The Group of Death!
Bluebirds In a Whole Heap of Trouble

Three World Cups, Three Cups of Harmony, Two Baptism of Fire Cups and an AOCAF Trophy. That's what the members of Group 4 in the 9th AOCAF hold between them, never mind Under-21 Championships and Regional and Nationstates' club competitions.
  • Vilita: World Cup, AOCAF, Cup of Harmony
  • Sarzona: World Cup, Cup of Harmony, Baptism of Fire
  • Bedistan: World Cup
  • Nova Britannicus: Cup of Harmony
  • Spruitland: Baptism of Fire
"That's a whole lot of silverware," Bluebirds manager http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/David_Bentley said today, "we were ecstatic when we won the Cup of Harmony, but getting out of this Group will be a very hard task indeed."

Due to the strangeness of the Streetian hosts (must be the Dwarven influence), nations such as Nedalia - who are ranked far lower in the official AO rankings than Nova Britannicus - were seeded in a higher class of Pot than the Bluebirds, something which Bentley obviously wasn't happy about.

"That's just typical, really," he said with a sigh, "we don't claim to be the best in the world, but we're certainly better than Nedalia. That's not to diminish their acheivements last time, of course, but I've seen the calibre of players from both nations and we have the superior quality. This is just something we'll have to deal with and get over, though. We're going to have a harder tournament than lesser teams because of this system. That'll make it much better, however, if and when we pick up points in the group stage."

And as for the Bluebird squad itself:

"I'll tell you that once the bus arrives, we'll see who's on it."

Lamoni prepares for AOCAF

With AOCAF IX well on the way to starting; and the Lamonian roster already made public, the Hawks are in a relatively 'good' (we dislike to say 'easy') group, with the main threat expected to come from regional champs Starblaydia. The Hawks will be looking to do a better job in this AOCAF than they did in the last one. The Hawks should make it to the knockouts in this group, but time will tell.

Predictions:

Nedalia This one should be a good match for the Hawks. A loss would suprise us.

Chacor The only other team in the group (besides Starblaydia) that might win against the Hawks, it would be bad for Lamoni to take them lying down.

Starblaydia This is the team that most worries the Hawks. Lamoni hasn't won a match against them yet, but hopes that that will change.

Bettia This is another match where we would be suprised to see the Hawks lose.

We've Only Won It Three Times
Starblaydia "Gonna Win it Four times!"

Starblaydia's AOCAF 8 Schedule gives them a Bye match on the first Matchday - again - giving the psychological edge to teams like Lamoni who will get to look down on Starblaydia after the first few matchdays through more games played and more points won - probably.

CODE
MD Team
1. -
2. Bettia
3. Chacor
4. Lamoni
5. Nedalia

The only brand-new team to Starblaydia in this group is Bettia, though they should really pose no threat. Likewise Chacor and overacheivers Nedalia. In fact, even Lamoni should be put firmly in their place by this awesome-looking Starblaydi side, full of veteran experience like Darius Belizaire and youthful vigour like Giovanni Lopez.

Starblaydia have a number of AOCAF7 and AOCAF8 winners, including Nelson de Montford, the twenty-eight year old with just twelve senior caps - all won in the AOCAF - and two AOCAF winners' medals. That's some record of medals-to-caps, and he'll be hoping to win another seven caps and another AOCAF winner's medal.

Tough Draw For Hypocria

Hypocria is making its debut in the AOCAF and the Hyppos have been rewarded with a very tough draw in Group 1. Yes the group comes complete with the hosts, a former world champion, a side looking to exit the international stage in style and a team we know nothing about but who are probably better than us anyway. So who exactly are the opposition?

Crystilakere

At World XIX the Crystils took their place as the best team in the world but they haven’t managed to repeat their success in the AOCAF. Not much has been heard from Crystilakere ahead of the tournament but they have made one thing very clear, they want to go home with the trophy. Hypocria recently beat Crystilakere 4 – 0 in the U21 World Cup. Is it a sign? Probably not.

Cockbill Street

The host nation will be guaranteed a lot of support in their own backyard. They may need all the advantages they can get as according to the regional rankings Cockbill Street are only the third best team in the group. Will playing at home level the field?

Turori

Turori are a consistently good side and are no strangers to the later stages of international competitions. Rumours are circulating that the nation is soon to blow the final whistle on its participation in international competitions and lifting the AOCAF trophy would certainly be a fitting swansong.

Pedriana

Something of a mystery to Hypocrian fans. The country is roughly one third of the size of Hypocria but is home to several billion inhabitants. From this we can assume that they are either very thin or the buildings are very tall. Apparently Pedriana is a nation that does not have a particularly good record in this competition so they are perhaps the Hyppo’s best chance of points.

AOCAF IX – ouch?

Spruitland’s first entry in the Atlantian Oceania Cup of Association Football, in its ninth edition, might turn out to be a painful experience. The Wabbits – for the occasion nicknamed the ‘Wegional Wabbits’ – have been placed in the so-called Group of Death, alongside Vilita, Sarzonia, Bedistan and Nova Britannicus.

Well, “alongside” might be putting it a tad too strongly – let’s just say it like it is: Spruitland has been put below those teams. Every team in Group D has won at least one tournament, and Spruitland is no exception, but let’s face it, our Baptism of Fire isn’t gonna impress those World Cup winners much.

Spruitland is clearly the extra team in the group, provided for the others’ entertainment, to give them an easy three points and a chance to jack up their goal difference. The order of the day for the Wabbits will be to limit the damage, and hope for the best.

Spruitland coach Cor Bensen has chosen his squad with one main objective in mind: to give some of the up-and-comers a chance to prove themselves. With the main squad scheduled to start in the Cup of Harmony soon, many subs, reserves and young talents get to use the AOCAF to gain experience – humbling experience, likely, but experience nonetheless.

Striker Ben Thorsen, aged 30, is the oldest and most-capped player on the team – even though only one of his nine caps was a start – and he will have the questionable honor of wearing the captain’s armband for this tournament. Most of the rest of the team is in their early twenties, with many ex- and even a few current Under-21 internationals.

Cor Bensen will remain in Cockbill Street to coach the team for as long as possible, until the start of the Cup of Harmony, after which SFA President Martin Backer will take over, under Cor’s guidelines. But chances are that Spruitland’s participation in AOCAF IX will already be over by the time the CoH starts. Let’s hope it won’t be too humiliating.

"Welcome once again to international football here on the Sonastra Sports Network as we look ahead to the ninth AOCAF. Joining me in the studio is, as always, Stuart Abdul-Rahim, assistant manager of Gabalfa Rovers. Stuart... looking forward to the new season?"

"Yes, definately. This is going to be one hell of a challenge, but I feel confident in my coaching abilities and, well, let's see what happens. Maybe one day, I'll be coaching the Aroras."

"Looking forward to that. Now then what do we make of Bettia's group? First up is Chacor, the only team to be ranked lower than Bettia in this group."

"On paper, this is the game we are most likely to win. ON PAPER. I can't emphasise that enough. Rankings aren't the be-all and end-all of football tournaments, and you can rest assured Chacor will be feeling the same way about us. This'll be a tight game."

"Next up is the number one team in the tournament, Starblaydia. What do you make of them?"

"Well, they've won this three times already. perhaps they'll be kind and lets us have a chance! Seriously though, I don't see that happening. The only plus point here is that we'll be playing this match in Vimesbairn, which as you know is the city where our left wing-back Geraint Carew plays his club football. Maybe if the locals are on his side, it might lift the team a bit. This will be the first time we've met them in regional competition, although we did play them in the qualifying round of WC22. One draw, one defeat if I remember rightly."

"And speaking of wing-backs, what do you make of the squad?"

"Well, it's a mixture of new caps and experience, and it's good to see such a statement of attacking intent. Our boys haven't come here to play defensively. The regulars who aren't in the squad have been rested for the Cup of Harmony - if we get in that is. It's good to see Tiddles has made the short trip over as well."

"Yes, in fact we have footage of her arriving with the rest of the squad on their specially chartered zeppelin from the newly-built Grappenhall Zeppodrome, which they'll be using to get from stadium to stadium. I wonder if the other teams have remebered there are no roads in Cockbill Street? Anyway, next up for Bettia will be Nedalia. Stuart, what do you think?"

"To be honest, I have a bad feeling about this one. Nedalia haven't beaten us in our three meetings so far, but this game could be their best opportunity to redress the balance."

"And lastly, we'll be playing Lamoni at a cricket ground. They like their cricket here in Cockbill Street, and hopefully Bettia will soon follow suit. What do you make of Lamoni?"

"They're certainly a good team, and it seems they've come here with bags of confidence. If we can get any kind of result from that game, I'll be very happy."

"Thank you for those thought Stuart. And now we return to Gethin and Razir in our Gabalfa studios - as the Apex League gears up for a new season, they'll be sharing their wisdom with you, the folks at home. From us in Jotneheim, goodnight."

Rams win opener of AOCAF over Krytenia 3-1

In a good form for the AOCAF, the Rams, the newly renamed regional squad, defeated the Krytenian entries 3-1 in the first match. Bennie Sharp scored the first and the last goal for the Rams, with Laura Boyd getting one in during the second half of the match.

[ooc]more to come in a bit, something else is happening. no time[/ooc]

Hawks draw with Nedalia, share 1st

In a relatively 'odd' match, this was a high scoring match for both sides. It was said that the Hawks will be focusing their main effort against Starblaydia; and it appears to be true. The Hawks do not seem to be bothered by Nedalia, Chacor, and Bettia; and well they shouldn't. They shouldn't get overconfident, but the Lamonian squad isn't bad themselves. Having made the knockouts in all but one AOCAF appearance speaks for itself. The Lamonians with the most goal-scoring sucess in the AO Champs League let themselves be heard from again in this match, with Christian Silk, Ted Kubik, and Allan Tippie all scoring a goal. All in all, this isn't such a bad result from a first AOCAF match. The Hawks will be facing Chacor next.

Lamoni - 3 Allan Tippie (5), Christian Silk (20), Ted Kubik (35)

Nedalia - 3 (10, 40, 45)

Posted by: Nedalia Jul 14 2005, 06:40 PM
The Lions have come into the AOCAF Cup playing their flamboyant, attacking football, but unfortunately against Lamoni, they also forgot how a little bit of defensive adequacy could win a match for you. For every goal Lamoni scored, the Nedalians came back just a short while later and equalized, but had they stopped just one of those goals, it wouldve been the Lions beaming in all their glory, with 3 points in the bag.

That wasnt the case however, as manager Randy Gamman, stated: "It takes more than just the ability to score goals. We have to defend SOMETHING. We cant just sit back and watch the goals scorch by us. This is no fault of Derrell Lynch, our goalkeeper, who played fabulous, but it is the fault of the defensive line. Mohammed Khadra and Cole Zenith have to get their communication going, or we're going to pay big."

The 3 goals the Lions scored came through Mattan, Jamhurra, and Constantine, with the latter riding high from his fabulous performances for the U21 team in U21 WC 17. It was his first start, and his ability to play with Marine Coast United international Nene was a huge plus for the manager.

Winning Start

When people around the region open their morning newspapers they may have a glance at the AOCAF results. If they do they will see the name of Hypocria right at the top of the list. Admittedly part of that is thanks to the alphabet, being in Group A and all, but mostly it’s due to the Hyppos winning on their AOCAF debut.

Hypocria versus Pedriana was clearly not considered one of the glamour games by the host nation and hence the match was played on what is essentially a hundred year old field. The Hypocrian players clearly didn’t mind too much and they produced a confident performance to defeat their much more established opponents.

Hypocrium City striker Andrei Shirko scored his tenth international goal, midway through the first half, to give Hypocria the lead after some good play from Baxter in the centre. In the second half Partizan Drissa forward Ashley Marshall marked his international debut with a great goal after he cut inside from the right and curled a left footed shot past the keeper and into the back of the net. At the other end Ricardo Kindelan was in fine form and kept the Pedriana attack at bay to help the Hypocria to a 2 – 0 win.

Hypocria 2 – 0 Pedriana
Shirko
Marshall

The result means Hypocria top Group A at this very early stage, level on points with Turori after the Eels edged past the hosts 1 – 0 in the other group game. The Hyppos stay at the Roegrow Grass Patch for their second match, a top of the table encounter with Turori. The surroundings will be the same and hopefully the result will also be something similar.

Aroras Kick-Off With A Draw

Bettia 1 (Hutton 6)
Chacor 1 (Meneses 35)

Bettia kept up their proud tradition of never winning their opening matches by drawing a tight game with Chacor.

The Aroras got off to the perfect start when Chris Hutton put them in front after just six minutes, neatly sidestepping past Brandon Cater before firing home from just inside the penalty area.

Young starlet Latif Hunter almost doubled their advantage on the half hour mark after being put through by a long diagonal ball from Evan Brooks. Having caught the Chacor defence napping he found himself one-on-one with Napoli in the Chacor goal, but was forced wide and shot into the side netting.

This near miss stung Chacor into life, and they dragged themselve back on level terms five minute later after the dangerous Albert Allen was fouled twenty yards out. Michael Meneses duly slotted the free-kick home, finding the top corner with his visciously curling set-piece.

Some half-time entertainment came in the form of Tiddles, Bettia's much-loved mascot, attacking Chacorian midfielder Carlos Jasper as the teams came off for team-talk and a cup of tea. Unfortunately for the Bettian fans, Jasper was just too fleet of foot for our beloved Tiddles, and so escaped unscathed.

However, this near-miss affected his game somewhat as he seemed nervous at times (especially when near the Bettian bench) and this led to a number of uncharacteristic mistakes throughout the second half. The numourous Bettian chances were easily dealt with by the Chacor back line, and so the opening match finished honours even.

Bettia now face Starblaydia knowing they need to improve if they are to progress in this tournament.

Opener doesn't go well for Stars

After a wait that seemed interminable, the ninth AOCAF tournament began for the Sarzonian second choice national football team with a matchup against the team that won the 21st World Cup, Bedistan. In the third meeting between those two sides, the Lions finally finished winners, defeating Sarzonia 2-0 to put the Stars at the bottom of the table in the so-called Group of Death.

"With all the talk about this group being a Group of Death, we got caught with our britches down a bit," Coach Bryson Juergens said. "We're not out of contention by any stretch, but we also need to play a bit better football to make it out of this group."

The Stars (0-0-1) called the loss to Bedistan a "team collapse," but the Lions could also be credited for taking the game to the Stars. Goalkeeper Marco Taglianetti made six saves and was pressured constantly throughout the match, but both goals were "soft, soft goals," Juergens said.

"In a way, he shouldn't be blamed," Juergens said. "Defensively, we were horrible. We didn't provide enough support in midfield and our forwards did a poor job of keeping possession. We were lucky the scoreline was only two-nil.

"But those were both goals that Tags should have stopped with a fair bit of ease," Juergens said. "We'll have to regroup for our next match."

The Stars will get a bye date to "stew over the loss," as forward Kevin Wilson put it, but Juergens said he planned for the day to be "constructive."

"We're going to put the lads through their paces," he said. "It's going to be a lot of hard work that's going to get us through if anything does. Nova Brittanicus won the Cup of Harmony, so they're anything but a soft team. The only team we think we can hammer in this group is Spruitland."

Strike Partnership Starts Well
Belizaire and Macia sink Aroras, 2-1

Four senior debuts were handed out to young Starblaydi players in this match, one of whom marked his debut with the goal that finally sank Bettia's hopes of building on their single point won in their first game.

Leopoldo Lopez, Joe Kippenberger, Christian Macia and Giovanni Lopez all took the step-up from from the Under-21s to the full national team, performing well, overall, in this openeing game for Starblaydia. Leopoldo Lopez did well throughout the ninety minutes, his presence boosted by fullback counterpart at club level, Jikiri Fuinbar. Kippenberger performed excellently alongside Captain Martin Watt, though one can say he was most at-fault for Bettia's goal.

Chris Hutton got away from Kippenberger's gaze and when Watt failed to close down Ward fast enough, Hutton ended up with all the space and time he needed to chip delicately over the onrushing Corominas. That was after, of course, Darius Belizaire had slotted home a penalty after Corominas - yes, the goalie - was brought down in the Bettian box by Gareth Coates.

Obviously the Aroras had never played computer football games on the 'Easy' setting, where you can run the goalie 90 yards and score a goal with him. Coates, the non-gamer player that he obviously is, cynically fouled Corominas with a boot to the knee. In ordinary circumstances Corominas would have taken the spot-kick himself, but as he was writhing in agony on the sidelines with Elwood Deangelo warming up, Belizaire slotted the penalty home.

Christian Macia, on his debut, won the game for Starblaydia with around twelve minutes to go as he broke free of the offside trap and rounded the 'keeper. He was taken off shortly after to be replaced by another debutant, Giovanni Lopez. Though G. Lopez made quite an impact, another Starblaydi goal was not forthcoming before the end of the match. Playing Chacor next, Starblaydia will be expecting a four-nil win, so a little bird told us.

Hawks crush Chacor 4-0

In what had to be one of the most one-sided matches in AOCAF history, the Lamoni Hawks crushed Chacor 4-0 in Cockbill Street. During most of the match, Hawk Goalie Jamie Goggins had nothing to do but watch the grass grow; so masterful was Lamoni's performance. Ted Hause, Ted Kubik, Allan Tippie, and Lonnie Petrovich all scored in this mismatch. The Hawks have the next matchday off before facing Starblaydia; and they thought that they might as well watch the Starblaydi game, since there was nothing else to do but practice and laugh at Chacor. Projections call for a first or second place group stage finish for the Hawks; dependent on how the upcoming match with Starblaydia goes. While the Hawks have yet to defeat Starblaydia in AOCAF, that doesn't mean that it can't be done. We shall see in any event, however. Starblaydia might be the top ranked team in the AOCAF, but this match will go to the team that wants it more. It has been reported that Hawk reserve player Max Tinch was the little birdie that told the Starblaydi squad about the Lamonian results vis-a-vis Chacor.

Lamoni - 4 Ted Hause (10), Ted Kubik (30), Allan Tippie (60), Lonnie Petrovich (55)
Chacor - 0

Not in last place yet!

Nova Britannicus – Spruitland: 3-1
Bedistan – Spruitland: 0-0

Not much is expected of Spruitland at AOCAF IX – in fact, nothing is expected of them at all – but so far, the Wegional Wabbits’ performance can be classified under “could be worse”. They managed a loss and a draw so far, and, well, let’s be honest, that’s about as good as anyone could have hoped.

The painful defeat on Matchday 1, by Nova Britannicus, did not start the Wabbits off on the right foot. After the two recent scoreless draws in World Cup 23 Qualifying, this match was their best hope of getting any points in Group 4, but the Nova Brits crushed it like an empty can of Worcestershire sauce.

A posh striker named Arthur Peacock was the nail in Spruitland’s coffin, with two elegant goals in the second half. The half time score was a hopeful 1-1; left winger Harry Fletcher had opened the score for Nova Britannicus, with Jeff Wong scoring his first ever senior goal for Spruitland shortly thereafter.

But the Wabbits bounced back on Matchday 2, against former World Champions Bedistan, in a way that shouldn’t exactly be a surprise: with a scoreless draw. After seven of those in World Cup Qualifying, Spruitland maintains their average of one 0-0 in two during the last sixteen matches, which could be bad news for either Vilita or Sarzonia, the next two opponents.

“Rather not, thank you very much,” coach Cor Bensen replies to that. “Don’t get me wrong, happy with the point and all. But I’d rather not start on another donut streak. After all, there’s no wooden spoon to win in this tournament.”

The point keeps the Wabbits mathematically in the running for a spot in the next round, though nobody’s really holding their breath. However, the group table does look nice, with Spruitland surprisingly not in last place after two matchdays. Under the motto “we’re ahead of the World Champs,” nationwide celebrations erupted, partygoers conveniently overlooking the fact that Sarzonia had a bye on MD2.

The Joy of Six (Points)

Ahead of the opening game players, fans and officials alike were quietly hopeful of picking up at least a point from Pedriana. Against Turori nobody expected anything less than a sound beating. A point would have been considered a major victory, a win wasn’t considered at all. It’s a funny old game isn’t it?

Predictable it was the Eels who had the upper hand for almost the entire first half and duly took the lead after 25 minutes. The Hypocrian players never really got going and it was only thanks to the brilliance of Kindelan that the Turori lead wasn’t more at the break. The players left the pitch at halftime for some inspirational words from their coach. We don’t know what he said but it certainly did the trick.

The players took to the field in the second half looking much more confident and relaxed. They got back into the game after just four minutes of the half. Big striker Wolfgang Dospel firmly headed past the keeper from Marshall’s cross. With twenty minutes left on the clock Andrei Shirko latched onto Burdali’s pass and fired a low shot into the bottom corner, his 11th in 22 games, to give Hypocria the lead.

The fans were clearly loving life at that moment and directed a rousing chorus of “are you Spruitland in disguise?” at their opponents. This seemed to annoy them slightly and they surged forward but again it was Kindelan to the rescue. The last twenty minutes seemed like the longest in football history but Kindelan and his defenders held firm to help record an excellent win.

Hypocria 2 – 1 Turori
Dospel
Shirko

This result means that Hypocria still top Group 1 and now have the maximum six points from their two games and are the only side to have done that, although admittedly some teams have only played once. In the other game Crystilakere drew 2 – 2 with Pedriana which leaves them third and fourth respectively. Hypocria move to the Harewood Ground next for a match against former World Champions and the current third best team in the region, Crystilakere.

Rams draw with HC team 1-1, still tied with them for group top

Brian Dougood did in todays match what he could not do in the U21 finals, score against Hockey Canada. It was just too bad that the Canadians of Hockey scored one back, giving a 1-1 draw to again foil Fmjphoenix's attempt to get past Hockey Canada in another football event.

The Rams had a good chance near the end of the match to take the lead and the win, but the penelty kick was wasted because it was kicked much to high. It sailded past the net and into the stands. This marks the second meeting between Hockey Canada and Fmjphoenix that the Canucks have managed to take something away from Fmjphoenix. Right now, fans across the nation are finding HC as a thorn in their side, at least in football matches.

Fmjphoenix does not have a matchup today, so they will take the time for some extra practice time to prepare for their matchday 4 meeting against Druida. But it will all be anticipation for matchday 5, against friendly rivals, Krytenia. Rumors are floating around that the Golden Cafetiere will be available before the matchup if the Krytenian Regional Squad would like a meeting to have some.

"And you join us back at Jotneheim Park for live AOCAF action, as our beloved Aroras face off yet again against Nedalia. It seemed only yesterday that we were treated to some top quality World Cup footy between our two nations, but here we are again. We'll take a look at the starting eleven first - it seems like At-Tariq is largely keeping faith with the same team that has started the first two matches, with the only change coming in the shape of debutant Cynfor Gwyns, who replaces Lewis Bin Majd up front. Stuart... your thoughts on that?"

"Hmmmm, it would seem that we're loking for a bit more height up front, and at 6'2" Gwyns cerainly provides that. Perhaps he'll be used as a target for some long crosses, although I hope that doesn't mean our boys will be resorting to route one football here. Still, I'm pleased to see the 4-2-4 is being retained - this postive formation seems to suit our lads, even though we've yet to win here."

"And going back to last night's defeat to Starblaydia, are you happy with the way the team performed?"

"Well, it seems Gareth Coates has taken a leaf out of Tiddles book by trying to take a chunk out of the opposition. I'd love to know what the hell our defence was thinking though, letting their keeper waltz through like that. Still, it was good to see us recover from that setback. Chris Hutton has had a good tournament so far - lets just hope the rest of our forwards follow suit."

"If there's one thing you'd like to see improve for tonight, what would it be?"

"We've got to be more resiliant in defence. The boys did well to hold out for so long against the top ranked team in AO, so to concede a goal near the end like that was a real shame. Sure, those Starblaydi youngsters up front played well, but our boys have got to hold their concentration for the full 90 minutes."

"Now, I think the teams are about to come out onto the pitch. Stuart - any predictions?"

"You must be kidding. Too close to call, this one. I can only say one thing... COME ON YOU 'RORAS!"

After it appeared to be that the Nedalia Lions could never actually win a game against Bettia, they went out today and proved otherwise. It has been the eastern neighbors who have gotten the best of the Lions, but the empathetic 2-0 victory over Bettia showed true class from the Nedalia squad. The true can be said for the Bettian squad, who came off of a tough loss to Starblaydia before succumbing to the Lions.

After a bye on Matchday Two, the Lions definitely looked the more rested of the two teams. The Bettians themselves played with their usual fire, but it seemed their legs gave away towards the end, understandable considering the intensity of their previous match. Despite the 2-0 scoreline, the game itself was mostly even, with 53% possession for the Lions as compared to 47% for the Aroras. Unmistakably, however, it was Nedalia's attacking flair, and brilliance, which won this match for them, despite the clean sheet recorded by GK Derrell Lynch.

Cockbill Street based Andrew Blod got the starting nod over a hamstring-bothered Chris Yamtech, and made an immediate impact. The Bettian defense had their hands full with the striker, who commented later that it was as he was playing "infront of his home fans." Nevertheless, it was he who recorded the first goal, breaking through in the 33rd minute after a fabulous assist by Bettian based Trent Hardman.

The 2nd half mustve come with a prior lesson from Randy Gamman about not letting this game slip away, with memories still fresh from the first game against Bettia in the WC 23 qualifying campaign. The defense, which showed signs of cracks in the 1st half, tightened up and shut almost any offense scheme the Aroras came up with. On the offensive end, the pressure continued, but Aroras defense turned up the heat as well, with the majority of the possession for both teams coming in the midfield.

After the 75th minute, however, one could obvious see that the Bettians were starting to run on empty. The usually resilient Bettians were running a tad slower than usual, and that was what allowed Nene to break free. The star player came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute, and with his legs still fresh, he beat out 2 Bettian defenders purely on his pace before chipping the ball over the Bettian keeper. The match ended with celebrations from the Nedalian players, who have finally lifted the Bettian curse.

However, it would not be the rivalry it is if there wasnt a love affair of sorts between the two nations. As the Bettian players walked off the pitch, the Nedalia section of the stadium began to chant:

Bettia, Oh Bettia
We Love You So
Bettia Oh Bettia
We Wanted to Let You Know
Bettia Oh Bettia
You're One of a Kind
Bettia Oh Bettia
In Our Country You are Welcome Anytime!

So with that, the Lions stand with two games played and 4 points. Having drawn against a tough Lamonian team and finally lifted the Bettian curse, it is believed that the only team Nedalia should lose to would be the Starblaydi squad.

Chacor lose two consecutive, fall to last

Chacor now holds an 0-1-2 record in Group 3 after losing two consecutive matches to Lamoni (4-0) and Starblaydia (2-0). In both matches, the team was surprisingly lacklustre - not much was expected of them, it has to be said - but most within the team expected to score at least one goal over these two matches.

Chacor faces Nedalia in its final group match and is officially out of the running for qualification to the second round.

Stalemate

After two excellent performances against Turori and Pedriana many fans expected the run to end against former World Champions Crystilakere. Thanks to another solid defensive display the Hyppos hung on to grab a point and remain top of Group A.

Coach N’Dumbu-Nsungu obviously had defence on his mind with his team selection as he dropped attacking midfielder Bora Burdali to the bench and replaced him with the much more defensive Luc Sinclair.

Hypocria’s chances were few and far between but Shirko and Marshall both came close in the first half to giving Hypocria an underserved lead. But once again it was Ricardo Kindelan who stole the headlines with a string of good saves to deny the Crystils who, despite dominating much of the match, couldn’t find a way past the in form keeper.

Hypocria 0 – 0 Crystilakere

This draw takes Hypocria’s points tally to seven and keeps the Hyppos at the top of Group A. In the other game the hosts overcame the disappointment of their opening day defeat to Turori with a comfortable 3 – 0 over bottom side Pedriana. That result lifts Cockbill Street into second place, four points behind Hypocria and with a game in hand.

The host nation can take a large chunk out of that points deficit when they play Hypocria at the Vimesbairn National Stadium on matchday 4. But a win for the Hyppos will guarantee top spot in Group A regardless of the results in the final round of group matches.

Giovanni Gets His First
Starblaydia advance to top of Group

In defeating Chacor Two-Nil, Starblaydia have climbed to the top of Group Three over Lamoni, who rested today. Both Lamoni and Starblaydia have now played two games, with the crucial match between them coming next.

"This match should decide who ends up topping this group," said Captain Martin Watt after the game, "as good as Nedalia are, this one is between Lamoni and us, and we're not here to lie down and let someone take our Trophy away from us."

Syku Lyku-Agbayani's 18th international goal was combined with Giovanni Lopez's first to sink the no-hopers from the Liverpool England colony in a very one-sided match. Though Lamoni will claim their 4-0 victory over the Chacorans was 'one of the most one-sided matches in AOCAF history', their historians obviously haven't bee looking through the records at Starblaydia's matches, which include them scoring six goals on three seperate occasions.

AOCAF3 Quarter-Final
Starblaydia 6-1 Vilita
(Robertson, Naoki, de Souza Lima, A. Matranga [2], Montefalcon)

AOCAF5 Matchday 1
Starblaydia 6-2 Big Pimento
(S. Di Bradini [4], Salisbury, De Souza)

AOCAF6 MAtchday 3
Starblaydia 6-2 Nova Britannicus
(Madray [2], Lyku-Agbayani, Matis, Loze, Tumunzahar)

Starblaydia will, of course, be pushing for another six goals in a massive victory against Lamoni, just to teach them what a one-sided match really is.

Lamoni vs. Starblaydia

In the most anticipated match in group III, Lamoni will be facing off against the three time AOCAF winning Starblaydi squad. This game is partly for bragging rights (even though Lamoni has yet to win against Starblaydia), but mostly for group and knockout positioning. It is not seen as likely that Starblaydia will be able to score six goals against the Hawks, but some of the Iskara Daii players on the Starblaydi squad may want revenge for their inability to defeat half of the members of the Lamonian squad in the AO Champs League. The Lamonian AOCAF squad is actually composed of members of both of Lamoni's entries in that league; and has done fairly well so far. The expected result of the match is: Lamoni 1 - Starblaydia 3. That is actually being rather generous on the Starblaydi side.

Stars hunt Wabbits, 1-0

For teams that have hardly if ever met on the football field, Sarzonia and Spruitland have developed quite an intense dislike of each other. That was evident in Sarzonia Coach Bryson Juergens' disparaging comments about the Wabbits, saying they were the only team the Stars expected an easy win against. The win didn't qualify as easy, but the Stars managed to stave off elimination for one more match, defeating Spruitland 1-0 behind Kevin Wilson's 19th minute goal.

"We didn't play as well as we could have or should have," Juergens said of the Stars. "But we'll take the three points, but we have an uphill climb against us now with Vilita in the offing."

The Stars (1-1-1) have one win against Vilita in four tries, with that lone win coming in a surprise run during an AOCAF tournament. The Stars have never failed to advance out of the group stage in the seven previous tournaments they've competed in, withdrawing from AOCAF VII.

That streak looks to be in serious jeopardy against a Vilita side that has long been the standard bearer in an Atlantian Oceania region that has become the world's standard bearer for football. The Stars say they will be undaunted by the task.

"We've faced impossible odds before and we've come out on top," Juergens said, recalling his spot in the midfield when the Stars defeated Crystilakere in their first-ever match, 3-2 in the first-ever AOCAF tournament. "Didn't [onetime Washington Bullets Coach] Dick Motta once say 'the opera isn't over 'till the fat lady sings'?" She ain't sung a note yet."

Lamoni loses 2-0

It was a hard fought game, but Lamoni just couldn't get it done against a tough Starblaydi squad for all their posturing. However, there is a bright side for the Hawks. Lamoni is expected to win their next match against Bettia, and we would be VERY surprised if Nedalia managed to defeat Starblaydia. It's expected that Lamoni just might make it into the knockouts based on goal difference. The Hawks should fare better in the knockouts than they have in the group stages, but only time will tell.

Lamoni - 0
Starblaydia - 2 (20, 25)

Lamoni Off the Deep End

-------------------It was one of the most lopsided wins in the history of the AOCAF competition... or so said the reporters in Lamoni. They did not see, did they, the history of Starblaydia. Even ignoring the fact that a 6-2 win is no more lopsided than a 4-0 victory, Starblaydia's 6-1 shocker over the Vilitans was certainly nothing to be looked down upon. However, even that result would not rank amongst the most lopsided wins in the history of the AOCAF.

-------------------A 5-1 Victory over Florianapolis in AOCAF VIII can be added to the list of more impressive, but still equally lopsided as Lamoni's suggested record-style victory. But Perhaps those Lamonians would prefer to go back to the same matchup, in AOCAF VI. Sure, the same amount of goals were scored at matches end, but all of them by the Regional Cats, who with the help of Jan Christiansen (2), Teariki Mane (2), Michele Mariano and Calaesa Mitaroka slapped a 6-0 blowout victory on their feline rivals. The result even skies over the impressive 5-0 thrashing Vilita recorded over deadweight Chacor in AOCAF V. But it only goes to equal the pair of 6-0 thrashings that Vilia dished out on Balaal in AOCAF III, and barely squeeks past the 6-1 result achieved over Aquiliana in the same cup. Heck, even the second ever game held in AOCAF history can boast a more lopsided scoreline than the now seemingly insignifigant 4-0 result produced by the Lamonians, as a fledgling competition the Vilitan's toppled their Turorian counterparts 6-1 en route to the final of AOCAF I.

Starblaydia Score Six...
...in their three matches so far

Two first-half goals killed off most of the opposition that Lamoni had to offer in this match, sending Starblaydia through to the next round. Winning his twenty-fifth cap, Captain Martin Watt opened the scoring from a goalmouth scramble, Lamoni's defence not managing to clear the ball out of the area before Watt could hurl his left foot at the ball and into the roof of the net.

Just five minutes later is was Fmjphoenix-based Christian Macia who made the second breakthrough and killed off the rest of the half, such was Lamoni's reaction to two quick goals against them. Receiving the ball from Ryan Kovac, Macia thought about darting into the box but instead took a right-footed shot from around twenty yards, curling it expertly into the top corner for his second goal of the Championship, putting him on top of the Starblaydi scoring charts for the moment.

Now assured for progression to the next round, Starblaydia have to make sure its the Quarter-Final by assuring first place, and not the Seoncd Round. The only way Starblaydia can now finish second in this group is to lose their final Group Match against Nedalia. Both teams, however, would surely be happy with a draw as Lamoni require a win and a Lions' loss to avoid playing the Second-Placed team in the 'Group of Death'.

Final Score:
Starblaydia 2 - 0 Lamoni

(Watt 20, Macia 25) - (None)

Hyppos Qualify Despite First Defeat

With a day off on matchday 5 Hypocria coach Guylain N’Dumbu-Nsungu can put his feet up safe in the knowledge that he has steered his side into the knockout stages of the AOCAF tournament at the first time of asking. This despite being comfortably turned over by the host nation Cockbill Street on matchday 4.

In front of a huge crowd at the Vimesbairn National Stadium the Hypocrian team looked a shadow of the side that had beaten Turori and Pedriana and drawn with Crystilakere and could find no answer to the strong attacking play of the hosts. The Hyppos managed just three shots in the entire match and only Ashley Marshall’s second half effort actually troubled the keeper. At the other end Ricardo Kindelan was forced to pick the ball out of his net twice in the first half and once again in the second as Cockbill Street secured three points to take them into second place in Group A.

Hypocria 0 – 3 Cockbill Street

Meanwhile at the Harewood Ground Turori beat Crystilakere 2 – 1 to stay level on points with Cockbill Street. The result also ended the Crystil’s chances of qualification. Hypocria, Cockbill Street and Turori all advance from Group A and all that remains to be played for is in what order they qualify. Hypocria are top with seven points but have played a game more than the two other sides who both currently have six points. With just Pedriana to face, the Eels will be confident of finishing top of the group as Cockbill Street have a much tricky match against Crystilakere. For Hypocria it is a case of watching and waiting.

The coach has also confirmed the release of midfielder Michael Powell and defender Karl Nalepka from the AOCAF squad. Neither played has featured in the tournament but both are expected to be included in Hypocria’s Cup of Harmony squad when it is announced in the not too distant future.

SHOCK!! Bettia look set to crash out at the first round...

HORROR!! Bettia await first ever victory in the AOCAF...

SURPRISE!! Bettia aren't bottom of their group...

Yes dear readers, those plucky Aroras have to put their dreams of regional glory on hold for a while longer as one draw and two defeats have left them with a near-impossible mountain to climb.

And so they approach their last game against Lamoni with a happy-go-lucky attitude, knowing that tonight's result is almost meaningless. An ultra-attacking formation will see Bettia attempt to score a few goals to send the fans back home happy, and to give the Aroras a boost ahead of the upcoming Cup of Harmony.

But hold on... is tonight's result really that meaningless? A three goal victory for the Bettians would see them through on goal difference - but we're not holding our breath here. However, sitting pretty in second place is Nedalia, but they can be caught if they lose and Lamoni win. So what do the Aroras do?

Do they go all out to beat Lamoni, meaning that they travel to Druida / Krytenia on a high? Of course, this plan falls apart on the 'beat Lamoni' bit...

Or do they play defensively to prevent Lamoni winning and ensure that Nedalia finish in at least second place? Of course, this plan falls apart on the 'prevent Lamoni winning' part...

The answer? A bit of both, as the management have announced that Bettia will be starting in their familiar 5-3-2 formation. Making his debut in goal is Lorshill United's Robert Sole. Lining up in front of him are Musa Williams, Gareth Coates and Gwynoro Tyrno'r, with Geraint Carew and Wasim Morgan filling the wing-back positions. The midfield is made up of John Connick in the centre, Evan Brooks on the right, and the pacy Jason Abdullah on the left. And up front hoping to bang a few in are Chris Hutton and Cynfor Gwyns, making his international debut.

So there we have it. Will Bettia's AOCAF IX swansong be as sweet as a nightingale's, or will it be ruined by those eagles?

The Lions were able to pull away 3 points in a difficult, tactical match that saw more fouls than shots on either side. The Chacorians had nothing to play for, but were seemingly intent on making sure Nedalia share the same fate that was cast on them. The only thing that seperated them was a goal from Starblaydian based Innit Point in the 78th minute from a superbly taken freekick. The entire stadium was expecting Nene to take it, but it was Point who managed to do what no other Nedalian could do; put the ball in the back of the Chacorian net.

From the get go, the match was physical, and after the first few minutes, it became very clear that it was strategy that was going to win or lose this match. Despite being void of red cards, both squads collected a total of 9 yellow cards; 5 from the Lions, 4 for the Chacorians.

This leaves one final match for the Lions against their U21 rivals Starblaydia. Sitting in 2nd place, the only way they can mess this one up is if they lose to Starblaydia and the Bettians lose Lamonians. Knowing the relationship between Bettia and Nedalia, one can be sure the Aroras will be doing eveything in their power to make sure their western neigbors qualify. In fact, it is rumored that tens of thousands of Nedalians are going to make the Bettia - Lamoni match to cheer on their eastern neighbors, attempting to will them to victory. It is going to be an exciting final matchday.

Street Qualify With Help
Trounce Hypocria

Finally, the Streetians' striker pair of Donald Ure and Edward Clarke fire. After pouring in goals in the Trotsgrad tournament - until the final, that is - they played little part in the 3-0 win over Pedriana, in which the Streetians got two goals through penalties - slotted in by veteran Callum Cummings. However, against Hypocria today, they were back at their potent best, and when the Hypocrian midfield was over-run as well, there was little resistance - even less that what one would expect in a neighbour-derby.

1-0 came after only nine minutes, a classic Streetian attack - Einarsson raided down the left side, crossed in, it was headed out again by Marius Black, but Harald Stonefinder picked it up from the other side and crossed in again - where Donald Ure stuffed the ball behind a hapless Ricardo Kindelan. In fact, Kindelan was rather disappointing on the day, as a simple lob from Ure beat him in the thirty-second minute to ensure 2-0.

G'irgah Christine Andrews, desperate for some good results after the impossibly poor World Cup, decided to rest key players, but Ure and Clarke stayed on to regain confidence before the World Cup, which worked well - as Clarke slotted in another goal ten minutes from time.

Cockbill Street now play a dejected Crystilakere, who were knocked out thanks to a 1-2 defeat to Turori. If they win, they'll assure themselves of a place in the quarter-finals, unless Turori surprise everyone and beat Pedriana by a massive amount of goals. Hypocria, meanwhile, have qualified for the second round but need somewhat of a miracle to get to the quarter-finals.

Hawk's make it in!

With a 2-0 win over Bettia, Lamoni has made it into the AOCAF IX knockouts, facing Nova Brittanicus next. Not much is known of this Starblaydi colony, but it is a few spots below Lamoni in the regional rankings (OOC: the Regional Rankings need an update). If Lamoni should defeat NB, they would face Krytenia next. Lamoni has faced Krytenia before, and it would be a good match; with both sides having a pretty good chance of winning. This would put Lamoni in the final round of the knockouts, hopefully in the 1st place match.

While the win against Bettia was not that suprising, it saved Lamoni from the indignity of missing the knockouts for two times in a row. The only reason that Lamoni is not in second place in group III is because of the Nedalia-Starblaydi draw in their match. Ted Kubik scored both goals for the Hawks, who really seemed to be toying with Bettia more than anything else. It really is a shame that Starblaydia couldn't defeat Nedalia, but what are you going to be able to do about it?

Lamoni - 2 Ted Kubik (85, 86)
Bettia - 0

Another draw keeps Rams in 3rd, prepare for Hypocria

After their third draw of the AOCAF, the Rams had a very un-Fmjphoenix like record of 1 win, 3 draws, and 1 loss. Most Fmjphoenix teams are known for their all or nothing results, as they love to attack with everything they have got. But this team, being lead by the previous coach of the Junior Vikings George Rush, they played a suprisingly conservative series of matches against their region-mates.

But now the Rams will be looking for a chance to play their own type of football against the suprisingly shocking Hypocrian squad that has been strong in their first AOCAF. Coach Rush is looking towards his front 3 to produce more goals and show the Fmjphoenix attacking spirit.

The Daily Druid

AOCAF'S ON?
By Liam Gessemschmitthaagen-Po.

While their nation has been actually doing kinda OK in the World Cup for once, people seem to have forgotten that a Druidan "B" team is representing their nation over in Cockbill Street in the latest AOCAF championship.

You hadn't heard? Well, tis true. Wins against Nojika and Hockey Canada, a draw against Fmjphoenix and a loss to Krytenia mean that Druida have finished in their now customary position of second in their group.

The bad news is, they face the host nation next. And then, if the Rainbows make it through that, there's vilita, who will be wanting to make up for their first choice team's shock result in Eauz.

So while few people have noticed that the AOCAF is going on this time around, it doesn't look all that likely that many more are going to see it here anyway. Such a shame, really.

Kecker Names Youthful AOCAF Squad

Former Vilita National Team Captain and Strike FC Manager Santo Kecker has been given control of the Vilita Regional Cats for AOCAF IX in Cockbill Street. Despite rumors that Strike's Jimmy Kater would make an appearance in the AOCAF, Kecker has confirmed that the Vilitan #1 will be spending the offseason with his family. Inland Peaks' 19 year old Jawz Oaker will be Kecker's goalkeeper of choice for the competition. While Kecker has called upon Jhanna City's Tulio Arizmendi to anchor the defense, he will also be relying on the inexperienced trio of Timmy Leaburn, Dene Shaw and Ricata Tivalan to join Arizmendi in the Vilita defensive line.

At the personal request of Kecker and teammate Esorijan Marelja, Strike's Thierry Columbo will be returning to the competition and work along side Vilita Under 21 midfielders Roman Majara, Toby Tzikas, Contall Rumaoa, Marelja, brent Obwinyi and 18 year old Terrarokka Spirit midfielder Winfield Karega, who will be making his first appearances for any Vilitan National team when he first steps on the field in AOCAF IX. Also called up for his first ever International Competition is Mavaloiao's 18 year old Striker Bevan Holness. Holness however will have to compete with Under 21 duo Tika Massa and Kris Wrice, as well as Julian Lisbie and experience Iskara Daii striker Carmine Mbidzo if he is going to see any games this competition.

Starblaydia Progress to Quarters
They have always done that, though

It just had to be Innit Point, didn't it? Well, of course, as we barely know any other Nedalians by sight. The two Internashionale colleagues fought out a personal battle for pride, though between Giovanni Lopez and Innit Point - as with Starblaydia and Nedalia themselves - honours were even.

Starblaydia progress as Group Winners to the Quarter-Final while Nedalia, as runners-up, face 3rd-placed Bedistan, which seems somewhat of an unlucky draw as Nova Britannicus stole second-spot in Group 4, the Britannicans and Bedistanis between them dumping Sarzonia out of the competition.

Final Score:
Starblaydia 1 - 1 Nedalia

(G. Lopez 44') - (Point 38')

Wabbits finish last in group

Vilita – Spruitland: 2 – 0
Sarzonia – Spruitland: 1 – 0

Not unexpectedly, the Spruitland Wegional Wabbits have lost their two remaining matches in the AOCAF IX group stage, settling them firmly in last place in Group 4, and sending them back home with one point and one goal. Perhaps that last part is the most disappointing aspect of Spruitland’s AOCAF campaign: after Jeff Wong’s goal on Matchday 1 against Nova Britannicus, they did not manage to score again.

Defensively however, the Wabbits seemed to have their act more than together. While the class and experience of the opponents was generally too much to be able to keep the zero on the board – except against Bedistan – the young Spruitland defense did a fine job of limiting the damage, keeping the goals-against tally down to six. With a back line that had a total of four senior caps between them before this tournament, coach Cor Bensen may have a ‘luxury problem’ on his hands when the selection time for World Cup 24 comes along.

The young central defensive duo Wigmeister and Opdebeeck kept up their momentum from the Under-21 World Cup and both put in a serious bid for a starting place in the World Cup 24 team. The soon-to-start Cup of Harmony may see them get a few more chances to prove themselves first.

And Simon Briers could see his place in goal being put under pressure as well, after strong keeping performances in AOCAF IX. Johan Verbeek had a somewhat shaky start against the Nova Brits, but followed up impressively, first with a clean sheet against Bedistan and on the last matchday by allowing only one goal against defending World Champs Sarzonia. Under-21 goalie Tristan Verelst saw his strong season in the Vilitan Stellar Division rewarded with his first senior cap, against – of course - Vilita. Verelst allowed two, but did not lose face, and Spruitland seems assured of a strong man between the stakes for a good while.

The Wabbits never really had a chance against the Vilitan side, in a match that was a largely one-sided affair. Like Verelst, Vilita midfielder Malover Stokks was allowed some action against the nation he plays in all season, and he rewarded that chance by opening the score. Tika Massa settled the match in the second half with a fine header.

The match against defending World Champions Sarzonia was a little more even. Some animosity between the two teams after World Cup 23 Qualifying left the Spruitlanders clearly motivated to do well. Even after Kevin Wilson opened the score for the Stars in the 19th minute, the Wabbits managed to keep the hope for a draw alive throughout the match, but were unable to push through the experienced Sarzonian defense.

And so ends AOCAF IX for the Wabbits, a tournament that will probably not be remembered in Spruitland for much else than it being the first AOCAF they participated in – though perhaps the 0-0 against Bedistan will be referenced to once or twice in future encounters. More will be expected of them in AOCAF X, but coach Cor Bensen will have a few other chickens to fry first. Bensen and some of the players will travel directly from Cockbill Street to Druida for the Cup of Harmony, where they’ll be hoping to get better results against teams more within their league.

Aces And Jacks
David Hoxton in Cockbill Street

And so to AOCAF. After reaching the second round of the World Cup, many Krytenian fans, like their Druidan counterparts, had forgotten there was an AOCAF on. So, here's a recap.

PRE-CUP: It's the "Krytenia Jacks" now. Revealing the senior's new nickname of "Aces", the B side went three down the pack for their new name.

MD1: Never happened. Again. Seriously, we're starting to go off these Phoenicians.

MD2: No game, no fun. Though Spruitland drew 0-0 again...

MD3: Jumping Jacks. Five-two. Nojika get well and truly zinged, and life is good once more. Aaaah.

MD4: Two in a row, eh? The Canucks are vanquished, and the Jacks chase down Druida.

MD5: Two goals, no fans. An eerily empty stadium, as barely 1,200 fans turn up to see Krytenia qualify for the last eight.

MD5: Laughing at others' expense. Sarzonia are eliminated; meanwhile Starblaydia are held by (snigger) Nedalia!

Repechage: Lamoni next. They beat Nova Britannicus to earn the right to play the Jacks. Meanwhile Nedalia continue the freak-out by taking out Bedistan. Impressive.

Hawks ready for Krytenia

With a spin, a twist, and a kick, Ted Kubik scored one of two Lamonian goals in the first round of the knockouts. This was at five minutes into the competition, and Lamoni dominated from then on, with even the goalkeeper doing his best. It turned into a defensive match, with both sides getting shots on goal; until Ted Hause came in with a headbutt to make it 2-0 in favor of Lamoni at 85 minutes. Nova Brittanicus really did not seem to be on top of their game in this match, and were perhaps thinking that they would be able to dispatch the Hawks as easily as their Starblaydi masters. This match will teach them differently.

As a result of the winning of this match, Lamoni moves on to face Krytenia. The Hawks have faced Krytenia in both the AOCAF, and the World Cup. The results of these matches have shown that both sides have a good chance of winning this match. This is a match that will truly go to the side that wants it more. At the moment, it seems that many Krytenians are unaware that the AOCAF is actually being played, but the outcome will be decided on the football field, as always.

Lamoni - 2 Ted Kubik (5), Ted Hause (85)
NB - 0

Lions Feed On Lions; Turori Awaits

The Nedalia Lions advanced to the quarter-finals today after one of the most impressive victories in the history of the squad, defeating the Bedistan Lions 1 - 0 in the AOCAF Cup IX second round. While it wasnt the offensive, attacking game people were hoping for, you would be hard pressed to find a Nedalian who would declare himself unhappy with the results of the match.

The goal came in the 63rd minute from a free-kick from Nene, who's season in Vilita has been rather uneventful other than his midseason move from Marine Coast United to Inland Peaks. The 22 year old's form for the Lions, however, has not suffered one bit, as he continued to put forth game winning goals, such as the one he scored today, on a regular basis for the team.

In their first AOCAF Cup campaign last competition, the Lions advanced to the Quarter-Finals as well before finally getting knocked out by Vilita. This time, the Lions face a tough Turori squad, but there is silent optimism that they will see the semi-finals in their second try.

It's Us and... Who?

-------------------As Santo Kecker walked down the tunnell to the delight of the frantic Vilitan faithful, he knew that he had a team performing as well as any team in the entire history of the AOCAF. Kecker, who has been an instant hit since taking the reigns of the Vilitan regional team, had just led his makeshift blend of youth and experience to a commanding 3-0 victory over World Cup 23 finalists Druida. The match was much more for Vilitans than a Quarter Final victory in the AOCAF, however.

-------------------It was the Druidans who knocked the Jungle Cats out of World Cup 23, embarrassingly in the Finals Group Stage. After going into the match with a three point advantage over barely-qualified Druida, Vilita knew they needed only a draw against their rainbow bearing counterparts and they would be through to the World Cup Second round. But it was a 0-1 loss to the Druidans that would put the two teams level on points and goal differential for the second and final place in the next round. After much deliberation, it was determined that Druida would advance by benefit of the only match played between the two teams head to head, the same 1-0 result that created the precarious situation to begin with.

-------------------Since then the Druidans have been on a tear, holding no prisoners on their way to the World Cup Final which takes place later today. But the Vilitan national team players have not just been sitting back on their couches and watching. Every since the moment they were knocked out, Vilitans have been training with one goal in mind, the rematch against Druida. That match came sooner than most expected when the two teams were pitted against each other in the Quarter Finals of the AOCAF, and the Vilitan hunger paid off in a big way. The celebrations, however, only began with the 3-0 win over Druida.

-------------------After returning to the locker room, coach Kecker and his team learned that not only had they advanced, but that none of their main opponents had managed to join them. Hot shot Hypocria nubbed favorites Starblaydia on Penalty Kicks, while rivals Turori were stuffed 1-0 by up and coming Nedalia, shaping a new-look AOCAF Semi Finals that prepares to break the mold of the big four AOCAF nations dominating on the regional level. This trend was apparent with Crystilakere's shocking group stage exit, and solidified further with the impressive performances of Hypocria and the other Semi Finalists. While being interviewed, Coach Kecker admitted knowing little about most of the semi finalists, but that his team would be prepared for whomever they came up against, and were determined to etch Vilita's name on a national competition trophy twice, for the first time in the nations long but mixed history in international sports.

Hypocria into the Quarters

When the AOCAF groups were first announced the main objective for debutants Hypocria was not to finish bottom of the group. The new objective is slightly more ambitious as the Hyppos continue to upset the form book.

The reward of a second place finish in Group 1 was a second round match-up with Fmjphoenix, the third placed team in Group 2. The nations had met once before, at the semi final of Under-21 World Cup 17, that day Fmjphoenix lived up to their billing as favourites and advanced on penalties. Once again Hypocria was very much the underdog, but this underdog can really bite.

The first half was very even, Burdali put the Hyppos in front but the Rams hit back five minutes before the break to level the game. Fmjphoenix dominated much of the second half but goalkeeper Kindelan, who aside from the game against Cockbill Street has had a great tournament, kept out the Ram’s much vaunted attack.

The game went into extra time of which the first half was pretty uneventful. The second half sprang into life less than two minutes in when Andrei Shirko turned in a corner to give Hypocria a vital lead. Fmjphoenix had to push players forward and they were caught on the break, Ashley Marshall scoring to send the Hyppos into the quarter finals.

Hypocria 3 – 1 Fmjphoenix (aet)
Burdali
Shirko
Marshall

The win sets up a quarter final with reigning AOCAF champions Starblaydia, a match former Starblaydia coach Guylain N’Dumbu-Nsungu had been waited for ever since his appointment as Hypocria’s national coach.

Guylain Haunts the Champions

The entire nation of Hypocria seemed to ground to a complete halt ahead of the AOCAF quarter final against reigning champions Starblaydia. As the two sides took to the field at the Vimesbairn Cricket Ground countless millions of Hypocrians settled down to watch what would become the greatest victory in the nation’s relatively short sporting history. It would also prove to be a great personal moment for Hypocria coach Guylain N'Dumbu-Nsungu.

Hypocria goalkeeper Ricardo Kindelan has had a great tournament but he could do nothing about Macia’s goal that put the region’s number one team in front in the first half. It was not looking good for the Hyppos as Starblaydia stroked the ball around confidently in a rather one sided 45 minutes of football.

The coach clearly knew what to say to his players at the interval as they came out at the start of the second half looking much more fired up. Shirko had a couple of quick chances but neither troubled Corominas too much. Kindelan meanwhile was kept busy by the lively Starblaydi strikers.

Ten minutes before fulltime Hypocria snatched an equaliser. Baxter played the ball forward to Dospel who flicked it on to his club team mate Marshall. Marshall beat a defender, broke into the box and fired low and hard into the back of the net, his third goal of the tournament. It was a goal that Hypocria probably didn’t deserve but the millions of celebrating fans back home really didn’t care.

The game went into extra time. The coach made defensive chances which seemed to give Starblaydia the initiative but Kindelan again showed that he is one of the best keepers around. Half an hour of extra time came and went, although is seemed like much longer, and penalties would decide who would advance into the semi finals. The semi final opponents were also unknown as the game between Krytenia and Lamoni had also gone to penalties.

After losing on penalties in both the Baptism of Fire semi final and the Under-21 World Cup 17 semi final another shootout was not exactly welcomed by the fans. Starblaydia converted their first four penalties but Baxter, Shirko, Marshall and Blake were all successful to keep the sides neck and neck after eight. Kindelan’s excellent tournament was summed up in a split second as he dived to his right to turn the fifth Starblaydi penalty away and put Hypocria within one kick of the semi final. Up stepped Bora Burdali, the player who had missed the crucial spot kick against Spruitland in the BoF. He ran up, millions held their breath, and placed it wide of Corominas to send the Hyppos through and the champions out. The smile on the face of Guylain N’Dumbu-Nsungu said it all, he was officially the happiest Starblaydi in the whole world at that moment.

Hypocria 1 – 1 Starblaydia (aet)
5 – 4 on penalties

Hypocria are not the only surprise semi finalists. Nedalia beat Turori 1 – 0 to earn their place in the last four. The Lions will face Vilita who comfortably beat World Cup finalists Druida 3 – 0. The Hyppos now face Lamoni for a place in the final itself. The Eagles are through after an epic penalty shootout win, eventually beating Krytenia 9 – 8. Can Hypocria punch above their weight once more and earn a place in the AOCAF final at the first attempt? After beating the champions anything is possible.

What's up with Hypocria? We are the Hawks, not the Eagles!

The Hawks had an epic match with Krytenia that went into penalty kicks before anyone scored, but which resulted in a high scoring game. Lamoni won 9-8, placing them in the finals, with a good possibility of facing Hypocria next. If the Hawks win this upcoming match, Lamoni will be playing for the AOCAF cup.

In other Hypocria related news, Lamonians were in an uproar as a Hypocrian newspaper article misnamed our beloved Hawks the 'Eagles.' If Lamoni does indeed face Hypocria in their next match, then the Hawks will be even more determined to win by a huge margin. As other AO nations already know, Lamonians don't generally react well to being insulted.

Back to the epic shootout. Lamonian players Lonnie Petrovich, Allan Tippie, Christian Silk, Erik Lanasa, Ted Kubik, Darren Wilhoite, Lonnie Panetta, Darryl Standard, and Christian Schoenfeld all made goals with their chance, putting Lamoni over Krytenia by one goal. The Hawks were gracious about their win, shaking hands with the losing Krytenian side before leaving the field for some well earned rest and relaxation before their next match.

An unofficial Starblaydi source has informed us that they are expecting a Hypocria/Nedalia first place match, but we feel that the Hawks will do everything they can to change that. This is the best shot that the Hawks have ever had to win the AOCAF cup, and there is a general feeling that many Lamonians will be well and truly dissapointed if the Hawks fail to win the cup this time. Their previous high finish was in third place, showing that the Hawks can do well when they want to. Let's just hope that they don't dissapoint. It is said that even President Stone will be watching the match in between diplomatic sessions between the two Khazaronian factions that he is currently hosting in an undisclosed location within Lamoni's borders. It would be quite the early Christmas present if Lamoni were to end the negotiations amicably, as well as winning the AOCAF cup.

Kecker Impressed by Path to Final

----------------"Well needless to say, Jawz must have been a little bit rusty in the first match against Nova Britannicus giving up that first half equalizer before we came back and won the game fairly convincingly. Some of the lads remember that horrible match back losing out to Nova Britannicus to snap the 30 match unbeaten run, I know Carmine does, so he must have been thrilled to net the first goal just five minutes in. But of course I have to be proud of the effort the young guys put in, Tika Massa and Kris Wrice both scored and Brent Obwinyi even shocked himself when he put the clincher in five minutes from time."

----------------"Next up for us was Spruitland, and I know Jawz really had his game going though and he kept our lead in place off Malovar Stokks' early goal before Tika scored to put the game away. This was a good momentum boost into the game against Bedistan, because we knew this was one team that had a chance of putting one over on us. Carmine got us off to a dream start with his lucky goal in that one, but after that it looked for a bit like we were chasing ourselves as Bedistan controlled most of the action. We held on until the dying moments of the game when Mauro Capuano stole that awkward back pass and made that defender for Bedistan look a complete fool. I think they gave up about then so Carmine was able to net the third that really flattered us, but we weren't going to complain. "

----------------"Carmine really took it upon himself to get us the three points over Sarzonia which locked us in with the best record in the tournament in every category. Carmine had a brilliant double, but Jawz kept another clean sheet which always helps especially in tough games like that one. That set up the big clash with Druida that we all know about, what a match that was. The unlikliest of players opened it up I'd say when Dene Shaw popped in that goal, and then Thierry Columbo, great player and very tough to defend against when the pitch is a little damp he just digs right in and makes no notice of it. Carmine may be pushing for a return to the full squad with all the goals he's scoring here, though, yet another to cap off the game against Druida which was just incredible."

----------------"I don't really know what happened to the favorites but when we got to the Semi's, Starblaydia, Turori, Krytenia, Crystilakere, Fmjphoenix, none of them were anywhere to be found. We ended up getting drawn against Nedalia, which was a match we were all excited about. the Lions play a very exciting game and some thought they might be able to pull off the upset. Fortunately we defended well and Jawz was brilliant yet again, finally Carmine scored the winner in the second half and we defended the rest of the match well to get back to the final. Some of the lads were pulling for a matchup with Lamoni in the final, as it would be the ultimate clincher for the long rivalry we've had with them in this competition, but Hypocria are a great up and coming side who knocked out the blades, so it will be a good test for the squad, and hopefully they can come out on top."

It’s The Final Countdown

Twenty teams entered the AOCAF tournament and now only two remain in contention to lift the trophy. Amazingly Hypocria is one of those two sides.

It’s been a remarkable run. Points came from Crystilakere, Pedriana and Turori in the group stage as the Hyppos eventually finished second in Group A. The second round match went to extra time but Fmjphoenix were finally beaten 3 – 1. The quarter game was even closer but champions Starblaydia eventually succumbed in the penalty shootout and a narrow semi final win over Lamoni has put debutants Hypocria within touching distance of lifting the AOCAF trophy at the first attempt.

The semi final was always going to be a tight game. Nobody wanted to make the mistake that might deny their side a place in the final. It was a game of few chances, Shirko had a snapshot well saved by Goggins in the first half and Dospel’s goal bound header was well parried in the second. The Hawks (not Eagles) had the majority of the chances, Ted Kubik in particular was a threat throughout, but they could find no way past an in form defence and an inspired goalkeeper.

The decisive moment came just after the hour mark. The dangerous Ashley Marshall cut inside from the right but was brought down twenty five yards out. The free kick was awarded by the referee. Midfielder Marcus Baxter took aim and curled his kick over the defensive wall and into the top corner, just out of reach of the diving Goggins. The Hyppos held on to the narrow lead to earn a place in their first ever final.

Hypocria 1 – 0 Lamoni
Baxter

Hypocria have reached the final but standing in their way is mighty Vilita, who beat Nedalia 1 – 0 in the other semi. Vilita were beaten finalists in the last tournament and lifting the trophy this time around would be the perfect way to eliminate the memories of that defeat. History is on their side too as the Jungle Cats lifted the AOCAF trophy in the sixth edition of the competition, played right here in Cockbill Street. It’s going to need one last tremendous effort but maybe, just maybe, the Hyppos can deliver one more shock result.

Kecker Announces Final Lineup

-------------------Santo Kecker has announced his starting eleven for the final of AOCAF IX, where he will attempt to lead the Regional Cats to their second championship, and give the Tropics of Vilita their first repeat championship in sporting history on the National Level. The biggest question Kecker had to address is who would partner the incredibly potent Carmine Mbidzo up top. Kecker has answered that question with none other than his own domestic player, putting his faith in young 20 year old Tika Massa whom he coaches back in Lonngeylin for Strike FC. Jhanna City's Tulio Arizmendi gets the nod on defense in favor of Turoki United's Dene Shaw who moves to the bench.

-------------------Another player from Kecker's domestic club will lead the team onto the field, with 25 year old Strike midfielder Thierry Columbo taking the captains armband for the final. Columbo will be captaining a midfield amongst youth, with a teammate and a pair of Starblaydia-based Under 21 internationals along side of him. Tournetas' Contall Rumaoa has been in spectacular form throughout the cup and will play alongside Columbo in the center of midfield. Columbo's Strike FC teammate, budding wing prospect Esorijan Marelja will anchor the left wing while Basian Valley's former Arcticala Inlet trainee Toby Tzikas will take his place down the right.

-------------------Marine Coasts Kris Wrice and Mavaloiao's Bevan Holness will be Kecker's attacking options off the bench, with Terarokka Spirit's Winfield Karega, Internashionale's Rowan Majara and Sporting Mayo's Malovar Stokks joining defender Dene Shaw and backup keeper Alioum Mané, who will stand by if needed to replace the ever present Jawz Oaker of Inland Peaks FC.

Starblaydia Fall In Quarters
Those damn Streetians do it to us again

One wonders why we ever bother going to Streetian-hosted tournaments, as their referee's complete lack of proficiency at officiating at a match involving one team called 'Starblaydia' who wear a fetching combination of white and purple when playing against another team who have some sort of nomenclature and wear a football kit.

Consider Danzir Garahildim's short-lived appearance as a substitute, for instance. In the second half he is brought on for Iskara Daii's Jikiri Fuinbar, letting the fresh legs of the 18 year-old Dwarf come into play. Danzir takes to the field, utters a Dwarven oath of honour and is immediately sent off for repeated foul and abusive language coupled with gentlemanly behaviour. From stepping onto the pitch to the red card being shown, Garahildim's fourth AOCAF cap was earned in precisely seventeen seconds.

That was just the red card-shaped tip of the iceberg. Never mind the three unrealisticly-disallowed Starblaydi goals - perfectly good ones via the TV replay - nor the fact that Marshall's goal was not only debateably offside, but also the blatant foul as he 'skipped' past Martin Watt. With ten men (and now no Dwarf), Starblaydia did well to keep control of the match but when Guylain's Hypocria surged forward there was little Starblaydia could do with a numerical deficit.

When the match went to penalties - something most Starblaydis hate - there was little surprise that Hypocria's luck took them through.

Final Score:
Starblaydia 1 - 1 Hypocria AET

(Macia 29) - (Marshall 81)

CODE
               1  2  3  4  5
Starblaydia    O  O  O  O  X
Hypocria       O  O  O  O  O

Belizaire, Macia, G. Lopez, Lyku-Agbyani, Kovac
Baxter, Shirko, Marshall, Blake, Kindelan

In other news, Liga Starblaydia's teams will be well-represented in the AOCAF Final once again as four of Vilita's named starting line-up will be present, with two more on the bench. Yay for one of the best leagues in the world, if not one of the best national teams.

Lyndon Banks, editor of one of Hypocria’s leading newspapers glared at the man standing in front of him.

“Sit down Mark.”

Mark Wilmot, a young journalist hastily recalled from covering the AOCAF tournament in Cockbill Street, did as he was told.

Banks continued.

“I’ve brought you back because I wanted to talk to you about one of the reports you wrote. The quarter final report to be exact.”

“The boys did us proud that night.”

“Well yes. Your report describes a heroic defensive performance with us hanging on to claim a famous victory.”

Wilmot smiled.

“They really did us proud.”

“Except it didn’t happen quite like that, did it?”

The smile vanished.

“I don’t follow.”

“You clearly weren’t following the match. What about the disallowed Starblaydi goals you failed to mention? The Starblaydi media certainly didn’t forget about them.”

“Pssh, disallowed goals. Never happened.”

“You do know the match was televised don’t you? The entire nation saw it.”

“Well . . . I . . . oh. Now you mention it I do remember a disallowed goal, or two.”

“Three. And the red card. Something else you overlooked perhaps?”

“He was only a little fella. I didn’t think it would make much difference.”

“I see. Clearly we need to find you a new assignment more suited to your . . . talents.”

He rummaged through the papers on his desk.

“Ah, here we go. A woman in Southport believes she’s pregnant with a hyppo fathered on her by the pixie that lives in her wardrobe. That’s clearly more you area. Close the door on your way out.”

Hyppos Fall at the Final Hurdle

Twenty teams had started AOCAF IX and now there just were two. In front of a huge crowd in Cockbill Street’s national stadium and a record television audience back in Hypocria, Paul Blake and Vilita’s Thierry Columbo lead their sides onto the pitch for the final game of the ninth AOCAF tournament.

On their way to the final the Hyppos had claimed a number of high profile victims. Reigning champions Starblaydia and sides the calibre of Turori, Fmjphoenix and Lamoni had all been defeated during the debutant’s shock run of form. But when one last effort was needed for the nation to claim its first piece of silverware the players fell just short. On the night Vilita were just too good.

Just one goal decided the fate of the AOCAF trophy. That goal came in the 66th minute of the match. Vilitan midfielder Rumaoa played a beautifully weighted through ball to Massa who advanced on Kindelan. The striker hit a fierce drive which Kindelan blocked but the ball lopped into the air. Massa’s strike partner Carmine Mbidzo chested the ball down and fired low, beneath the despairing challenge of Kieran Drakes and out of reach of the diving keeper. It capped an excellent personal tournament for the experienced Iskara Daii forward.

Even the most biased of Hypocrian fans couldn’t deny that Vilita had deserved the win. Before the goal Kindelan had been at his brilliant best to deny Mbidzo, Tzikas and a long range thunderbolt from Rumaoa in the first half. Only a narrow offside decision stopped Massa from getting his name on the scoresheet in the second half while Mbidzo remained a constant threat. While Kindelan was doing his best to keep the Jungle Cats out the Hyppos had chances of their own. In the first half a Burdali shot from the edge of the box and a Dospel header were both well saved by the excellent Oaker. In the second half Baxter shaved the post with a freekick and when Shirko pulled a good chance wide the writing was on the wall.

Hypocria 0 – 1 Vilita

Across the city at the Vimesbairn Cricket Ground Nedalia scored an extra time winner to down Lamoni in the third place playoff after the match had finished 1 – 1 after ninety minutes.

It was the end of an excellent first AOCAF tournament for Hypocria, a tournament that proved that we do produce some pretty decent footballers. Unsurprisingly it was goalkeeper Ricardo Kindelan who took most of the plaudits, in an interactive poll to find Hypocria’s player of the tournament Kindelan won 91% of the vote. The keeper was not the only success story. In the centre Marcus Baxter looked as good as ever, Andrei Shirko took his international goal tally to 12 in 28 games and debutant Ashley Marshall was a revelation. Hopefully the team’s good form will continue when the qualifiers for World Cup 24 begin.
