of the park and drove a beautifully weighted through ball that bisected Drago and Ocella. Cruz was onto it in a flash and as Lomaia raced out to face him the Vecchio Victors striker simply clipped the ball over the veteran keeper and into the back of the net. The halftime whistle blew and the deficit halving Starblaydi goal gave both coaches plenty to think about at the break.

Twelve minutes into the second half the tournament’s top seeds looked dead and buried. Sousa’s snap shot had forced a good save from the ‘Blaydis Dwarfish keeper who turned it round a post. Razin drilled the corner in and Victor Morinas, who had been highlighted as a threat by the Starblaydi media prior to the competition’s kickoff, rose highest to power home a header. 3 - 1 and surely game over. Or not, as the Purple Peril finally arrived.

With seventy two minutes on the clock Ramirez found Cruz on the edge of the box and the young forward hit a low drive which took a nasty deflection off Ocella and wrong footed the keeper to help the ball nestle over the goal line. It was obvious to everyone watching that the tide was turning as the Men in Mauve were first to every loose ball and won every 50/50 challenge. And on eighty one a deserved equaliser went in. Prizzoni swung in a corner right into the mix, the defence failed to clear and Charles Barron stabbed the ball through the crowd and over the line.

The five time champions had pulled back from the brink to level but they weren’t going to settle with just a point. A minute into stoppage time Prizzoni went down easily on the right under the challenge of Teale. The referee gave the freekick despite the protestations. The Starblaydi captain Di Bradini, seeing the Hyppos’ defending far too deep, hit an inswinger right on top of the keeper. Lomaia, blocked by his own defenders, couldn’t claim it and the head of Ruiz got the telling touch to complete an excellent fight back.

Hypocria 3 - 4 Starblaydia
Sousa
Vardanyan
Morinas

Despite their win Atlantian Oceania’s number one side could only qualify for the Second Round in fourth place in Group B after Milchama beat 95X 1 - 0 to secure third.

Into The Lion’s Den

You’d think that finishing top of the group would guarantee an easier fixture in the Second Round. Three time runner’s up Nedalia is not our idea of an “easy” fixture. In fact a Verdana derby against possibly your biggest rival is the very last thing you’d want in the second round. The two nations built up a fierce rivalry and fought out some classics at Under-21 level but matches at this level are relatively rare. In fact the sides have only met once before in the AOCAF, eight years ago in Lamoni. Encouragingly that too was a Second Round tie and the Hyppos’ came through 2 - 0.

The Lions, much like the Purple Peril, are performing a helluva long way below what they should be with just one win from their group games. But again like the ’Blaydis they’re more than capable of beating anyone when they’re in the mood.

Around The Round

AOCAF fans rejoice. Football fans in general rejoice. The Second Round draw in Myrtannia has thrown up some mouth-watering games, some of which wouldn’t look out of place as the Final itself. So in true band wagon fashion here are our predictions . . .

Myrtannia (9) v Aurendia (13)
The hosts already had an excellent home record in other sports events prior to the AOCAF and that form has continued into football. Four wins in four, the best record in qualifying, saw the Dryads dominate Group A ahead of former champions Bettia. Aurendia were rather more hit and miss in Group D but the Raptors did manage a win over Vilita/Turori on the opening day. Sadly the opening day was a while ago.
Verdict: Five out of five for the Dryads.

Bettia (4) v Vilita/Turori (2)
Aside from a slip up against the hosts the Arora’s had few problems negotiating Group A. V/T were slightly more erratic and surprisingly finished below both Pacitalia and Nojika in Group D. This tie is far too good for the Second Round with both nations having held the AOCAF title in the past and both still ranked in the region’s top 4. V/T are hoping Bettia will see red but the Aroras have got the firepower to down the men from the Tropics.
Verdict: Bettia getting better.

Pacitalia (5) v Delesa (23)
Easily the most one-sided tie on paper with 18 ranking places between the nations. The Blue Foxes won three and drew one of there group games to top Group D while Delesa managed just one win and scrapped through Group A courtesy of being slightly better than Quakmybush. Forget about it, no upset here folks.
Verdict: It may as well be a bye.

Nojika (15) v The Lowland Clans (10)
More than once in the past we’ve tipped Nojika to achieve something in the AOCAF and they’ve not even come close. Now it looks like the Panther’s have finally got themselves together and second place in a tricky looking Group D is testimony to that. TLC have a similarly unimpressive record in past tournaments and a win over Delesa was a rare high point in qualifying. Nojika may never have a better chance of advancing.
Verdict: Panthers pounce.

Lamoni (3) v Starblaydia (1)
The reigning champions against the number one seeds. Third in the region against first. One of the biggest games in AO. What is this match doing in this round? The Hawks are in good form while the Men in Muave, well, aren’t. But Lamoni have a truly terrible record against it’s eastern rival with just one win in past competitions. And you know the Purple Peril would just love to end Lamonian dreams.
Verdict: No idea quite honestly.

Bazalonia (11) v Milchama (12)
Lahar will host a game between two nations who will both fancy there chances of advancing. Neither side has much of a pedigree in past editions of the AOCAF and both come into the Second Round with almost identical records. But the Warrior’s are still messing around with that bloody horse so if there’s any justice they’ll be on a flight home pretty soon.
Verdict: The circus is finally leaving town.

Hypocria (7) v Nedalia (8)
Another blood and thunder Verdana derby between two closely matched sides. Ranking, current form and the foreign media all favour the Hyppos. So why are we still terrified?
Verdict: It won’t be 0 - 0.

Demot (17) v Az-cz (20)
At the start of the tournament you probably wouldn’t have tipped either of these sides to make the quarters. But one of them is going to get there. Both sides only lost a single game in qualifying but Demot managed two wins to Az-cz’s one. And we know first hand how impressive the Dynamos looked in Group B. Tough call but Demot might just edge it.
Verdict: Az-cz gnomeward bound.

From the desk of Noz-Tf

C isn't for capitalization

We would like to remind the other nations of Atlantian Oceania that the "c" in Az-cz is not capatalized but rather written in lower case. In reading through many of the predictions from foreign nations we have noticed a great amount of confusion about this issue. Even are hosts seem to be messing it up. However we would like to take the time to thank Hypocria for their dilligence and care in maintaining proper capitalization. We realize that it is confusing as most individual names, and names of other places are double captialized, but the country's name is not. We appreciate your time and understanding.

And what would the Round of 16 be without the "Original Unpaid Intern Predictions" from the Sports department of the Halosen News-Times?

Demot vs Az-cz

Demot made a surprisingly strong showing in a tough Group B, in which they won two matches en route to second in the group. The Dynamos are looking strong going into the knockouts, and could be very dangerous if they keep up the same level of play they've shown so far. As far as the Gnomes go, Az-cz has played pretty well too, making the knockouts despite predictions earlier that they might take a wooden spoon at the end of the group stage. They didn't.. yet. But the Dynamos will be happy to give it to them now.

Our line: Demot sends Az-cz packing, 2-1.

Pacitalia vs Delesa

After a rocky group stage, Delesa have still at last recieved a knockout birth by virtue of being better than Quakmybush. That's where their luck runs out. Pacitalia's Blue Foxes won Group D against some stiff competition, their only non-win being a draw with Nojika (who finished second in the group). We don't know anyone who thinks Delesa can win this one.

Our line: Blue Foxes roll, 3-0.

Bazalonia v Milchama

The Bazacubs have been resurgent this AOCAF, finishing second in their group and getting strong positioning for the Round of 16. Their opponents from Milchama also did surprisingly well, finishing above Starblaydia in third place. Milchama's 3-2 win over the Purple Peril was a shocker to be sure, but are they really good enough to produce in the knockouts? Bazalonia would certainly like to get through to the Quarters, and Milchama's horses won't stop them.

Our line: Bazacubs send Milchama to the glue factory, 2-0.

Hypocria v Nedalia

This is one of those matchups that looks tantalizing on paper, but ultimately won't live up to its billing. Despite a top ten ranking, the Lions haven't done a whole lot for themselves so far, most recently being throttled 0-4 by Lamoni. Hypocria, on the other hand, have been very dominant in their group, just narrowly losing to a surging Starblaydi team on Day Five. Unless you're a Hypo fan, there won't be much to watch in this match.

Our line: Hypos bowl over bumbling Lions, 4-1.

Bettia v Vilita & Turori

Ah, a real thriller on paper that won't end up being extremely one-sided. Bettia's only blemish was a close loss to the host nation, and the Young 'Uns will be looking to overcome another team in red this time. V&T have made the Final in each of the past two AOCAFs, but stumbled out of the gate in Group D. While not as bad in the final standings as Starblaydia, V&T will have to have more than just the brilliant Kristopher Kilpter going for them to overcome the Bettian charge.

Our line: Kilpter isn't enough this time as Young 'Uns move on, 3-2.

Lamoni v Starblaydia

Our pick for match of the round. Lamoni are coming off a pair of highs - winning their first AOCAF cup four years ago, and winning their group this time around fairly easily. Starblaydia have been in a funk, it seems, losing their first two matches before something clicked - they haven't lost since. The Purple Peril could well be back in form to stay after an impressive 4-3 win over Hypocria on Day Five. Lamoni, on the other hand, might be a little complacent after having such an easy time against faltering Nedalia. We don't think that's the case, though. Expect a very tough match.

Our line: Not sure, it'll be decided by one goal - one play could tip the balance here. Right now, we'll be cautiouslly optimistic about picking Lamoni, 1-0.

Nojika vs TLC

TLC have struggled again in AOCAF play, finishing third in Group A, better than only Delesa and Quakmybush. Nojika, on the other hand, have looked very good in their first truly engaged AOCAF in a very long time. Plenty of people like the Clans to win this one, possibly because of their political leanings. Reality suggests that the Panthers' time has come.

Our line: Panthers finally advance, 3-1.

James Gaines had recovered to the point where he could go around places in a wheelchair, and was certainly the bane of the nurses in the Bazalonian hospital now that he had been relocated back to Bazalonia. Infact James was very stubborn as a you might expect and demanded to go to the BFSA headquarters... What he found was Andrew Coulter in an office that actually seemed ordered. Of course they received advanced warning from the Nurses so that they could ensure that they had things just incase James needed them.

"So how are the Bazacubs going in Myrtannia, mate?" asked James

"Good, they've made it into the Ro16 and just beat Milchama, they next face the Blue foxes in the quarters."

James nodded, "I want to talk to them, can you get the coach on the phone? who is their coach anyway?"

"Umm.. not sure. But I will be glad to get them on the phone." sadi Andrew he looked arounbd for the hpone before realising it was just infront of him and to his right. Andrew coulter picked up the handset and dialed the number for the hotel in Mrytannia where the Bazacubs where staying.

"Hello?"

"Ah, coach glad I caught you."

"Yeah."

"uhuh.."

"righto then, James' here and he wants to talk with you guys.... Do you have a speaker phone?"

"Alright, alright here he is." said Andrew passing on the phone to James.

"So how do you reckon you'll do against the Blue foxes?"

"Uhuh..... yep... Really?"

"Okay.."

"I'd be glad to, tell them to look after their bones and their bones will look after them."

"I better go.. Tell the team 'Good luck and I know you can do it.'"

"Yep, no.. okay then Bye..."

and with that James hung up the phone.

"So....?" Andrew prompted

"Oh nothing, I think we'll have a chance against the Blue Foxes and the teams is very glad to hear that I am alright. maybe we could get to the Semi's, we'd probably face the Myrtannians if we did though."

"So anything else you want to do while you are here?" asked Andrew... James shook his head "nope that's really... oh wait I wanted to say something to my.. I mean your secretary."

She came up and said.. "Don't worry... I'll be back soon" almost more of a whisper than anything else.

And so they left JAmes and the medical entourage annd went back to the hospital now that he satisfied that things where at least sort of running.

Purple Peril Blunted

If Starblaydia thought that that sixth AOCAF title was elusive before this match, it got even more elusive now. The Hawks dealt a major blow to the Starblaydi ego with a 3-0 PK win, after a 1-1 regulation; and 0-0 extra time showdown. While the Starblaydi ego took a hit, Lamoni now has a much better chance of repeating their title win of AOCAF XVII. The Hawks face neighbors Nojika next, and the more radical Lamonian bookies are calling it an "Easy Lamonian win."

The Hawks know better than to discount anyone, however; especially in the knockouts. We defeated two teams (Bettia and Starblaydia, AOCAF XVII) that the 'experts' said that we couldn't defeat in a million years. The Nojikan Panthers have shown good form, getting farther in AOCAF XVIII than they have for quite a long time. Meanwhile, the Hawks (with the exception of the draw against Az-cz) went through their group like a hot knife through butter. Even better for Lamoni, the Hawks have a positive record against the Nojikan Panthers.

The match against Starblaydia was no picnic, however. Lamoni came out early determined to dominate the intensity of the match; scoring in the first minute (Drugah Farani) by aggressive ball handling. The Men in Muave didn't get that many chances to even look at the Lamonian net, and their only goal of the match came at eighty nine minutes in (Charles Barron). The final whistle sounded, and the match was tied at 1-1. The entire Extra Time period boiled down to Lamoni's defense blunting Starblaydia's offense, and vice-versa. Still tied at 1-1, the match went into the penalty kick phase. Lamonian Team Captain Drugah Farani scored with a shot to the upper left of the Starblaydi net. His Starblaydi opponent's shot was blocked by the Hawks keeper. This would happen twice more; giving the Hawks their second straight victory over the Men in Muave; and significantly denting the Starblaydi AOCAF ego. This represents the first time in a long time that the Purple Peril has failed to make it to at least the Semi-Finals. Are they on the wane? No one seems to know.

Lamoni - 4 Drugah Farani (1, PK) , Zan Quest (PK) , Kellin Schmidt (PK)

Starblaydia - 1 Charles Barron (89)

Time for the QF Predictions

Marvin Godlevsky
Nephi Times
Halosen, Myrtannia

Our team of unpaid interns have returned to offer their Quarter Final predictions for AOCAF XVIII:

Myrtannia vs Demot

Myrtannia is on fire here on it's own turf, and we would be surprised if they lost to a Demot team that is in fairly good form.

Pacitalia vs Bazalonia

Pacitalia should win this one, but there is a 1 in 4 chance that Bazalonia could pull off an upset here.

Hypocria vs V/T

The steamrollers of AOCAF XVI against the team that we defeated in order to win the cup in AOCAF XVII. Hypocria is in better form, and we think that this might translate into another number to add to the Hypocrian win column.

Lamoni vs Nojika

Us against our Northern Neighbors. We have the better ranking, the *MUCH* better KPB, and the better form. So... why do we still have a lingering doubt? Lamoni wins.

Caffoso, Zlotnik Beat Raptors; Dynamos Up Next

MARI CITY - It didn't look like a close matchup on paper, did it? Myrtannia, the unbeaten champions of Group A as well as the host nation of the AOCAF, against Aurendia, fourth place in Group D. But Aurendia, lest we forget, did upset AOCAF XVII finalist Vilita & Turori on opening day. If they could resurrect that level of play for the knockouts, things would be much more interesting at Mari City Park.

Things did seem more somber in the Dryads locker room before the match, as Coach Zentrescu gave a pre-game strategy talk. No details came out, but the team in white kits with blue and orange trim looked very serious as they made their way onto the pitch. Despite a huge roar from their support section - which was a slight majority of people in the stadium - the Dryads merely nodded or waved before refocusing on the task at hand.

One question that had been asked in countless papers, chatrooms, etc. in Myrtannia was whether the pressure to produce at home would catch up to the Dryads eventually. It almost looked like it on Day One, and it could have happened against Bettia on Day Five. Yet so far, Myrtannia's team had persevered.

But Aurendia was neither Quakmybush or Bettia. The Raptors, who won twice en route to their knockout berth, seemed just as focused on not putting out another sub-par effort on the pitch. With the stage set, the opening gun began the Dryads' first Round of 16 game since an extra-time victory over ASMV eight years ago in Lamoni.

From the start, both teams tried to assert their dominance on the pitch. This resulted in the sort of back-and-forth battle that Myrtannian football fans are used to seeing by now. First the Dryads would attack, then the Raptors would make the save and counter attack, and vice versa. Both sides' keepers were kept busy as Myrtannia and Aurendia combined for a large number of attempts on goals. The collection of near-misses caused many 'ooos' and 'aaahs' from the assembled supporters.

The play of the keepers - Rosario Zlotnik (Myrtannia) and Kevin Sullivan (Aurendia) - was so good that there was talk in the stands of both being candidates for Man of the Match. Men of the Match, more like it. At the half, neither keeper had allowed the ball to slip past, and it was tied at 0-0.

"As we expected, Aurendia's really stepping up to the plate today. That just means we're going to have to push back a bit harder to send them home," assistant coach Tocarra Khat expressed.

Much of the second half mirrored the type of action seen in the first - back and forth as both teams tried to take control with one shot of the ball. Time went by fast as neither the Dryads nor the Raptors could quite get a shot in. But, as we always see in crucial matches like this, something had to give. One team would have to begin tiring at some point. Unfortunately for the visitors, it was the Raptors that showed their fatigue first.

After another stint of playing back for a defensive stand, the Dryads switched to the attack again with ten minutes remaining. Everything looked promising from the beginning - the Aurendians were caught out of position, and the sudden blitz seemed to overwhelm them. It started with Marti Gabeline intercepting a pass intended for Raptors striker Ashley Campbell. Gabeline then passed it out to the right, where Jettie Cassetty was waiting.

Cassetty pushed forward, then found the veteran Dania Figary positioning herself at the top of the penalty box. A pass later, Figary had the ball, cut left, and then faked a shot at goal and passed it back to a waiting Sheron Caffoso. Caffoso, with a straight look at the goal, pushed forward a couple steps, then ripped off a shot into the upper right corner. This time it went past Sullivan, and Myrtannia was up 1-0. That would be all that was needed, offensively speaking.

The rest of the match was back to playing defense as best they could, and preventing a late Aurendia equaliser. When the final horn sounded, there was some pumping of fists in the air, but no huge celebration. On to the Quarterfinals.

After shaking hands with the Raptors players to congratulate them on making it this far, and for a good match, the Dryads headed back to their lockers for the post match meeting with the coaching staff. Zentrescu once again discussed strategy with them, what worked and what didn't against Aurendia, and then a preview of their next opponents: Demot.

"Demot has an excellent side this AOCAF, one that's done very well for itself. With more experience, I can see them becoming a contender a few AOCAFs from now," team captain Figary expressed, "They've got a lot of potential."

The Dynamos are through to the Quarts after defeating Az-cz to the tune of 3-2 in the Round of 16. It could be a very interesting match between the up and coming Demot side, and a Myrtannia side that's only just begun to realize its potential contender status in the past couple AOCAFs. Both nations should be at the top of their games, so expect an entertaining match at Skalatur International.

Elsewhere, the Round of 16 generally panned out as expected, with Pacitalia, Bazalonia, Hypocria, and Nojika all advancing. Lamoni edged out Starblaydia in penalties, leading us to wonder what's happened to the now eerily silent Men in Muave. Vilita & Turori continued their impressive turnaround with a 4-2 win over Bettia that sets them up with a Quarterfinal match against Hypocria. Plenty of interesting matches to watch in the Quarterfinals, and AIR 4 has announced they will broadcast each one, though some will be time-delayed for UIM broadcasts.

The final from Mari City Park:

Myrtannia 1 - 0 Aurendia

Panthers Advance to AOCAF Quarter Finals
For the first time in their history, Nojika have advanced to the quarter finals

SKALATUR, MYTRANNIA
-- Reports of the death of Nojika’s quarter final chances, have, as it would seem, been somewhat exaggerated.

Media outlets around the region still maintain strong doubts about Jerrel Alson’s ability to get the very best out his talented ‘golden generation’ when an early own goal from central defender Leonardo Roering sent The Clans’ fans into a frenzy.

However, with a victory underpinned by the creativity of star winger Antoine Billet and brought to fruition by the finishing power of Preston Greeves and national captain Robbie Hedeen, Nojika continues its campaign to AOCAF glory.

Their 2-1 victory ensured they would advance to the quarter finals, something that has proved elusive in prior competitions, and seemed impossible after a devastating defeat at the hands of Vilita & Turori on the second match day of the group stage.

Once again, Alson was indebted to Greeves, whose 5th goal for his country fired Nojika to equal terms early in the second half. Then again, they wouldn’t have needed to equalize if it weren’t for a defensive lapse after thirteen minutes that sent a back pass from Leonardo Roering into his own net. However, Nojika came again and Panther captain Hedeen proved his growing influence as he hit the winner with nine minutes left.

Alson was given signs of encouragement by the deployment of Dylan Vanes into a holding role -- allowing Adldo Samec to roam forward more feely.

Once again, Billet was at the center of all of Nojika’s best moves, underlining his pivotal role in the side. While he struck one free-kick wide and Hedeen and the increasingly confident Rudy Greeves, the best early chance fell to Vanes, whose control let him down. But despite some early misplaced passes, Vanes’ tackling ability came to Nojika’s rescue on several occasions in his experimental role as a holding midfielder.

When Billet gave the ball away, he was quickly across to dispossess the Clans’ attacker, while he also produced an excellent interception just as a Clans’ striker was poised to shoot. Still, it was Billet who was the Panthers’ creative force and one wonderful turn left his marker dazed and confused as he fired a shot that flew narrowly over the goal.

Not that Nojika played at their absolute best, but they seized the equalizer on 50 minutes when Billet’s corner fell to Preston Greeves on the edge of the penalty area and instinctively sent his shot into the far corner, out of reach of the opposing goal keeper.

The goal was the cue for Nojika to step up the pressure, but it was the right winger from the Clans that opened up the defense before crossing for unmarked Clans forward to strike his volley to goal, but Potempa’s quick reactions and anticipation saved the Panthers from going down again. Jarrett Betance’s crossing was just as impressive when he produced one pinpoint delivery for Rudy Greeves, whose header was well saved by the Clans’ keeper.

The Nojikan fans were clearly becoming frustrated with their teams’ slow build up, urging them to speed up their temp, a style that suits them much better.

The Lowland Clans’ keeper pulled off two more spectacular saves, one from Billet and another to deny a curling shot from Samec, but finally, the breakthrough came with nine minutes left. The Panthers poured through the midfield and when Vanes sent an inviting ball forward to Hedeen, he thrashed his volley into the net.

Alson moved swiftly to reinforce his midfield with Emmett Assad and Wes Derenberger, and victory was dully achieved. So to was their advancement into the quarter finals.

Nojika: 2 - 1 :The Lowland Clans
(P. Greeves 50’, Hedeen 81’) - (OG Roering 13’)

Precision play, lopsided matchup helps Blue Foxes back into the quarterfinals
Pacitalia downs Delesa for the second time in as many historical contests; Raduvani earns clean sheet

BLACKHEART, MYRTANNIA (PSN)
-- The Blue Foxes were riding high after earning some revenge over the Jungle Cats on the final day of the group stage, doubling up Vilita and Turori by a final score of 4-2. But for interim manager Sergei Saganyarov and his Pacitalians it was time to channel that elation and positive energy into confidence in the round of sixteen, and thus, a win.

Before the match, Saganyarov touched on the past failures of the Blue Foxes. "I know this team has had a knack for coming up just short, but don't fault them for it. Rather, we should look back and see how much this squad has learned from its mistakes in the past, how much it has learned in regards to the effort needed to pull all the way through to the final. As long as we concentrate and work as a team out there I see no reason why it can't be our year to win this."

Happy though the Blue Foxes were at running full-tilt through the group stage, capturing three wins and a draw and remaining unbeaten, they seemed to be unable to concentrate that confidence from the previous match into confidence for the match at hand. Like the Myrtannians before them, they entered the pitch area not with smiles on their faces or any mass acknowledgement of the crowd's support, but merely anxious nods and curt waves that only served to recognise that they had the backing of a good two-thirds of the assembled crowd in Blackheart.

The match began as any traditional Blue Foxes match would: kickstarting the offensive drive early. Bookies and foreign newspapers were calling this Ro16 matchup one of the most lopsided in AOCAF history, with the fifth-ranked Pacitalians facing a Delesa squad wallowing down in 23rd on the AOFA rankings. Indeed, the Foxes were in control of the match from start to finish, though their facial expressions and body language before kickoff seemed to show opposite emotions. Just three minutes in the nervousness on the Blue Foxes squad looked to be nicely evaporated as Ambrosino Giurimano peeled off a shot that Javier Topper only managed to just save, the ball bouncing off his fingertips and out for a corner.

On the ensuing kick from the corner Andolfabio Vunghiasso found Andreos Charisteas lurking in the back right of the box and spun a chip to the right midfielder, but Charisteas could not find a hole through the traffic in front of goal and the ball bounced off the chest of Patrick O'Casey, who had been jumping up to block Charisteas' shot. Five more chances ensued in the first ten minutes and seemed to put Pacitalia in a more confident state of mind heading into the last twenty minutes of the first half. By the time half an hour had passed, it was finally time for a goal, and with the double-blue faithful egging on its starting eleven, Veranace d'Amantano made a move, a nifty heel-pass back to Vunghiasso, who rocketed a shot into the box and found Ambrosino Giurimano waiting for the redirect. That goal sent the Blue Fox fans into a frenzy as, after twenty-nine minutes of less and less nervous shot-taking, the team was rewarded with a one goal advantage.

Delesa United's play began to collapse from there, with several defenders taking unnecessary yellow cards. No reds were shown, however, but the entire back formation for Delesa now had cautions hanging over their heads. Sloppier and sloppier Delesa's play became, until the severely undisciplined squad finally committed a costly error allowing Charisteas to streak forward, breaking past the defence. By the time the defence caught up, Charisteas had already beaten Topper with a ground-hugging, curving punt to put the Blue Foxes up 2-0 in the 51st.

The Blue Foxes settled back into defending their lead and helping keeper Cristianu Raduvani to his first clean sheet of AOCAF18, but another defensive miscue by the Delesans left the Blue Foxes wide open to successfully convert a third goal just seven minutes after their second score, thanks to the fancy footwork of Giurimano and Veranace d'Amantano. The captain pocketed his third of the tournament with 32 minutes to go and promptly winked to the fans before leading the team back to settle into defensive mode.

It's the Bazalopes next for Pacitalia: the Bazalonian squad edged Milchama 2-1 in Lahar and will try to upset the Blue Foxes in Salahadin City, where the Pacitalians drew 1-1 with Nojika. The host Myrtannians advanced as well, beating Aurendia 1-0, while Demot edged Az-Cz, Hypocria nailed Nedalia and Lamoni eliminated their archrivals Starblaydia in penalty kicks. Nojika themselves are advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history, having eliminated perennial mediocrators The Lowland Clans 2-1.

"We play our game, we take control early, and we'll be in the semifinals," captain Veranace d'Amantano said upon being informed of the Bazalonians' burning desire to upset the Blue Foxes and eliminate them. "It's not an easy task but it's manageable. It's time that we step up to the plate and win ourselves a championship."

Alson and Amoa Looking Forward to Clash with Hawks
Nojika's former internation stars are preparing their side for a historical move against the Lamoni Hawks

SKALATUR, MYRTANNIA
-- Both former international stars Jerrel Alson and Carlos Amoa are reportedly preparing their side for yet another meeting between the Panthers and the Hawks. What's different about this meeting than those prior is that it will be in a round that even their managers have never played in in this competition, let alone any other Nojikan. "We all understand just how important this next match is. We are going up against giants in football, and it is our mission to rise to the top, and that now means we must go through Lamoni," said assistant and former team mate to Alson, Carlos Amoa, "We weren't expected to beat The Lowland Clans, and we surely are not expected to be triumphant over the Hawks. But that's where reality and speculation differ. We've proved we can do it, and now we must prove ourselves again."

After their inspiring win against favored The Lowand Clans, the Nojikan Panthers have been given the task to deal with the Lamoni Hawks in the Quarter Finals. "We set our goal well before the start of the competition. We have just one goal that each of us are working towards, and that is doing the impossible. We want to be recognized as a powerhouse in regional football, and that means going against the odds," said captain Robbie Hedeen who proved just how influential he is to his team mates during their victory over The Lowland Clans when he rallied the troops to pull back two goals; "Bring on Lamoni. We are more than happy to deal with them. It's almost to bad that they already took out Starblaydia, we would have loved to face them too."

In the past, the Panthers have not had a great deal of success against Lamoni, but that was clearly a part of the past, as Nojika have already pushed themselves into a position nobody thought possible. Even the Nephi Times from Lamoni stated that Nojika is "...One surprise away from not finishing last." Could this really be the year that Nojika push themselves up from a drought of professional stars to upsetting the stars of the past?

Yes, stars of the past. There is no doubt Lamoni have done well to have accomplished what they have thus far, but it was not unexpected. Many believe that reaching the ability and level of the Starblaydia's and Lamoni's of the world is the greatest level to achieve in football. But what about the little guys? What about the teams that are expected to fight to not finish last in their group and have another pathetic competition? What can be said about these sides when they finish second in their group behind a powerful side like Pacitalia and ahead of a historically strong Vilita & Turori team? Are they still just piss-ants, or have they achieved a whole new level of technical skill and mental ability? The Blues, Panthers, Nojikans, or whatever else they are called these days are convinced they have reached a whole new level of professionalism and are confident, but not complacent, about where they are going this year, "This is football. Things happen that you can't control and we all know that. [Yes], we are confident about facing Lamoni, but we're certainly not over-confident, and we have [Jerrel Alson and Carlos Amoa] to thank for that. Their experience and wisdom has helped us, and will continue to help us throughout the remaineder of this competition and for competitions to come," said 33 year old goalkeeper, Monte Potempa, whose own experience has led his team to the great success they've experienced thus far.

Round of 16 Fixtures

Tomorrow, Nojika (3-1-1) will face Lamoni (4-1-0) who advanced after defeating Starblaydia in a penalty shootout. Meanwhile, cup hosts Myrtannia (5-0-0) will face Demot (3-1-1), Pacitalia (4-1-0) will play Bazalonia (3-1-1) and the Hyypos of Hypocria (4-0-1) will go up against Vilita & Turori (3-0-2).

"But that's where reality and speculation differ. We've proved we can do it, and now we must prove ourselves again."
- Jerrel Alson, International Manager

To Whom it may concern;

It distresses me that in the article entitled "Precision play, lopsided matchup helps Blue Foxes back into the quarterfinals" it refers to the Bazalonian Bazalopes having played against Milchama and with an upcoming match against the Pacitalian Blue Foxes. Infact this is not the case the Bazacubs, the Bazalonian national U'21 team are infact the team that the Pacitalians will be facing and the Milchamians have faced.

Do you see a mention of Peter Hobble, Andrew Creek or any other of the nations strong players from the main national adult team? Of course this is a rhetorical question with an implied answer of no. Please ensure you get the team right next time because it implies that the Bazalonian national team is participating in the AOCAF which it certainly is not.

Associated Press of Nojika Releases Quarter Final Predictions
For the first time in history, Nojika advances to the quarter finals, and we have the predicted outcomes of each match

ROZIER, NOJIKA
-- The Blues have, for the first time in their history forced themselves into the quarter finals of the AOCAF. The 2-1 victory over The Lowland Clans secured their place in this historical appearance for the Blues. The APN has taken into consideration only past and present form as well as historical team strength.

Myrtannia (5-0-0) vs. Demot (3-1-1)
Once again cup hosts Myrtannia have crushed their opponent and have continued their outstanding form. It will be up to Demot to withstand the pressure and the confident hosts as they look to continue to cruise to glory. Perhaps Demot's only chance is to take the Myrtannia side to a shootout where they will have to rely more on their technical skill.

Pacitalia (4-1-0) vs. Bazalonia (3-1-1)
Pacitalia, without a doubt looks to be the stronger of the two sides, but Bazalonia have looked more comfortable on the pitch. Many expect Pacitalia and Bazalonia to fight to the death, but that may not be so. Both will start out looking to defend their own net, and it will be the Blue Foxes that begin to push as Bazalonia may sit back and defend until they catch a lucky break.

Hypocria (4-1-0) vs. Vilita & Turori (3-0-2)
The Hyypos will look to continue their great form and will likely look to counter attack. The Jungle Cats on the other hand are still looking desperately to turn things around and begin to dominate just as they once did in the regional competition. Surely, the Jungle Cats and this years' form should not be taken for granted, as they have proved they can strike at any time.

Lamoni (4-1-0) vs. Nojika (3-1-1)
Once again the Blues are the underdogs and will look to do become giant killers in this rounds biggest match. Lamoni defeated Starblaydia in the Round of 16 and will attempt to stand tall against a talented and strong Nojikan team. It's expected that Nojika will come out quick looking to put the Hawks on their heels early and do the unexpected and continue to shock their opponenets

Dear viewer and surfer:

The Pacitalian Sports Network would like to make a correction regarding a report published early this morning on our website, PSN.pc. In it PSN.pc staff said that the Blue Foxes would face the Bazalopes in the quarterfinals of the 18th Atlantian Oceanian Cup of Association Football. This is incorrect; it is indeed the Bazacubs competing in this incarnation of AOCAF. We sincerely apologise for the misunderstanding and the confusion and hope that this correction rectifies the problem.
