The United Isles of Myrtannia and the MAFC officially welcome all 16 participants to the inaugural Atlantian Oceania Under-21 Football Cup! With all the teams level, who knows who will walk out with the Cup when all is said and done? Can the Starblaydis dominate in the U-21 field as well as they have in the conventional AOCAF? Will Vilita & Turori make it 2 for 2 in regional footballing competitions? Or will Pacitalia, Lamoni, or Nedalia rise to the challenge to hoist a regional cup for the first time? Perhaps Bettia's Young 'Uns will take the Cup home. Or can the Myrtannia Nymphs run the guantlet and win one for the home crowd? In a short time, we will find out for certain.

In Nos-Tf's office

"President Nos-Tf," began Jee-Wilikers "it seems we've signed up for the AOU21 competition. Do you know what it is?"

"Yeah. I wasn't really planning on sending a team, but I guess they needed us to make numbers." Football Federation President Nos-Tf replied.

"So what kind of a tournament is it."

"Football."

"Yeah, I got that part. But didn't the AOCAF, just finish."

"Yeah but this is the U21 tournament. It's for people under 21 kilograms, IE little kids"

"Are you sure about that? It seems kind of strange."

"Yeah I thought it strange too. I guess people in Atlantian Oceania just love their babies."

"Well we do too. Our cute little baby gnomes will blow them away."

"How are we going to choose the team?"

"That's easy. Photo contest. Have parents and guardians send pictures of their tykes playing football. We choose the 20 cutest and they get to go."

"Good idea. What about a coach?"

"A coach. They're kids. We'll send all the parents and when we get their we'll have a meeting and choose from them. We don't need a real coach. They're little kids."

"Alright. I'm sure we'll bowl the other nations over with our cuteness."

"For sure. You should see the pink & green jammies we've got made up. They're absolutely adorable."

"If you say so boss."

"Just wait till you have kids Jee-Wilikers"

James Gaines looked over his material on his desk, in depth analysis of the BazaB's performance in the latest AOCAF.

"Stuff it! Tell the BazaB's it's not worth continueing a National 'B' Squad they are just not performing. Tell the U21's that they are going to the AOCAF." After spending hours trawling through half-hearted reports and repeated statements 'the team is going to get better'. James was just had it with the Bazalonian B side. The only problem is that the U21's have not seen much action only that u21's World Cup that was held ages ago... maybe In Jerusalem. Who knows it was so long ago.

Either way. The u21's needed some action and soon if they where eve3r going to be considered a serious threat in the AOCAF... And then finally he noticed a letter from the Myrtannians. A region-wide U21 tournament. Just the thing that the Bazacubs needed, e looked at the date... noticed it was a few months old and yelled.

"How come I didn't see this before" to his secretary which shrugged and said
"If you had kept your desk clean you might have noticed it." and went on about her business.

She was right of course and James knew it, He opened the letter and read the contents..

"Hot damn, just the thing the Bazacubs need... Ursula, get in here I need to dictate a letter to Myrtannia"

Of course Ursula was his secretary and with all the enthusiasm that exudes from a sloth took down the letter to the Myrtannians and after much grammatical editing she finally had a letter accepting the Bazacubs entrance into the AO u21 tournament.

Many months later, James had practically forgotten about it, he was a busy man trying to keep the national team sponsors happy and trying to oversee the A and B leagues. However one thing had changed, his desk was now somewhat tidy. Well, enough for him to notice a new letter from Mryrannian giving the details of the upcoming tournament. The draws and matchdays... James looked over the document.

Group D, with the hosts, the Gnomes from Az-Cz and Lamoni. All nations that we are at least friendly politically with Myrtannia and Lamoni are allies and Az-Cz would almost be a de-facto ally. All that asside, facing the hosts and Lamoni in the one group is always going to be tough. And with those gnomes of Az-Cz anything is possible. He didn't want to use the old cliche'd term "Group of Death", but well it fitted. Lamoni, a soccer stalwart of the AOCAF, Mrytannia the hosts who are never to be written out of a home tournament and Az-Cz who seem to be able to pull upsets out of the air.

This was going to be one tough group. Even with no idea of the teams the other nations where sending. Though James did wonder what it would take to get a top 2 spot in the group, and he shuddered.

The Next week the Bazacubs flew on BazAir to Myrtannia for the tournament, no one really cared back home noting that it is not a world cup or even a good AOCAF. It had no history behind it, but for the Bazacubs it was like they where prepared to make history. To the Winner goes the spoils and they were aiming not only to get to the knockout stage. They were planning to win. The first AO u21 tournament in Bazalonian hands... but the tournament had yet to even start and in a group like this anything could happen.

V&T Off to Scandon Island
Recent acquisition Misrantis awaits!

Fresh off their triumph in their first joint entry into the Atlantian Oceania Cup of Association Football, The Vilita and Turori Jungle Eels / Eel Cat things will bounce back into action in the first ever Atlantian Oceania Under 21 Championships to be held in Myrtannia.

The Vilita & Turori side will take a very similar appearance to the fairly young side that took the AOCAF title. At the request of the Vilitan Football Assocation, the brothers Mumamba, Lorenzo and Malaino, well once again coach the side. Another familiar face will be dual-nationality phenom Kristofer Kilpter, who has yet to commit his future to either Vilita or Turori, but his star quality performances en route to the AOCAF title have certainly indicated that whichever nation he does finally choose to represent in the World Cup will certainly be gaining a quality footballer in the process. Despite his age, the Mumamba brothers have opted to give Kilpter the captains armband for the tournament, citing his maturing experience in the AOCAF competition as the main influence in this result.

Vilita and Turori will have an extra reason to secure qualification from their first group stage, which will be held in the Myrtannian province of Scandon Island, due to the opposition they will be facing. While the history between Vilita & Turori and their main opposition in the group, Nedalia, as well as Neu Amerika is more than amicable, the makings of a brand new rivalry come from the fourth and final team drawn into the proceedings. If the Jungle Eels are to advance to the next stage of the competition, they will have to overcome the recently incorporated nation of Misrantis to do so. And to add yet another story line to the already inter-twined equation, It is widely expected that Rahman Omer Hilali, captain of the Vilita & Turori AOCAF winning side will be named head coach of the Misrantian U-21 squad within the coming days. Hilali, a Misrantian citizen, benefitted from a ruling that, as there was no formal senior Misrantis Football/Soccer team, the experienced footballer would be able to compete on the Vilita & Turori squad as a result of the automatic visas received as a result of the acquisition of Misrantis by Vilita & Turori.

But now, Misrantis will be fielding a team for the first time in their history, and it will be Vilita & Turori, the nation that perhaps allowed them the chance to do so that will square off with them on the final day of group play.

The format of the Group stage is not favorable to Vilita & Turori however. With all matches being played on neutral ground at Mari City Park in Mari City, each of the four teams will play each other just once resulting in a total of three qualification matches. While head coach Lorenzo Mumamba is confident that Vilita & Turori can qualify from Group A, he has admitted that one shock result, especially in the Misrantis derby match which will be uncharted territory for Vilita & Turori, could put the Jungle Eels in a less than desirable position come the end of matchday 3.

The junior national team was warming up on the bright, sunny pitch in Ionia, shouts and cries echoed around the forested perimeter of the large grass pitch as the team performed shuttle runs around purple cones laid out in rows on the grass. Jaime Oberlander, Head Coach of the Starblaydi Under-21 team, stood with his arms crossed steadfastly in front of him tapping a ball back and forth with his right foot as he watched the proceedings.

"I take it you haven't called me here to tell me what line-up for these under twenty-ones I should be using," Jaime Oberlander didn't change his expression for a moment as he squinted in the bright sun, "because I'd get very irritated if you tried to do that again."

"We certainly haven't, Jaime," said the suited, sunglassed man standing just to the side and behind him. The suit didn't quite fit his obviously overweight frame, jacket unbuttoned so as not to increase the look of his paunch. "What I've come to tell you is that you're in the hot seat for the national team spot. You're the number-one contender."

"I'm the only contender," Jaime said quietly, before yelling, "Kaz, Kaz! Kaza! Pick those knees up or get off my pitch!"

"We have other candidates in mind."

"Bull-explicitive removed-."

"You just see to your under twenty-ones here, Jaime," the man went to turn away, "because if you screw this up that job title isn't going anywhere near your two-time Cup-winning hide."

"If Khim, Geraint and I could have picked our own substitutions," Jaime said, "we'd have a third one in the bank."

"You reckon." The man said under his breath as he walked away from the training pitch.

"Alright, pick it up, one more run each!"

Lamoni in a U-21 tourney?????

It's true. For the first time, there is a Lamonian team at an international U-21 tournament. These high school, and college bound kids will be facing their counterparts from around AO, and learning more about other cultures as well. This will also be a chance to come back from the humiliating defeat of our AOCAF squad at the hands of Vilita and Turori.

The Lamonian U-21 Eagles have been placed in group D, with such teams as Az-Cz, Bazalonia, and the hosts; Myrtannia. Group D will be playing at Halosen National Stadium, in the Myrtannian capital itself. The political outlook on all of these teams is good; all but Az-Cz being SDL members, and relations between the Free Republic and Az-Cz are generally good as well.

The format for this competition is a little odd, each team in the group will only face each other once, with only three matchdays. Lamoni has a very good chance of being the head of the group, but so do the other three teams. We will have to watch our steps, and play as well as we know how.

******BREAKING NEWS******

In a new announcement, the coach for the Lamonian U-21 Eagles has just been announced. Everyone in Lamoni should be pleased by the decision to place Graham Hill as the coach of the new Lamonian U-21 squad.

Posted by: Vilita Sep 27 2006, 09:26 AM
And now we know why....

The Lamoni Hawks lost so brutally in the AOCAF final against Vilita and Turori. It seems that no one has clued in the Lamoni Hawks as to what it actually means to be playing a certain formation! Somehow, Lamoni was able to reach the AOCAF final, but with their plans outlined for the Under-21 Regional Championships, pundits around Atlantian Oceania. Duran Hopps of the Casari Non-Chalant reports that Lamoni is fielding a team suited for a zero-modifier style of play, yet is confusing the players by making them think they are playing a +5 style, which will only serve to neutralize any tactical plans they had going into their matches. Likewise, here in Vilita, reports of the tactical ineptity of the Hawks Under-21 manager have reached the newswires.

"Do they not grasp the concept of All-Out Attack?"
One bypasser exclaimed when interviewed.

"All Out Attack means exactly that. If you are running a +5, that means all you are doing is Attacking. It's the very extreme. What part of extreme don't people understand? Maybe... just maybe a +3 at the very most. But +5 just makes you look like you don't have a clue what you are doing, which is probably the case"

Clearly, the Vilitan and Turorian public has little sympathy for the nation they recently upended to take the AOCAF title.

Yihsrael Enters U-21 Tourney

Salahadin City, Myrtannia - For the first time in its breif history, the Federation of Yihsrael will be entering an international sporting competition. Even as the nation prepares for the rededication of the Great Temple, 22 young Yihsraelis are headed to neighboring Myrtannia. The prupose of the visit is the AO Under-21 Football Cup, the first of its kind in AO.

Being so new to competition, Yihsrael really doesn't look too favorable to get past the group stage, especially considering the competition in its group. Despite everyone starting off on an 'even foot', Yihsrael is overmatched in Group C. The Lowland Clans are a perrenial footballing nation, and their still nameless U-21ers should teach Yihsrael a thing or two. Fellow Jews Milchama have more experience, so another loss there. Finally, there's the powerful Starblaydis. Even though their U-21 side hasn't seen action for a long time, you can bet they'll be dangerous on the pitch.

Well, everyone has a beginning, right? Even if that beginning is painful.

Myrtannia Set To Host the Region, Nymphs Ready For Bazacubs

HALOSEN - Armed with youngsters who played as reserves for the AOCAF XVI Dryads and new kits provided by MRH Athletic, the Myrtannia Nymphs will make their debut tonight in the opening action of the First AO U21 Cup. Where foreign interest in the tournament has been in many cases mild, the United Isles are very excited to be hosting a football tournament. Let alone inaugurate one. After hosting two AORBCs, Myrtannia is ready to host some of the foremost footballing nations in all of AO.

Of course, this being the first Under 21 Cup in AO history, it's not certain exactly how anyone will do. Most of these teams have never played at an international/interregional level. The exceptions in this case are Vilita & Turori and Bettia, and possibly Starblaydia. All should make runs at the Cup, but none are in Myrtannia's group this time around.

This group of teenage girls, dubbed the Nymphs, will attempt to continue the momentum Myrtannian football has been building up over the past few years. As far as we know, they will be the only all-female side in the AO U21 Football Cup, but that's nothing new for Myrtannia. In every AOCAF, Myrtannia has fielded a majority female side, and has enjoyed success to a point. The U21 girls want more, though.

"We want to do something really special for the fans now that we're playing to a home crowd," said the team's coach at a press conference, "It's important that we get off to a good start against Bazalonia, and continue that through the rest of the tournament."

Playing in front of not just the home crowd but in the nation's capital at the Halosen National Stadium, the Nymphs will no doubt have the full weight of the Myrtannian fans on their side. If anything outside the all-out attacking offense can give Myrtannia success, it will be the vast sea of orange and blue in the stands. Every group stage match for the Nymphs is already sold out, according to MAFC officials.

Despite the odd group stage setup (only three matchdays, one match against each other side), Myrtannia certainly hopes this competition will be a positive experience for each of the entrants. Now, for the official Halosen News-Times outlook for the Group Stage:

Group A - "AOCAF Champs Take the Group, Then What?"
1. Vilita & Turori
2. Misrantis
3. Nedalia
4. Neu Amerika

We have no doubt that the Vilita & Turori side can run away with this group, especially considering who their side will have on the pitch. The rest of the group will play catchup the whole time as the Jungle Eels or whatever they call themselves go unbeaten. Nedalia might seem a lock for second in the group, but something tells us they might get a souvenier wooden spoon early. Neu Amerika made the knockouts of AOCAF XVI by luck, and their U-21 side will fare worse. Misrantis, then, will beat the Pioneers, then shock the Nedalians on their way to a Quarterfinals berth.

Group B - "Group of Death No. 1 in B Flat"
1. Pacitalia
2. Bettia
3. Hypocria
4. Demot

In Group B, any one of the four teams could certainly take first place, as all have the neccessary talent to do so. Pacitalia is our pick to pull it off, since they've done well in past NS U21 competitions, and also in AOCAF. They'll be followed closely by Bettia, who could overtake them if they slip up at any point. Hypocria will be another close contender, and could pull off wins enough to sneak past both Pacitalia and Bettia. Demot made the KOs in their first AOCAF, and may well have the talent to contend for a slot in them here.

Group C - "Purple Peril Minors Dominate"
1. Starblaydia
2. Milchama
3. The Lowland Clans
4. Yihsrael

Starblaydia, as we all know, is the top team in regular AOCAF play, and we think they will contend for that position in the U21 field as well. They'll cut through this group as easily as V&T will through Group A, and the Clans and Milchama will battle for the scraps. Milchama might have the advantage this time around, but both they and TLC will beat newbie Yihsrael, who will be home in time for tea.

Group D - "Group of Death No. 2 in C Major"
1. Myrtannia
2. Bazalonia
3. Lamoni
4. Az-Cz

Another group of death in this competition, but one we feel the Nymphs will end up on top of due to homefield advantage. Bazalonia will edge out Lamoni by a goal differential tie breaker, which may cause the Eagles to cry foul. Az-Cz, who misunderstood the term 'Under-21', will just... well, it won't be pretty. But Bazalonia, Myrtannia, and Lamoni all have the talent to win this group. It should be fun to watch.

Demot Daily ~ Young Guns?

With the start of the inagural AO Under 21 tournament, the faces of the Demot squad are quite unknown. Many of these talented youngsters are on club rosters, but rarely get the time to show off their skills with soo many crafty and respected veterans on their squads. However under the guidance of the newly appointed Youth Development Manager, this squad will be able to show why many of them have bright futures ahead of them, and may perhaps earn their way onto the main national team with good performances here.

But the challange is not easy, as the team has been drawn into a rather difficult group. Pactalia, whom the national team faced off with in the AOCAF, are join along with Bettia, who will be enraged on their matchday with Demot due to Demot's national and kit colors being black and red, along with another established nation of Hypocria. The group is being dubbed "The Group of Death" for this tournament, and righfully so. Each of these squads deserve to advance past the groupstage, and each match will be a hard fought affair. In the end, this reporter sees Bettia and Demot pulling through, each with a 2-1 record in group play. Reporting from Myrtannia, this is Jasmine Olyvander signing off.

"What did the Myrattanians say?"

"That we would lose to Starblaydia."

"Pfft, we beat them last U21 WC and we'll do it again too."

"I bet."

Predictions! Yeh?

Well we have good news and bad news. The good news is that the U21s are playing again and for the first time since WC 24 they are being coached by a Milchamian. This is the first time that a Milchamian has coached a major squad since WC 25. Anyway, getting away from history, its in AO where our sporting tradition sucks. We haven't broke at a tournament in AO in a long time and we don't want to ruin the streak of the U21s. Also this is an unorthodox team that relies heavily on speed but seems to have a lack of passing talent. While Lans has defended this strategy some have not as he clearly to take the physical specimen over the more established people who understood the finer points of the game. Will it work? Time will only tell. Wow! I just realized we're also against TLC bloody bastards are going to die. 5-0 victory here we come.

Onto the infamous Milchamian predictions:
Starblaydia- The men in Mauve are always dangerous but we think our next generation is better than them. Heck our current generation are better than their next generation if U21s are anything to go by. With this said it will still be a hard match but we still expect a victory or at least a draw from this match.

Milchama- That's us. With a bunch of new players with a different strategy than any past coach has employed we have no idea how well we will do. Our U21s are our most successful consistent squad and we certainly don't want that ruined to watch out ya'll.

The Lowland Clans- Our rivals. They suck at U21s. (they suck at regular older football as well) The only question I'm asking about this game, is how much? As in, how much are we going to win by? because that's the only real question in a blowout throwaway match like this.

Yihsrael- Our fellow Jews. We already exchanged an embassy with them and have representatives at the reopening for the third temple. All is looking well. Which is why despite the absolute thrashing we're going to give to them it will be nice to play against fellow Jews and doing well only makes it better.

"Take that, you little bitch."

Kaza Matranga picked herself up off the muddy turf and rubbed her left calf muscle where Aleksandr Rekeseski had clattered her. Being from a long line of famous footballers was no help to her here. Whether it was Aiden, Nick, Itechton or Jade who had been the deciding factor in why Aleks had such an instant dislike for her, Jade could only pull up her socks, quite literally, and carry on. Aleks was the worst of them, but more than a few glared at her as she jogged back to her position on the pitch. This short training session of a twenty-minute eleven-a-side match was certainly proving painful for her.

"Don't need to worry about them," a friendly voice said behind her, Stracinho opening his mouth again, "offense is where it's at, without us they're nothing, bunch of big slow dumb idiots."

"Yeah," said Kaza, with no real commitment behind her statement, "I got four goals in the AOCAF last year."

"I'll get more, way more," Stracinho said, "only I'll be doing it in the World Cup. I'll fire us all the way to the Final, if you make it on the team too."

"I hope so."

"STRAY!" The call from the Boss on the touchlines was unmistakable. "Shut your mouth, play the game."

"When did he ever score a goal?" Stracinho said under his breath as he jogged away, calling for Betanii Marrones to pass him the ball. She didn't, and swiftly received a verbal dressing down from the seventeen year-old striker. Again Oberlander yelled at him. Suddenly Kaza felt a sharp pain on her left foot and cried out, jumping back.

"Looks like those trademark Matranga fast-feet aren't quite so fast at all." Aleks sneered at her.

"Say what?!?! The tournaments not for under-21 kilograms but for under 21 years of age?!? Who in their right mind would want a tournament like that?!?!" complained the mother of Flo-Ma.

"Yeah. It's so unnecessary. Kids that age who would be good enough to make the team are already playing in the -League. And a lot of them earned caps for the national side in the Cup of Harmony or even the World Cup Qualifying proper." responded Youn Ji-Hyun's father.

"Not to mention high school, university and youth club teams. Older kids have plenty of chances to play. But little kids, nothing." added in Mo-El's mother.

Mo-El's other mother continued on, "Yeah it'd be like having a separate tournament for women or something."

"Good. So we all agree it's a bad idea for a tournament. So when we get back to Az-cz we'll ask Nos-Tf to petition asking for a change to the Under-21 kilogram idea, which is actually a good one. But what are we going to do now?" queried Lo-Rdr's grandmother.

"Well," began Juan Valdez's father "we're here, the kids are here, they've got those cute soccer jammies. And they all seem to enjoy soccer, even if they don't really seem to grasp the point of the game yet. I see no reason to give up and go home."

"Neither do I." seconded Swt-Ht's mother. "We ought to be able to trust Bazalonia and Lamoni and Myrtannia as hosts to treat our children well."

Sa-Ra's mother chimed in with the last word on the subject, "Yeah. It's not like this is the AOCAF and has to be taken that seriously."

"Alright, you lazy capitalists! Move it!" came the shout from Marcellus Demchok, manager of the SUNA Pioneers, and former Crimson Army drill sergeant.

The young men of the Neu Amerikan U21 team began to push harder and harder as they scrimmaged. It was to be expected that this new manager would make them drill as if this was the Army. He'd been in the Army, and much was expected of this team as well. No less than Chief Socialist Kaminska had informed Demchok that he wanted the Pioneers to reach the Quarterfinals of this U21 tournament. Making the round of 16 in their first AOCAF was one thing, but it was only the beginning for SUNA soccer/football.

"Kernodle! Stay with your man, for Mosser's sake!" Demchok screamed and blew his whistle as the defender was outmaneuverd by a reserve forward.

"Sorry, Comrade Manager," Kernodle responded, only to get a slap from Demchok.

"If we're going to live up to our Chief Socialist's expectations, we need to play defense! We beat Misrantis and Nedalia and we're through! Now get your head in the game so we'll be ready for these bloodsucking capitalist pigs! Move it!" Demchok hollered even though the young man was right in front of him.

"Right away, Comrade Manager Demchok," Kernodle saluted, and returned to the pitch.

It was only a scrimmage, but it had become full-contact as the reserves found themselves generally pushed around by the starting formation. Time after time, Autovino and Gorychka scored goals on the reserve keeper, and Kernodle finally starting playing well enough to suit Demchok. Then, one of the reserve forwards somehow got back in the starters' back third, and got past Kernodle before scoring on Baumiester.

"KERNODLE! What did I just say?! That's it, drop and give me 30! You too Baumiester!" Demchok barked, then went up to the young woman who had just scored, "What's your name, Comrade?"

"Scarlett Gorychka, Comrade Manager," the raven-maned teenager responded eagerly.

"Any relation to H. Gorychka in the starting 11?" the manager asked emotionlessly.

"His sister, Comrade Manager. 13 years of age," she added, "No club affiliation yet, Comrade."

"Good.. you play like that and I'll have you replace Autovino or somebody," Demchok added, then turned back to Kernodle and Baumiester to ensure they were doing their pushups.

Here is PSN's prediction for the Group Stage of AOCAF-U21!

Group A
1. Nedalia
2. Vilita & Turori
3. Neu Amerika
4. Misrantis

The Lions are traditionally a form team in international under-21 competition so we expect it should be no different. V&T have combined their under-21 squads like they did their AOCAF effort (which paid off handsomely with a championship in Lamoni), but Vilita's drop from the top echelon of the international ranks into a mid-range position will most likely prevent them, provided Nedalia doesn't slip up flukishly, from topping the group. SUNA and Misrantis will finish in the bottom two spots as a result.

Group B
1. Pacitalia
2. Bettia
3. Hypocria
4. Demot

Three of four teams have previous U21 World Cup experience, and lots of it, while the fourth squad, Demot, is making its first appearance in an under-21 tournament, whether regional or international. The U21 Blue Foxes are perenially strong, led up front by a strong forward core in veteran striker Massimo da Scupeta, superstar youngster Afino Boranogunta, captain Bertrando Massimatto and talented wingmen Marco Fanazori and Gianluca Marti. Meanwhile, Bettia's traditionally strong offence will possibly pose a challenge for the junior Hyppos and definitely for the Demot squad. Expect it to be close with the U21 Blue Foxes taking the Group of Death by a hair.

Group C
1. Starblaydia
2. Milchama
3. The Lowland Clans
4. Yihsrael

The top two teams in this group at the end of the primary stage are obviously going to be the two that have U21 experience, and those two teams are Starblaydia and Milchama. Give TLC credit as they attempt to upset the Warriors into giving up that second qualifying spot but in the end the red-and-whites advance alongside the Starblaydis.

Group D
1. Bazalonia
2. Myrtannia
3. Az-Cz
4. Lamoni

Group D is characterised by the fact that only one team has previous U21-level experience. In fact, it could be an easy ride to the finish for the Bazacubs who face an inexperienced Hawks side, a newcomer Az-Cz side composed of kids under the age of five (which seems an insult to the sport and competition itself), and a host Nymphs side which has to deal with added pressure to win something and have it mean something as well -- after Myrtannia bowed out a bit early in the knockouts of AOCAF16.

Note that these are approximate standings and based on the slight modification of even one factor of our own calculation of these ranks, the entire final standings could change dramatically. Therefore, they are simply predictions and not scientifically-verifiable. This seems especially true in Group B.

Dual-Nationalized Kristofer Kilpter carried over his sensational AOCAF winning form directly into the first ever match in the history of the Atlantian Oceania Under-21 tournament, where Kilpter led out the reigning AOCAF champion Vilita & Turori Eel-Cat Things as they squared off against the always formidible Nedalia. The Lions, always a force to be reckoned with on the youth level, were not up to their usual calibre as Kilpters early brace was enough to secure all three points for the Vilita Cove entry.

Kilpters first came just 9 minutes into the match after a poor switch by the Nedalian defender was easily cut out by the Vilita & Turori Regional Star who made no mistake in rounding the keeper and cooly placing the ball into the back of the net. And Kilpters second was no less magical after being lead in from the right, Kilpter found a gap between two defenders before rifling a 20 yard shot that was never going to be stopped at this level of competition, perhaps pressing Kilpters name amongst the favorites to step out onto the field when Vilita return to the World Cup finals during World Cup xXxI.

Elswhere in the group, Neu America were victorious in their opener against Vilitan Entity Misrantis, a 4-2 result that puts the 'Neu atop the group table due to superior goals scored. Vilita and Turori will square off with Neu Amerika on matchday 2 in a match that should secure qualification to the next round for the winner.

Nymphs Pick Up Where Dryads Left Off, Get Big Win

HALOSEN - It was the main event of an action-filled first day of the inaugural AO Under-21 Football Cup, the stadium filled to standing room only. Most of those spectators wore the orange and blue of the host nation, cheering at the top of their lungs to encourage the first Myrtannian U-21 side. To begin their AO U21 FC campaign, Myrtannia would face Bazalonia, a rival in AOCAF, and potentially a rival for the U-21s as well.

After a fully orchestrated rendition of 'Stand Strong, United Isles', accompanied by a professional recording artist who was drown out by the fans, the Nymphs seemed to just be taking it all in. To play at home in such a big match, and to have the hopes of the entire nation riding on you, is not an easy thing to do for youngsters with no real experience on this stage. Despite the high expectations, the Nymphs seemed relaxed and content to drink in the energy from the crowd, which gave them another standing ovation.

On a side note, Myrtannian fans also gave the Pacitalian side a standing ovation before their match with Demot. It just goes to show that the Myrtannia/Pacitalia rivalry is a friendly one.

Back to the Nymphs. Certain media outlets predicted that the Bazacubs would win this group, as they were the only side with international U21 experience. Not wiling to let that experience get in their way, Myrtannia came out of the gates early, and seemed to play just like their older countrywomen and men of the Dryads side. The familiar sight of a five-forward attack preceeded the setup for Myrtannia's first goal in U21 competition.

Zora Leckington took possesion of the ball, and passed it off to Khulmey, who charged into the box. Rather than shoot it herself, she passed it off to her left, where Nidia War waited eagerly. Seconds later, War struck the ball into the net, and the Nymphs went up 1-nil. The crowd, as expected, went wild. War was mobbed by teammates, but the celebration didn't last too long.

Soon enough, the Nymphs were back in position, and played a conservative, defensive match for the rest of the first half. Holding the vaunted Bazacubs scoreless, Myrtannia went into the half up by a goal.

"A good start all things considered," said coach Ljungquist, "We got a goal, and we stood our ground defensively. You can't ask for much more in your first match."

When they came back out after the break, Myrtannia resumed the attack, regaining posession from the Bazacubs, and pushed down the pitch again. This time, Leckington recieved it from War, and then passed it off to Hettie Miyagishima. Hettie, a junior at Heihachi High in Mari City, Scandon Island, found herself with an opportunity too good to pass up. Only the goalkeeper stood in her path to the goal, and she couldn't have faked him out any better. A split-second error in judgement allowed Miyagishima to put the ball in the net's lower left corner. Myrtannia now led 2-nil, and the sea of Orange and Blue was rocking, perhaps the loudest Halosen National Stadium's been since Halosen United won its only MAFC Cup.

Miyagishima's goal was also greeted by cheers and shouts of 'Banzai!' from the Myrtannian fans - a reference to how HHS fans cheer when their team scores a goal. Once the celebration died down, Myrtannia went back to conservative defense, and continued to prevent the Bazacubs from breaking through to scoring range. When the dust settled, Myrtannia secured a 2-0 win to start off what fans hope will be a successful AO U21 FC run.

"It's a great way to open this tournament," stated captain Nidia War, "The fans were great too - really got us totally psyched for this match. One down, two to go."

The win puts Myrtannia into second place, just behind regional neighbors and good friends Lamoni. Lamoni's Eagles just edged out the kids (literally) from Az-Cz to the tune of 4-3. Myrtannia hasn't played any kind of football match against a Lamonian side since the Group Stage of AOCAF XIII. Back then, the Hawks throttled the Dryads, but times have changed, as has the competition. Myrtannia will be praciticing hard and long for the most important U21 match yet, and will do its best to be ready for the Eagles.

"A win against them sends us to the Quarterfinals, so we're determined to snag it. We'll practice and prepare for them very hard, I can promise you. They've got the talent to knock us off the high horse, and we can't let that happen. It should be a good match, based on the friendship between ourselves and Lamoni," coach Ljungquist explained.

On another note, the MAFC clubs Lahar and Mari City have begun investigating the possibility of acquiring Starblaydi footballers to shore up their ranks. Lahar has reportedly expressed interest in defender Tiberius Costello, while the Mari City Maulers have taken interest in obtaining the services of midfielder Lori Alvarez and forward Tommas Coalville.

The Final Score from Halosen National Stadium:
Myrtannia 2 - 0 Bazalonia
(War 19', Miyagishima 60') (None)

The AIR 4 Upset of the Round: PAC 1-2 DEM. For all the belief we held that the junior Blue Foxes would win the whole group, Demot sure came out of nowhere. The first-time U21 side upset the talented Blue Foxes, who should recover from the loss. Congrats to Demot.

"Do you know what happened there?" asked the coach after the match

"I let through 2 goals?" offered Joshua Kanga

"Yes, but more than that, WE WERE OUTSCORED BY 5 YEAR OLDS! Now can someone explain how a bunch of 5 year olds managed to score 3 goals and we failed to score any? And then as you would assume got a better Goal Differencial?"

"But, coach they lost as well." Henry Fjord quipped

"They are 5 year olds... of course they are going to f'ing lose. NOW CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW THEY MANAGED TO SCORE 3 GOALS?!" the coach was fuming.

"They worked together as a team? they are super-toddlers? We didn't see the match how the heck would we know." challenged Thomas Yunn

"They are normal 5 year olds, the Az-Cz League got slightly confused thinking the Under 21 meant under 21 kilos. They are gnomes, but they are normal 5 year olds doing 5 year old things. Now does another 'bright spark' have another guess?"

"Well, how about you then captain Ricky, got anything for us that your brother missed?"

"Ummm.... Tactics?"

"Okay.. Tell us what you mean by Tactics.. oh great Captain of the Bazacubs."

"Ummm..,. They are babies right? So they think totally different to us 17,18,19,20 year olds correct? So their tactics would be totally different. So much different that it's like in chess you have no idea how to counteract a move you know nothing about."

"Correct, you are being out-played by a bunch of 5-year olds and do you know who we play next? Those same 5-year olds. We need to start thinking like toddlers if we are going to dominate this team like we should. We are the only team in this group to have international experience. Granted that was in the U21 WC which was quite a while ago but we need to stamp or dominance on this tournament."

"So what are we going to do?"

"I have organised you to work in day cares for a week. That will be your training, you are there not to play with kids or even to look after them. You will do these things but you are there to learn how the 5-year old brain works. And then when we face the Az-Cz team and we will not only win. We will win and we will win with style."

"Ah.. Coach?" said Everrett Kangas he piped up

"Yes, Everrett?"

"Do you have any comment about this match?" asked Everrett

"Yeah score a goal why don't you. Now, you start work in an hour. Chop Chop" exclaimed the coach as he walked out of the dressing room leaving the Bazacubs to scramble.

"I wonder if they believed all that crock I gave? Well, at least now I can win that bet with James Gaines."

Demot Daily ~ Flying Start

The squad has started as about as well as they could, edging out Pactalia in a gritty game that could of gone either way. Their were many positives from the game, with Orien looking like he has the inside track to take over Whitehurse's vacant goalie spot on the national team, saving several critical shots during the waning moments of the match. However there is cause for concern as the midfield was unable to control and dictate the pace of the game when they needed to. This will need to be rectified if the team is going to make a deep run into the tournament. Yet the positives outwiegh the negatives, with the attacking trio proving more than competent in the opener, with Maryweather and Alexander bothing netting goals courtesy of a Corin assist.

Up next for Demot is Hypocria, who lost to Bettia three to one in their first match. If the team can hand Hypocria a second loss, it would all but insure the team of advancing, and allow them to play for first place in the ground on the last matchday against Bettia. The team will obviously be pulling for the win as to not having to defeat the talented Bettians on the final matchday, and maybe rest a few key players before the KOs. Also of note, the DFA has decided a change in the Demot's nickname from Fortress to Dynamo.

"Weren't those Lamonians nice. They scored their four goals in the first minute then spent the rest of the time coaching our children." Kengo Inokuchi's mother began.

"And helping them score those goals," continued Selo-Ex's father, "was very nice. as well."

"Yeah Su-Wee looked so happy when she kicked the ball into the goal." beamed her mother.

"And so did both Cro-Mg and Go-Mar," added one of Mo-El's mothers.

Her partner continued, "Though it's a shame about little Tie-Mar's accident."

Her father responded, "Yeah she was a bit upset. We haven't completely finished the potty training yet. You know how it is."

Everyone echoed with some sort of comment along the lines of "do we ever."

"Still," he continued "the kids had fun. It was a great day. We ought to do something nice for the Lamonians."

"Well I'm well prepared" said Baranna Obama's mother. "I've been knitting these wool caps and I've got enough for all the players and coaches on the other three teams. I hope they're not to uncool for the kids on the other teams."

"Well such nice boys like the Lamonians ought to appreciate them." chimed in Bk-Oh's father.

"So for next game remember that we're getting the oranges and granola bars." reminded Ti-Ger's father. "Who's getting the juice?"

"That's us" The Mo-El mothers replied.

"Alright great. Sounds like everything's settled then. See you guys at the next game." Ti-Ger's father finished.

Brother/Sister Tandem Sinks Misrantis

In some welcome news from the United Isles of Myrtannia, our courageous young comrades of the Sociliast Union Pioneers team won their first match. Initiating the competition against Vilitan territory Misrantis, the coaching style of Marcellus Demchok proved to be too much for the capitalist opposition. Credit must be given to Misrantis attackers Rehmay de Torrey and Umfali Maraset, who scored their team's goals at 40' and 45' respectively.

For the Pioneers, goals came early in the first half, as Hobert Gorychka scored just 3 minutes in to give the Socialist Union a lead. He followed this with a second goal 20 minutes later, which extended the SUNA lead to 2 goals. Misrantis' quick goals late in the half tied the match, but that would be as close as they would get. Comrade Demchok removed a sluggish looking Autovino and replaced him with 13-year old forward Scarlett Gorychka, sister to Hobert. The younger Gorychka added her own brace of goals, beginning with a header off a corner kick at 61'. She followed that score up with a long, 'miracle' goal from 40 out. That goal cemented a triumph for the Pioneers, who gained first place in Group A for now.

Also in Group A, the combined Vilita and Turori side debuted with a shutout of rivals Nedalia, winning 2-0. Kristofer Kilpter scored both of the Eel Cat Things' goals, and we are assured that Comrade Demchok will be pushing the Pioneers in practice to ensure that they defend the dual nationality star. The team that wins this upcoming match will secure passage to the Quarterfinals, and the Socialist Union plans to be that team.

Socialist Union 4, Misrantis 2
(H.Gorychka 3' and 23', S.Gorychka 61' and 80') (de Torrey 40', Maraset 45')

Lans dissapoints

Like most of his debate career, Alex Lans again dissapointed in his first game in charge of the Milchama Warriors. In an easy to win game against the Start of The Lowland Clans, Lans' defense failed him losing the Warriors 4-1 lead and leaving them in second place after a dissapointing 4-4 draw. Coach Lans! said, "It was a dissapointing way to start but it doesn't matter how we start it matters how we finish and I have a good feeling about this team. We showed our strength and where our struggles out. Oh yeh and our backup keeper will be starting the next game." Now the thrice nightly rendition of how they scored as announced by Milchama TV 2 "If it's not TV 2 then it's probably good TV."

2nd minute: Lans' looking nervous as he paces the touchline. It is his first game in charge so nobody should be suprised about this, he also had a tendency to pace even as the assistant coach. Anyway, his players are doing quite well, as Mitchell starts the counter attack. Lans is a heavy believer in the counter attack 3-3-4 theory which is how he shaped his team, as Marchakov gets the ball. He goes quickly down the wing as he goes to a running Catch Esrimdo. The Book title cuts inside, and finds a running Avi Belmowitz. Belmowitz takes on one Star defender, passes him and shoots! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! 1-0 Milchama! Lans' campaign as manager is off to a perfect as a nice counter attack gave Belmowitz the time to make his move and score.

10th minute: Kenny Rintell on the ball. Wow! Did he learn that from his father? Anyway, he's past two defenders, 3 make that, as he beats another Clansman. Flar making a run as Rintell passes but the ball is kicked away but right into the path of Kevin Flossmore. Flossmore sizes up the shot moves a little inside and takes a cracker! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! 2-0 Milchama! Kevin Flossmore with a wonderful shot to the far left hand corner to give Milchama the easy 2-0 lead. This is looking really good for the Warriors right now. There is an obvious feeling of belief.

34th minute: Kelvin Wilkirk now on the ball. He quickly goes up and passes to Joey Harris who again goes down the wing untouched. Harris over to Catch Esrimdo. The book title, goes inside one defender, and takes a wild shot. It's going over WAIT IT'S IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!! nobody would of thunk it but Esrimdo with a lucky shot that just sunk inside of the crossbar and into the net. The keeper is stunned and so are the Stars. It's 3-0 Milchama in the first half and its looking good for them.

45th minute: It's half time and the Warriors have gone nuts. 3 goals in the first half what a game for them so far.

48th minute: 3-1.

60th minute: Harris past two defenders as Belmowitz streaks in, the pass to Belmowitz, as he passes his marker and SCORES! 4-1 Milchama! Surely the game is over and the answer to the question of how much is 3. Although isn't the answer always 42? This is bad luck now isn't it?

62nd minute: 4-2. I was right only two minutes later and TLC pulls back one.

89th minute: 4-3. Well our goal difference is down but Halutz Dalton looks mad after that last mistake so its not going to matter because we're still going to get the 3.

90th minute: 4-4. Another mistake by Dalton and it's a tie. I can't belive we didn't get the 3.

Final Score:
Milchama 4 (Belmowitz 2, 60, Flossmore 10, Esrimdo 34)
TLC 4 (Idiot 48, Halutz Dal 62, 89, 90)

Milchama anti man of the match:
For 3 mistakes Halutz Dal has been relegated to the bench. Bloody idiot.

Well, this was interesting

After the Lamonian U-21 Eagles scored their four goals of the match within the first minute, they then turned around and helped to teach the Az-Cz squad on how to play football. It was simply adorable when Graham Lawley in particular taught the Az-Czid children how to score. Az-Cz might not have such a good record at the end of the group stages, but they will certainly learn quite a lot.

In the meantime, the Eagles face hosts Myrtannia next. This should be Lamoni's first 'serious' U-21 match, and we think that it will be a close one. Both nations are good friends with each other, and this should only be enhanced by the friendly meeting of U-21 squads before the match. We last faced Myrtannia in the group stages of AOCAF XIII, where the AOCAF Hawks pretty much dominated the match. Of course, the times and teams here are different, so we can't be complacent on the pitch. Myrtannian media has stated that they will be preparing themselves for us, and so we shall be preparing ourselves for the match against them.

As another thing, this upcoming match against Myrtannia will help to disprove the notoriously arrogant proclomation in the Vilitan press that a 3-5-2 formation is not good for a +5 modifier. It has worked for the Hawks, and we feel that it will work for the U-21 Eagles as well.

Lamoni - 4 Folsom (20, 45 sec), Lawley (40, 55 sec)
Az-Cz - 3 (20, 21, 22)

Poor-playing 'Pups stunned by upstart Demot
Zentrescu panned for playing substitute side in opening match; next two games now must-wins

HALOSEN, MYRTANNIA (PSN)
-- In probably the stupidest move of his Under-21 managing career, Lindifeu Zentrescu opted to give most of the starting eleven for the U21 Blue Foxes an extra day's rest, playing six substitutes for the squad's opening group-stage match against Demot. And what a poor move it was, as the Fox pups were stunned in an upset 2-1 loss to their first opponents of the AOCAF U21 Cup.

No doubt Zentrescu will reintroduce the intact starting XI for the match against Bettia but Blue Fox fans are certainly upset at the poor and arrogant way in which the Demot opponents were treated. Despite beating them in the AOCAF16 round-robin this was obviously a different squad and a different environment, and the Blue Foxes would have done much better to at least use the match as a meaningful warmup for the starting squad, regardless of the result. Now they must win their next two matches, and nothing less than that or else they are eliminated from the tournament. Yes, we said it. Eliminated. And, by most standards, prematurely.

After seemingly even play to set the match tone, Demot's May Maryweather opened the scoring in the twenty-eighth minute in a stunning strike from just outside the box, and those assembled watched the shot curl into the top corner of the net past backup keeper Luis Capodor Reina, who kicked the upright in disgust. He was cautioned for the mental slip-up and continued play with a little less fire in the belly, even cheering with the fans in relief as substitute striker Arcangelo Fonseca equalised in the 53rd off a corner from Marco Fanazori.

However, Demot's momentum helped them restore their lead a quarter of an hour later, as Maryweather's setup man Gregory Corin helped with the second effort, spurring Jason Alexander with a set lob that landed just inside the box in front of Alexander, who calmly flicked (but, from numerous camera angles, nearly missed the ball altogether) the ball into the net past an again furious Reina for the 2-1 lead.

Next up, Pacitalia must swallow its pride, start the goram XI this time, and brace for fan backlash if they fall to the Bettians. Because, despite the healthy and friendly rivalry between the two sides, some Blue Fox fans are still smarting from the extra-time loss in the third-place match of AOCAF XVI after going undefeated for nearly all of the competition, and will want some form of revenge, albeit against the junior Aroras. After Bettia the Pacitalians face fellow defeated Hypocria, dumped 3-1 on opening matchday by those same Aroras.

From Halosen
Pacitalia 1 : 2 Demot

PAC: Fonseca 53'
DMT: Maryweather 28', Alexander 68'

Nymphs Clip Eagles' Wings, Remain Unbeaten

HALOSEN - In a matchup between two nations on very friendly terms, who share the same general area of our great region, the atomsphere before the match was cordial. The Nymphs and Eagles shook hands, exchanged jokes and conversation before the match. There were unconfirmed reports that they even kicked the ball around together a bit. But when the national anthems were presented, and the opening whistle blown, Myrtannia was all business.

Another sellout crowd packed Halosen National Stadium, an amazing sight for a new tournament, let alone an Under-21 football tournament. Maybe for an AOCAF it would be, but it's certainly a welcome surprise. There were many fans in the stands in the red and blue of the Free Republic, who made the short hop from Lamoni to see the Eagles play. The vast majority of them, however, were in the Orange and Blue of Myrtannia, and as vocal as ever. Maybe more so. Certainly less rowdy than the Dryads Army that accompanies the full national team on its AOCAF ventures in any case.

Both teams prepared for the match, but it was a question of how well they prepared. Lamoni had an easy time with the kids of Az-Cz, scoring four times in the first minute before giving them a football lesson for 89 minutes. Myrtannia, coming off a huge 2-0 win against Bazalonia, entered the match with lofty expectations hanging over their heads.

The match was a stalemate for the first 45 minutes, as neither side could get a clear shot on goal. Both teams took shots, but none went in. For a match between two sides that pride themselves on attacking football, it was a highly defensive contest. In the stands, the tension was almost unbearable for the hometown fans, who were beginning to think their Nymphs might stumble early in the tournament.

"Lamoni's been playing very well so far, and we've definitely got our hands full out there. We'll come back out in the second half and push 'em again. Eventually, one of us has to get tired out there, and that's when real scoring opportunities will spring up," coach Ljungquist told reporters who blocked her way into the locker rooms.

If the first half was all defense, the second half was the polar opposite. At least for the Nymphs. Pressing the attack with all five forwards again, Myrtannia began to tire the Eagles' defenders, and seemed to be waiting for the right moment to strike. Once they had a shot, the Nymphs were determined to take it. In the 60th minute, they got the chance, as Zora Leckington got past a Lamoni defender, then spotted Khulmey off to her right. AIR 4's call on the play:

"And off to Leckington... wait, she's past the defender, Zora looking to cross... it's in the air, headed for Khulmey... Khulmey with the scissor kick.... GOOOOAAALL!! A marvelous goal by Khulmey, and Myrtannia breaks the deadlock!"

Rather than celebrate the goal too much, Khulmey simply ran back toward the Myrtannian half of the pitch, and shrugged nonchalantly. Her teammates were more excited, but they too returned to their spots for the kickoff. Lamoni seemed to have been shaken by the goal, but managed to control the ball for a little while. Eventually, though, the Nymphs broke through again, this time with the help of a key pass interception. Again, the call from AIR 4:

"Eagles push up the right side... Zosel intercepts the pass! Zosel scoots it up to Longknife... Longknife approaching the Lamonian penalty box, Eagles coming up to meet her... a beautiful pass over to Miyaghishima... only the keeper between her and the goal.. she strikes.... GOOOOOOAAAL!!! Hettie Miyagishima with the second goal of the match! Banzai!! Myrtannia leads 2-nil!"

Miyaghishima's goal set off another minor celebration, but the Nymphs once again soon returned to their half of the pitch. The rest of the match was controlled at a Myrtannian tempo, with the Nymphs pushing the Eagles back and taking a few more shots on goal. Lamoni's keeper kept most of them out, until a shot was deflected out of bounds by him. Myrtannia recieved a corner kick, and Sarita Longknife was chosen to kick it into play. Longknife, tutored by Daisey Martignago on the art of corners, put it into play expertly. All Hettie did was head it in for the second match in a row, and once again resulting in a goal.

With the score now 3-0, Myrtannia was comfortably in front and fell back to conservative defense which held the Eagles at bay. Once the final whistle was blown, a larger celebration touched off on the field, as the Nymphs mobbed Miyagishima. Fists pumping into the air, group hugs, and general rejoicing were seen as the Nymphs had all but punched their ticket into the Quarts. They did stop to shake hands with the Lamonians in a show of sportswomanship, but ultimately, it was their night. The fans in the crowd were louder than at the Bazalonia match, and stayed for a long while after the conclusion, celebrating with the team.

"It's amazing to win so decisively twice in a row now. First Bazalonia, now Lamoni. All that's left is Az-Cz and then we can start working on preparing for the knockouts," Miyagishima explained, "We're confident we can win against Az-Cz, but they're just so cute that we'll probably give them football lessons too."

Also in the stadium was Dryads captain Dania Figary, heroine to millions of young Myrtannians, and all-time international goal scoring leader for Myrtannia. She was on the last Myrtannian side to face a Lamonian one, way back in AOCAF XIII.

"Last time, they beat us 3-0 in Krytenia. This time, we beat them by the exact same score on our home turf - it just doesn't get any better than that," Figary told the News-Times, "I'm really proud of these girls and what they've done so far."

With that in mind, the next opponent for Myrtannia is Az-Cz, whose under-5s have recieved much instruction from the bigger kids in this tournament. With a win, Myrtannia would lock up first place in the group, and go on to face a second seed from another group in the Quarterfinals. Elsewhere in the group, Bazalonia recovered as expected and defeated Az-Cz 2-1; no news on whether they gave the kids some pointers or not. Also, Pacitalia returned to form with a 2-0 win over Bettia, and is still in the hunt for a knockout round berth. Best of luck to our Blue Fox friends.

The final score from Halosen National Stadium:

Myrtannia 3 - 0 Lamoni
(Khulmey 60', Miyagishima 79' & 84') (None)

The week at various Day Care centres around volunteering certainly changed the Bazacubs. Was it they where better players? No way. The match started much like any of the other matches in Halosen. The national anthem of Az-Cz of was played as the Az-Czid toddlers started to roam around the field. And then it was time for the Bazalonian national anthem. The two teams could not be more different 17,18,19 and 20 year olds who with discipline stand in acknowledgement to their national anthem and the Az-Czid toddlers who probably don't even know what a national anthem is.

However the match started, and you'd expect the Bazacubs to score the first goal take a lead and never look back. But this was no ordinary match. Infact it was not the Bazacubs to score the first goal. It was little Ti-Ger, A 3-year old, and 2 foot 10 inch or in metric 86cm Az-Cz gnome, helped along by Frederick Hampstead, a Bazalonian forward, managed to head but the ball into the goal.

Joseph Kanga, the goalie watched as you could tell with delight as the Az-Czid toddler headbutted the ball into the goal in the 31st minute of the match. The Bazalonian defenders helped the Az-Czid team celebrate by making funny noises and faces and clapping as they learned how to do at the Day Care centres. In the 33rd minute the Bazacubs thought they better win the match and shot 2 quick goals.

The rest of the match contained the Bazacubs playing peeka-boo, and generally playing with the toddlers for the entire remain of the match. The coach was really frustrated with the team, this was meant to be a serious soccer tournament and those Az-Cz toddlers where ruining it for everyone.

He wanted to make a complaint however the management of the team prevented him, "look it's an under-21 tournament there is no minimum age. You have nothing to base your complaint on. And if you succeed or fail, the parents of the Az-Cz team will most likely put you on a death list. No Complaining to the organisers? Got it?"

The coach was even more unhappy with his players he sent them to the Day Care Centre to know how they work, not how to teach them to play peeka-bo and entertain 3-5 year olds. He tried in the first 10 minutes trying to get the team to take the match seriously, by yelling at them, but no matter who he tried to replace the team always responded to the children in their darling little green and pink Jamies in the exact same way.

After the Match there was a brief press conference

"These toddlers from Az-Cz are the future of sporting in their nation and I am, we all are, proud of these guys. I think they have picked up a few of core rules of the game. They know to stay in the lines and I think it's just a matter of time before Mo-El, Tie-Mar, Su-Wee or little Ti-Ger. Just to name a few become soccer players of the highest caliber."

Posted by: Az-cz Sep 29 2006, 01:29 PM
"Wow those Bazacubs were absolutely wonderful" began Ti-Ger's father. "And helping him set up that header was amazing."

"Indeed, whod've thought a group of teenagers would be able to work so wonderfully with kids," replied one of Mo-El's mothers.

"Not to mention those nice things they said about us after the match." continued Lo-Rdr's grandmother.

"Yeah. Now I understand why relations are so positive between the Bazalonians and the Az-czzers. Bazalonians are truly swell people." continued Mo-El's other mother.

"Considering what we've seen so far I'm expecting the same treatment from the host country." added Ju-Lee's mother.

"Plus, they've already qualified for the next round, so they don't have to worry about the result." informed Su-Wee's mother.

"Well, not much else to do for now. Let's just enjoy the next game against Myrtannia before heading home." finished Juan Valdez's mother.

The Starblaydi team dressing room after a victory over Yishrael was riotous affair to behold. Players cheered as Stracinho practically drowned himself in a bottle of man-of-the-match champagne, while Keztarr Mahezihim's Dwarven-made stereo pumped out some heavy duty Dwarven Rock, drowning out pretty much everything, save for Stracinho.

"Stray's all up in the heezy, baby," he yelled, "Goal and assist, get in ya big mamma-jammer, offence all the way!"

A high-five with Nuno Volaré followed soon after, shortly followed by pushing and shoving from the Captain, Darijo Cravex, who had scored the second of their goals. At twenty-one, he was the oldest of the players, and had won twenty-six caps for the senior team already in his career. He also had five goals for the senior side to his name, more than any other player in the Under-21s.

"Shut your hole, Stray," he bellowed, "if we hadn't have kept those Yids from scoring, you would have been shyte out of luck for scoring goals to win a match. Defence is where it's at in this game."

"Hey," Kaza piped up, "easy on the rascism, Dar."

"Shut up, Gran'kid," Darijo said, using his customary nickname for Kaza, "if it ain't Starblaydi, it ain't worth a damn."

Cravex was vehemently pro-Starblaydi to the point of total xenophobia. His overt loyalty to Viannor's regime was never in question, and he was vocal in his support for the Praetoran Party when the recent Governor elections had come around. With merely a towel around his waist he stood to attention and saluted like a Starblaydi soldier, beginning the nationalist anthem 'Onward Starblaydia Fair' at the top of his voice. He was soon joined around the room by Volaré and González, the three largest men with the loudest voices and the biggest egos. Save Stracinho, of course.

"Allied States, we're comin' for ya!"

Eagles must think that they are still playing toddlers!

Well, this is a result that no one seemed to be expecting. A close Myrtannian victory maybe... but not a 0-3 blowout. The Eagles held their own for the first 45 minutes, ensuring that no one scored, but after the half, the Eagles became sluggish with fatigue, and the Myrtannian Nymphs scored thrice.

Coach Hill took the loss philosophically. "Lamoni has never played in a U-21 tournament before, so the children don't know what to expect from the other nations. This isn't our AOCAF team, but perhaps some of them will find their way to it in time. If we want to stay in this thing, then we are going to have to win against Bazalonia."

That is indeed the case. The Eagles face the Bazacubs of SDL ally Bazalonia next in a match to determine who goes to the knockouts, and who goes home. We are certain that Coach Hill will be running drills like mad in an attempt to get the Eagles into shape for that match. This U-21 team of ours is composed of volunteers, some of who have never played football in their lives; so Coach Hill has his work cut out for him. As a matter of fact, NONE of the members of this volunteer squad have played for the Lamonian football leagues set up for this age group.

Lamoni - 0
Myrtannia - 3 Khulmey (60), Miyagishima (?,?)

Jaime stood silently outside the door to the Starblaydi dressing room. His team had just drawn two-all against their Bekkside neighbours, The Lowland Clans, and an argument had just broken out amongst his team.

"If yo' chick could defend," Stracinho was yelling, "yours truly would have won the game and we'd be through right now."

"Shut your fucking face, Stray," Cravex was clearly extremely annoyed, "if they hadn't kicked Luis off the park, and tried to do the same to everyone else, then you would have got your little piece of glroy."

"Yeah!" Stracinho thought he'd won, but Jaime, still eavesdropping, knew his Captain better. "I do my job, we can win every match. You don't do your job and this boy don't get paid."

"If you played for this team, Stray," Darijo could be heard through the walls, never mind the door, "you'd do your duty and defend when we need you.to. You're giving it all of this when we're not supporting you up front, when Nuno don't got that perfect every time ball at your overrated fucking feet, but you don't do anything for the team. You get the glory when you've given the blood! Now get out of here, the team are off for a night out on the town."

Jaime smiled. This much ruckus after a draw? He cleared his throat and walked into the room. Everything quickly went quiet.

Demot Daily ~ Hit the Stride

With an tactful display of talent and cohesion, the Under-21s dispatched Hypocria with a two nil result. The team looked more in sync than they during the Pactalia match, with the midfield finaly pulling together and working as a group. Sans showed why Desiance made her captain, shouting out orders at every turn, and raising her level of play as a key member of the squad. Her example shows why the future of Demot football is looking bright, regional and in international play.

The squad started the game off on the right foot, marching down the pitch and working it into Maryweather. She opened up room for a shot, and it just brushed the top of the crossbar. However in the 8th minute, Fae worked his way past a due of defender and fired a bullet from close range. The keeper was ready and punched it away, however Corin was ready and headed the rebound home to put an air of confidence that would never leave them for the match. There was concern however when Pitchkolan went down at the end of half, looking like he might of broken his ankle, and Trien came in at the start of the second half to replace him.

The second half started much like the first, with the Demot side pressing Hypocria with a steady attack and crisp passes. Maryweather recieved the ball from Sans at the top of the box, spun off her defender, and feigned a shot. However the fake cost her time and she was quickly covered by a trio of defenders. Yet she gave a heel kick and Corin gathered the pass and sent a laser on net, the startled the keep, and he was unable to keep the ball out. With the 2-0 cushion, the team never look back.

One final test for the squad remains in Bettia. The match should be full of fireworks with the Bettians hating the colors red and black, our kit colors. This reporter is expecting a brutal affair and likely a win for the Dynamo.

Daniel Davies was sitting in his office which overlooked the bustling London city, which stretched upwards and onwards for quite a while now. It was a very nice city to live in, plenty of history and he enjoyed. His assistant who was helping him put together a report on this new surfin phenomenon that has been reported throughout the Allted States. With all the struggles in the Legal Republic, and the political pressure that was going on, so many people were taking up new sports. Another new thing around Atlantian Oceania was the AO U-21 Championship. The Nova Stars had already fought a bitter draw from behind with Milchama, taking advantage of a weak defender, and now they were going to play the mighty Purple Peril's young squad. HE said that the match was now on, and left.

Davies reached up to the display on his desk and switched it on. He turned the channel to EBC Sports, with the game just starting. As he saw key prospects like Jason James and Tony Jackson step out onto the pitch he swore quietly under his breath. He forgot to put out the press announcements with the roster on it. He shrugged, sat back in his seat and began to watch the game. He muted the announcers on his display. Not that they weren't bad, simply just annoying. He watched as the Purple Peril began by controlling the game, putting overwhelming pressure on the Nova's defence. They pushed up dos Santos into an attacking midfield position, and with the pressure, the defence just couldn't hold out, and on an admittedly nice goal that Purple Peril went up one-nil.

Starblaydia then pulled back, getting their goal. But the Novas weren't simply going to left them float off with a quick easy one goal win. Already, Jason James was plowing through the left wing, and leading the attack with Juri Lenkadovic. James made a beautiful cross into the middle of the pitch. Lenkadovic goes up to head it...PENALTY! Ruiz is arguing with the ref, and he gets a yellow for it! Davies smiles to himself as he watches Cravex tries to pull Ruiz away before he gets himself another card. There was clearly team chemistry problems for Starblaydia, but that didn't mean that the Nova's were going to take advantage of it.

Davies shook his fist as the defence made a stupid giveaway to Matranga, who took it in alone and placed it in the top corner, 2-1 Starblaydia. He cursed silently, and watched as the game balanced out again. The chemistry problems were clear in the Starblaydi side, with Stracinho, arguably their most talented player and certainly best striker, was more or less ignored by their midfield, and he clearly had an attitude problem. Davies sighed and thanked God that his sides had always more or less gotten along. Ruiz nearly got himself another yellow, and the half concluded little more fanfare.

Davies got himself a beer and sat down, reading the Graham City Sun and pondering about who would get the head FF job. He certainly didn't want it, though he had a feeling he was going to be named. There was no way on this good green earth that Westley Stjepan was going to get it, not only was he in disgrace after failing to beat Tynelia, he was likely to keel over in a heart attack. No names had really been mentioned, though the FFLC council wanted to approach Bedistani Nick Reagan, there was no chance in hell he would come get the job. Davies sighed and watched the second half begin. The Nova midfield really performed better and focused, and they were able to shut down Zamoskao and Mahezihim, starving Stracinho, Volare and Matranga of balls to put in the net.

The striker pairing of Stefan Nitrisic and Lenkadovic was working quite well, with potential Krotos Daganopolis replacement Kollas Karmantis was playing exceptionally well on the left side. The second half adavanced with the Novas putting on more and more pressure, then finally bursting through with a good push in the 60th minutes. Davies was impressed with the way that the team changed organization rapidly, and retain their cohesion. After a series of close calls which left Davies clutching the air, James crossed a beatiful ball into the middle, and Lenkadovic sent it off the post, Nitrisic was able to grab the rebound and bury it, tie game. The Novas continued to press, but the Purple Peril regained their desire to play, at least for a moment, and was able to shut down the Novas offense.

Davies turned off the display, happy with a draw.

Who is Resaie Kentiak?

When the fans packed into the stadium for the 2nd of three qualifying round matches in Group A of the Under-21 World Cup, they expected a great match between favorites Vilita and Neu Amerika, who are expected to advance in 2nd place in the group. And a great match is what they got, with both teams fighting for the ball like it was a Cup Final.

Also, as many expected, it was a lone goal that was the difference between the two sides. It was the source of that goal that surprised many. All the fanfare had surrounded Kirstofer Kilpter, the 17 year old Yeaddin Owls AFC Striker. But it was no more than an average performance from Kilpter in a match where another 17 year old was at his best.

It was Marine Coast United's Resaie Kentiak, making his international debut, easily taking home the man of the match honors and the game winning goal to go with it. Although not native to Crosaibi, Kentiak was recruited by the world famous Marine Coast United youth academy, and, following the stunning relegation of Marine Coast to the Declasse division for Season 24, Kentiak found himself thrust into the starting lineup as other stars such as Willie Fenn, Rohan Shapovalov and Antonis Siazzu departed for teams reamining in the Vilitan Top Flight.

Kentiak is a name not known to many outside of Crosaibi, that is, until now. In a match televised all around Atlantian Oceania, Kentiak made a major name for himself, though he revealed in a post match interview that he was not planning an immediate move from Marine Coast United, and hopes he can keep his place in the side when they return to the Stellar Division in Season 25.

Vilita look to have secured their place in the next round, barring a defeat at the hands of the heavily under-matched Misrantis.

Now, that's more like it - Junior Foxes back on form
Two goal triumph puts Pacitalia back in position to qualify

HALOSEN, MYRTANNIA (PSN)
-- After being upset by the Demot U21s it was do-or-die for the Junior Foxes, and they proved their mettle and talent in style, beating the Aroras for the fifth time in their last five U21-level meetings in a 2-0 contest, returning to form and in position to qualify for the knockouts in a group that is proving to be an orgy of death as promised.

Pitching the starting XI for the first time in the competition after being ridiculed for not doing so in the first match, manager Lindifeu Zentrescu relied on the offensive support of star forwards Afino Boranogunta and Massimo da Scupeta to get things done. And on the foot of the latter, he got his wish, as the speedy da Scupeta tallied twice to earn three points for the Blue Foxes and get the team back on the rails.

"We really needed that," captain Bertrando Massimatto said post-match. "It was important for our confidence just as much as our hopes to qualify. A draw wouldn't have cut it; we needed to come out hard and fast and I'm satisfied with the team's effort. They put in a full ninety minutes today."

The captain added it's good to see the team can gel together with their backs against the wall.

"We are a very cohesive unit - we know how to play under pressure," he said. "It's just a case of us opening the tournament on the wrong foot but we appear to have corrected it."

Zentrescu was unavailable for comment after the match.

da Scupeta's first goal came in the fifth minute off a Boranogunta lob. He headed the ball to gain control, let it fall to the ground, then socked it towards goal. The ball connected right in the sweet spot: the shoelaces, before curling off to the top-left past Safwan Sulaiman for a 1-0 lead. Then, da Scupeta doubled his tally in the 54th after superb defending in the back. He crossed pitch, passed to Boranogunta who advanced and passed with the outside of his right foot to da Scupeta as Sulaiman tried to fall onto the ball. It was then an easy flick into goal as da Scupeta earned Pacitalia a solid victory.

Next up is Hypocria, and looking at the standings, Pacitalia will need Bettia to win narrowly combined with a rather substantial Blue Fox victory over Hypocria in order to claim first in Group B heading into the knockouts. Regardless, Pacitalia must win anyway even if they wish to hang on to second, as a draw probably will leave the Blue Foxes in third if Bettia beats Demot. Both of them would finish 2-0-1, while Pacitalia would end up with a record of 1-1-1.

From Halosen, Myrtannia:
Pacitalia 2 : 0 Bettia

PAC: da Scupeta 5', 54'
BET: None

Next up: PAC v HYP, BET v DMT

Myrtannia Wins Again, Gives Gnome Kids Activity Day

HALOSEN - It was, by far, the most bizzare match the Myrtannia Nymphs have ever played. After successive shutout wins against Bazalonia and Lamoni, they faced a group of under 5s from Az-Cz. Accompanied by their parents, the Az-Czzers have lost all of their matches, but recieved crucial tips and lessons in football from the older competition. Myrtannia would be no exception to this rule.

Halosen National Stadium wasn't as packed as it has been, but those who did see the match saw a very odd occurance. Where Myrtannia had been all business in their first two matches, they seemed far more relaxed against the small children. After standing proudly at attention for the national anthem, they took to the field and gave demonstrations on how to shoot the ball properly.

First Nidia War shot one into the Az-Cz net with a scissor kick, which seemed to catch the children's attentions. Then, Khulmey headed one in off a pass from Zora Leckington. Finally, Hettie Miyagishima tapped one in to push the score to 3-0, then helped the kids to the other end of the field to let them try. Khulmey and War helped two lucky Az-Czzer kids shoot the ball into the Myrtannian goal, and both seemed elated. The girls even helped the selected kids celebrate the goal with high-fives and hugs.

After that, the Nymphs broke out activity centers for the Az-Cz children, and each Myrtannian helped run one of the many different tables. Hettie Miyagishima made origami animals and hats for the kids, while Zora Leckington captained the finger painting table. Khulmey, Nidia War, and coach Ljungquist each read a story for the kids near the Az-Cz goal. Not to be outdone, Ok Roynane joined goal keeper Gerda Kingdon and midfielder Marti Gabeline in performing a puppet show that delighted the Az-Cz children.

Once the match ended, the Nymphs greatfully accepted knitted hats from the Az-Cz parents and thanked them for bringing their kids to the United Isles. All in all, a nice, relaxing day before heading back to work in preparation for the Quarterfinals match.

"It was a lot of fun," Miyagishima said with a smile, "An interesting change from the regular matches, but a nice break. Plus, this hat I got is awesome!"

The Nymphs will be back to work tomorrow on their off day before they head back out on Monday against the U21 side from Milchama. Milchama finished the group stage with a close loss to Starblaydia, and finished 1-1-1. Despite their only win being a close match against newbie Yihsrael, Myrtannia will definitely treat them as a very real threat.

"The Dryads got knocked out of AOCAF XVI in the Quarts, and we don't want to suffer the same fate. We're going to work hard and long to make sure we're ready for Milchama," explained coach Ljungquist, "After all, these girls are the next generation of Dryads, and more importantly, we're playing to a home crowd every match. We want to win one for the United Isles."

In related news, the Sports Department of the Halosen News-Times has released its predictions for the Quarterfinals:

Vilita & Turori v. Bazalonia: The Eel Cat Things have been on a roll, defeating all of their Group A opponents and winning the group outright. Led by Krisofer Kilpter most of the way, they've looked very strong, continuing to play so after winning the title at AOCAF XVI. Bazalonia recovered nicely from their loss to Myrtannia, capped with a big 4-0 win over Lamoni on the final matchday to secure their spot in the Quarts. The Bazacubs will give it a good run, and may have enough talent to push the ECT's (Eel Cat Things) to ET or even Penalties. However, we think that V&T ultimately triumph in a close match. Our Pick: V&T 3-2 BAZ AET

Demot v. Neu Amerika: Demot was the surprise team in the Group of Death, registering wins over Hypocria and Pacitalia along with a draw against Bettia today. They've been playing extremely well, and look to continue that in the knockouts. However, Neu Amerika's Pioneers also surprised in Group A, losing only to unbeaten Vilita & Turori. They too could continue that strong play in the knockouts against Demot. This one can literally go either way, and the slightest mistake could upset the balance in favor of one side. Demot might well have a better side overall, though. Our Pick: DEM 1-0 NEA

Starblaydia v. Pacitalia: Quite possibly the most intriguing matchup in the Quarterfinals, as the Men in Muave face the Blue Foxes for the first time in this tournament. Starblaydia comes in off a draw with TLC, and a close win over Milchama that gave them Group C's title. Pacitalia recovered wonderfully from its Day 1 loss to Demot with victories against Bettia and Hypocria, and seems to have returned to form. This is another 'can go either way' match, but we think that after yet another close match, the Blue Foxes are ultimately the winners and send the Purple Peril home with the wooden spoon. Our Pick: STB 3-4 PAC

Myrtannia v. Milchama: As we are playing in this match, we will remain professional and not write any prediction... still, we can't help but say: MYR 2-1 MIL... d'oh! We did it anyway... heads will roll!

The final score from Halosen National Stadium:

Myrtannia 3 - 2 Az-Cz
(War 1', Khulmey 2', Miyagishima 5') (15', 19')

Political Allies Battle It Out, Bazacubs Dominate

The Last match for the Bazacubs was a match that not only had the Bazacub's face Bazalonia's closest Ally, The Lamonian Hawks, but was a decider to determine who goes through to the quarter finals. Despite being the closest of friends politically that did not make any difference to the way they played. We have heard that the Lamonian Coach, Coach Hill, had them doing drills inpreperation for the match.

The Bazalonian coach on the otherhand took a different approach, a combined Mental and Phsyical training. While in-fact the team did train by doing various Drills and other more secretive physical training while doing so they where given mental exercises to do while training. And they where not allowed to stop until they solved the puzzle. We managed to get a comment from the coach before the match. "Soccer is a mental game as much as it is a physical game. Plans and strategies worked out before the game never work as planned once they come in contact with the play of soccer. So players have to think, adapt the play, to acheive the same ends, scoring. And to do that they need to have excellent abstract thinking and spatial awareness abilities. This is what I am trying to acheive. It's much like chess, setting up the move and then striking when the time is right."

Just whether the coach of the Bazacubs would use chess as a training tool in the near future is yet to be seen but his so far unconventional approach seems to have worked against the Lamonians and barely missed out on giving the Bazacubs a win against the Mrytannians.

"Yes, thank's for the Analysis now, give us the report of the match!" I hear you say and you would be right. The match started as a flurry of activity, nothing seemed to have happened but what was not happening was happening fast. It wasn't until the 23rd minute that the pace of the activity slowed down. In fact it slowed to almost a crawl. Amazingly it was a sudden burst of speed by midfielder David Myfanwy that had caught the Lamonians of guard and sloted the ball through the goalkeeper and into the back of the net in the 29th minute.

The Second Goal started way back with Goal Keeper, Paul Kanga's younger brother Joshua Kanga. In an extremely unusual move Joshua Left the net , and nearly left the penalty box with the ball inhand before kicking it over the heads of all the players. The ball sailed through the air and landed on the ground with a Lamonian defender coming towards it, Ricky Yunn, a forward and captain of the team reached the ball first from towards the Bazacubs goal and managed to step around the defender leaving Ricky alone against the Lamonian Goalie. The hit the back of the net as it just clipped the edges of the Lamonian Goalkeeper's fingers. This was in thr 45th minute just before the half-time whistle blew.

The Third and fourth goals where just as exciting as the previous 2 and occured in the second half. The Lamonians had in total three real good chances to convert into goals, one in the 24th minute when the Bazacubs had suddenly slowed the game down but a tackle from Xia Chia stopped that possibility. The other 2 where the ball going over the top of the goal and one shot going directly to the keeper.

With such a win against Lamoni the Bazacubs have qualified for the AO Under 21 Quarter Finals with a total of 6 points out of 9. The only blemish to the team was the Mrytannian squad that beat the team 2 nil in their first tournament. Let's look at the matchup for the Quarter-Finals. Predicted winner has been emphasised trough bolding

Match 1 - Mitchell Technologies Field (Blackheart, Sayiid Island):
Vilita & Turori (3-0-0) v. Bazalonia (2-0-1)

Yep, the Bazacubs face the Eel Cat Things of the Vilita/Turori combined team, The team has an impressive 3-0-0 win, but in our opinion this is because they where in an easy group and so the Bazacubs, especially with their experience should win against this foe.

Match 2 - Vanhaanen Sporting Complex (Vanhaanen)
Demot (2-1-0) v. Neu Amerika (2-0-1)

Demot face Socialist Union, The team did very well against a strong Pacitalian, Hypocrian and Bettian squads, Bettia was their only hiccup drawing. Never the less Demot is a strong squad is expected to walk over Group of Putz (A)'s second qualifier

Match 3 - Mari City Park (Mari City, Scandon Island)
Starblaydia (2-1-0) v. Pacitalia (2-0-1)

As in other footballing competitions we think Starblaydia is just too strong against Pacitalia, expect a purple victory.

Match 4 - Al-Zataar Olympic Field (Salahadin City)
Myrtannia (3-0-0) v. Milchama (1-1-1)

Myrtannia one of the two teams with a perfect record, however unlike V & T this perfect record actually means something they are a good-side, up against to the team with the worst performance in qualifying? The hosts should easily advance

New Goalie Different Result

After the 3 mistakes from Halutz Dalton that cost Milchama the match and an apparent easy match victory. This time though the Warriors were able to stick to it and got the well deserved victory over Yihsrael. Coach Alex Lans said, "This was a game we needed to win and we did it. These guys were supposed to be the easiest people in the group so all we needed to do was beat them and we did it with style. I like how we played today."
Now for the report on how Milchama scored:

19th minute: Yihsrael scored as a nice play by Spincic left Nydick all alone and Nydick easily scored to give the Shields a 1-0 lead.

32nd minute: The quick counter, which is becoming a staple for the Warriors, gets moving. Joey Harris quickly down the flank as he attempts to cross the ball. It's on target! and Tal Flar moves in, jumpsssssss and heads the ball in! GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!! 1-1 tie. A nice job by the defense to clear followed by Joey Harris jumping all over the place to score and make it 1-1.

45th minute: Halftime. The half was back and forth but the Warriors definitely looked more dangerous on the offensive.

50th minute: Marchakov takes a look on the inside. He likes it and he sidesteps the midfielder on his way down. He kicks the ball recklessly forward and is now in a foot race with Russ Rimar. Rimar trying to do it but can't beat the speedy Marchakov. Marchakov takes one look and passes back to Kevin Flossmore. Flossmore, takes one step in and crosses. Flar jumps but its over his head BUT THERE'S AVI BELMOWITZ! Belmowitz all alone on the far side of the box. He traps the ball and shoots! 2-1 MILCHAMA! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!! A seemingly too hard hit cross by Flossmore was perfect as it went right to a charging Belmowitz who easily took his time and scored the easy goal to make it 2-1 Milchama.

64th minute: The crosses have been coming in for the Warriors. Two of them have led to both of their goals. It seems like the commentators worries of poor crosses have been misfounded. Anyway Milchama again on the offensive. This time not a counter attack. Rintell over to Marchakov forward to Esrimdo, back to Marchakov, two steps forward and a pass to Rintell. Rintell waits one second and sees a running Kevin Flossmore. Rintell with the pass over the top as Flossmore runs onto it. Hacynski trying to stop the ball but can't as Flossmore beats him to it and lobs it over. Rimar desperately and won't get there GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!! Two cheeky lobs by Kevin Flossmore and Kenny Rintell gives Milchama an insurmountable looking 3-1 lead. A very nice goal from the youngsters.

88th minute: Yihsrael pulls one back through the brilliant work of Freeman Musemeche who beat Wilkirk and Mitchell before unleaching a wonder shot that didn't give Fletcher Steele a chance.

Final Score:
Milchama 3 (Flar 32, Belmowitz 50, Flossmore 64)
Yihsrael 2 (Nydick 19, Musemeche 88)

Predictions (Again?!)

Considering we lost to Starblaydia and there's no use dwelling on the past it means its time to dwell on the future. Meaning of course its time for predictions on who will do what where and with whom (Although you might not want to know the last part). As most people are just predicting the quarterfinals we have dared to be different! and go all the way to predict the winner of the tournament:

We start here:

Vilita & Turori (3-0-0) v. Bazalonia (2-0-1)- V&T got lucky as they got the weakest group in the competition in terms of names and newspaper reports. Therefore they're 3-0-0 record is kind of deceiving. Thus we predict the BazaCubs in an "upset." 3-1.

Demot (2-1-0) v. Neu Amerika (2-0-1)- Demot knocked off Pacitalia and they were in a tougher group making this one a no brainer. Demot easily goes through to the tune of a 2-0 victory.

Starblaydia (2-1-0) v. Pacitalia (2-0-1)- oooooooooooooooh. The match up of the round by far. Starblaydia with their self acclaimed "best football program in the world" vs. Pacitalia who legitimately claim the title "Best football program that doesn't compete in the World Cup." So now what about results of this match. Well that comes down to history and Starblaydia has downright obliterated Pacitalia. Therefore of course Pacitalia 2-1 AET.

Myrtannia (3-0-0) v. Milchama (1-1-1)- We'll try not to biased for this one but our U21s have a tendency to fail in octos of the NS U21 Cup. That would mean that we would lose here and our performance certainly reflects that, espiecially against the host. Except that have a problem with winning outrounds as well. Meaning it will come down who wants to lose more. The score: 3-3, 4-4 AET, 6-5 Milchama advances on PKs.

Semi finals:
Demot v. Bazalonia- Demot becomes suprise finalists after they beat the exhausted Bazacubs. We all know that Cubs can't make finals (just look at the Chicago version) and after getting a lead the Bazacubs blow it. 3-3, 4-3 AET as Demot gets through after going 3-1 down.

Milchama v. Pacitalia- An exhausted U21 team against another exhausted U21 team. This means a very tired match with a lot of goals. Milchama though can't beat opponents of this caliber so we lose 3-2. A close match that's just not good enough.

Third place match:
Bazalonia v. Milchama- Cubs can't win important games. I'm telling you, I've rooted for them too long to not understand this. Therefore Bazalonia is doomed again as they lose to the Warriors 4-2. There's also the fact that we always beat them and they have our worst ever former coach coaching them.

Final:
Pacitalia v. Demot- The match people actually care about. Demot has gotten this far and actually beat Pacitalia in the group stage. However that means a mad Pacitalia and a mad Pacitalia goes out and storms Demot before they even have a chance to start doing anything. 4-1 Pacitalia takes the trophy and the glory.

----------------------------------------

"Wait we seriously just took Pacitalia to win something"

"Yeh"

"That was really dumb"

"They're due"

"Dude that's like taking Audioslavia to win the World Cup"

"Demot was certaintly not going to win"

"No wonder your NCAA pool always suck"

"Shut up you"

"What an uplifting trip this was. To see the way all three nations responded with such friendliness," began Lo-Rdr's grandmother.

"Indeed. The games and things that Myrtannia had set up were quite fun. I think the kids really enjoyed them." said Go-Mar's mother.

Sa-Ra's mother piped up, "indeed. Sa-Ra loved the origami."

"And teaching Youn Ji-Hyun and Flo-Ma how to score," added Ct-Pt's mother "was very nice."

"Hopefully we'll keep in touch after this tournament." said one of Mo-El's mothers.

Demot Daily ~ Championship?

Well it was not the expected the result for the squad, but the draw does work out well for them in the end, still taking the group with suprising ease, given the squads in their group. However, each game was a hard fought affair and the squad can take extreme pride in coming out on top, with their only "slip up" being the draw on the last matchday, when qualification was all but assured.

Before the match, the squad recieved some great news. Pitchkolan's ankle isn't broken, but instead it was just a sever sprain. However Desiance has said that the youngster will be unable to continue on in the tournament and that Trien will start in his place. The squad took the ignitive and got goals by Maryweather and Corin in the 8th and 21st minutes respectively, with Sans and Fae bothing getting assists in the affairs. However the squad gave up a goal in the 79th minute, and then a poor call in the 87th minute lead to a Bettia penalty, which was converted with little problems.

The team will have to work on dicipline if they are to advance, however they recieved a favorable oppenent in Neu Amerika, who reached the quarters with a 2-0-1 record. Early line has Demot has the favorite, and its hard to disagree, with Demot having the tougher of the two groups, yet the team should be wary of the upset from their oppisition. Here is the full predictions.

Match 1 - Mitchell Technologies Field (Blackheart, Sayiid Island):
Vilita & Turori (3-0-0) v. Bazalonia (2-0-1)

Easy group results in lack of prepartion and the Cubs pull off an impressive victory. 3-1

Match 2 - Vanhaanen Sporting Complex (Vanhaanen)
Demot (2-1-0) v. Neu Amerika (2-0-1)

We display why soo many media are picking us to move onto the Semis with a display of talent that will leave many in awe. 3-0

Match 3 - Mari City Park (Mari City, Scandon Island)
Starblaydia (2-1-0) v. Pacitalia (2-0-1)

The Blue foxes edge out the purple on PKs. (2:2 AET) 3-2 PKs

Match 4 - Al-Zataar Olympic Field (Salahadin City)
Myrtannia (3-0-0) v. Milchama (1-1-1)

The hosts ride the home field advantage to the Semis while Milchama will wonder what if. 2-0

Pioneers Annihilate Nedalia, Advance to Quarter Finals

The Socialist Union's second match against Vilita/Turori ended up seeing our young Pioneers outmatched by the more powerful 'Things'. On a positive note, the Pioneers did prevent Kristofer Kilpter from scoring, which was a major focus of Comrade Demchok. A 1-0 loss will have to be accepted after a long battle on the field.

In brighter news, the Pioneers returned to true Socialist form in their final group match against the Nedalia Lions. Despite the experience of the capitalist opponent, the Socialist Union dominated the match, allowing just one goal. The brother/sister tandem of Gorychkas once again performed SUNA's scoring, and the capitalist Lions were helpless in the face of their onslaught.

Hobert Gorychka took a shot in minute 30 which deflected off the side bar of the goal. He rectified this with a follow up shot that sent the ball in for the Socialist Union's first goal of the match. More goals were added by his sister Scarlett, who bravely took on two bigger Nedalian defenders later in the match. She moved past both of them skillfully and scored the second goal. In the second half, Scarlett scored from 40 yards out again, in another 'miracle' goal.

The only mistake of the match was a poor foul in minute 89 that gave Nedalia a penalty kick. Comrade Keeper Baumiester was unable to keep the ball out of the goal, so a shutout win was narrowly missed. In the end, the Pioneers won 3-1, and made plans for an extended stay in the United Isles of Myrtannia.

The quarter final match for the Socialist Union will be against the nation that won Group B: Demot. New to the region's sporting events like the Socialist Union, Demot has played strongly as well. Most foreign (read 'capitalist') news sources have selected Demot to advance to the semi finals. This simply means they will be more surprised when the Pioneers advance further still. Here are the only Socialist predictions for the upcoming matches:

Match 1 - Mitchell Technologies Field (Blackheart, Sayiid Island):
Vilita & Turori (3-0-0) v. Bazalonia (2-0-1)

The only nation to defeat SUNA in play will be overcome by the resurgent Bazalonian side. They should change their nickname to the Bazaclubs after throttling Lamoni, and now Vilita and Turori. 1-4 Bazalonia.

Match 2 - Vanhaanen Sporting Complex (Vanhaanen)
Demot (2-1-0) v. Neu Amerika (2-0-1)

The much vaunted Demotians are unable to handle the might of the Pioneers. Easy group? Nonsense. Socialist Union sends Demot home with the wooden spoon, 2-0.

Match 3 - Mari City Park (Mari City, Scandon Island)
Starblaydia (2-1-0) v. Pacitalia (2-0-1)

Our Bekkside Comrades (honorary Comrades, at least) will ship the Junior Foxes home with a convincing victory. Purple Power reigns, 5-2.

Match 4 - Al-Zataar Olympic Field (Salahadin City)
Myrtannia (3-0-0) v. Milchama (1-1-1)

The foolish Warriors will be no match for the tournament hosts, and will be in a daze as the Nymphs steamroll them. Myrtannia FTW, 3-0.

Socialist Union 3, Nedalia 1
(H. Gorychka 30', S. Gorychka 45', 71') (#7 89')

Zamoskao checked his hair in the mirror inside his locker of the Starblaydi team dressing room. Earlier on he had scored both of Starblaydia's goals to defeat Milchama. Quiet and thoughtful, even at the tender age of sixteen, Zamoskao approached everything with a technical, intelligent eye. He played either on the left side or in the centre of midfield with his trademark style of simple, effective, crisp passes like the click of a finger. It was with two strikes in that pure style of his that got Starblaydia's goals, putting the ball past Halutz Dalton with his classic, side-foot technique. The first was delicately placed in the bottom right-hand corner of the net from the centre of the penalty area, while the second whipped into the upper left-hand corner from way out wide on the left.

As ever, Zamoskao didn't appeared to be phased by his acheivements. He kept the same expressionless look on his face and went about his business as per usual. Oberlander liked that about him, but it was also a cause for concern, If he genuinely wasn't elated by winning a game with his goals, from midfield especially, then there was something amiss. If, on the other hand, he was simply cooler than a Hockey Canadian cucumber in a freezer, then that was a good thing.

Claudio González, his teammate at the Tribe Urjali youth team, came over to congratulate him. Claudio, at twenty years old, was one of the elder statesmen of this team, with eight senior caps to his name already.

"If you can do something like that against Marti, Angano and Terasti next match," Claudio said, "then we'll be in the Semis for sure."

Zamoskao merely nodded. He had his training schedule all set up, the videos of who he had to watch on the Pacitalian team were already sitting on top of his DVD player. He would be prepared, as always. Claudio walked away, off to tell Betanii Marrones how well she'd played, too.

Blue Foxes through to the knockouts; face Starblaydia
Squad plans to 'ignore predictions and play our way'

Pacitalia finished the group stage with a win to send them into the knockouts, defeating a hapless Hypocrian side 2-1 in full-time, a side that hasn't really had any luck to speak of during their worst group stage on record. It hasn't been an easy cup for the young Pacitalians either, starting off on the wrong foot with an upset loss to Demot before reverting to tooth-and-nail fundamentals to score victories over tough opposition in Bettia and, now, Hypocria.

Afino Boranogunta, who has been eerily silent on the goal front in his appearance at the first Atlantian Oceanian Under-21 Football Championship, finally stepped up to the task, putting the Blue Foxes on the board in the 25th minute. His short chip from within the six-yard box beat the Hypocrian keeper and put the Foxes up 1-0 early before they doubled their lead courtesy a superbly-placed free kick by the team captain, Bertrando Massimatto, two minutes into the first half's stoppage time.

The sole Hypocrian man forward, Nuno Morales, cut Pacitalia's lead in half, finally putting something on the board for the Hyppos (just their second goal in three games). However, it was not enough as Pacitalia held their flanks tight until the match to secure safe (albeit last-minute) passage to the quarterfinals to face the Starblaydi squad, who earned seven points in the group phase.

Various media sources are split on who will emerge from the quarterfinals victorious, but team members say they will not let favourable (or unfavourable) predictions get to their heads.

"We can't really be bothered by predictions that we'll lose, and we shouldn't be tempted by predictions that we will win," squad captain Bertrando Massimatto said in response to the media predictions, the most notable being a Neu Amerikan network's prediction the 'Pups would lose by an embarrassing 5-2. "The fact remains we have done reasonably well against Starblaydi opposition in U21 World Cup and our teams are on equal footing in terms of talent and cohesion. Regardless of who wins, we know it will be a close and hard-fought victory for either side, and you can be certain that we will be playing at one-hundred-ten percent to make it through to the semifinals."

Reports suggest the starting XI will mostly be intact with the exception of Marco Fanazori, who appeared to suffer a light ankle sprain in the 64th minute and had to be substituted in favour of Michelangelo Andatiforga. It appears Zentrescu may start Andatiforga in the quarterfinals match as a precaution in case Pacitalia goes any further in this tournament and Fanazori's services are needed down the line.

Andatiforga, a versatile midfielder who shines in offensive roles and can play either at left or in the centre, currently spends his non-tournament days in the graduate development program of NG Sapuntoli. The stocky, six-foot-tall, seventeen-year-old is admired by women, seemingly anywhere and everywhere, for his muscular frame and good looks, something he enjoys showcasing as a male model in his spare time. However, Andatiforga's real talents lie on the pitch where he has been a solid left-midfielder for the 2004-05 Divizione Premera champions. He helped Sapuntoli finish in the league top three although Fiorentina were eventually crowned champs in 2005-06.

Andatiforga has 7 goals in 42 appearances for the league side, and has appeared in a cumulative total of 2.29 matches for the U21 Blue Foxes, his biggest offensive contribution at the international level coming when he assisted on a goal during the Pups' 4-1 victory over Becquerelia in the opening match of the U21WC21 group stage.

From Halosen, Myrtannia:
Pacitalia 2 : 1 Hypocria

PAC (2-0-1): Boranogunta 25', Massimatto 45+2'
HYP (0-0-3): Nuno Morales 79'

NEXT UP: STB v PAC (QF), HYP v n/a (E)

Nymphs Slay Warriors, Junior Blue Foxes Await!

SALAHADIN CITY - For one of the sides that stepped onto the pitch Monday night, it would be the last waltz. At least until the Second AO U21 Football Cup, anyway. The match featured one of the three unbeaten group champions against the team with the worst record in qualifying. Simple math and all but the Milchaman foreign press predicted a Nymphs victory on paper. Paper and reality are two separate things, as the senior Dryads know all too well.

Playing to a packed Al-Zataar Olympic Field crowd, the Nymphs seemed every bit as relaxed as they were against the kiddies from Az-Cz two days ago. The atmosphere in the stands was decidedly more tense, especially for the majority of the crowd garbed in Orange and Blue. Myrtannia has an unfortunate history of being unable to score when it counts most in pressure matches. Just look at the downfall of the Dryads in all of their AOCAF knockout losses and you'll get an idea what we mean. The Nymphs went out determined to prove that they won't follow the same hexes that govern Dryads play.

With many of those very Dryads looking on from the stands, including Dania Figary, September Rollock, and Roz Gabino, the Nymphs approached pre-match warmups with an easy-going demeanor. Once the national anthems presentation came around, there was no one person to perform 'Stand Strong, United Isles'; the entire Myrtannian crowd joined the Nymphs in singing it. Not entirely in key or melodic, but quite stirring nonetheless. At the anthem's conclusion, a huge roar erupted from the crowd, and Sun Bursts waved everywhere. The message was clear: 'This is our house'... as cliche as that is.

Once the opening kickoff came around, the Nymphs didn't approach the match in the same way that saw them shut out Lamoni and Bazalonia. Instead, the Nymphs pulled back and played conservatively to open the match, not pressing the attack for the first half hour. This strategy seemed to be aimed at tiring out the Milchamans, but it did have its price. Eventually, the Warriors got through the young Nymphs defense, and once they saw the goal, they would not be denied.

Belmowitz got past Ok Roynane, and fooled Gerda Kingdon before stuffing the ball into the bottom left corner in a nice fake-out play. The boos crashing down from the crowd accompanied the fact that Milchama had taken a sudden, dramatic 1-0 lead. This prompted the Nymphs to retaliate the best way they knew how - attack without mercy and get their own back.

Perhaps the Az-Cz match made the Nymphs a little too relaxed, but the Belmowitz goal woke them up. Unless Myrtannia scored, the daydream would be over, leaving the Nymphs to wonder 'what if'. However, the Nymphs weren't about to let their tournament end early, and they pressed the attack. All five forwards charging, the Warriors didn't seem to know what to do. Here's the AIR 4 call:

"And Khulmey takes possession, pushes up the pitch looking for a chance... the Warriors are having a hard time keeping on their toes... pass over to Leckington... Zora lines up a shot, strikes..... GOOOOOAAAALLLL!! Myrtannia is back in it! 1-1 the tally as Zora Leckington records her first international score."

Leckington's equaliser got the crowd back into a better mood, and boos turned into raucous cheers. The half ended not long after that, leaving the score level at 1-1 as both sides went into the lockers. There was so much tension you could cut it with a dull, rusty pair of kindergarten safety scissors. Well, something like that.

"We slipped a bit early, but we pushed the attack, pressed the issue, and now things are even Steven. Watch out in the second half, though... the Warriors won't know what hits 'em," coach Ljungquist told the media before heading for the lockers herself.

Myrtannia came out in the second half and certainly did hit Milchama - quite hard at that. While the Warriors began the half in possession, the Nymphs stole it back and pressed the attack against a bewildered Warriors defense unprepared to fight off such an assault so soon. Leckington took the ball, dribbled around a staggering Warriors defender, and then crossed it to (who else?) Hettie Miyagishima. Miyagishima landed an excellent scissor kick that sent the ball flying past the Milchaman Keeper, and gave the Nymphs the lead for good.

Only five minutes later, the Nymphs regained possession again and invaded the Warriors' back third again. Once again, a pass was sent Miyagishima's way, and once again the forward from Heihachi High struck it home. Suddenly, it was Myrtannia ahead 3-1. Not only had the Nymphs overcame a one goal defecit, but they had scored three unanswered, and built a comfortable lead.

Milchama brought them back to Earth slightly by managing a second goal at the 75' mark, courtesy of Flar. To Myrtannia, it was like a drunk, anorexic matador taunting a bull who'd just woken up on the wrong side of the pen. The Nymphs took the role of the bull to heart and charged forward again, wanting to solidify the win and their ticket to the Semis.

That was provided by Nidia War, who got a beautiful pass from Miyagishima, and headed it past the Milchaman keeper. Now the score line stood at 4-2 in favor of Myrtannia, and no more points would be posted for the rest of the match. Having gotten their own back again, the Nymphs settled into the gritty conservative defensive play that shut down Bazalonia and Lamoni previously. Once again, it worked to stop the opponent, this time Milchama, who were handed the wooden spoon as the final whistle sounded.

Joy and relief intermixed as the Nymphs breifly celebrated the victory and a berth in the Semi-finals. The fans, on the other hand, celebrated like there was no tomorrow, and clubs across the United Isles reportedly stayed open extra late to accomodate nation-wide mini-parties. One can only shudder and imagine the scenes if Myrtannia were to reach the Final or win the tournament.

The Nymphs staved off premature celebration because of who they will face next in the knockouts. It will be Pacitalia's Blue Foxes, who stopped the Men in Mauve in a thrilling Extra Time victory earlier in the night. Pacitalia, as any informed Myrtannian football fan knows, is Myrtannia's perrenial football boogeyman. No United Isles team has ever even drawn with a Pacitalian side, let alone won. Some of the lowlights:

AOCAF XIII, Group Stage: MYR 0-5 PAC
AOCAF XIV, 3PPO: MYR 1-2 PAC
AOCAF XVI, QF: MYR 2-2 PAC (2-4 AET)

"We're not the Dryads, we're the Nymphs. History has no bearing here, and we're very hungry to give the United Isles a berth in the Final," said Nidia War, who is likely to start for the Dryads in the next AOCAF, "We're out to prove that we're no pushovers; that this isn't all a fluke. And... Hettie, stop playing with that hat! That's silly!"

Myrtannia will have to defeat the Blue Foxes for the first time in any international football match if they wish to appear in the Final in the nation's capital. Anything is possible, and Pacitalia may well be more tired after their extra time win over Starblaydia. If nothing else, it will add to the rich, growing history of one of AO's new football rivalries. With relations between our two nations friendly, and the rivalry itself just as friendly, it will be a fun match to watch. The more rested, home-field advantage holding Nymphs might look to have an edge on paper, but nothing is won on paper.

In other action, unbeaten Vilita & Turori fell as most experts predicted to Bazlaonia to the tune of 0-2. Meanwhile, Demot outshot Neu Amerika 5-3 to advance to the Semis, where they will clash with the Bazacubs.

The final from Al-Zataar Olympic Field:

Myrtannia 4 - 2 Milchama
(Leckington 41', Miyagishima 49' & 54', War 77') (Belmowitz 30', Flar 75')

Demot Daily ~ Triumphant Gain

The media outlets had this game hyped up to be a close affair, and the final scoreline would indicate so, but it was far from it, with the result already secured just 20 minutes into the affair. The team pushed across goals in those first 20 as if they were going out of style, and then coasted to a comfortable win.

Smith got the ball rolling in the 4th minute, as he, Fae, and Alexander tick tack toed through the midfield and backline, making their oppisiton look downright foolish. Fae recieved a final pass from Alexander, and pushed off Nwakanma and raced to place one past Baumiester. However his rush caused the shot to go off target, bouncing off the post. Smith beat Kahalehoe to the ball, and placed it into the opposite corner.
Just two minutes later, the team had a corner off a defelected Maryweather shot. As she sent in the outswinger, Fae brought it down with his chest, and laid it off for Sans. She met the ball neatly, but stumbled as she tried to move the ball to her strong foot, she was able to regain control, but was confronted by Laudadio. She then poked it through his legs, and fired a curling shot that went clear between Baumiester's gloves.

Then in the 11th minute, the Dynamo struck again, this time in an unusual counter fashion. The Neus had produced an effective attack and has committed most of their defenders forward, when Walls intecepted a Adamsonis pass, and got it quickly to Alexander. He turned upfield, and only had Kernodle between him and the goal. He rushed his defender, who got caught off guard and lost his footing. Grinning, Alexander lobbed it over the off balanced defender, and deked past him, collecting the loose ball, and angling himself towards the net. Inside the box, Baumiester tried to time his rush and dive perfectly, but Alexander did a sudden 360 right before his dive, and then guided the ball into the empty net. Maryweahter scored on a penalty in the 16th minute when she had recieved a through ball from Smith, only to be taken down 5 yards inside the box by Laudadio, who recieved the immedaite yellow. Maryweather's shot brushed the bottom of the crossbar on its way in, and Baumiester look completely miserable in net. Yet the torment was not quite over, as Triefan had managed to slip into the box unnoticed in the 20th minute, and was able to redirect a Fae shot past Baumiester for a 5-0 scoreline.

The team then eased off the gas pettle, and played only in thier half, barely allowing goals in the 79th minute, 84th, and then in injury time to Gorychka, who got the hattrick. Now the team will prepare to fend off a formidable foe in the Bazacubs. The Cubs were able to knock off the previously undfeated Vilita/Turori things in a convincing 2-0 fashion. It will be a close affair by all accounts, with the team's near equal in talent level. Wisdom would say to choose the Bazaolonians due to expierence the nation has in large scale competitons, but a hunch has this reporter feeling that the Demot side will pull a rabbit out of the hat and suprise many by making the final.

Predictions

Match 1 (Al-Zataar Olympic Field in Salahadin City, Ramalah Province):

Demot (3-1-0) v. Bazalonia (3-0-1)

The Dynamo have the upmost respect for the Bazacubs as both a team, and for the entire nation. However the Demot side will find an extra gear and manage to get past their respected oppisiton. 3:2 AET (2:2)

Match 2 (Mari City Park in Mari City, Scandon Island):

Myrtannia (4-0-0) v. Pacitalia (3-0-1)

Pacitalia will get a chance for revenge as they edge by the hosts in an ugly affair. 4-3

Andatiforga's cup debut rocks the house in spectacular extra-time triumph
And it's Pacitalia v Myrtannia once more!

HALOSEN, MYRTANNIA (PSN)
-- Captain Massimatto promised a one-hundred-and-ten percent effort Monday night, and boy, was he ever on the ball - no pun intended. Massi's squad stole the show in Halosen in an as-promised thriller that went to extra time, was arguably the match of the quarterfinals round, and finished with a total of nine goals scored. When all was said and done, the Junior Blue Foxes emerged with a 3-3 (4-5 AET) victory over those pesky, and very talented, boys from Starblaydia.

The Pups tallied first, with the captain himself striking a rocket that deflected down off the bar and behind the hands of Starblaydi keeper Jiino Graikalonii in the 14th minute. Extremely pleased with the early score, fans got to their feet and stayed there for the better part of twenty minutes, well after Kaza Matranga's first goal equalised in the 26th.

A war of attrition ensued for the remainder of the first half with neither side budging or appearing to tire significantly. Level at one apiece moving into halftime, Massimatto appeared to put the Blue Foxes up 2-1 in first half stoppage time, very similar to his match-winner against Hypocria in the group stage. However, camera angles confirmed the ball touched, but did not cross the line by more than half its diameter before being swatted away by Graikalonii, meaning the goal didn't count, and the score remained knotted, 1-1, reaching the half.

After the halftime rest was in the books, two-time World Cup winner and squad manager Jaime Oberlander's team talk appeared to spur the Starblaydi on to a higher level of play as just ninety-four seconds in, Matranga tallied her second of the match to put the Purple up by one. But no worries seemed to emanate from the Pacitalian side, and their patience and calm was rewarded just five minutes later when star striker Afino Boranogunta came through with his second of the tournament, a curling shot from just inside the 22-yard box, to re-knot the score at 2-2.

However, down the stretch it appeared the momentum of the as-of-then undefeated Starblaydi was slowly helping the Purple Peril's junior squad take control of the match. Nuno Volaré tallied in the 71st to the chagrin of Pups fans, who were just as disturbed by the fact that they were once again at a deficit, as they were to the fact that it was the second-straight match somebody with "Nuno" in their name had scored on the home side. With a 3-2 scoreline looming ominously overhead, the Junior Blue Foxes did what any offensively minded team would do in this situation: all-out attack. Here's the call from PSN announcer and UK transplant Bryan Simms.

"...Foxes moving the ball up the pitch very well, slowly, calmly... they don't look to be under too much pressure to score... too bad the fans are screaming at them to do just that and they are indeed down by one with probably about three or four minutes left including injury time... Marti cutting past Mahezihim over on the far-right... ball lobbed and played to the centre for Massimatto... he'll control it up the pitch a bit, my goodness has he improved at central play over the years, he really is a delight to watch, isn't he... ball played left for Andatiforga... he will run it rather quickly up and the Foxes' offensive charge is parallel with the crossline of the twenty-two yard box... he'll cross it over for da Scupeta... a goal! It's in! It's in! Oh, glorious! Can you believe it! Can you! A gorgeous strike... simply decadent... undescribable maturity under pressure from the team's senior squad member, a veteran striker proving his mettle right when he's needed and by the grace of God we're headed to extra time for sure... listen to the fans! Would it be the understatement of the year to say they're bloody pleased! Wow... I am stunned. Fantastic strike... superb finish."

And so to extra-time it was, and for Pacitalian fans the tension, rather than abating from relief that they had equalised with the Starblaydi with a stunning 3-3 scoreline off veteran striker Massimo da Scupeta's amazing strike, simply grew to undescribable levels. Reports suggest a couple fans even had to excuse themselves to be sick in the stadium facilities because they couldn't handle the extreme excitement and anxiety of watching a further thirty minutes of winner-takes-all football.

This time the momentum was clearly with the Junior Foxes and Michelangelo Andatiforga proved his worth to the team, even be it as a substitute for the resting Marco Fanazori. Fans screamed with delight, jumping feet into the air and waving their flags and scarves, honking battle horns ecstatically as Andatiforga celebrated another superb goal for the Pups, his head proving a fitting redirector for a Samatini Telio corner seven minutes in. But the Starblaydi were not about to let a 4-3 lead become a 4-3 extra-time victory, as a dos Santos/Matranga/Stracinho offensive charge eight minutes later proved.

"...dos Santos to the left of Cristiano Santi and... oh, wow... what a pass from Matranga to the Starblaydi middy for the equaliser! This is insanity - the match is now a 4-4 draw in extra-time... well, you might say we're going to penalties after this strike... and I would be inclined to say you're correct if you do think it... my goodness, this is just a battle of epic proportions..."

But by this point manager Lindifeu Zentrescu and captain Massimatto were both yelling intensely (not negatively, but with positivity and passion), rallying the troops for a final charge eleven minutes later that would set the stage for possibly the most historic event in Pacitalian Under-21 Blue Foxes history.

"We're running out of time here, folks... it definitely looks like penalties from any good football fan's perspective - they're just too evenly-matched to suggest any different and the defences of the two squads are really settling down now... nobody's getting through no matter how hard they seem to try, and try again... but here's a chance for the Purple Peril... Matranga tries to move the ball up but she is stuffed by Terasti at the back right... he'll punt the ball forward, curling left for Samatini Telio and he'll bring the ball up the left side... skirts around Mahezihim and Rekeseski there, wow... is Reke way out of position, way too far forward, or is that just me? He's out of play now, Sama has passed up for Andatiforga, who will cross it again for da Scupeta... oh, a curling shot saved by Graikalonii, but the ball is still in play! da Scupeta! No, again saved! For Boranogunta, crossbar and it's back to Andatiforgaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! YES!!!! Michelangelo has painted a masterpiece here tonight! Two goals in extra time and the Junior Blue Foxes have the lead! They've done it in style! Five! Four! It's as good as done, ladies and gentlemen, you have seen history made in style by two talented sides and the Nymphs await!"

With the victory sealed, Pacitalia moves onto the semifinals to once again face the Myrtannians in an AO football competition. At the AOCAF level the senior Blue Foxes are 3-0-0 against the Dryads, but of course, these are two very different teams with different levels of experience and different talents, so expect a totally different outcome (but not necessarily a loss either way) - perhaps another extra-time match is in the works here. Host Myrtannia remains undefeated having beaten Milchama 4-2 in the final quarters match of AO's U21 Football Cup 1. Meanwhile, Demot downed SUNA 5-3 and the Bazacubs disposed of a united V&T squad 2-0.

From Halosen, Myrtannia:
Starblaydia 3 (4) : 3 (5) Pacitalia

STB: Matranga 26', 46' / Nuno Volaré 71' / dos Santos 105'
PAC: Massimatto 14' / Boranogunta 51' / da Scupeta 88' / Andatiforga 97', 116'

3 out of 4

While we defend all our predictions and say that there was very little bias in what we were doing. Of course we did forget one thing, our U21s suck in outrounds and still have a record of 1-4 in them. The one win coming in our last NS U21 World Cup. We also forgot the fact that we suck in AO tournaments as we tend not to care as much and our play suffers as a result. The kids though did good and should be proud of how they performed. However the next U21 World Cup we need a better performance. Anywhoo time to score how we did on our predictions. The scoring goes like this 1 point for correct pick, 3 points for correct scoreline, 1 point for correct amount of goals for either team, 1 point for correct margin of victory. This creates a total of 7 possible points per game.

Vilita & Turori 0 - 2 Bazalonia- Our prediction: V&T 1-3 Bazalonia. 1 point correct for the winner and 1 point for the correct margin of victory. 2 points.

Not a great start but hey we got the winner right.

Demot 5 - 3 Neu Amerika- Our prediction: Demot 2-0 Neu Amerika. 1 point again correct for correct margin of victory and for saying that Demot would advance. However the scoreline was way off the offenses definitely out performed expectations. Again 2 points.

Not looking good. However maybe we will be correct soon.

Starblaydia 3 - 3 Pacitalia (4-5 AET)- Our prediction: Starblaydia 1-1 Pacitalia (1-2 AET). 1 extra point for being correct about AET. 1 point for predicting the victor and one point for margin of victory. That's 3 points for a total of 7 points.

Well that wasn't good espiecially because the next game up is the one we got wrong.

Myrtannia 4 - 2 Milchama- Our Prediction: Myrtannia 3-3 Milchama (4-4 AET) 5-6 PKs. Wow how wrong could we be off. Not only could we not get one of the scores right, we foolishly predicted that our boys could win, then to top that off the game wasn't even close. 0 points.

So out of a total of 28, we got 7. That's just terrible. Now for review we are again posting our semis predictions:

Insert Myrtannia for Milchama where applicable.

The team left the field with jubilation, they initially had underestimated their opponent but had managed to still stop them scoring the 23rd minute save by Joshua Kanga was Awesome. At this point the steam stepped up and continually dominated the possesstion of the ball with impressive 70%. However the only goals where scored in the 34th and in 92nd minutes.

The 34th was pretty much a standard play, good tactics and solid technical skills oppened up an oppurtunity for Midfielder and brother of the Captain, Thomas Yunn, to successfully penetrate the Eel Cat Things Defense and get a shot, on angle between the ECT Keeper and the post of the goal.

In celebration of the win Thomas managed to do a running backflip using the goalposts as a springboard. Unfortunately he was not able to do it without landing flat on his backside, while he was in temporarily in a lot of pain it was found out it was only temporary and no damage had been done, appart for some damage to his pride of course.

The second goal in the 92nd minute was much more controversial as in the dying seconds of the match, as the referee was blowing his whistle a V&T player was given a yellow card for an illegal challenge. There was some confusion before anyone knew what was going to happen and after some confusion by the referee as well. Finally settled down and awarded the penalty. The Eel Cat Things where up in arms over the decision becuase it was too late to score anyway. The Bazacubs where up in arms over the delay and the confusion. The match almost turned into an all out riot. However somehow the referee managed to calm the situation down and the Penalty Kick was held. The Ball was kicked and the goalie choose to dive the wrong way. The Ball went through into the back of the net and the game was over.

The Bazacubs will now face the Team from Demot, the Demot Dynamo. The Dynamo where respected by te Bazacus and after the match in press conference the coach had said. "Demot has reached the Semi-finals, and that is nothing to scoff at. The team will be one of the greatest challenges, apart from Myrtannia of course, that we faced in the tournament. I think we are better but it still could be anybodies game, this is going to be a close game and while I think the Bazacubs has an advantage over the Dynamo the result of this match is by no means certain. I look forward to the match and to see the Bazacubs win as well."

Demot who drew against Bettia in their group stage and Bazalonia who lost against Mrytannia, the hosts of the tournament. While these have been the only non-wins for both of the teams the stats would seem to be in Demot's favour however neither team has ever faced each other so whether it'
s the Dynamo or the Bazacubs one thing we know. This is probably going to bew the most watched match in the AO U21, well, until the finals anyway.

RP Cutoff For Semi-Finals

Pacitalia Outfoxed! Myrtannia in Cup Final!

MARI CITY - It's one of the best rivlaries in AO football, bar none: Pacitalia and Myrtannia. Three meetings in AOCAF have all gone in the Foxes' favor, making it a rather one-sided rivalry so far. But the two nations' respective U21s had never battled on the pitch, making this a very interesting match to watch. The hopes of a nation have been on the shoulders of 22 teenage girls, who had won every match so far going into the dreaded semi-finals. The Curse might still be alive, some thought, but Myrtannia was ready to finally shake it off in football.

The atmosphere was electric as a capacity crowd filled Mari City Park for the Nymphs' only appearance on Scandon Island all tournament long. Most of those fans were, as could be expected, in Orange and Blue. But there was a goodly sized Pacitalian contingent as well. In the stands for Myrtannia were most of the starters from the Dryads senior team, as well as their coach Rachell Gabino. To add to the regalia, the Dryads Army band performed an exceptionally rousing rendition of the national anthem, which energized the fans and players even more.

When the action began, it was a typical Myrtannia-Pacitalia match, full of hard play on the part of both sides. Whenever these two nations clash on the pitch, it's always a reason to tune in. If the Blue Foxes were fatigued from their extra-time win over Starblaydia, they didn't show it early on. In fact, the first half belonged to Pacitalia.

Just ten minutes in, the Foxes found an opening, and forward Massimato took a shot that caught Gerda Kingdon off guard. All of a sudden, it was the Foxes up 1-0 against the host nation, and some in the stands were already shaking their heads. Was this going to be the same song and dance again? Another event in the first half seemed to suggest it would be.

The two nations played a positioning war for most of the half, but when injury time came around, the Foxes pulled off another big play. This time, they cut through the overextended Myrtannia defense led by da Scupeta, and struck one past Kingdon into the top left corner. More shaking of the head accompanied the now 2-0 Pacitalian lead, which was the halftime scoreline.

"We're not executing out there. We need to focus and get on the attack against these Foxes if we want to play in Halosen again," coach Ljungquist growled before heading into the lockers.

Myrtannia knew it had to play harder if it wanted to advance, and in the second half, the Nymphs did what the Dryads couldn't. They scored goals in a pressure sitaution against Pacitalia. After playing more position football for twenty minutes, the Nymphs pushed the Foxes back and brought all their guns to bear. Five forwards up front, and so the passing began in the Pacitalian back third. Leckington passed it to Khulmey, who passed it up to Nidia War. Nidia spotted Hettie Miyagishima, and crossed it to the HHS-attending forward.

Miyagishima headed it at just the right moment, sending the ball into the net and cutting the Pacitalian lead in half. Rather than celebrate, Miyagishima (wearing an odd pink knitted cap she recieved from the Az-Cz team's parents) just nodded and returned to the Myrtannian side of the pitch. The lead was diminished but not gone, and time was the Nymphs' enemy now. Myrtannia had to score again if victory was even possible. Would the boogeymen (or boogey foxes?) end the dream again?

Not just yet. The Nymphs pressed the attack repeatedly, nearly scoring several times, but each time the Pacitalian keeper kept it out. Finally, in the final minute of regulation, something miracuolous happened - the Nymphs found a wide-open shot. Maybe the Foxes were tiring after all. Whatever the case, Miyagishima found Zora Leckington with only the keeper between her and the goal. Leckington faked to the left, then shot it into the right corner, equalising and setting up another extra-time showdown. After a little celebrating, the Nymphs kept the pace up for the final minutes of regulation, and entered extra time.

In extra time, Myrtannia pressed the attack one more time, and the Foxes finally showed their fatigue. Playing two straight hard-fought extra time matches had taken their toll on the young Foxes just as it had on the Dryads in AOCAF XVI's knockouts. The five-forward attack took an additional toll against the Foxes, and forced an uncharacteristic error. Miyagishima cut right past two defenders, who tripped over one another. The odd play gave Hettie the shot, and she was more than willing to take it. The call from AIR 4:

"Miyagishima, clad in that pink hat, drives forward... the Foxes come to meet her and... oooo! They collide or something, and they're down! Hettie has a clear line to the goal... she strikes..... GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!! GOAL! Hettie Miyagishima has given Myrtannia a 3-2 lead in Extra Time! All the way back from the grave, so to speak! God bless that stupid hat!"

After that, the team mobbed Miyagishima, who still refused to remove the hat. For the rest of Extra Time, the Nymphs fell back to play conservative defense, which held the Foxes at bay long enough for the scoreline to remain intact at the final whistle. When that whislte sounded, pandemonium broke out. The entire Nymphs team stormed the field, mobbing Miyagishima and Leckington, who had led them on an unlikely comeback from 0-2 down at the half. The fans were going crazy, rocking the stadium and exchanging hugs along with tears of joy amongst their number.

In a display of sportsmanship, the Nymphs shook hands with their Pacitalian comrades, and congratulated them on a great match. But tonight was Myrtannia's night. For the first time in history, a Myrtannian side defeated a Pacitalian side in international football. For the first time ever, Myrtannia will play in a football cup final on the international level.

"We still can't quite believe it," said Miyagishima, the Nymph of the Match, "We went down early, but we kept on attacking, and got the job done. To win like this... at home, too, is amazing. We're playing for the title! Thanks to the lucky hat, maybe!"

Miyagishima, her lucky hat, and the Nymphs will face the Dynamo of Demot, who continued their unlikely run with a huge 1-0 win over Bazalonia in the other semi-final match. Demot has played exceptionally well, and should be a tough opponent. Myrtannia has the home field advantage, and momentum of finally defeating a longtime rival to boot. Plus, they'll be playing at Halosen National Stadium, in the nation's capital. Are the football gods finally smiling on Myrtannia?

We'll find out soon enough.

The final from Mari City Park:

Myrtannia 2 - 2 Pacitalia (3-2 AET)
(Miyagishima 65' & 100', Leckington 89') (Massimato 10', da Scupeta 45')

The team was dissappointed they performed well but not well enough, The team from Demot pulled an amazing shot at goal in the first ten minutes of the match. Mo one was quite sure how they could of stopped it and they small the ball fly from the head of Jason Alexander, the 18 year old Demot forward.

It seemed to make ir's own path through the defense of the Bazacubs and into the back of the net. There was nothing that the team could have done and Demot took the lead.

From that point on neither team could show the brilliance of performance that got them to the Semi-finals over the 12 other non-semi finalists. Both sides had opportunities, a particular Bazalonian one hit the crossbar in a way that it was just a fluke that it did not bounce down onto the ground behind the line but they weren't that lucky.

After the match the team was totally sure that the coach would ripp them a new orifice for playing mediocre. However the coach was surprisingly ... normal. He asked them about their performance and how they think they went. And then calmly stated that they would face the Pacitalian Blue Foxes in the 3rd Place Play Off. The training schedule they had was actually what could be considered normal for the match. They they where worked hard, they where not sure what had happened to the coach. Maybe he had a psychotic break or something major happened in his life.

Either way the coach was irritatingly easy to work with and the relationship that the team had with the coach, was totally up in the air would this cause failure or would the extra freedom lead to the Bazacubs winning the match against the Blue Foxes?
No one knows and we'll just have to wait till the game to find out.

Demot Daily ~ Thrill of the Hunt

In one of the most anticipated games in the tournament thus far, the Dynamo were able to squeak by the Bazacubs on the strenth of their backline and safe hands of Orien. It was a highly contested affair with each team getting their share of oppurtunities, but neither could exucute the finish that they had in rounds before and show off their talented strikers. This is highly dissapointed, espicially for the Dynamo who love attacking football, for they think defensive football is dull and ruins the quality of the beautiful game.

However the lone tally was that worthy of legend, coming off a near perfect cross from Ginger Trien, when she came down the sideline, and recieved a neat through ball from Fae. She worked the ball down into the corner and delivered the cross into the box. And there was Alexander at the near post, rising high above everyone else and meeting it square with his forehead and directing beautifuly down into the corner where Kanga had little chance getting to it. The play will likely go down in Dynamo lore as the goal that defined s team, and maybe even a championship, but we'll have more on that later.

The game continued on and it looked as if there would be at least two more goals, but the framework of the respected keepers kept those shots from disturbing the tranquility of the net. Thus the game eventually got bogged down in the midfield, and the Dynamo survived the bout unscathed, with Orien netting a clean sheet.

Now the team will move onto the final where they will face the host nations squad, the Nyphs of Myrtannia. Statistically speaking, the team are just about as even as could be. Myrtannia has thirteen goals for and six goals against while Demot has twelve goals for and six goals against. However the Dyanmo's oppisition will likely be the favorite and have the advantage, playing in front of their fans in their country. When asked about his oppisition, coach Desiance has this to say.

"Well they are obviously a high quality oppenent, having taken down powerhouses on their way to this final. And coming off such an emotional victory over their old rivals, and to top it all off, they are in front of their fans so that will obviously have them hyped up and ready for the game. But our squad is just as ready. It is going to be another close game where a silly mistake by one player will likely detirmine the final scoreline. This is the championship, and you don't get to one on talent and emotion alone, you need teamwork and unity which I think our squad has. Hopefully we can translate that into an upset and bring the cup back home to Demot. "

Predictions

Third Place Playoff (Skalatur International Field in Skalatur):
Bazalonia (3-0-2) v. Pacitalia (3-0-2)

We had them picked to be in the final, so logically that means we should pick them to win the 3pp. The Bazacubs will give the foxes some trouble, but not enough to pull it out. 3-1

AO U21 Football Cup Final (Halosen National Stadium in Halosen):
Demot (4-1-0) v. Myrtannia (5-0-0)

We would love to say that the Dynamo pull the upset and win thier first championship ever, but with soo many elements going against our squad, we just have to pick the hosts here. 3-2

Pups will have to settle for third once again
U21 squad "unhappy" with extra-time defeat but say they are taking the 3PPO seriously

HALOSEN, MYRTANNIA (PSN)
-- Pacitalia exited the chase for the first AO U21 football cup Wednesday evening, losing a thrilling match in extra-time to the Nymphs that only extended the friendliness and warmth of the rivalry but left Pacitalians wondering when, if ever, their chance at hoisting any trophy, will come.

Now, the Junior Foxes, who were one of the favourites going into the tournament and played like they were expected to throughout, once again fell victim to the curse that seems to prevent Pacitalian teams from winning championships, regardless of the sport. The only finals appearance a Pacitalian squad has ever made is in the Cherry Cup 18 final match, where Starblaydia defeated the Ice Foxes, 4-2.

Here's an example of how the curse has worked.
  • No AOCAF championships in five appearances (one third-place finish)
  • No U21 World Cup championships in twelve appearances (two third-place finishes)
  • No Cherry Cup wins in two appearances (one runner-up finish)
  • No gold medals in Olympic competition (but plenty of silver and bronze)
  • No AO Bowl championships in two appearances
  • No PFI championships in one appearance (one runner-up finish)
  • No WBC championships in four appearances
  • No Super Six championships in six appearances
Despite this lack of accomplishment, the Pacitalian squads are always regarded among the best in the world. Thus, it's easy to understand why there is so much frustration among Foxes fans.

"The talent is there," said one fan. "We just don't seem to get past this imaginary forcefield that holds our guys back when they are doing well. Just look at AOCAF16 - the Blue Foxes were stoning the competition and then all of a sudden got to the semifinals and lost twice in a row to finish fourth. They were both extra-time defeats, but still, the curse is there. I believe in it."

So, now the Pacitalian U21 team will have to settle for its third third-place finish. The Boys of Bronze, as they are affectionately called in the media. Though local papers are having their own field days, with sports opinion pages filled with criticism of Lindifeu Zentrescu, who is rumoured to be stepping down from both the senior and junior squads at the end of this cup.

Bertrando Massimatto opened the scoring for the Pacitalians in the 10th, and Massimo da Scupeta doubled the lead going into halftime, but the Myrtannians completed a stunning comeback on two Miyagishima goals to win their first ever match against a Pacitalian side en route to the final against Demot. Perhaps the Junior Foxes were too concerned about exacting revenge on the Demot squad in the final that they slipped on the proverbial semifinals banana peel?

"Not at all," said manager Zentrescu. "We take our matches with any Myrtannian squad very seriously. They're an excellent challenge to our team, and fun to play. We look forward to matches against them at any level because we know the results will be very exciting."

Pressed on whether he would protest the cup's organisers on allowing Nymph forward Miyagishima to wear a hat during the match, Zentrescu said no. "I don't think a hat made the difference. She's a talented player." Miyagishima scored two of three goals in the victory.

Nonetheless, the Pacitalians now face the Bazacubs in the third-place playoff. All eyes are on Pacitalia to win, but we don't really know what might happen. Hopefully they don't crash out. At the very least, the Pups can be pleased that a Myrtannian team reciprocated the hand-shaking that took place after Pacitalia eliminated Myrtannia in the quarterfinals of AOCAF16.

From Halosen, Myrtannia:
Myrtannia 2 (3) : 2 (2) Pacitalia

MYR: Miyagishima 65', 100' / Leckington 89'
PAC: Massimatto 10' / da Scupeta 45+1'

NEXT UP: MYR v DMT (F), BAZ v PAC (3PPO)

Unlikely Nymphs Lift Cup in Halosen; Nation Celebrates First Cup Win

HALOSEN - The long, arduous journey of the Mrytannia Nymphs was destined to come to a conclusion tonight, whether victory or defeat was the result of the match. At Halosen National Stadium, the first AO U21 Football Cup champion would finally be crowned, and the entire nation was sitting on the edge of their seats. Myrtannia has a long, somewhat humiliating tradition of losing the big matches in football tournaments. Demot was undefeated coming into the match as well, and were just as unlikely to reach the Final as Myrtannia. Maybe more unlikely, even, given Demot's Group Stage competition.

Still, the atmosphere was even tenser than the Semi-Finals, where Myrtannia ultimately edged out the talented Foxes of Pacitalia in Extra Time. In the nation's capital, the largest stadium in Myrtannia was packed once again. The sea of Orange and Blue almost seemed larger than it had been in the Group Stage for the Nymphs. A nation that has seen its president ousted by Congress in recent days, with war erupting all around it, had come together to support their national team. Or their Under-21 national team at least.

The Nymphs looked very focused during the national anthems presentations, and this may have been the stress of dealing with high expectations from a home crowd. As Pacitalian media stated before the tournament, the Nymphs have had to deal with the push to win something and have it mean something as well. Against Demot, this would prove to be a challenge.

For the first 45 minutes, both the Dynamo and the Nymphs battled for position on the pitch. Neither conceded much, and two of the best offensive sides in the tournament found themselves playing excellent defense. Demot would stop a Myrtannian attack, and vice versa, causing the cliche term seesaw battle to come to mind. When the sides went into the lockers at the half, it was all even at 0-0.

"Demot's a great team, and we're going to have to find a way to squeeze in a score somehow. Otherwise, this thing's going to ET, maybe PKs," coach Ljungquist told the media breifly before heading into the locker room.

Once both sides returned to the pitch, it was more of the same - back and forth battling as both sides attempted to get an opening. For another 30 minutes, neither side was able to get a good shot, though several were taken by both sides. As the match entered its final ten minutes, something had to be done. The Nymphs were starting to show fatigue after their extra-time win over Pacitalia, where the Demotians had won in regulation over Bazalonia.

Then, out of the blue (and orange, maybe?), the prayers of the Myrtannian football fans were answered. The Nymphs made one last big push against the Dynamo, and got what they had been hunting for. All five forwards up front again, and the Nymphs got through the tough Demot defense at last. Leckington scooted past one defender, and passed it to Khulmey. Khulmey had an extra defender come up to try and stop her, so she passed it between their legs to the star striker of Myrtannia's Next Generation.

Clad in the inexplicable pink knitted cap again, Hettie Miyagishima found only the keeper between her and the goal. Miyagishima took the shot, which was deflected at first, but she landed a second diving kick to force it back in. As soon as it did, the capacity crowd let out a thunderous roar of celebration and relief. Here's the AIR 4 call:

"And Khulmey finds Hettie, who's open for the shot... Miyagishima fires... blocked by the Demotian! Wait, Hettie dives, strikes... GOOOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!! GOAL! Myrtannia has taken a 1-0 lead over Demot in the Cup Final! Can you believe it? If they can hold up the defensive stand just five minutes more, they are champions! I've said it before and I'll say it again: God bless that stupid hat!"

After being mobbed by her Nymphs teammates, Hettie led them to the Myrtannia half of the pitch one last time. Demot took possession, but the Myrtannia defense held them back for the final minutes, holding the lead until the final whistle. When that whistle sounded, all of the Nymphs stormed the field in celebration, as the fans roared even louder. Miyagishima was seen embracing teammates with tears in her eyes, and 'Stand Strong, United Isles' was played out of the stadium's PA system.

For the first time in history, a Myrtannian team won a football cup, and the triumph was made all the sweeter by doing so at home. All across the United Isles, citizens celebrated feverishly in sports bars, at home, and in the streets. All the futility of previous football tournaments' failures were cast aside for a moment as the Nymphs lifted the Cup in the nation's capital.

"I can't believe it... we won! The Cup stays in Myrtannia for now, and we won!!" Miyagishima exclaimed as she held the Cup in her hands.

Until the next U21 Cup, Myrtannia is the champion, which is hard to believe in some ways. They were stuck in a group with Bazalonia and Lamoni, and went unbeaten. Then, they toppled Milchama, edged Pacitalia for the first time, and now slipped past Demot to win it all. Most surprisng of all was Hettie Miyagishima, who scored an amazing 8 times during the competition, including 4 in the last two matches. She will certainly be a member of the next Dryads AOCAF team.

For now, we leave you with the most fitting song of the moment: "We are the champions!"

The final of the Final from Halosen National Stadium:

Myrtannia 1 - 0 Demot

(Miyagishima 85') (none)

FdFP cuts Zentrescu in nasty divorce
Rather unpleasant parting of ways follows another just-short finish in football competition

TIMIOCATO (PSN)
-- It turns out Lindifeu Zentrescu's guidance of the Junior Foxes to third place in the inaugural AO Under-21 Football Cup was his swan song as coach of the national squads.

Zentrescu, who managed the Junior Blue Foxes from Under-21 World Cup 10, and the senior men's side from AOCAF12, was fired Tuesday as manager of both squads by the Federazione di Futaboli Pacitaliana, with the governing body of football in the Democratic Capitalist Republic citing "a particularly unbecoming response to our concerns."

"[Mr Zentrescu] was hostile in his response to our uncertainty that he could lead either the junior or senior squads to a championship in their respective grids," FdFP president Ramón Mina said Tuesday in a statement released to the press. "He burnt quite a few bridges with his comments, and in doing so, insulted a fair amount of people that have put their heart and soul into this organisation, and thus, into the sport itself. The Federation was then forced to make a decision, and that was to let Mr Zentrescu go."

Mina added in a subsequent phone conversation with PSN staff that he was "shocked" that a man as respectable as Zentrescu said what he had.

"I was shaking with frustration and offence," he said, saying that Zentrescu explicitly mentioned and blamed him for his dissatisfaction as manager. "I've never been spoken of like that, in such a disrespectful way. It was truly unbecoming."

The scrappy Romano-Pacitalian, well-known for his constant preference of attacking football, helped the Junior Blue Foxes to three third-place finishes during his tenure, in U21WC19, U21WC20, and, as mentioned the inaugural under-21 football championship in the Atlantian Oceanian region. He also led the Senior Foxes to third in AOCAF14 and fourth in AOCAF16, and their degree of success under his watch helped them into fourth in the regional football rankings, nearly on par with powerhouses Starblaydia, Bettia and Nedalia, turning the Blue Foxes into perennial contenders in the process.

However, it is obvious the FdFP is unsatisfied with consistent third-place finishes and wanted someone capable of taking either the Junior or Senior squad, or both, all the way. Word is that the FdFP is considering splitting up the job of managing the teams such as it was before Zentrescu took over in 2004, meaning he will be replaced by a new manager of the U21 squad and a new manager of the senior squad.

He did not release a statement on either the teams' recent performances or his termination as manager, and has been oddly quiet since the semifinals loss to Myrtannia in the AO Under-21 Championship, leading some to speculate he was ready to step aside. However, no one predicted his tenure would end so nastily. And no one within the FdFP is ready to tell the public what exactly Zentrescu said that was so bad.

"We're now headed in a new direction," Mina finished by saying. "Hopefully that direction leads us to a championship on one or, better yet, both levels of play."
