Gnomes trump Aces

With their backs against the wall after a stunning crushing loss to the strange creatures of Ulzaxid the Gnomes knew that a loss to Krytenia would significantly reduce their chances of qualification and they came out like a determined team.

The Gnomes were once agained paced by the two offensive stars who had scored for them so far. First Fe-Do opened up the scoring in the 18th minute when Shockey put through a beautiful long ball. Ho-Lee Chung doubled the score line only four minutes later with Hu-35 making a beautiful steal and quickly getting it to Chung who made a perfectly timed run to sneak past the defense and fire the ball in on the Krytenian goal as the keeper stood powerless to stop the Gnome attack.

The Aces being a proud nation, and also being part of the morass of teams looking for that extra spot. After their big win against Bazalonia the killer loss to 95X meant that they were in serious trouble if they dropped to the Gnomes, leaving just two games left to earn points in. Playing like a team about to run out of time they were smoking hot producing a myriad of chances finally slipping one past Za-Rv in the 68th minute.

The Aces continued to force the issue, and a number of times nearly equalized, but one Az-cz counter was all it took to put the game out of reach. Ca-Fu made a nice take away and dribbled a bit of the ways up the pitch. He then slung the ball forward to Hu-35, who was quickly fouled by a Krytenian player. Hu-35 made a beautiful freekick which connected with the foot of Ho-Lee Chung, putting the game out of reach, himself on top of the Az-cz scoring charts for this competition, and an extra point onto the table for the Gnomes. The goal came in the 81st minute leaving just 9 minutes for Krytenia to try to strike back.

The win moves the Gnomes up to third place on the group stage and gives them a very good shot at advancing, especially considering they're part of the group that has three games left. Next up is a big match against Bazalonia, who the Gnomes have only ever beaten in friendlies. A win there would just about see the Gnomes through to the second round of the competition.

To be sporting against another of the weaker teams in the competition the Ulzaxid's decided that none of their players would be competing with more than two of their parts on the pitch. All 11 players, plus possible subs, would be just the slimes and ferrets. That meant that the whole team would be at a significant size disadvantage to the Ereelanders. The Ereelanders looked as suprised as anyone to see the team come out onto the pitch.

However that didn't mean that the team of Ulzaxids wasn't doing their darndest to win the match, just that they didn't think it was fair to use much of their morphed power and indeed they were dead on correct.

While against Vilita it was a player who took his name from a Vilitan who did the damage and against Az-cz it was a player who took his name from an Az-czzer who did the damage. However, there are no legendary Ereelanders, so the goals were spread evenly throughout the Ulzaxid contingent.

Syku Lyku opened the scoring in the 19th minute as he crawled through the legs of the tall Ereeland defender and squeezed the ball through on goal. The second goal came from Simeone Di Bradini who coralled a cross from Tzimisces and put the Ulzaxids up by two in the 38th minute.

However of course for a team with only one defender pitching a shutout is very very difficult and the Ereelanders answered back with a single goal before the half.

But the Ulzaxids weren't concerned and opened the second half by watching Tzimisces dribble around a number of Ereeland defenders and blast the ball in by himself. The final goal of the half came in minute number 77 as Sani Luvo tapped in the rebound off of a poorly kept shot from Pizelkaxrovsky.

Amazingly the win propelled Ulzaxid to second in the group of death after four match days, despite having one of the early byes and having played the top of the group in Vilita & Turori and the third team in the group in Az-cz.

As what was becoming an Ulzaxid tradition coach Stuart Abdul-Rahim gave a short press conference today. "Well we tried to play fair with the Ereelanders, but they're just not a good team. No one else left on our schedule should expect such treatment. We're already giving every team in the group a big break by not playing full form. I promise you that with our natural athletic ability there's no way we'd lose like that."

Fans Gone Mad

After another defeat, 2-1 for Nojika, the fans have gone crazy on the United teams manager and his lack of choice for the new head coach, but now it seems that we will look abroad for this person and have found a possible man from the long time allie of the United Kingdom of Oceania. The coach in question? Richard Loew of the Oceania Port Royal Raiders, four time champion of the local soccer league. He is the first person not Delesian that has coached the team. Although we here would have to give him some credit to being Delesian, as he was born Axcliffe just off of the mainland coast, information on the colony can be found by clicking the link provided. Athough he has made no official press release about becoming the coach, reporters have seen him arriving at the Bettia International Airport and driving to the practise field were the United team was training. Let us hope this man brings the team around to make it past the first cuts.

Back to the past game, it looked at first like an even game from the start, the teams on an even block, even when the first goal was scored by a Nojika striker, chiping Javier Topper the United keeper, because the United team struck back with a rocket into the Nojika made possible by Norbert Tison. And until the final minutes it looked as though there would be extra time, but a simple misjudgement by a United Defender, opening a small hole in the defence line allowed the same Nojika stiker slip by, placing a simple shot past the United Keeper. Victory was in Nojika hands at that moment as the ref blew his whistle, although the United player's anger was evident, they put on there smiles and shook hands with the victors and walked off the pitch with their heads held high. They could the soon victory soon to come, the new coach was arriving that night. A chance for the team to prove is stuff under true organization.

MP Fall to Hawks in Tight Game

Group D – Manhattan Prime 2:3 Lamoni

Manhattan Prime: Dreygo 25mins, DeSilva 80mins
Lamoni: Farani 15mins, Quest 46mins, Aruru 51mins

Manhattan Prime were defeated in a close 3-2 game yesterday in what was their 3rd Group D match, at the hands of old rivals Lamoni.

Drugah Farani opened the scoring for Lamoni in the 15th minute with a spectacular goal, running the length of the field and bamboozling the Manhattanite defense. With only the keeper to beat Farani’s shot clattered off the bar, only for him to put home the rebound to make the score 1-0.

However the Chippers were back in the game 10 minutes later with an almost as classy scissor kick from Vykk Dreygo, and staunch defending from both sides meant that neither could make a breakthrough in the 1st half.

In the beginning of the 2nd Lamoni pulled ahead again with a simple tap-in from Zan Quest after a pass found the Chippers’ defense beaten. The Hawks added a 3rd within 5 minutes through an Aruru bicycle kick. The Lamonian seemed to fall heavily in his sporting attempt to avoid colliding with Ben Wilde, but he turned out to be fine.

Lamoni did suffer an injury in bizarre fashion later on however, as a streaker charged onto the pitch, and attacked Kendrick Zingg whilst the striker was taking a shot, making him shoot wide. The streaker was arrested, but the Lamonian striker had to be stretchered off injured. Manhattanite officials have filed a complaint with the Bettian authorities demanding that security be evaluated at the grounds to prevent members of the public entering the pitch again and putting players at risk.

The confusion seemed to shake the Lamonian defense, and Manhattan Prime pulled the score back to 3-2 through a Felix DeSilva goal in the 80th minute. However renewed Manhattanite pressure was unable to secure an equaliser.

Manhattan Prime Team:

Clive Hilton (GK)

Ben Wilde (LB)

Ethan Smith (DMC)
Michael Donavan (MC)
Felix DeSilva (AML)

Manhattan Herald – 26th March 2007
Latest report from AOCAF 19

Penalty proves enough to ease past Stars

Group D – Manhattan Prime 1:0 Sarzonia

Manhattan Prime: Dreygo 42mins
Sarzonia:

Manhattan Prime have notched up their 2nd win of AOCAF 19 to put themselves in a fairly strong position to qualify from Group D, climbing the table to 3rd. The Chippers brushed past close allies Sarzonia by a Vykk Dreygo penalty at Polperro Park, Bettia.

Sarzonia played a fairly defensive game, with determined defending keeping an enthusiastic Chippers strike force to a mere 6 shots on targets, compared to 9 for the Stars. However Sarzonia’s attacking play let them down, and they failed to convert their chances.

Still it was the Sarzonians who nearly opening the scoring, with striker Lynch splitting the Manhattanite defense in two by wrong footing Akita and Clarke and powering a shot at goal. However Clive Hilton in the Manhattan Prime goal made an amazing save, getting a hand to the ball and managing to flicking it onto the crossbar for a corner, and then continuing his good form by easily claiming the resulting corner.

Then in the 42min it was Manhattan Prime’s turn to come close as Vykk Dreygo beat a defender ad lined up what looked a clear goal, before being tackled by the Sarzonian goalkeeper. The Referee showed Erik Conyer the red card, and awarded a penalty to Manhattan Prime, which Dreygo coolly slotted past reserve goalkeeper Albright. In response the Sarzonian team moved to a more defensive formation, and with only 10 players, it was relatively simple for the Chippers to hold on for the win and the vital 3 points.

As for Sarzonia, their concerns lie more with their suspended goalkeeper for the next game against Nojika, in which young Kelvin Russell will be forced to deputize.

Manhattan Prime Team:

Clive Hilton (GK)

Lucas Thompson (RB)
John Clarke (CB)
Karl Heinze (CB)
Ben Wilde (LB)

Ethan Smith (DMC)
Michael Donavan (MC)
Felix DeSilva (AML)
Mashashi Takamura (AMR)

He almost couldn't contain his excitement. A team that at one time was a regional (and world) football powerhouse that was now bereft of the sort of signature match it needed to prove it belonged on the pitch again found its way.

Despite having their starting goalkeeper suspended for what many on the team freely called a dubious send off and being forced to rely on 23-year-old neophyte keeper Kelvin Russell in the pipes, the Stars got the complete game Coach Alan Whittsig so desperately wanted in a 3:1 win over Nojika.

However, it wasn't the goalkeeper, the second youngest of the 18 players to don a Sarzonia kit in this AOCAF tournament, who was exulting as if he'd just scored the winning penalty in the World Cup final. Russell's reaction was rather subdued, particularly since he made three highlight-reel saves against the Nojikan attack. He barely pumped his fist for a second as his teammates surrounded him, enthusiastically patting him on the head.

Rather, it was Whittsig who was whooping it up. He smiled like he hadn't smiled since the first day of training. He smiled like he hadn't smiled since he coached Joe Gibbs University to its first national title in 11 years. He smiled like he hadn't smiled since he was the coach of the Woodstock Wild the last time it won a SFC Cup title.

"That's the kind of game I knew you could play!" he shouted at his lads before he left the locker room to address the media. When he walked in, Woodstock Daily Mail reporter Travis West noticed Whittsig's beaming smile.

"What can I say, we played a full 90 minute match," Whittsig said for his opening statement. "This time, we had everything working. Offence, defence, goalkeeping. It was about as well as I've seen us play since isolation."

"Coach, you're not normally known for smiling after a group stage win or a regular season win," West said. "Can you tell me what was different about this match?"

"We played about as perfect a game as we've played since we assembled this team," Whittsig said. "To use our third goalkeeper because Erik Conyer was out on a suspension and to still get an outright win when we needed it was a real bright spot. I don't think I could be any prouder of my lads."

"What do you think of your team's chances of getting through to the knockout stages?"

"A lot better than they were about two hours ago," Whittsig said, drawing a laugh from some assembled in the press room. West wrote down a note in his notebook about the sparkle in Whittsig's eyes and the smile that had turned into a smirk. "Don't get me wrong," Whittsig said, "we've still got a tough road to travel. But we've taken a critical first step toward re-establishing ourselves. That's worth a lot."

After answering a few more questions, Whittsig turned around and walked back to the locker room, where he resumed his celebratory acts of just moments ago. The Stars would be right back at it in training the next day, but for one night at least, Sarzonia and its supporters had a match they could savor.

Victory for the Back and Red!

Was it the new coach? Or was it just luck? Delesa and Demot have faced each other since the days of the BoF at the dawn of the National team at the international level. Yes and even today it is a intense battle between the two to see who comes out on top, and today it was Delesa, but just by the skin of our teeth. The game remained 0-0 until the final whistle of regulation playing time, and then remained 0-0 through extra time, sending the two teams into a shoot out and only then did Delesa come out on top by one goal. Who were the men with the golden feet? Well one was Michael McShane, the stiker that all Delesian youth strive to be. And the other was the right hand man of Michael, Jason Clare, our el capitano on the defence. Demot's own David Masteron scored the goal to ensure not a shut out for the United team.

Durring the match, the ball was mostly fought at center pitch, the ball constantly changing hands. The possession percentage at the end of the match? 52% for Delesa and 48% Demot. But thats not to say the keepers didn't have an easy game, both tenders were dancing on their heads to ensure their own teams victory, although it's not right to say the best team came out on top, but rather the lucky team. The United team exchanged jerseys at the end of the match, a sign of respect, seen not too often by any team, as Delesian players tend to keep to themselves.

Coach Richard Loew was present on the side of the pitch, cheering and cursing at his new players. It after a victory, after the first game played as head coach and a victory over such evenly matched teams, it is would be easy to believe that Richard has a stable career as the head coach, and now a part of the United family. Glad to have you on our side and with us Richard.

Taking care of business: Raptors outfoxed
Another big win keeps the Pacitalians on track to win Group A

CEFFINTON, Y GWLAD TEG, BETTIA (PSN)
-- Pacitalia's offence didn't stop moving after big wins over Bettia and Nedalia, once again firing up to score a trio of beauties in another important win, 3-1, over the Aurendia Raptors. The win ramped up the Blue Foxes' overall record in the group stage to a resilient 4-0-0 with four bonus points, to stand three points clear of the host and group's top seed, the Bettian Aroras.

It was Ashley Campbell who actually opened the scoring, giving the Raptors an early advantage just a quarter of an hour in. But Michelangelo Mascagnano equalised just eight minutes later off a wide-angle shot, and after a team talk at halftime, Ambrosino Giurimano came out flying, blasting through the Raptors' defensive core and nailing the ball into the middle of the net past a baffled Kevin Sullivan. Giurimano's goal gave the Blue Foxes the lead for good and it was Andreos Charisteas' insurance marker seven minutes later that sealed the deal for the Pacitalian squad.

After scoring their third and final goal of the match the Blue Foxes' defence took over and stuffed the Raptors, allowing no chances or shots in the final 35 minutes of play.

"We played really well out there today," captain Veranace d'Amantano. "I thought we covered all the zones with gusto and we were good on all our chances. All three of our goals were an absolute treat to watch and I think all the fans went home happy with the way both teams played."

"Yeah, I think the Raptors played good football for having only gotten a goal out of this," the captain's linemate, Giurimano, chimed in. "We were a bit stunned at the beginning; they came out flying in the first few minutes but we were able to equalise the score and settle them down."

Giurimano's goal was his third in the last two matches and fourth in the tournament; the striker is no doubt on fire after pledging to improve his play following Pacitalia's 4-1 win over the Lions on match day two. Still, manager Sergei Saganyarov wasn't fully pleased with how well "The Magician" and CF Mandragora striker stepped up his game.

"He could be doing a bit more offensively," Saganyarov grunted post-match. "I mean to say that he's not setting up chances for other players where we could score other goals. It's all well and good to be creating goals and offence for us but it also involves setting up offensive chances for his linemate and the midfield. And he's talented enough to do that, no question."

It's the Capitalizt SLANI next for the powered-up Blue Foxes, who are riding high after their fourth win of the group stage, and have locked up at least a knockouts berth with a nine-point lead over the now-fifth place Schiavonians. Coincidentally, those newcomer Schiavonian footballers are the last opponent for the Foxes in the group stage. Aurendia moves on to play Atheistic Right and will no doubt be looking to earn some points off the Darwinists after coming off their match here obviously disappointed.

From Ceffinton, Y Gwlad Teg, Bettia:
Aurendia 1 : 3 Pacitalia

AUR: A. Campbell 15'
PAC: Mascagnano 23' / Giurimano 48' / Charisteas 55'

NEXT UP: ATR v AUR, PAC v SLA
Pacitalia
The best place on earth.

OOC: This is my RP for MD7's game since I have a bye on MD6.

Hawks defeat Ubundi

Today's win against AOCAF newcomers Ubundi places Lamoni in the undisputed first seed of Group D, and also places them with an almost certain Group D title; unless second seed Nojika pulls off another surprise, or the Hawks lose to Delesa.

The Hawks have earned a bye date before their last group stage match against Delesa. Delesa is currently third in Group D, coming off of a 2-1 penalty win against Demot. The Hawks will have a normal practice session in the morning, but will take the afternoon to explore the Bettian city of Gabalfa.

Interviewed Lamonian fans in Bettia have stated that they would likely root for Sarzonia in their match against Demot on the Hawks bye date.

With the dissolution of the United Isles of Myrtannia, Coach McNany has formally filed for Lamonian citizenship, and her request is likely to be granted; as Lamoni is taking in Myrtannian refugees. Not to mention that she is the AOCAF squad's coach. Her 8.5 year old son (Matthew Stone McNany), is named in the citizenship request as well.

In match related news, Forward Gerhardt Gomeric completed the hat trick against Ubundi, scoring all three Lamonian goals, while an unknown Ubundian scored their lone goal of the match; which went into extra time.

Enjoy the bye date!

True rivalry

The Gnomes had a bit of trepadation going into their match against Bazalonia, a team who's best result in a competition counting to a match was a draw that saw both teams tumble out. But the tide had indeed been turning starting with that draw. And it has turned entirely with the 2-0 victory earned by the young Robbers.

After struggling in a number of early matches against the Bazalopes the Az-czzers finally found a measure of success in World Cup 32 holding the Bazalopes to a draw. The nation finally earned a victory against Bazalonia in Water Polo, then added a win in Bazalonia against the Bazalopes in a friendly during World Cup 33.

So recent results were on their side, even if history still favored the Bazalopes by and large. With a number of Az-czid players on this squad also having lost to the Bazalopes last AOCAF revenge was definitely wanted. Ho-Lee Chung once again spearheaded the Az-cz attack and Shockey and Ca-Fu once again patrolled the back beautifully.

Ho-Lee chung scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 33rd minute to give the Gnomes a feeling that a win would actually be possible against a killer B. With Ricky Yunn being basically wiped out by Shockey's brilliant defensive work the Gnomes were free to push the pressure even more after Ho-Lee Chung's goal. Soon after they found the second with Hu-35 adding his name to the record books in the 37th minute leading to the 2-0 half time score.

The Gnomes were in a bit of a quandry as to whether to push the attack and try for the extra point or to play conservative with their lead and not risk it. Zax-Im being a bit of a conservative minded defensive midfielder made the decision to pull back and try to play to preserve the lead. And preserve they did with the Bazalonian team frustrated for chances and basically entirely locked down.

The win is a big one for Az-cz in AOCAF history. Both their first win over good friend and rival, but also propels them to a good position in the group. Having already played Bazalonia, Krytenia and upstarts Ulzaxid the Pink & Green find themselves with a good shot at second place, despite being a defensive side in a tournament designed for attacking.

After two wins in a row things were looking good for Ulzaxid who was somehow in second place. But being rank amateurs meant that good things would probably have to come to an end, and that they did against Krytenia, but did so in a most controversial way.

Krytenia scored first in the 9th minute to put themselves ahead, but Ulzaxid proved their mettle by answering quickly in the 17th minute from the leg of Ari Smith starting in place of Syku Lyku. From there the game turned into an up and down battle with Ulzaxid getting slightly better of it but both teams leaving plenty of good chances unanswered.

The game was still tied late in the match when the ref made a very curious decision that doomed the Ulzaxids. An Ulzaxid player touched the ball with his prehensile tail in his own penalty box and the ref awarded the Krytenians a penalty kick, which they slotted home, with just 12 minutes left in the match. This being a team of silent telepaths, there was no voicing of complaints, but the Ulzaxids were definitely shocked by the call. They tried to force things foward even more, but left themselves totally unguarded at the back and quick Krytenian counter attack sealed the deal and ended the nice run for the Ulzaxid team.

After the match coach Rahim had this to say. "I think the refs need to look at whether or not a prehensile tail is really the same think as a hand. I don't think so, but they thought it was. That's the way things go. We still had plenty of chances to score and didn't do it, so we only have ourselves to blame. I just hope this leads to a clarification of just what limbs exactly are unusable. This leaning towards bipedal humanoids needs to be adjusted."

Woodstock Daily Mail

Mixed feelings for Stars, supporters

By Travis West
Daily Mail Staff Writer

Gabalfa, Bettia (27 March 2007) -- You'd think after back-to-back 3-1 victories vaulted them into third place in Group D with one match remaining that the Sarzonian national football team would feel nothing but pleased. You'd think the team wouldn't eye the standings anxiously, hoping against hope for results to fall a certain way since they're four points clear of fifth place with one match remaining.

But you'd be wrong.

Even though the Stars have won back-to-back results after their 1:3 win over Demot and taken four standings points from each match and have one match remaining versus cellar dwelling Ubundi, they viewed the results with some concern. Close allies and friends Manhattan Prime lost their match by a 1:0 margin to Nojika, a team the Stars beat convincingly the last time out. The Chippers find themselves four points behind Delesa for the fourth and final knockout round berth with one match remaining and must score at least three goals and hope Delesa loses outright to have any chance of claiming the fourth spot.

"We normally don't focus on the results of other matches," Coach Alan Whittsig said. "We don't like to try to worry about things we can't control. But a little air was let out of the room when we saw the [Manhattan Prime] result. It took a little wind out of our sails."

For their part, the Stars (2-1-0-2, 10 points) saw forward Reese Nichols (two goals, one assist) break out of a slump and saw him team up with forward Matt Lynch (one goal, two assists) on a goal that some supporters rank as one of the all-time greatest goals in Sarzonian history. Lynch faked out three Ubundi defenders and fired a shot with his off foot past the sprawling goalkeeper to give the Stars a 2:1 lead in the 57th minute.

"I couldn't swing my right leg around in time," Lynch said with a toothy grin and a slight chuckle that suggested he was as amazed as many of the players and fans were. "I just shot it and hoped for the best, you know?"

"I've been watching this team since AOCAF I," said Leonard Spencer, an accountant in Portland who made the trip to watch the first Stars international competition since before isolation. "And I don't remember ever seeing a better goal than the one Mattie scored."

Whittsig can. But that goal was scored in the World Cup XXII final, which Sarzonia won handily over Oaker 4:0 to capture its first and only World Cup title, and snag the world's number one ranking. The Stars held it for four cups, dropping down after a World Cup XXVI Stars officials still call "a travesty" after several controversial calls and what many in the organisation refer to as "questionable" officiating throughout the tournament.

But Nichols said now wasn't the time to focus on the past. He said his team's present looks pretty good, and the future looks bright.

"We're starting to recapture a bit of that old Stars magic," Nichols said. "It feels good.

"Now if the Chippers can make it to the next round with us, it'll feel even better."

Two in a Row?
Thanks to the Coach? We think so!

Victory comes once again to the Black and Red. Ubundi 1-2 United. Yes in the time that Richard has been the coach (which has been two games) the United has come out on top. Is it just luck, or is this coach really worth something? Well only time will tell. Currently Delesa has set the cruise conrol on, and is sitting back and enjoying the ride. The GM made it clear that this time around is once again not to get past the cuts, but just as a test run for the Coach, but it would seem that if we were to make it past the cuts, well it would be the first time in United history to make it past the cuts in the AOCAF.

The match started of fine enough, and with a punch. Delesa chipped in the first goal within the first 24 minutes, our Fernando Kellett, who usually is a hot ticket has not shown his true colours here at the AOCAF. Then once again the United Black struck again with another goal, a corner kick then header, scored by Norbert Tison in the 43rd minute. Yes at that point the United were heading into a two goal lead. But once the second half started, it was obivious that the United players came out cocky, and the Ubundi came out determined. There were several tense shots made by several Ubundi players looking for revenge, but could not by one until the 62nd minute. And the Ubundi players continued there path of distruction as they attempted to gain an equalizer before the final whistle was blown, but by god's grace, the ref blew the whistle and the United players stepped off the field with their heads head a little low, the cocky attitude had cost them a 2-0 win. It was possible to see, after most fans had cleared the stands, the United team was back out on the pitch running laps, possibly a punishment treatment by the coach, or a new training schedule set down by Richard?
