Eel Cat Things Fall to Az-Cz, Still Win Group

The Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat things entered into their final day matchup with Az-Cz knowing that a win would see them finish top of Group C, but a defeat by 3 goals or more could see them lose the top spot and face a potential banana peel matchup in the Round of 16. It was a very exciting matchup, perhaps one of the most exciting of the tournament as the talent level of the Vilita & Turori bench was right on par with that of the World Cup Finalist's regional squad. The Class of the Az-Cz squad shown through in the first half as they took a 3-1 lead, but Vilita & Turori fought back with a pair of goals from Turorian substitute Imaima Cziil. The match looked destined for Extra Time, but 19 year old Gs-Kin had other ideas as he put Az-Cz back in front just 3 minutes from time. Vilita & Turori put all men forward pressing for the equalizer, with literally nothing to lose as they were all but assured of topping the group at this stage win lose or dr... well win or lose. Even Goalkeeper Tuia Miao was in the box as an unknown Vilitan defender whipped in a corner kick 2 minutes into stoppage time, but an incredible 50-yard punch up the center of the pitch from Za-Rv sent 14 year old substitute striker El-Iot clear on goal as the Vilita & Turorians were clearly out of gas. With keeper Tuia well out of net, the only one El-Iot had to beat was the clock itself, as the referee already had the whistle in his mouth and looked set to blow full time, but a first glance at the Vilita & Turori bench saw Ricky Ezis apathetic to the situation, actually smiling and pointing at the young player clearly interested to see if he could convert. The referee held off on his whistle and the 14 year old took advantage of the leniency, though nearly tripping 25 yards from goal, and nearly shooting over from just inside the box, the ball eventually found its way into the roof of the net to complete the 3-5 scoreline in favor of Az-Cz.

Vilita & Turori 3-5 Az-cz

The defeat is the first of the campaign for Ricky Ezis's squad, but the World Cup Hall of Fame defender did not appear to be worried in his post match press conference. The Starting squad has spent the past 3 days back home in Vilita & Turori getting a temporary reprieve from the horrid society that is Bettian Culture. This should prove to the Eel Cat Things advantage as they approach the knockout stage, where they have been drawn with the Commonwealth of Delesa. During AOCAF XVIII, Delesa was knocked out at the Round of 16 stage of the competition by Pacitalia and a convincing 3-0 scoreline. Vilita & Turori will certainly be looking to at least duplicate this feet when they entertain the United Team in the first knockout stage matchup of the competition.

An Interesting conversation occured during the press-conference however, when Ezis started in a discussion with one of the Az-Cz journalists about the predictions he had previously published in an Az-Cz press release.

"You really didn't get a single one of them right, did you" Ezis snidely commented to the Az-Czzer. Indeed, he was right. The Az-Cz predictions could not have been more wrong, in fact. Well. No, out of the 16 predictions possible, they were accurate in 4 of them, getting 0 matchups out of 8 correct. So, the final group stage projections were 25% accurate and the Second Round Matchups were 0% accurate. "You really wonder why you journalists bother sometimes." Ezis continued, "Just report on the game, report on the team, all you're doing by making such outlandish predictions is packaging bull -explicitive removed- in the form of text and trying to sell it. You know as well as I do that once you are out on the pitch anything goes, I just wish you guys would spend more time reporting on things that are factual instead of always speculating who is going to win, who's going to be under pressure, who's gone to the club in the past week with a potential stripper. Theres no need for that kind of crap in here, and I tell you, its exactly the reason we imposed a media blackout in the mid to late 20's. A reporter couldn't find a job in sports for years In Vilita or Turori as a direct result of the crap journalism they were putting out. Just a warning to ya, I'm sure you don't want that to happen in Az-Cz but it can. It can."

As Ezis was walking out of the room, the Journalist, who clearly hadn't learned a thing from Ezis's Semi-Rant, posed a challenge to Ezis, asking him for his predictions for the round of 16. "Vilita & Turori will win, because we will out perform our opponents, not because I've predicted a win here today."

Delesa defeats Hawks AET, Lamoni still wins group

Who in their right mind uses a Surface to Air Missile to shoot down a bird?? Yet, this is what the headline from Delesa proudly proclaimed after their 3-1 AET victory over the Hawks.

The match started well enough with Gerhardt Gomeric (who Delesa proclaimed to be *INJURED* Forward Kendrick Zingg; insulting Gomeric in the process) scoring Lamoni's only goal at 14 minutes in.

As for Gomeric himself, he had a short statement at the Delesian misstatement, "I do not see how it is possible that I could be mistaken for Kendrick. First, we look nothing alike, and second, we have different jersey numbers. Not to mention the name difference. Crediting the injured Kendrick with my goal shows a lack of fact checking in the Delesian media, and I sincerely hope that it never happens again."

Delesa scored in the 17th minute, which allowed the score to remain 1-1 until the final gun. Since there are no draws in AOCAF XIX, the match proceeded into Extra Time; where Delesa managed to score two more goals to win with a scoreline of 3-1.

Despite the abominable loss to Delesa, the Hawks have captured the Group D title, and aren't going to let this blip get out of perspective. After all, they've made it to the knockouts. Their opponent for the 'Round of 16'? It is a foe that they've faced and won against many times before... Krytenia. That's right... the Hawks will be facing the silent Kryties. If the Hawks play solid AOCAF football, then they should have an outright win, allowing them to advance and keep going for that third straight AOCAF cup.

Now for our Round of 16 predictions:

Pacitalia (6) vs Quakmybush (17)

Pacitalia topped their group, and made it look rather easy. Quite a feat, considering the number of good teams in their group.

Verdict: Pacitalia wins 1-0

Az-cz (15) vs Sarzonia (35)

Sarzonia has a fairly low AOCAF ranking, and yet they have still made the knockouts. They have a tough challenge ahead of them in the form of Az-cz. Their defense will be the key.

Verdict: Sarzonia AET win 3-2

Hypocria (7) vs Aurendia (16)

The last time that these two teams met (AOCAF XVI, Lamoni), Aurendia pulled off a huge upset. They'll have a tough time repeating that.

Verdict: Hypocria win 3-1

Nojika (14) vs Bazalonia (8)

Nojika are doing well for themselves in AOCAF XIX, while Bazalonia made the knockouts by the skin of their teeth. This match should be over quickly, one way or the other.

Verdict: Nojika win 1-0

V/T (5) vs Delesa (19)

The team that just beat us against the team that we won our first AOCAF cup from. One thing is certain, Delesa is the team that needs to step it up in this one.

Verdict: V/T win 2-0

Bettia (2) vs Starblaydia (4)

Probably the best match of the Ro16, these two teams will be going after each other with everything that they can muster. We don't think that it'll be enough for the Men in Muave, though.

Verdict: Bettia win 1-0

Lamoni (1) vs Krytenia (12)

Our match. We've faced and defeated the Kryties before, and we think that we will do so again, the Delesa and Nojika matches notwithstanding. The Kryties are a fading squad.

Verdict: Lamoni win 3-0

Milchama (10) vs Nedalia (13)

The men of horses vs an SDL ally. This match looks close on paper, but Nedalia is losing steam.

Verdict: Milchama win 2-1 AET

Six for kicks... but almost not: defence nearly flubs off the match
Manager plays substitute halfback and fullback against Schiavonia, almost a disaster - but another extra time win

PORTHBALFA, Y GWLAD TEG, BETTIA (PSN)
-- Even though the Blue Foxes were able to stay put in a city, between matches, for the first time during the group stage, it didn't matter much. Sergei Saganyarov took a huge risk by starting two reserves in defence against Schiavonia, and they almost took the Blue Foxes to task for it, putting up a three-goal lead that was almost insurmountable, but from which the determined Pacitalian squad managed to recover from... in a 4-3 extra-time win.

The Blue Foxes had already locked up the pool over their formidable Bettian and Nedalian groupmates, and so team manager Saganyarov had been looking to rest much of the core of the squad in preparation for their round of 16 and quarterfinals matches. Saganyarov wanted the scorers and the defenders rested, healthy and ready to march all the way to the final in Gabalfa, so he reunited former U21 World Cup striking linemates Massimo da Scupeta and Andreos Charisteas at left and right forward, respectively, and gave Ambrosino Giurimano, who'd scored seven times in five matches, and captain Veranace d'Amantano, each a day off.

In place of Charisteas at right midfield, Saganyarov played substitute Stefano Speralonzo, and in the back core, benched Francesco Manzanotti for a poor match-day-five performance in favour of Alfonso Purano Cernía. He also rested Nuno Cabana after a weak effort on match day five and a terrible practice and put in sub halfback Chimano San' Sebastiano in his place. "The Bear" Saganyarov had also expressed doubts about the readiness of starting keeper Cristianu Raduvani after letting in two questionable goals against Capitalizt SLANI. His intuition was completely bang-on but his roster fiddlings were only half-correct as the rusty, stiff substitutes crash-landed and resulted in Raduvani's benching at halftime. But it was the two forwards who saved Pacitalia from a bad day at the office, combining for all four of the Blue Foxes' goals in a narrow win.

Winston Hurst put the Schiavones on the board early thanks to a long lead pass from centre-back Carlos Cueto (who, coincidentally, is second-cousin to Krytenian brothers Andy and Matt, twins that competed on the PBC's first season of The Amazing Race: Atlantian Oceania). The Schiavones, like the SLANI, were just playing spoiler after hearing that Aurendia had shockingly upset Bettia in extra time to secure the fourth and final knockouts berth in Group A. Thus, they had no qualms about trying to blemish the Blue Foxes' record and leave them with a stinging loss and much on their conscience heading into the octofinals. And the orange-and-browns' undersized fan base revelled in the shocked, distressed and uncertain looks on the faces of their Pacitalian counterparts, as the Schiavonians doubled their lead just half an hour in off a James Hogan popper, the left Strengther easily slinking past a stunned Purano Cernía and sliding the ball between Raduvani's right arm and the pitch surface. The news got worse with two minutes remaining in the first half as Hurst scored his second off a weird-angle that eluded San' Sebastiano, centre-back Sergio San' Cristobal and Raduvani to put the Schiavonians at a very lopsided 3-0 advantage heading into the team talk.

You didn't have to be inside the Pacitalian locker room to guess how Saganyarov was talking to his players. We think they got the message.

When the teams returned, Purano Cernía was gone in favour of Mario Mauro Andornatini, Raduvani was, once again, on the bench in favour of Abro Zolà Meridiano, and Nuno Cabana was still sitting in the stands despite Chimano San' Sebastiano's failed attempt at filling in for the Portuguese-Pacitalian halfback. Instead of restoring Nuno Cabana on the pitch, Saganyarov opted to fill the left halfback slot with Pado Anatoliano. Saganyarov had substituted the three right before the end of the first half in order to avoid using up his second-half trio of substitution options. Andornatini, Meridiano and Anatoliano helped the defence snap back to life, and shifted into high gear relatively effortlessly, aiding a tired San' Cristobal, who had essentially been doing most of the work in the first half and was simply unlucky to concede the Schiavonians' third goal.

Nine minutes into the second half, the offence finally got to work, with right-forward Andreos Charisteas sending off a crisp, curling rocket to the top-left corner to shave an encouraging third off the Schiavonian lead. He followed it up with a second tally in the 68th to narrow the Schiavonian advantage to one goal at 3-2, before providing linemate da Scupeta with the equaliser in the 79th. Surprisingly, the Blue Fox fans did not really jump up in a mass celebration - moreso, it was a collective, and audible, sigh of relief... that perhaps the Pacitalian squad still had a 6-0-0-0 group stage record in the cards.

Those sighs of relief were dealt to the players in exchange for cheers of happiness among the fans as da Scupeta matched his linemate's tallies with ten minutes remaining, scoring his second of the match to lock up a perfect record for the Blue Foxes, but one that might not have happened thanks to what was a second extra-time result.

Players are either ambivalent, implicitly supportive or tight-lipped about Saganyarov's massive changes to the Swiss cheese of AOCAF defensive cores. The general consensus among both players and fans is that something needs to change, or the cup won't be going east to Pacitalia.

"The offence is making up for what the defence isn't doing," a tongue-in-cheek captain d'Amantano said after watching the match from the team section of the stands. "I'm not going to say anything more about it."

Indeed, ten other players asked to comment on what was happening to Pacitalia's defence refused to do so, instead leaving the negativity to the man from whom it was expected: the manager himself.

Saganyarov had been proactive prior to the start of this match (just in case), activating four reserves: left-back Paolo Sprivola, right-back Giovanni Manta, halfback Dragomir Danut and goalkeeper Tryphon Apostikos. He says the four have arrived in Bettia via Gabalfa International Airport and will meet the team for their full practice prior to the octofinals match against Quakmybush at the Gasworks. This has led to speculation that Nuno Cabana, Manzanotti and Raduvani will be sent back to Pacitalia sometime tonight in order to maintain the roster cap, and also, that left-back Angelo Bordellatta may or may not be benched for a large portion of the knockouts.

"I'm tired of the [expletive] play from that defence," he said. "Something's got to give. I gave them enough chances - now they're paying the price. Every other time we've had holes in our defensive play, past managers have simply ignored the problem, willing it to go away, and look where it's gotten us. This time I'm taking the tough-love approach. We've got nothing to lose but our fans' support, and it's damn time they got to see what they deserve: a trophy proudly hoisted above our heads."

Asked on the starting XI for the octofinals match against Quakmybush, Saganyarov said he'll "likely start Sprivola and Manta" alongside the only sure thing so far for the Blue Foxes' defence, centre-back Sergio San' Cristobal.

"I gave Alfonso [Purano Cernía] his shot at the right-back starting job and he was [expletive]," Saganyarov remarked. "So he'll be back on the bench, no question."

That particular comment has left all Pacitalian fans and team observers certain: if anyone is going home, it's Manzanotti. Attempts to contact him, and troubled keeper Raduvani, at the team hotel, to confirm or deny the rumour that they were being sent home, were unsuccessful.

Saganyarov was once again "extremely impressed" with da Scupeta and implied the 22-year-old will probably start at left forward next tournament if d'Amantano retires. He also implied that Charisteas might see some action on the front line as speculation increases over whether this is Ambrosino Giurimano's last jab at international competition.

"The chemistry between [da Scupeta and Charisteas] definitely hasn't gone away at all," he said. "Tonight, they were bloody brilliant together... and that is probably the biggest understatement I'll make in this tournament."

Saganyarov finished with a surprisingly eloquent comment. "Our fans care so much about this sport, and they're crazy about us. We don't deserve their dedication anymore if neither the team, nor I, do everything in our power to bring that cup home. No excuses this time."

From Porthbalfa, Y Gwlad Teg, Bettia:
Schiavonia 3 (3) : 3 (4) Pacitalia

SCH: Hurst 15', 43' / Hogan 29'
PAC: Charisteas 54', 68' / da Scupeta 79', 110'

NEXT UP: PAC v QMB (OF/Ro16), SCH v n/a (eliminated)
Pacitalia
The best place on earth.

Gnomes make a statement

Going into their match against Vilita & Turori it was known that the Gnomes would be advancing, almost certainly in a top two spot, barring some good fortune against the Eelcats. However the team still wanted to prove that they were a force to be reckoned with in the AOCAF, even as a junior side. Taking down a team as good as Vilita & Turori would do just that. And although the team failed to pass Vilita for the top spot they looked impressive in earning a 5-3 victory.

Starting out strong Ho-Lee Chung stamped his mark once again on the game opening the scoring in minute 9 with a well taken free kick and adding his second in minute 22 with a rocket blast from 30 yards out. However the Eelcats proved their worth by quickly answering back to pull within one. However Chung set up Fe-Do for a beautiful goal in the later minutes of the half that sent the Gnomes up 3-1, a scoreline that could have seen them to the top of the group.

The Eelcats however, were determined to avoid such a result and fought back for two goals in the second half to even the score and earn the bonus point, meaning that the Gnomes would need three goals to steal the top spot. Although they did their best to do so, they simply ran out of time. Gs-Kin earned the victory in the 87th minute and El-Iot added a fifth goal in stoppage time, but they didn't have a chance for the sixth.

That leaves the Gnomes a very dangerous match with Sarzonia in the next round. History is clearly on the side of the Sarzonians but if Zax-Im's side can continue to show it's fine form anything could happen.

Vilitan coach flips out; I make predictions regardless

After losing to the team Vilitan coach Ezis tried to display a sense of calmness about having watched his team get outworked and outperformed, but when the subject of my predictions came up, he went into a fury about the stupidity of making predictions. What he fails to understand is that the correctness of the predictions is but a small part of the reason we make them. The main reason we making them is that both us as writer and you as reader enjoy them. The amount of mail I get protesting my predictions is too much to count. And you'd be suprised at how many picks I get sent in. I heard it's even popular enough that the Az-cz football federation will be running a contest related to predictions this world cup. Another reason is that it gives us a good chance to analyze the upcoming matches and speculate about matches down the road. Yes we could do the analysis without making the prediction, but it only adds to make the analysis. If Ezis doesn't like making predictions he doesn't have to, and probably shouldn't. But I'm a mostly independent observer, so I'm going to continue slinging them out there. And yes they'll probably be wrong. But I'll remind him that I predicted Bettia winning the cup. Yes, it took me three sets of predictions, to do so, but what they hey. Without further ado here are my predictions for the knockout stages of the AOCAF:

Pacitalia vs Quakmybush (The Gasworks, Gabalfa)

I had high hopes for Quakmybush, but they didn't live up to the standards and now can expect to be quickly ushered out of the tournament by a strong looking Pacitalian team.

Az-cz vs Sarzonia (Alice Street, Butetown, Gabalfa)

Az-cz has been one of the stronger teams this tournament and based on the performance up to this point might be the strongest second place finisher. In terms of goal differential they come in third, behind only Pacitalia and Hypocria, even registering ahead of Lamoni and Vilita & Turori. That's all well and good, but somehow I just don't feel confident about the upcoming match against Sarzonia. The Stars are on good form including a thrashing of Nojika and I expect the curse of the letter "B" and the AOCAF struggles to come together in a Sarzonia upset.

Hypocria vs Aurendia (Parc Dociau, Porthbalfa)

While Aurendia is certainly a dangerous team Hypocria's looked great so far and should be able to handle the raptors well enough.

Nojika vs Bazalonia (Heol Angharyd, Ceffinton)

Once again I expect that the three seed will knock off the two. After treading dangerously close to failing to qualify the Bazalopes put their act together beat teams they should and now should take down a Nojikan team who perhaps overperformed in the group stage.

Vilita & Turori vs Delesa (Shubunkin Park, Akani Sands)

Somehow Delesa upset Lamoni. Don't expect lightning to strike twice. The Eelcats should bounce back nicely from their loss to us. I agree with coach Ezis that they will earn the victory.

Bettia vs Starblaydia (Stamping Ground, Lorshill)

In a titilating tilt expect a high scoring matchup between two strong teams. Bettia was a bit of a disappointment in the group stage, but a weak group allowed them to still slip in to second. Starblaydia is no longer the team they once were. Ever since coach Khim left to come here they've been sliding downwards. Expect about a 3-2 win for the Bettians here.

Lamoni vs Krytenia (Al-Fath Stadium, Sukatra)

A very interesting match and a tough draw for the defending champs. That's what they get for being opposite the toughest group. Krytenia is the best of the four seeds and if a group winner is to fall this is where it will happen. That being said, don't expect a group winner to fall. Lamoni ought to have enough to get past the Aces.

Milchama vs Nedalia (Thamitra Gate, Tamrida)

Milchama had a nice run in their group only losing to Hypocria. Nedalia limped out of a rather unimpressive group. Expect the lions to be limping home after their match against the warriors.

That would leave a quarterfinals of:

Pacitalia v Sarzonia
Hypocria v Bazalonia
Vilita & Turori v Bettia
Lamoni v Milchama

I think the Stars cup comes to an end here. They're playing well but Pacitalia looks determined and if they're going to be taken down it has to be a stronger team to do it. This Sarzonia side is good, but it isn't the calibre of years past. I'd like to predict the Bazalopes to knock off the Hyppos here, but I wouldn't put much money on it. Expect the two teams who ran the table in their groups to advance to the group stage. The Eelcats square off in a great matchup against the hosts, and I think the Bettians show the spirit that brought them home the world cup, making Vilita the first group winner sent home. Despite Milchama's record something about their performance this AOCAF doesn't seem quite right and I think that Lamoni will have a walk in the park knocking them out.

In that case the remaining four would be:

Pacitalia v Hypocria
Bettia v Lamoni

Talk about great matchups. On one side you'd have the two undefeated teams. And on the other side you'd have the hosts and reigning world champions against the two time defending Atlantian Oceania champs. Interestingly the hosts would be the only World Cup competing team in the finals. While that may seem like a suprise, it isn't really, as saving their senior side just for the AOCAF allows these nations to have better in form teams, rather than junior sides or teams run down from a full schedule of world cup and league games. On the side of the undefeated teams, expect Pacitalia to advance to their first ever finals and reestablish their love of playing in Bettia. On the other side expect Lamoni to put themselves on the verge of very rarified air by eliminating Bettia and moving themselves one win away from a third consecutive title.

Third Place Playoff

Hypocria v Bettia

The Third Place Playoff is about emotion. As it's basically an exhibition match with neither team really needing the win, desire often trumps skill. That ought to mean that Bettia wanting to do their home fans proud knocks out Hypocria for third place.

Finals

If Lamoni could win this match they'd have three consecutive AOCAF titles, joining only the Druids from way back in the day with such a run of dominance. With two more second places thrown in at the start of the streak they'd clearly stamp themselves as the unquestioned Kings of AOCAF. As an aside, it makes you wonder why they don't compete in the World Cup, where they could well win the whole thing with a squad as talented as they have. However I think they'll fall just short of that level of history and have to console themselves with two cups and three runner up finishes. That's because Pacitalia is ready to break through and finally win an AOCAF. Pacitalia has tempted me before with fine group play stage, but I think this is REALLY the time they get it done. Despite some difference of opinions on things with Az-cz, Pacitalians truly give their heart every time on the pitch. They may not have quite as much talent as the hawks, but a desire to breakthrough should trump the desire for history and allow the Foxes to bring home a well deserved title.

It's That Time Again
Delesa has a great run, but in the end, heads home

The game had been intense from the start, United players knowing this was probaly the last time they would play at the AOCAF 19. But the United players once again didn't start hard they know they can, and hence gave up the first goal to V&T. Maybe it was the awkard glare from their unique jeresys, or maybe it was just a complete failure on the defencive side. How knows, but the point is at the 34th minute V&T was up 1-nil to the black and red. And United didn't look like they planned on changing their playing style, when all of a sudden, with a free kick in the United side by Jason Clare, the ball sailed right into the chest of Michael McShane and he in turn was able to contol the ball, in the air, keeping the ball airborne with his foot, dancing his way around the V&T defenders, then at the final moment, tapped the ball to the ground, and hammered a left foot shot which curled at the top of the 18 yard box, just to make it inside the left goal post, and just past the hands of Tuia Miao, producing a goal for United in the 44th minute, and not a moment too soon as the half ended one all.

With a performace shown my Michael McShane, United fans were pleased with the teams performance, even the coach Richard could be seen on the side lines pumping his arm slighty, for a man who never seems to show any emotions. But the Delesian players didn't exit the tunnels like they had in the last game, and it showed on the field in the first several minutes, as offensive plays fell apart at the seams and defensive counter attacks broke down, leaving Travis Topper made several miraculous saves, keeping the game at 1-1. But as it seemed that United and V&T were about to head into extra time, Kristofer Kilpter pulled a Michael McShane move as weaved his way around the United defenders, and chipped a shot at Travis, and what looked like a simple catch, managed to plop on the ground, hit an uneven level of dirt and skid under Travis's legs, just barley making past the white line. At that point the United team played more defensive as they had already left the stadium mentally. But it was a small victory for the team to make it hence far, and shall be treated like the king himself apon arrival back at the St. Myhre International Airport. Jeresys were once again offered off the backs of the United players as a sign of repect. They might have not been there mentally for the ending of the game, but they sure were there for the sportsmanship.

In the meantime, Coach Richard Loew also is heading back to Delesa to set up a training clinic for the team before he heads off to coach his team back in United Kingdom of Oceania for the finals. And I think the United fans can rest assured that Richard will be back next time to reak havoc in the next AOCAF. See you there!

Final Stats for the national team:

Win Delesa 3-1 Manhattan Prime
Loss Sarzonia 2-2 Delesa (2-2 After Extra Time) (Sarzonia wins 3-2 on penalty kicks)

Takilan Fever

Brian Cahill reporting from Porthbalfa, Bettia.

There’s no hiding it. The boys in blue and white just love playing in Bettia. With the fun and games of the group stages now a memory surely a more cautious and sensible approach would be adopted now this tournament had reached its business end. Well no actually. A Hypocrian team in full attacking flow can be enchanting to watch and impossible to stop. And new coach Chavez was clearly happy to let his charges show the other challengers exactly what they could do. As Aurendia found to their cost.

The Hyppos’ showed their intent straight from the kickoff as Sousa tried an audacious lob from inside the centre circle but the ball drifted wide of, the ferociously back pedalling, Sullivan’s goal. It would have been a spectacular way to open the scoring but the opener was no less impressive. It was a beautifully crafted move of thirty two passes, starting with Kutasi and ending with Razin slotting in Baxter’s cut back at the far post. It was a great team move and the celebrations that followed reflected that fact.

The second goal followed almost immediately as Raptor wide man Black played a sloppy attempted pass across the pitch. Marilier made the interception and showed quick thinking to release Baxter in behind the now out of position David Black. Baxter drove forward, skipped past Keane’s challenge and placed a pinpoint cross onto the head of Vardanyan who steered the ball past Sullivan. The Hyppo fans roared the goal while their Aurendian counterparts looked on, shell shocked.

It wasn’t getting any better for the Raptors as their opponents bagged a third. Marica found Sousa with a great slide-rule pass and the in form striker broke into the box and once again tried to lift the ball over Sullivan. The Aurendia stopper pulled out a great stop to turn the ball away with his fingertips but luck was not on his side as the rebound fell straight to Vardanyan who simply couldn’t miss. It was 3 - 0 and with ten minutes of the half still to play.

And when your luck is out, it’s really out. It’s rare for Alex Sousa not to get in on the act but the forward’s goal came thanks to a huge slice of fortune. He took aim from twenty five yards and his shot took a wicked deflection off Quintana to wrong foot Sullivan and nestle inside the bottom corner of the net. Four goals to the good at the break and the fans could scarcely believe it.

After the interval there surely had to be a change in fortune and nine minutes into the second have the Raptors’ faithful finally had something to celebrate, and it was a real family affair. The often fragile Hyppo backline is always going to give the opposition opportunities and on this occasion it wasn’t wasted. Cassandra Campbell, the Aurendia captain, played a nicely weighted ball in between Hunter and Kordan for niece Kara to run on to. The number 11’s pace took her clear of the defence and she placed her shot perfectly beyond the reach of Georgi Kutasi.

But at 4 - 1 the Autocracy’s finest were still comfortable. At 4 - 2 however it was a different story. The family Campbell were not quite finished with this match. Cassandra robbed Marilier in the centre and played it forward to Ashley. The Etoka Bandits striker took a touch before hitting a venomous drive from fully thirty yards that flew past Kutasi before he could react. Two cracking goals had dragged the Raptors right back into this contest. Game on.

Game on indeed considering the Hyppos’ passion for leaking goals and Aurendia’s growing sense of belief. Unfortunately the task meant they had to take risks and when you take risks you leave yourself open to counterattacks. And that’s just what happened as Marica broke up an attack in midfield and fed Vardanyan who slide the ball below the onrushing Sullivan to complete his hattrick with the nation’s fifth goal of the night.

With their chance of an unlikely comeback snatched away Aurendia heads dropped. Marica completed this comprehensive win with a late sixth and the Hyppos’ were through to the AOCAF quarter finals for the fifth successive tournament.

Quarter Final Preview

Pacitalia (6) v Az-cz (15)
Can anyone stop the Blue Foxes? That is starting to look like the crucial question in this edition of the AOCAF tournament. They may not have over exerted themselves in a comfortable 2 - 0 win over Quakmybush but that is now seven wins in a row. It may be a case of beat Pacitalia, win the trophy. Az-cz are the next nation who’ll have a go and the Gnomes might fancy their chances after a hard fought win over a resurgent Sarzonia. You’ve still got to fancy the Foxes though.
Verdict: Eight wins in a row.

Hypocria (7) v Bazalonia (8)
Pacitalia’s record may be impressive but there’s one side who are doing just that little bit better. It’s true folks. The Hyppos’ have also won seven in a row and all of those in ninety minutes. Plus they’ve scored as many goals as the Blue Foxes and conceded a couple less. And they’ve won the last four previous AOCAF meetings with quarter final opponants Bazalonia. But the Bazalonians will be looking for revenge after losing the third place playoff four years ago and they looked good in their 3 - 0 win over Nojika.
Verdict: Fingers crossed.

Vilita/Turori (5) v Bettia (2)
The organising committee are certainly not showing any bias towards the home team. The Aroras just about edged one regional juggernaut, Starblaydia by the odd goal in five, only to see them replaced by another. V/T didn’t seem to find top gear in beating Delesa 2 - 1 and should have plenty left in the tank when they take on big rivals Bettia. They’re going to need it. More importantly the rest of us can sit back, safe in the knowledge that one big name is certain to be heading home.
Verdict: Aroras’ scrape through.

Lamoni (1) v Nedalia (13)
A single goal was enough to see the reigning champions past Krytenia and into the last eight. There they will face the Lions of Nedalia, who eliminated Milchama in the last sixteen. The Lions are an unpredictable side who, on their day, can beat anybody. Sadly those days are getting rarer and rarer. Nedalia can count on plenty of local support but Lamoni shouldn’t stumble here in their quest for an almost unprecedented three trophy’s in succession.
Verdict: Champs into the final four.

Bazalopes charge over Nojika!

In AOCAF 19, Bazalonia had scares, almost being knocked out of the top 4 places but sneaking into third by the virtue of only a slightly larger goal differential than Krytenia and a third team. Performance was all over the place, performing well against the Uzlaxid team but only barely scraping by other teams. However despite being ranked 8th in the region not many had hopes for Bazalonia to make a determined challenge against Nojika, and had even totally dismissed any chance for a Bazalonian appearance in the AOCAF Finals let alone holding the cup aloft.

Quentin Assington, Frederick Hampstead and Thomas Yunn all scored the goals. In a change of tactics instead of using a strict formula for attacks they started to use more of a flowing, un-predictable approach. An it seemed to work. The Nojikans could nor respond to the sudden change in style and instead of being able to comprehensively defend against the formulaic attacks the Nojikan defense scrambled to read and effectively on the fly create a specific defense. Of course there were a lot of free-style attacks that failed on their intent. Partly because they were not so good but also partly because of the pure chance that some of the formations they had were correct.

The Nojikans were struggling most of the match in their own half, though the 55% possestion by the Bazalopes seems to indicate otherwise, the attack was stifling, but it was backed up by a defense lead by Arianna, almost ensuring that the Nojikans did not leave their half. OF course not 100% of the time was spent in the Nojikan half it was more of 80% but the few chances at the Bazalonian goal that they did have seemed to fall away into non-existance.

This brings us to the Quarter-finals, Hypocria vs Bazalonia at Campus Ground, Grappenhal. The Hypocrians showed what Bazalonia could be, demolishing Aurendia 6-2. The two very closely ranked teams Hypocria 7th, Bazalonia 8th. Anything can happen but from looking at the form of the Hypocrians it will look like they will continue their winning streak. Knocking the Bazalopes out in the Quarter finals and guaranteeing access to at least the 3PPO.

Bazalonia is expected to continue to languish in the AOCAF and perhaps indeed step asside for the Hypocrians.

Stars come up short vs. Gnomes

By Travis West
Daily Mail Staff Writer

The locker room was quiet. That fact wasn't a surprise when you found out that Sarzonia lost their match in penalties 3-2 after playing to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of football.

Even though Az-cz were a dangerous team that was able to put five goals past Vilita and Turori, the Stars held the Gnomes to one goal. The Gnomes launched 13 shots with seven of them on goal and goalkeeper Erik Conyer was equal to the task on six of them.

For their parts, Sarzonia's Matt Lynch and Reese Nichols again proved dangerous, with Lynch scoring the goal in the seventh minute that appeared to some observers to be enough. Sarzonia fired 17 shots on the Gnomes net, forcing the Gnomes netminder to make nine saves.

"We had our chances," a bleary eyed Lynch said after the match. "We just couldn't take advantage of them. We should have done better. I should have done better."

By all accounts, Lynch had no reason to fault himself. He made his one shot on goal count and he played an excellent decoy to give space to Nichols. Lynch also buried the first penalty shot of the penalty kick round, giving the Stars a brief 0:1 lead. Coach Alan Whittsig said Lynch was "the last player" who should blame himself.

"Matt is one of the biggest reasons we were still playing," Whittsig said. "He's one of the major reasons we're feeling the way we feel right now after making it to the 'octofinals.'"

The two teams battled back and forth for 90 minutes, the Gnomes desperate to launch an attack late in the second half and the Stars showing uncharacteristic restraint, waiting for the Gnomes to make that one critical blunder that would give them an opportunity to launch a deadly counter. However, 90 minutes plus stoppage time went by and neither team could dent the goal more than once.

One hundred twenty minutes of play still couldn't secure a winner, so it went to penalties. The Stars had won in penalties in their second match, defeating Delesa, but haven't played more than 90 minutes in a match since then. However, after Lynch and Nichols scored their goals, three Sarzonian shots went awry and Conyer parried the last shot off the woodwork and into the net for the match winner.

If anyone had told a Sarzonian at the onset of the tournament that the Stars would have battled valiantly but lost in the "octofinals" to a team that scored five goals in its previous match, most of them would have been pleased. After all, the expectations were low for this Stars team. But after a group stage that saw Sarzonia win three consecutive matches in convincing fashion, hopes were raised.

"I thought we'd get a crack at Pacitalia," Nichols said, his head hung. "It would do us a world of good to meet the Blue Foxes with a spot in the AOCAF semifinals at stake. Now, we'll never know how that match would have turned out."

For most of the assembled Stars players, they began to clear out their lockers and file out of the dressing room silently, giving credit to Az-cz for a match well played. Most players wouldn't go on record saying whom they'd support, but Lynch spoke for most of the team.

"I hope the Blue Foxes can pull it out," he said. "If not us, I hope it's them. It'd go a long way toward repairing relations between us and them internationally."

One down, three to go... Blue Foxes down Quakmybush
Zolà Meridiano will finish tournament in goal for Pacitalia after outstanding performance

GABALFA, BETTIA (PSN)
-- Ambrosino Giurimano scored both goals for the Blue Foxes as the Pacitalians advanced, full of hope and desire, to the quarterfinals, on the back of a solid 2-0 win, Thursday, over Quakmybush.

The defence played so well together, for the first time this tournament, so that the offence could rest and score only what it needed to advance to the quarterfinals. Substitute goalkeeper Abro Zolà Meridiano was the backbone for the defence today, so good that he has wrested away the starting job from a disappointing Cristianu Raduvani for the rest of the tournament. Today, manager Saganyarov confirmed that right-back Francesco Manzanotti was sent home with Raduvani, but that Nuno Cabana had been returned to the bench to backup the starting Dragomir Danut.

"We needed to stay under the players cap," Saganyarov said. "And they weren't pulling their weight, so they've been escorted home."

Giurimano's two goals both came off excellent corners from Andolfabio Vunghiasso (one from either side). The fans were rejoicing in the stands after The Magician's second tally, as the tempo of the match indicated that the marker was simply for insurance. And they were right -- as the Blue Foxes defence continued to work hard at getting the win locked up, in hunkering down for the final twenty-nine minutes.

"All cylinders were firing today," captain Veranace d'Amantano said. "It was great to have some fresh legs on the pitch too - that'll go a long way towards our continued success in this tournament."

Asked whether he'd talked to Manzanotti or Raduvani following the near-upset at the hands of the Schiavonians, d'Amantano said that he and Manzanotti had "exchanged some sentiments on the telephone" and that "Manzanotti said he didn't want to see himself in a Blue Foxes uniform ever again". If this comment is true, it has been widely toasted and lauded by the fans, as Manzanotti had long remained one of the least popular components of the starting XI for his tendency to dive and his mediocre defensive skills. In fact, Saganyarov said he "only kept Manzanotti on the starting roster because of his experience", and that the substitute, Mario Mauro Andornatini was "still not ready to start matches on a regular basis."

So, obviously the spat between Manzanotti and the rest of the team is heating up. But will it affect the Blue Foxes in the final stretch, with, at the very least, 180 minutes of play in the way of that gleaming trophy?

"No," d'Amantano said.

"Absolutely not," was the verdict of the manager. "That is to say the players that I've left on the squad I expect to maintain maturity and coolness towards the ordeal. They are indeed being mature and collected about our defensive issues and aren't going to let the actions or verbalising of one player affect the overall play of the squad."

Yes, there will likely be some bad blood, Saganyarov said, but "the mark of a good team is one that can move forward and ignore the attempts of a single player to bring down the whole ship because he's not getting his candy".

Raduvani had a different approach to the spat. "I don't know why Manza feels the way he does. At least for me, I know I played terribly this tournament and I got what I deserved - if you play like crap a manager like Saganyarov is not going to give you that second chance so easily. I'm going to get to work practising my keeping with [Sportiva Fentomeria, his club team], and I hope I can return to form for AOCAF20 tryouts. I don't think you'll find any bad blood... no bad blood from me."

Saganyarov has updated the starting roster, effective after the octofinals.
GK - Abro Zolà Meridiano (for Cristianu Raduvani)
LB - Paolo Sprivola (for Angelo Bordellatta)
    CB - Sergio San' Cristobal
RB - Giovanni Manta (for Francesco Manzanotti)
LHB - Dragomir Danut (for Nuno Cabana)
    RHB - Ferdinando Imperino
    LM - Andolfabio Vunghiasso
    CM - Michelangelo Mascagnano
    RM - Andreos Charisteas
    LF - Veranace d'Amantano
    RF - Ambrosino Giurimano

Saganyarov says he was optimistic the new lineup would continue to produce the required results to "lift that elusive cup". Next up the Blue Foxes face the Gnomes of Az-Cz, who knocked a Sarzonian side out, one which had enjoyed four wins in the group stage after returning for the first time in five AOCAFs. Had the Stars won, it would have set up the first rematch of the Blue Foxes and Stars since U21 World Cup 16, where the Pacitalians won a group stage thriller, 3-2. Instead, both sides' fans feel a pang of disappointment at the fact that such a matchup won't happen in the quarterfinals. But for the Sarzonians, it's moreso because their team went out rather prematurely for the level of effort they showed and the results they produced, a belief shared by most observers of this competition.

Amda-Mo: And the Gnomes definitely clinched their best AOCAF performance ever with a heart-stopping win over Sarzonia 3-2 on Penalty Kicks.

Lur-Mn: And when that I really need to apologize to my friend Zax-Im. I thought his poor coaching was the reason for the bad start to the tournament, but five straight victories including taking down the big names of V&T, Bazalonia, Krytenia and now the Stars proves that he's doing a great job.

Amda-Mo: Indeed. Considering this is his first head coaching experience you'd have to say an incredible job. No one, not even coach Khim and coach Hawdon were able to get the Pink & Green this far into an AOCAF.

Lur-Mn: Indeed. And the way he rallied the team today both from the deficit and for Penalty Kicks was great.

Amda-Mo: What do you mean?

Lur-Mn: Well Sarzonia was outplaying us and it looked like we might well crash out 1-0. But he didn't panic and pulled the right strings. Sending on El-Iot was just brilliant. The kid just wasn't fazed by the pressure and fought through a lot of traffic to slot in a rebound of Ho-Lee Chung.

Amda-Mo: And in PKs?

Lur-Mn: Well first off he learned the trick of saving kickers for penalties. The Az-cz trademark endurance means that we don't have to make subs for tired players and can bring in players just to stand at the penalty spot. And after following both Sarzonian misses with misses of our own Fe-Do was nervous as can be but Zax-Im got him in a good enough mindset to just get the goal.

Amda-Mo: What are your thoughts on the rest of the match.

Lur-Mn: Well mostly I'm glad I won. Sarzonia showed the skill and determination that made a lot of Az-czzers, even Il-Lur, nervous about this match. Thankfully the Gnomes didn't make any mistakes that allowed Sarzonia to beat us. They hoped we'd beat ourselves and didn't, with the only self inflicted error being Gs-Kin's bad miss in the penalties.

Amda-Mo: Does scoring only one goal in a 120 minute match worry you?

Lur-Mn: No. Sarzonia were playing well back looking to counter so there wasn't much room for attacking. I don't think our strikers played poorly but Sarzonia's defense and goaltending were quite good. It wasn't bad play of ours that made it a 1-1 draw but good play of theirs.

Amda-Mo: Looking ahead to Pacitalia, what are your thoughts?

Lur-Mn: They thwunked our Quakmybushian friends right good. They're the favorites in this match, possibly for the whole tournament, and deservedly so. They're an excellent squad. It'll take an inspired performance to knock them off, but we can do it.

Amda-Mo: What'll be key?

Lur-Mn: Agression. I don't think there's a chance in hell we'll shut them out so we've just got to get good attacks and find goals.

Amda-Mo: Any final thoughts?

Lur-Mn: Just one. I'd like to point how eerily similar our path up to this point has been to our run in World Cup 33. In both tournaments we lose an early match in disappointing fashion to a first time entrant. Then we rebound to win the rest of our group matches, including beating the team that tops the group and fall just short on tiebreakers to slot into second place. Then we fall behind in the 2nd round match, score a late goal to get into extra time, where neither team scores than slip by with just a single penalty of seperation, and as a reward face the hottest team in the tournament. With any luck we'll duplicate the result we got against Schiavonia here.

Amda-Mo: One can certainly hope so.

Hawks down Kryties

If you remember the AOCAF XVI match against Oliverry, then you know how this AOCAF XIX match against Krytenia went. Once again, Lamoni scored a goal early, and basically toyed with the Kryties. Best estimates placed the Kryties in the Lamonian half of the field an astonishingly low ten percent of the time; which was combined with excellent Lamonian goal keeping to keep the Kryties from scoring at all. Of course, having the Hawks simply run around with the ball and playing keep away from the Kryties didn't help them either.

"This was just like a particularly bad practice session," said Gerhardt Gomeric. "We scored the goal, and basically ran with the ball for the remaining eighty five minutes. It was so pathetic that I actually pitied the Krytenians. I'm much rather looking forward to our next match, though. It's always good to play with a close friend."

The Hawks have their next match with Nedalia, who is looking worse for wear. They can defeat anyone if they put their minds to it, but they seem to be doing that ever less often. As the Lamonian citizen walking the street puts it, "The Nedalian AOCAF Lion has lost it's teeth, but not it's cunning." Most bookies put the Hawks as having an eighty five percent chance of winning this match; and most of them are hoping that they do. It would put them with NEWI Cefn Druids as the exclusive members of the elite AOCAF "Club Three." Club Three is for those nations that have won the AOCAF three times in a row, and the Hawks currently have an excellent shot at making it into the 'club.'

Now for our predictions:

Lamoni (1) v Nedalia (13)

We are going full steam ahead in the AOCAF rankings, with two consecutive AOCAF cups to our name. Nedalia is slip sliding away, but it is foolish to discount them.

Verdict: Hawks continue to apply for Club Three

Pacitalia (6) v Az-cz (15)

Both of these teams have been playing well, but Pacitalia has been stopping for no one.

Verdict: Pacitalia runs right past Az-cz

Hypocria (7) v Bazalonia (8)

Bazalonia has defied many expectations to be here, while Hypocria is in top form. It's foolish to discount our SDL allies here, but they won't make it.

Verdict: Hypocria to the Final Four

V/T (5) v Bettia (2)

A battle of two AOCAF giants; the rest of the region will sigh with relief that one of them is going home after this match.

Verdict: Too close to call

Hawks win again, face oldest rival next

(As seen on LBC 2's Nightly Sportsline)

(OOC: Check Lamoni's wiki for what LBC 2 is the equivalent of. Vil, i'm allowing you to do whatever you want with the 'unidentified man' who stole your ugly ass kit.)

IC: The male anchor on Nightly Sportsline was a tall, athletic looking man with swarthy skin, and a 'honest' face. His name was Kevin Cole, and he began the AOCAF segment of the show.

---------------------------------------------------

Gerhardt Gomeric was the one to score the game winning goal in the Hawks match against Nedalia. The Lemnos FC striker scored in the thirtieth minute with a scissor kick that made it past the Nedalian goalkeeper. This was the only goal of the match.

Like the last match against the Kryties, this match with Nedalia finished with a score of 1-0; in the Hawks favor. While a knockouts win means advancement (and there is no question that that is a good thing), we would have liked to have seen more goals scored against both the Kryties and the Nedalians. The reason for this is that the Hawks will face their oldest AOCAF rival ever in their next match.

Who are these really old rivals, you might ask? None other than the combined team of Vilita/Turori. The rivalry between the Hawks and the Vilitans ALONE goes all the way back to the first AOCAF that Lamoni played in (AOCAF III). Despite being a newcomer to the AOCAF at that time, the Hawks made it to the knockouts on their first attempt, and managed to defeat Vilita. Many Lamoni wins against Vilita later, the record for Lamoni/Vilita matches is still in Lamoni's favor.

*Music plays and "LBC 2 NEWSBREAK" appears on the screen. A different voice begins talking*

--------------------------------------------------------------
LBC 2 NEWSBREAK

We now interrupt for this announcement. An unconfirmed report has stated that an unidentified person has broken into the Vilita/Turori AOCAF HQ, and has stolen their dreadful kit; replacing it with the following:

user posted image

We now take you back to Nightly Sportsline.
--------------------------------------------------------------

*The anchor cleared his throat and continued*

The upcoming match against the Eel-Cat thingys is sure to be a hard fought, yet close match. We are predicting a scoreline along the line of Lamoni 3-2 Vilita/Turori. Both teams have a lot of emotion invested in this rivalry, and it is a match that will be watched around the region; especially in the nations of Pacitalia and Hypocria. If the Hawks defeat V/T, then they will face one of these two nations in the Hawks quest to win their third straight AOCAF cup.

Let's look at the history Lamoni has with these teams:

Pacitalia - The Hawks are widely regarded as the 'boogeymen' of the Pacitalian AOCAF squads; and with good reason. We have defeated every major chance that the Pacitalians have had to win the AOCAF cup to date. If Lamoni faces Pacitalia in the cup match, then we wouldn't mind if history repeated itself.

Hypocria - We've faced this team about four times, total. We were defeated in three of these matches, but in our last match, we defeated Hypocria, and things are looking good for our ability to repeat that feat if we face the Hyppos in the cup match. Both Hypocria and Pacitalia are undefeated to date in AOCAF XIX, but that will change with this match.

And now for a commercial break.

*Commercial plays*
